YOUR MONTHLY FIX OF
ENTERTAINMENT NEWS
FASSASSIN’S GREED
While we have known that
Michael Fassbender was
attached to the extremely
exciting Assassin’s Creed film
for a good while, it’s been
revealed that the megababe
will be playing two separate
roles within the movie! One
not enough for you, Fassy?
It’s not out until August 2015,
which gives you lots of time
to get your head around the
narrative of the game on
which the film will be based.
It’s set during two time
periods: the present day
and the Spanish Inquisition,
which began in 1478.
Fassbender will apparently
appear in the present day
as a death row inmate,
and during the sequences
set in Inquisition times will
play the inmate’s ancestor.
SINISTER 2 SHUFFLES CLOSER
Sinister 2 is a little closer to filming! Stepping into the shoes of Ethan Hawke, who
played the unfortunate father of a family recently moved into a pretty phantom-choked
house in 2012’s Sinister, will be Shannyn Sossamon. You might recognise the Hawaiian
beauty from The Rules of Attraction, 40 Days and 40 Nights, or A Knight’s Tale. She’ll play
the mother of twins who moves into Hawke’s old house, and will inevitably be haunted
by the freaky Bughuul. Hopefully she finds a way to subvert his awful intentions.

LEATHERFACE
LOOMS ANEW
In August we said goodbye
to a number of professionals
in the film world, including
Marilyn Burns – the Texan
actress who stunned us
with her lung capacity in
simultaneously sprinting
and screaming, as she
tried to evade Leatherface
in the original The Texas
Chain Saw Massacre
(1974). The film has had
several reimaginings,
sequels, reboots of sequels,
prequels and the rest.
Now Millennium Films has
announced it will produce
another prequel, this time
looking into Leatherface’s
youth in Texas in the 1970s,
and explore just how he
came to be such a chainsaw
lovin’ lad. It seems we can’t
get enough of the guy, but
we doubt we’ll ever see the
likes of Burns’ incredible
performance again. RIP.

AUSTRALIA
Say what you like about Kristen Stewart,
but the lady has grit. The trailer for her new
film Camp X-Ray has just been released,
and while it seems to start off as a G.I.
Jane tale, it’s far less about the wonder of
a woman in uniform and more about the
intensive emotional and physical strain
which soldiers at Guantanamo Bay bear
witness to, participate in, and fall prey to
themselves. This is one which may cause
a bit of a stir but will undoubtedly be a
must-see. If you’re in the mood for some
emotive war tales, check out our review of
The Monuments Men, out this month.
MARY MARY
BRINGS THE SCARY
The Frankenstein monster motif has been
raked over through the years, and now
filmmakers are turning to the woman behind
the story for their filmic fodder. It's been
confirmed that Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner
(who plays Sansa Stark) has been cast as
Mary Shelley, the English novelist who wrote
Frankenstein in 1818 when she was just 21
years old. The film will follow Shelley through
the years of writing the legendary gothic horror
novel and the toll it took on her. We think Turner
has more than enough charisma to be a leading
lady – can't wait to see how this one turns out.

Itte oakah!
There’s quite a bit of set footage floating around
out there from upcoming superhero standoff epic
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, but it’s only
wobbly hand-held bits of Ben Affleck as regular
old Bruce Wayne running down the street. Now
we have word that perhaps we actually should be
looking out for Aquaman! While rumours have been
sprinkled around that Jason Momoa may be cast
as the underwater hero (rumours that we ourselves
helped spread last month), a man claiming to be
Zack Snyder has rung into a Detroit radio station
and told the hosts off for laughing at Aquaman’s
abilities. “The cool thing with Aquaman is his triton,
so you have to realise that could cut the flesh of
Superman if they came in contact,” maybe-Snyder
said. “Not to say he’s in my movie or anything like
that, but he has the potential to be bad ass.
That’s all I’m saying.” I think we’d all really
like to see Momoa swipe his triton around
at Henry Cavill, so let’s hope this one’s for realsies.

