Athens, Ohio — In providing the
deer
kill statistics for the state’s first-ever
postChristmas two-day firearms deer-hunting
season, the Ohio Division of Wildlife
had
to make an apples-to-oranges comparison
rather than a more direct apples-to-app
les
examination.
Consequent ly, the wildlife division
utilized the deer kill from the 2012
twoday weekend firearms deer-huntin
g
season. This season was sandwiched
between the general firearms deer-hunting season and Christmas when
14,365
whitetails were shot. That figure
represented approximately six percent
of the
2012 all-seasons’ deer kill.
This year’s Dec. 28 and 29 post-Christmas hunt yielded a deer kill
of 9,447
animals; the translation of which
probably will mean this two-day hunt

Warm temps leading to night
catches of walleyes on Erie
By John Hageman
Contributing Writer
Toledo, Ohio — With much
warmer than average fall temperatures, including three new all-time
daily record highs and December
air temperatures averaging about
41.5 F, the second highest since
records have been kept in Toledo,
Lake Erie is in no hurry to freeze.
Consequently, shoreline night
casters from Cleveland to the
islands and Michigan shoreline
have been doing pretty well catching walleyes at night. Casting
solid-bodied or jointed Storm
Thundersticks, Bomber Long-A’s,
or Rapala Husky Jerks has worked
best in a variety of colors.
Trollers working the lake from
the reef area to Huron have been
doing well during daylight hours,
with the best bite lately now
being found around the islands,

with fishermen landing walleyes
running from 3 to 13 pounds.
The Huron bite has often moved
very close to shore as the walleyes
take advantage of massive concentrations of gizzard shad there this
time of year. Shad swim erratically
before dying in mass quantities as
the water temperatures drop into
the 40 F range. At night, trollers
are fishing water as shallow as
four feet deep, and then moving
offshore during daylight hours.
The mouths of the Huron and
Vermillion rivers offer a higher
chance to catch steelhead trout too,
as they prepare to ascend these
tributary streams in preparation
for spawning.
