Check out our special double feature spread (pages 10 and 12) for a closer look into how the directors constructed these beautiful - and sometimes bleak - territories. Meanwhile our TV pages are bursting with good chow including new seasons of Sons of Anarchy and Weeds plus the debut season of Vikings. If you’re into some longform drama we’ve had a look at the new Hanks-train Captain Phillips among others. You can also pack several chortles in with the new Jackass release, Matt Lucas’ Small Apartments and spoof mash-up The Hungover Games, and we cover The Fifth Estate, Insidious 2 and a rather awesome grabbag of other thrills on page 26. Have fun discussing your favourite unorthodox filmic weapons (page 10!), until next time... THE TEAM 4-8 NEWS 14-15 ACTION What have the wheelers and dealers of film and TV been up to lately? Although Tauriel does not appear as a named character in Tolkien’s novels, Lilly has stated that she believes the the character is an authentic expansion of the author’s descriptions of the Woodland Elves. Tauriel’s personality and motivations were developed by director Peter Jackson and producer Fran Walsh. SHIA MAKES A SCENE Shia LaBeouf in Nymphomaniac Recently disgraced as a plagiarist (when his short film HowardCantour.com was revealed to be weirdly similar to a comic by American cartoonist Daniel Clowes), Shia LaBeouf is courting controversy yet again, this time during a press conference for Lars von Trier-directed release Nymphomaniac. When asked about his characters’ sex scenes, Labeouf cryptically replied “When the seagulls follow the trawler, it’s because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea. Thank you very much.” The actor then got up and left the room, perfectly mirroring a 1995 press conference for soccer player Eric Cantona. Labeouf has riffed on his own plagiarism numerous times since the Clowes accusations. You can catch the meta-babe this month in The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman, which we review on page 16. HOFFMAN TO GET CGI TREATMENT Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The late and great Philip Seymour Hoffman was seven days out from completing his work on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, at the time of his sudden death on February 2. Although the bulk of his scenes had already been shot, Lionsgate have reported that they plan to digitally recreate the star, who plays Plutarch Heavensbee, in at least one vital scene for the film. Due out in November, the first sequel Catching Fire is available to rent this month. 4 TKE05_04-08_NewsReel_2.indd 4 12/02/2014 1:00 pm A Elizabeth Olsen in Oldboy eth Elizab Olsen dzilla in Go THIRD TIME’S A CHARM The youngest of the three Olsen sisters is making her own way into the land of Hollywood, leaning more on idie cred and humble intelligence than her older kin who are stuck to runway perimeters most of the year round. A whole bevy of notables attached: C harlize Theron, Amanda Seyfried, Neil Patrick Harris, Liam Neeson and Sarah Silverman are all involved. The flick is set in Arizona in 1882, and tells the story of a sheep farmer named Albert (played by MacFarlane) who discovers hidden wells of courage after he loses his beloved girlfriend (Seyfried) when he backs out of a duel. There’s comically exaggerated violence and sexual humour aplenty, as per MacFarlane’s stylistic tradition. Xxxxxxx Scenes from A Million Ways To Die In The Wast BEAUTY & BEAST TO LEAD FOR HERZOG Documentary filmmaker Werner Herzog (The White Diamond, Grizzly Man) is adapting a comedic novel about a schoolyard shooting (huh?), and has collected himself a most unlikely cast: Mike Tyson, Pamela Anderson and Russell Brand will reportedly star in Vernon God Little, Herzog’s take on the novel of the same name which won the Booker Prize in 2003. “OH, HI JAMES” If you don’t know much about ‘the worst movie ever made’ you might want to do a little Google search before James Franco’s next foray into filmmaking. Franco’s company has grabbed itself the rights to The Disaster Artist, a novel by Greg Sestero which details the actor’s experiences making the 2003 romantic drama film The Room with its star, the crackpot Tommy Wiseau. Wiseau’s film - which he wrote, directed and produced as an independent vision - is renown for its bizarre storyline paired with intensely weird and hammy performances (particularly Wiseau’s). Franco’s film will naturally star himself. The sequel will be directed by Elizabeth Banks - which she’ll have to fit in around filming for The Hunger Games sequels, in which she plays Effie Trinket - and will be the first time the actress has worked in such a capacity. Read up on Banks’ contribution to the latest Hunger Games film Catching Fire, which we review on page 16. With some other fab performances from Samuel L. Jackson and Gary Oldman involved, this one is going to be huge fun and may even surpass its 1987 original in charm. The idea was conceived by Vince Zampella and Jason West, the creative minds behind the phenomenally successful Call of Duty franchise. A first-person shooter, Titanfall is a multiplayer game that blends single-player elements. Players face off as assault Pilots, soldiers with the ability to run and leap around the environment with jet pacs. After completing objectives and gaining enough