A VERY LIZZY
CHRISTMAS
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has just caned everything
in living sight at the box office, and its producer,
Michael Bay, has taken the opportunity to put down
his glass of champagne and announce that he’ll be
returning for the next one as well. We don’t yet know
if Jonathan Liebesman will be directing again, but the
script is definitely to be penned by TMNT writers Josh
Appelbaum and Andre Nemec. Who knows, maybe
Michael will want to reveal the secret of the ooze
himself and get behind the camera for the sequel.
Lizzy Caplan, who is currently enjoying a buttload
of praise for her work on Showtime series
Masters of Sex, will join a still-pretty-mysterious
Christmas film starring Seth Rogen and Joseph
Gordon-Levitt. We know it’s about Christmas,
and that Rogen and Gordon-Levitt are playing
best mates (a union they had time to hone in 2011’s
50/50), and that Caplan will be Gordon-Levitt’s
love interest. That might be all the plot some other
Christmas yawners need but knowing these actors,
there’s got to be another hook. We wait, we watch.

STACK EM’ UP
It’d be silly for Warner Bros. not to capitalise on the roaring
prosperity of The Lego Movie, but they’ve wasted no
time in marking out the Memorial Day Weekend slots for
2015 and 2016 as release dates for two as yet unnamed,
animated films – which many are speculating will be Lego
sequels. In America, Memorial Day is celebrated on the last
Monday of May and commemorates all men and women
who’ve died in the service of the United States military. It’s
often seen as the start of summer, and the long weekend is
a popular choice for the release of big season films. It’d be
the perfect spot to launch more Lego into our lives, fingers
crossed. Meanwhile another childhood toy adaptation is out
this month: flip to page XX for our Team Hot Wheels review.

REVIVED
The 1994 hit Interview with the Vampire,
starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, was
released to huge acclaim by Warner
Bros. Studios – as was its semi-flop
follow-up, 2002’s Queen of the Damned.
Now rival studio Universal Pictures has
teamed up with Imagine Entertainment
and acquired the full rights to author
Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles,
of which Interview was an adaptation.
Whether the resulting project will be
a film or a series we don’t know, but
Lestat’s various bloody adventures
would lend themselves very nicely to

FIFA 15
There’s no disputing that EA
Sports has dominated the
football sim realm for over five
years now with its compelling
annual FIFA iteration. While
football gaming purists still
hold a candle for Pro Evo,
the simple fact remains that
FIFA, at this point, is a far
better game. This is the second
year that FIFA has featured
on the new generation of
consoles, and while the
studio is still supporting the
older hardware, the focus is
obviously now on PS4 and
Xbox One. New to FIFA 15
is improved goalkeeper AI
(a feature that has been in
development for three
years), new player emotion
that will affect how your team
respond if you keep missing
easy goals, and a tweak to the
tactical AI so that if
you’re one nil down and
|trying hard to equalise,
the CPU will automatically
pull all the defending players
back behind the ball.
It’s good to FIFA!

BRICK
TRICKS
T
here are three special things
about Luc Besson’s new
film Brick Mansions. Firstly,
French star David Belle
is reprising his role from Besson’s
2004 film District 13, of which Brick
Mansions is an English-language
remake. It’s not unheard of for actors
who shine in world cinema flicks to
be asked to replay their characters in
the Hollywood versions of films, but
it isn’t exactly common either. Some
notable instances include Penelope
Cruz playing Sofia in both Open
Your Eyes (1997) and Vanilla Sky
(2001); Gérard Depardieu playing the
titular patriarch André Arnel in both
versions of My Father the Hero (1991
and 1994); and the young Japanese
actress Takako Fuji playing vengeful

ghost Kayako in Ju-on: The Grudge
(2002) and The Grudge (2004),
as well as a couple of the sequels
in the J-horror franchise.
Belle agreed to work with Besson
again in the slightly altered story of
Brick Mansions, which was shifted
from Paris to Detroit for the remake.
It’s a dystopian version of the future
of the gritty city, in which law
enforcement often quails at the feet
of extremely powerful gangs who
rort one another in huge, corruptive
and very violent deals. In an attempt
to contain the brutality, officials have
built an enormous wall around the
worst section of the city, but one
undercover cop (the late Paul Walker)
must team up with Lino in order to
penetrate the giant barrier and find
those responsible for a kidnapping.
The stage is set, the stakes are high.
Enter the second special thing
about David Belle: he is the founder
of parkour, a physical discipline which
is somewhat difficult to explain
but is immediately recognisable as
soon as you see enthusiast clips or
films which display the art – as does
Brick Mansions. Belle developed
parkour from his own gymnastic
and military training background,
and it’s something of a way to move
through an urban environment. Using
astonishing precision and strength,
parkour aficionados swing, jump,
climb, vault, run and use all manner
of other innovative techniques to get
themselves through and around the
obstacles of an environment, and it’s

