2016 Southern Iowa Fair Dedications
Every year the Southern Iowa Fair likes to take the time to dedicate the fair to a certain person that attended the
fair, enjoyed the fair, took part in the fair, and was well known for being a big fair supporter. This past year has been
an unfortunate year as there are three individuals who have sadly passed away, that were all a part of the fair in some
way or another. The Southern Iowa Fair Board would like to dedicate the 2016 fair to:
Martha McGlothlen, Jerry Hendricks, & Steve Van Maanen.
Martha was united in marriage to Rodger McGlothlen in 1955. Martha’s love of the fair started
in the 1960’s when her husband Rodger was a 4-H leader for the West Des Moines Livewires.
Martha then went on to lend her helping hand to her children, Warren, Jeri & Rodney, with
showing and preparing their cattle and Jeri’s horses for the fair. This tradition continued with
her grandchildren. Martha loved watching her grandson, R.J., show his cattle and her
granddaughter, Sydney, show horses and dogs at the fair. Martha was a very social lady who
possessed a kind hearted concern for her family and friends. She enjoyed working with her
children & grandchildren in 4-H, sewing, neighborhood club, playing cards, cooking, and baking.
She enjoyed being involved with the fair in many ways. Martha loved baking pies to enter in the
open class at the fair and later became the Culinary Superintendent. She also sponsored
trophies and prizes for numerous events during the fair. Martha also looked forward to taking
tickets at the races every Wednesday night and lending a helping hand when needed. Her
support, involvement, and spirit will be greatly missed by all.
Jerry has been around the fair scene for many years. He ran Hendricks
Sound out of Fairfield. He provided sound for the Southern Iowa Fair as well
as many other fairs in South Eastern Iowa for several years.
Jerry had a passion for sound and sound equipment. He always loved going
fair to fair and visiting with the board members.
His friendly face and conversations will be greatly missed.
Steve has been a part of the Southern Iowa Fair since he was very young. Before he
was old enough to show livestock himself, he helped his older brothers and sister
with their projects. When he was ten he started showing hogs in 4-H. Winning was
not as important to him as what he could learn from the project. Camping at the fair
was always a highlight of his summer. That is a tradition he carried on with his own
children.
As an adult, having his children participate in 4-H was encouraged, and Steve
embraced the opportunity to teach them the same values he had learned through 4H. Not only did he support his own children with their projects, but also their
friends. Steve found value in helping behind the scenes, and was always good for an
encouraging word and a friendly smile which will be missed by many at the fair.

2015 Southern Iowa Fair
Queen
Maddison Stewart
Having the honor to serve as the 2015 Southern Iowa Fair Queen has been an unforgettable
experience. The past year has been nothing short of amazing. It has been a year filled with emotions,
learning, friendship, and growth. I am honored to have gained skills throughout my reign that will stay
with me forever. I loved being able to represent Mahaska County, not only here in Mahaska County but
also at the Iowa State Fair. I enjoyed being a role model for kids of Mahaska County and all the kids I
interacted with at the Iowa State Fair. Thank you to all my friends and family for their support throughout
this past year.

2016 Featured Tractor
1965 Oliver Model #1650
Owned by Virgil & Bert Terpstra
The event has grown to be the best County Fair show of antique equipment in the State of Iowa. The Southern
Iowa Fair Board has been very supportive of the effort of many volunteers. The committee in charge is proud of
the show and greatly appreciates all of the help and support.
Every year we strive to obtain more tractors and gas engines. We will also have several Cub Cadet Lawn
mowers on display. The owner of each piece of displayed equipment receives a free button and magnetic
plaque for coming. We have not charged to display equipment, as we feel it is our privilege to have someone
bring equipment to the show.
The volunteers help make the show possible by serving ice cream Tuesday - Friday. In addition, Thursday
evening they will serve stew and cornbread. Our guests greatly enjoy 35 gallons of the best beef stew made
over an open fire in a big black pot.
The large hospitality tent seems to be a great gathering place during the fair, with people drinking coffee and
swapping tall stories. It is a nice place to just sit and relax.
The committee has built an unloading dock at the fairgrounds to make it easier to unload and load equipment.
They have also purchased tables and equipment to serve and eat at, a trailer to store equipment in, plus many
other items to improve the display.
You won’t want to miss the antique display of tractors, gas engines, and miniature displays of yesteryear. All
tractors are welcome.
The show is supported by free will donations for the ice cream, food, and drink. Your generous donations are
appreciated to help provide a bigger and better display each year.