points, similar to a Killstreak in CoD, a 25 foot high heavily armoured mech known as a Titan becomes available for use. The unique, online fast-paced title is set to revolutionise the first-person shooter and could well be the killer title for Xbox One we’ve all been waiting for. IF YOU LIKE THIS, YOU’LL LIKE... A fter the 74th Annual Hunger Games, joint victors Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark are given an all too brief reunion with their families before they’re snatched away again to embark on a ‘Victor’s Tour’ of the Panem districts. During this time it becomes apparent to Katniss that the beginnings of a serious rebellion are seething amongst the destitute rural areas. When she is reaped for the 75th Hunger Games in a tumultuous twist of rule changing, she further grasps the fact that her absolute physical and emotional limits will have to be redefined. “Katniss remains a character I adore but the stakes are different for her this time,” says Jennifer Lawrence, who returns to the role of our plucky heroine. “In the first movie, she was a hesitant hero who really just wanted to save her family, but now she has a bigger weight on her shoulders. She feels a responsibility to all these people who are depending on her and yet, she is struggling with that, because it isn’t at all what she signed up for.” Katniss’ comes to recognise the dual nature of heroism - the burden and the power. She is an inherently noble and loving person, but critics all over have praised Lawrence’s ability to show the evolving maturity and strength of the woman who is navigating her way through very dark socio-political territory. “In Catching Fire, Katniss becomes very aware of all the people who are watching her, who are depending on her and that all becomes very real to her,” explains Lawrence. “She feels that she has to decide between saving her family or fighting for her people.” And the people of Panem do indeed need an idol of courage and tenacity to look up to. Production Designer Chris Wood points out that there has to be an even balance: “One big challenge was to make the film as fantastical as possible, because that’s the nature of this type of film, but also to ground the film and make the environments that we created tangible and realistic.” Creating the realm of Asgard, of which our dishy hero Thor is a denizen, was one of the team’s biggest challenges. “In the first film we were generally within the palace, whereas in this film we actually explore the city as well,” says Wood. “We wanted to be true to the idea both within the Marvel Universe and within Norse mythology that Asgard was a golden city, but... we wanted to suggest that Asgard, as an environment, had been around for many thousands of years.” To do this, a large combination of real locations and enormous, detailed, outdoor sets were used. “We looked at images on the internet, whether architectural or whether it was atmospheric,” says Wood. “We studied all sorts of different historical and modern architectural influences, whether it was Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic, Chinese or Islamic architectural forms. We also studied light and atmosphere. Then we went to the studio and met everyone and Alan Taylor, and got their take on it.” In terms of Thor himself, both Taylor and star Chris Hemsworth see the character’s evolution as chief to the story and the wider Marvel 12 TKE05_12-13_Thor FEATURE.indd 12 12/02/2014 1:06 pm TO P BLONDE HEROES 4. She’s also not too bad at surviving nuclear explosions, having done that twice during the series. 3. Irving’s daughter Kimmie (Georgina Cates) has violated her parole and must go back to jail, which leaves her son Billy (Jackson Nicholl) to torment his grand-elder in a very Dennis the Menace fashion. However Irving is more than up to the task of keeping the little whippersnapper in line, and the two go on a trip across America where they encounter child pageant contestants, male strippers, funeral home grievers and some bikies too. Charlie decides that to get his darling son back into his embrace he must recruit a pile of his famous friends, including Donald Trump, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Tom Cruise, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake and Kanye West. Some of these actors resemble their characters so closely it’s bizarre, particularly Nicole Lari-Joni who could make a serious living being an Angelina Jolie impersonator. Then again, Chandler Kylko (who plays Tom Cruise) is more of a Channing Tatum lookalike. The ingenious method with which Katniss ensured they would both leave the last Hunger Games arena alive was seditious in the extreme, and Katniss is warned by President Snow himself that she had better assure everyone that it happened out of genuine love for Peeta, not from disrespect for the Capitol. But already the Districts have found hope in Katniss’ actions, and hold her up as an idol in their struggle for freedom from the awful totalitarian and poverty-stricken environments they live in. Jennifer Lawrence drops another marvellous performance as the determined Katniss, whose traumas in the last arena will hopefully imbue her with the kind of fortified emotional and physical strength she’ll need to get out of the 75th annual Hunger Games in one piece. He becomes an outcast after resisting Earth’s government and the general apathy which he sees around him, preferring to fight totalitarian regimes (earthbound and alien). When a mysteriously masked man murders Machete’s friend Sartana (Alba) during a cartel-related shootout, the ex-federale is devastated. But he soon has to pull his socks up as the US President himself requests a consult, beseeching Machete to track and kill a Mexican arms dealer who is threatening to bomb Washington D.C., in return for the gift of US citizenship. Trejo shines as per usual, despite this sequel not having as much punch as the first. 