WELCOME TO
THE HOTEL
OF ZABROWKA
Wes has done it again with his latest, candidly odd comedy The Grand
Budapest Hotel – and this time his lead character has surpassed
everyone’s expectations of delight.
W
hen it’s used to accompany
the word ‘director’, ‘auteur’
commonly means that this
particular filmmaker’s vision
is so pervasive and unique that they are
to be considered the ‘author’ of a film,
more so than the person who penned
the screenplay. While Wes Anderson has
both written and directed eight of his ten
feature films, he is considered an auteur
because of the very particular style every
one of his incredible productions enlists:
hand-made detail, eccentric elements
that are both decorative and part of the
greater structure, very centred camera
angles, solid text on screen, ensemble
casts, several clear muses, and very
erudite characters who are as whimsical
as they are emotional and flawed.
With The Grand Budapest Hotel
Anderson has brought us into a fictional
world of caprice which is ambitious
even by his standards: the Republic of
Zubrowka, an alpine, European state.
Zubrowka serves as a locale which
is steeped in the historical goings-on
of Europe during the 1930s and ‘40s,
but also breathes enough of its own
fabricated life that Anderson can insert
whatever he pleases into its parameters.
“Every time Wes makes a film, it’s
a whole world, and there’s a whole
universe to be created along with it,”
says producer Jeremy Dawson. “Here,
he has created an entirely fictional part
of Eastern Europe… and in Zubrowka we
find one of those great spa towns that
cropped up all over before the turn of the
century. The story really came from his
interest in that time period, that history,
that world; and also a certain type of
character who is our Monsieur Gustave,
the concierge at this grand hotel. So his
idea of both the character and this entire
world merged together, and Wes turned
out this great script. Then the script,
the acting and direction all combined
to become something different even
than it was on the page.”
And who is this Monsieur Gustave,
the lead character in Wes’ world? As a
long-time employee of the eponymous
hotel, Gustave is meticulous, proud
but dedicated. He is the concierge, a
prestigious position to hold in such a
magnificent establishment. Gustave is
known for the extra attention he heaps
upon the wealthy, aged ladies who
frequent the hotel, and when one of them
dies and leaves him a valuable painting
in her will, Gustave is immediately
suspected of her murder. It’s these
happenings which kick
off the bulk of the
film, as Gustave
embarks on a

An all-star cast does not always maketh
the successful movie, although it’s an
excellent start: The Monuments Men
boasts George Clooney, Matt Damon,
John Goodman, Cate Blanchett and Bob
Balaban amongst its troupe, which is very
attractive. Thankfully, they’re all given their
space to shine while meshing together as
a fantastic ensemble. The story is loosely
based on a non-fiction work about a special
taskforce put together in the early 1940s,
which was assigned the mission of locating
stolen works of art and other artefacts
and ensuring their safety, away from the
destructive hands of Adolf Hitler and his
cronies. The group is made up of seven
gallery curators, art historians, and museum
directors, who are, not surprisingly, a little
nonplussed when it comes to the realities

There’s a love triangle at the
centre of this British thriller,
which centres on ruthless

revenge when he discovers
his girlfriend is cheating

dark humour you get in

it’s a lot of brutal fun.
Most time travel sci-fi

frenzied urgency, that

more on the ethics of

Thoughtful and beautiful.

of his revered, if not inimitable, style in
the highly anticipated The Grand Budapest

In this fascinating, sensual,
coming-of-age film, Isabelle
(Marine Vacth) makes it her
mission to lose her virginity to a
boy of her choice, but finds the
experience disappointing. She
decides to embark on a journey to
explore sexual possibilities and
begins working as a prostitute,
but after an older client dies
during their meeting, she
desperately tries to shift herself
back to her former, normal life.
According to historians there are very few records
about the life of Dido Elizabeth Belle, whose
story director Amma Asante became enamoured
with and has brought to the big screen with
resplendent, sensitive dignity. The daughter of a
British naval officer and a West Indian slave, Belle
was four years old when taken by her father from
the West Indies back to England, and raised as
a noblewoman in the household of the officer’s
uncle: William Murray, the first Earl of Mansfield.
Asante paints in the details of Belle’s upbringing
alongside Elizabeth Murray (the Earl’s neice),
focusing on the differences in the girls’ stations
which are undeniably present even as they are
both educated and raised as free gentlewomen.
When Belle meets the young lawyer John Davinier,
she’s reprimanded by Mansfield (as he considers
the man unworthy of his charge); these troubles
are set against the backdrop of Mansfield’s
involvement in a landmark legal case which
could contribute to abolishing slavery in Britain
forever. Expressive and majestic.