16 TKE05_16-17_Reviews_ACTION.indd 16 12/02/2014 1:09 pm THOR: THE DARK WORLD RATED: M AVAILABLE: Mar 5 STARS: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins DIRECTOR: Alan Taylor After their insanely chaotic and vicious fight in the previous film - which resulted in triumph for one and humiliating incarceration for the other - why would Thor ask for his brother Loki’s help? The stakes are much higher this time, of course - creepily higher. Director Alan Taylor has delivered a spectacular look at the nine realms which make up the Norse cosmology, particularly the heavenly Asgard, in which Thor (Hemsworth), Odin (Hopkins) and occasionally Loki (Hiddleston) reside. The threat to Asgard and Midgard (that’s Earth, where you can find our heroine Jane Frost, played by the always stoic yet feminine Natalie Portman) comes from Svartalfheim. This tongue-twister is the lowest of the middle realms, and the dwelling of the Dark Elves who are led by the rather ominouslynamed Malekith the Accursed. Hemsworth succeeds in giving Thor new depth and maturity after the events of the first film, and Hiddleston is awesome as the mortified serpent still smarting with an icy anger at his defeat. But the agent that’s turned these zombies is a particularly virulent type of street drug. And that means we’ve got junkie zombies, manic and irritated beyond flesh-eating reason. Danny Trejo pops up as a priest with an axe, who helps our hero Hunter (Copping), a triggerhappy young guy with a grudge and a booze problem. THE NECESSARY DEATH OF CHARLIE COUNTRYMAN RATED: MA15+ AVAIL: Mar 19 STARS: Shia LaBeouf, Evan Rachel Wood, Mads Mikkelsen, Til Schweiger DIRECTOR: Fredrik Bond DURATION: 121 mins FORMATS: DVD, Blu-ray Shia LaBeouf reportedly actually tripped on acid during the filming of Charlie Countryman in Romania; he plays a slightly naive but charming young man who falls for Gabi (Wood), a musician whose husband (the amazing Mikkelsen) is a sordid gangster. THE FALL OF THE ESSEX BOYS RATED: R AVAIL: Mar 12 STARS: Robert Cavanah, Kierston Wareing, Peter Barrett, Jay Brown DIRECTOR: Paul Tranter DURATION: 87 mins FORMATS: DVD Based on the true incidents of the Essex Boys gang, grimy director Paul Tanter gives us the story of three drug dealers who were shot to pieces while sitting in their Land Rover in a Rettendon street. The ensuing major police operation was (and still is) a subject of fascination for novelists and filmmakers. It tells the story of merchant mariner Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), whose US-flagged, unarmed cargo ship was hijacked by pirates near a Somalian port city in 2009. The four terrorists were led by Abduwali Muse (Barkhad Abdi), a notorious criminal who was born in north-central Somalia. Muse’s attack is thought to be the first successful hijacking of a US ship since the early 19th century, and the film focuses on the relationship between the audacious Muse and the Captain of the captured ship. The eventual standoff between the pirates and the crew of Phillips’ vessel is spectacularly captured by Greengrass, with an adherence to fact and grimy reality which might get the director an Oscar. Abdi is being hailed as a ‘breakout star’ and has received Best Supporting Actor nominations at the Academy Awards and BAFTAs. FORMATS: DVD, Blu-ray Poseidon Juggernaut U-571 THE BUTLER VIRGINIA RATED: M AVAILABLE: Mar 19 STARS: Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, Carrie Preston, Barry Shabaka Henley DIRECTOR: Dustin Lance Black DURATION: 112 mins FORMATS: DVD, Blu-ray The ever-youthful Jennifer Connelly stars in this quite funny, sensitive drama about a mentally fragile mother and her struggle towards the American Dream. Virginia (Connelly) lives in a small Southern town and has been maintaining a relationship with the married sheriff (Ed Harris). Her son Emmett (Harrison Gilbertson) decides to begin a journey of selfdiscovery to uncover the truth about his birth father, and during his research begins dating the sheriff’s daughter, Jessie (Emma Roberts). It’s a meandering, whimsical reverie shot in West Michigan, and while the storyline becomes bleary with unanswered questions in places, the whole thing finds a strong central pillar in Connelly’s wonderful performance. ADORATION RATED: M AVAIL: Mar 5 STARS: Forest Whitaker, David Banner, Michael Rainey Jr., LaJessie Smith, Oprah Winfrey DIRECTOR: Lee Daniels DURATION: 132 mins FORMATS: DVD, Blu-ray RATED: MA15+ AVAIL: Mar 26 STARS: Naomi Watts, Robin Wright, Xavier Samuel, James Frecheville DIRECTOR: Anne Fontaine DURATION: 111 mins FORMATS: DVD, Blu-ray Over the course of three decades, butler Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker), originally raised on a cotton plantation, has served the needs of eight American presidents. The Butler takes us through the man’s experiences in the most important building in the US, including the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, and several other events which both affect him personally and make impacts on wider American society. In a compelling story about filial and romantic love, Naomi Watts and Robin Wright star as best friends and single mothers who have spent many hardships and good times together. When they each fall for the others’ sons (who have only barely reached manhood themselves), the powers of friendship and lust clash heads as the four navigate the remainder of their summer holiday together. 