Coming to us from Denmark,

Pelle, a meek and bullied

by an ant. The next morning
he finds himself imbued

on the original story, setting out Irving’s
tale and then reviving Ichabod from his
grave in modern times, in very mysterious
circumstances. As he is resurrected, so
too is the Headless Horseman, as the
two beings’ fates are intertwined due
to their blood mixing on the battlefield

DIARIES S5
Robert Rodriguez was the
visionary behind the 1996 film
From Dusk Till Dawn, which
starred Quentin Tarantino and
Salma Hayek. So does the
premise - about the violent
Gecko brothers Seth and
Richie, who take a God-fearing
family hostage on their way
out of a bank robbery and find
themselves fighting for their
lives in a strip club populated
by undead - work in TV series
format? It does, giving us
more guns-and-punches action
and backstory in the days
leading up to the cohort’s
arrival at the Titty Twister
bar, and more supernatural
discovery when the group
descends into the temple on
top of which the Titty Twister
is built. Rodriguez returns
to direct, so we can be sure
we’re getting original ideas
which he perhaps didn’t have
room to include the first time.
Great stuff.

Season five of this
supernatural thriller series
starts off happily and
hopefully, with Elena
(Nina Dobrev) beginning
college and feeling excited
about leading a regular
life. But when the girl’s
poor roomate turns up
eviscerated by another
vampire, things take a turn
for the intense.
The title of this spin-off
from The Vampire Diaries
refers to the very first
vampires: the three
Mikaelson siblings, who
want to reclaimNew
Orleans. Searching for
clues to their family history
within the town, they
discover there are others
doing the same, who could
be either friend or foe.

PERFECT SISTERS
The directorial debut from
Canadians Derek Lee and Clif
Prowse (who also star), Afflicted
makes the most of its found
footage approach with a realistic
storyline, instead of just sending
a wobbly camera about its events
as other filmmakers are wont to
do. Lee and Prowse use their own
names in the film, playing two
besties who decide to record their
overseas shenanigans for a travel
web series. Near the start of their
trip, Derek manages to pick up a
girl (high five!) who unfortunately
attacks him in the night. As each
day dawns, Derek appears to
be succumbing to an insidious
disease, which Clif insists on
documenting. Downhill from there.
DIRECTOR: Derek Lee,
Clif Prowse
This is a very original take on
the post-apocalyptic storyline,
focusing on a philosophy class
at a school in Jakarta. Teacher
Mr Zimit (D’Arcy) poses a
hypothetical problem to his
students involving nuclear
war and a bunker, and lets
them decide who will live and
who will die. Their answers are
played out in separate physical
threads, but their teacher is
hiding pertinent details.

AFTER THE DARK
RATED: M
This one promises to be as
intriguing as that other brilliant
retelling of a real-life murder
case involving young girls as the
perpetrators, Heavenly Creatures
(1994). Perfect Sisters illuminates
the tale of Linda Anderson, whose
death was ruled as accidental
when authorities found the
alcoholic and pill-addicted mother
drowned in her own bathwater,
after a 911 call from the woman’s
two hysterical teenaged
daughters (played by Abigail
Breslin and Georgie Henley). In
the months after the incident
however, suspicions are raised
when the police hear reports that
the girls have been boasting to
friends about their perfect crime.

If you can get over the fact
that Jonathan LaPaglia
looks freakily identical to his
famous brother Anthony,
The Reckoning is a satisfying
ride through a crime thriller
storyline. When a detective’s
partner is brutally murdered,
said officer must locate a
couple of runaway teens who
have unknowingly recorded
the identity of the killer.

In this critically-praised drama set
in southern America and adapted
from a highly popular novel, Nic
Cage plays the titular hard-hearted
ex-felon. He lives an isolated life
looking out only for himself, and
initially meets 15-year-old Gary
with scorn and rejection. But a
tendril of paternal instinct uncurls
from Joe’s bitter heart, and
suddenly he finds himself caring
a lot more about the troubled boy
than he meant to.
Competing for the title of most
intense frown, Samuel L. Jackson
and Dominic Cooper star in this
crime thriller. Cooper is Mitch
Brockden, a District Attorney rising
up the ranks, who commits a fatal
hit-and-run and then finds himself
on the case. His conscience
compels him to manipulate
evidence details so that the
wrongly accused man is freed, but
he soon realises that perhaps no
one is as innocent as they appear.

EXTRAS
A SELECTION OF TITLES THE DVD STORK WILL BE DELIVERING NEXT MONTH
THE BABADOOK
This Australian horror film doesn’t boast any huge
names, but it received massive critical acclaim at the
2014 Sundance Film Festival and has collected a huge
swell of fans who are into their genuinely creepy
horror. The Babadook is about a widowed mother
whose young son is becoming increasingly difficult
to discipline and who swears there’s a monster that
is coming to kill them both. A picture book titled
Mister Babadook turns up in the house, and the boy is
convinced that this is the entity he’s been seeing in his
dreams. It’s out on Oct 31 (Halloween!).
THE OTHER WOMAN
A trio of ladies discover they’re all being conned by
the same cheating womaniser, and band together in
this sweet comedy starring Leslie Mann, Cameron
Diaz and Kate Upton. It’ll be in store Oct 8.
EDGE OF
TOMORROW
Tom Cruise is still definitely
capable of carrying an action
film, as this mind-bending
timewarp of a thriller proves.
He’s a soldier forced to endure
a horrific battle in loop over
and over again. It’s out Oct 8.
UNDER
THE SKIN
Scarlett Johansson is a
sensual alien who preys on
a series of unfortunate men
in this fascinating thriller.
Critics all over are lauding
Johansson’s return to the
indie fold so best get your
hands on it Oct 15.
GLEE S5
In season five we get
tributes to The Beatles,
Katy Perry, Lady Gaga,
and Billy Joel amongst

Grab it Oct 9.
THE FAULT IN OUR STARS
Sixteen year old Hazel (Shailene Woodley) has been
diagnosed with terminal cancer, and only wants to

to attend a support group, and Hazel finds her naturally
cheeky personality beginning to return, to the point where
she falls in love with one of the other group members,
Augustus (Ansel Elgort). But their time is fleeting, and the
star-crossed pair are forced to decide whether it’s better to
part ways or to indulge their feelings. It’s out Oct 29.

GODZILLA
Finally, finally, finally. We’ve all been hanging to grab
a(nother) glimpse of director Gareth Edwards’ monster
mash, and it’ll be here Oct 1. Starring Elizabeth Olsen
(who we’ve profiled in Actor Focus this month) and
everyone’s favourite cook Bryan Cranston, Godzilla
brings the mother of all creatures to San Francisco
where the military is desperately trying to cover up
the repercussions of a series of botched deep sea
experiments conducted in the 1950s. Something has
emerged from its chrysalis and is intent on wreaking
havoc, and innocent American denizens are in its way.
MALEFICENT
One of Disney’s
classic villains gets
the story told her way
in Maleficent, adapted
from the story of
Sleeping Beauty.
Get around Angelina
Jolie’s cheekbones
on Oct 8.
JAMESY BOY
This crime drama is based on the true story of ex-convict
James Burns, played by Spencer Lofranco (the first big role
for the young actor). Small-time gang member James finds
himself in a maximum security prison, and must retain his
hope and belief in the wider world. It’s out Oct 22.
SHARKNADO 2:
THE SECOND ONE
Hey you Sharknado
fans, time to roll up
your sleeves for the
sequel. It features
more sharks swinging
through the air and
the return of Tara Reid
trying to get away
from them. You can
grab it Oct 23.
X-MEN: DAYS OF
FUTURE PAST
The X-Men are flung around in time in this ambitious
offering to the franchise (as the confusing title would
suggest), with older and younger versions of each
character teaming up. It’s awesome, and out on Oct 22.
AMERICAN
HORROR

This super popular
series has scared the
bejeezus out of us all,
and don’t we just love it?
Season three’s theme is
oppression, particularly
that of marginalised

witches. It’ll be out to
get you on Oct 29.