18 TKE05_18-19_Reviews_DRAMA.indd 18 12/02/2014 1:10 pm A AIN’T THEM BODIES SAINTS RATED: M AVAILABLE: Mar 19 STARS: Rooney Mara, Casey Affleck, Ben Foster, Keith Carradine DIRECTOR: David Lowery DURATION: 96 mins Three characters who represent various facets of the law make up the chief triangle of Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, directed and written by David Lowery who so far has many more shorts than features under his belt. Bob Muldoon (the fascinating Casey Affleck) is an infamous bandit who was in the middle of a crime spree with his adored wife Ruth Guthrie (Rooney Mara), when the law caught up with them. Taking responsibility for the bullet which critically injured a police officer but was actually fired by Ruth, Muldoon receives a harsh prison sentence and is swept away from his lover and the unborn child she carries. Soon he is unable to stand the separation and the young desperado breaks out of prison to embark on a futigitive’s journey across the Texas hills, determined to be with his family regardless of the cost. Receiving the Dramatic Cinematography Award at last year’s Sundance, Lowery captures the dust-laden ‘70s South with absolutely romantic abandon. Jordan, Melonie Diaz, Octavia Spencer, Kevin Durand DIRECTOR: Ryan Coogler DURATION: 85 mins FORMATS: DVD, Blu-ray Coogler’s first feature length film made a giant impression upon its Sundance premiere, and resulted in a bidding war. The sensitivelyshot film (which includes some amateur footage of the actual events) traverses the last day of 22 year old Oscar Dawson’s life, which concluded with his being fatally shot by Bay Area Rapid Transit Police in the early hours of New Years’ Day, 2009. A boy who is thought to bring bad luck to all who engage with him decides to prove his worth by entering a rocket building competition, after leading his family through the decimated lands of Laos. TIM WINTON’S THE TURNING RATED: MA15+ AVAILABLE: Feb 24 STARS: Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne, Miranda Otto, Hugo Weaving DIRECTOR: Various DURATION: 180 mins FORMATS: DVD, Blu-ray Australian author Tim Winton is as prolific as he is beloved, and has delivered an enormous array of literature to avid readers for more than 30 years. His short stories in particular manage to distil little motes of symbolism with incredibly human experiences and heartbreaks, and The Turning gathers some of these together in a loose collection of short tales. There is a fantastic bag of directors involved here such as Rhys Graham, Shaun Gladwell and the awesome Sydney-based theatre director Simon Stone; plus several actors are given a go behind the camera too, including Mia Wasikowska and David Wenham. Join all that to performances from some of our country’s best and you’ve got a wonderfully diverse, evocative film to enjoy. 19 TKE05_18-19_Reviews_DRAMA.indd 19 12/02/2014 1:10 pm CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2 RATED: G AVAILABLE: Mar 20 STARS: Bill Hader, Anna Faris, Will Forte DIRECTORS: Cody Cameron, Kris Pearn DURATION: 95 mins The Cloudy crew are back with another biting satirical comedy about over consumption, and this time the creativity from the illustrators who came up with the film’s various food-inspired creatures is absolutely stunning. After the events of the first film, in which our hero Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader) and his pals saved the world from the food storm, everything is seemingly back to normal. However, it quickly becomes apparent that Flint’s food machine has not been destroyed at all but is now creating food beasts which are highly intelligent and also learning to swim away from their island home. Flint, Sam (Anna Farris), Flint’s father Tim (James Caan) and company must return to the now hostile, food-swamped Swallow Falls to find the food machine and get rid of it once and for all, or else vicious giant cheeseburgers and all manner of other wild foodstuffs will soon devour the planet. The Beltway sniper attacks which occurred across America in 2002 provide the fodder for this fantastic independent. Bryan Cranston hasn’t rested on his laurels after the success of Breaking Bad. In Cold Comes the Night he’s a blind Polish criminal, who grabs a mother and her daughter at the hotel they own. He needs them to be his eyes, for the purpose of retrieving a cash package from a shady police officer. It’s tense and neatly twisted. The return of the Lambert family, and their strange and unwanted connection to the spirit world, is great news for fans of the writing-directing team of Leigh Whannel and James Wan.
