New VGCC Division Aims to Help Every Student
Students at VGCC now have enhanced access to resources and services designed to help them achieve their
personal and educational goals. In Jan.
2012, the new Student Learning and
Success Center brought counseling, academic advising, tutoring, male mentoring and career services under one roof
in Building 1 on VGCC’s Main Campus. Similar services are available on
the three other campuses. Assistance is
readily available to guide each student
toward successful completion of a program of study, success in a career or success in transferring to a four-year institution.
“As faculty and staff, we want to
foster intense personal connections
with all VGCC students, so that they
feel that they are not on their own, and
theyreceivemotivation,encouragement
and assistance all along the way,” said
VGCC Dean of Student Learning and
Success Jennifer M. Johnson.

Chronicles: Summer 2012
Every ten years, colleges like VGCC that have been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Commission on Colleges must have their accreditation reaffirmed. SACS is scheduled to make its final decision on VGCC’s reaffirmation of accreditation in the summer of 2013. As part of this process, VGCC has created a
Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), a long-term course of action that addresses a topic or
issue related to improving student learning. The subject of this QEP is Academic Advising
and Career Planning, and the slogan is “Advising in 3D: Dream, Design, Discover!” For
more information, contact Jennifer M. Johnson at (252) 738-3408.

VGCC Financial Aid & Scholarships Can Help!
Vance-Granville Community College believes in providing an open door for all individuals to access higher education.
Financial assistance is available in a variety of forms to help
eligible students. In 2010-2011, 4,572 students at VGCC received a total of $12,324,652 in aid from various sources.
There are several different resources available to help
students. Through the VGCC Endowment Fund, the college
has provided more than 6,500 scholarships for students since
1982.
Other types of aid are administered by the VGCC Financial Aid Office. All students and prospective students are encouraged to complete a Free Application for Federal Student
Aid (FAFSA) online at: www.fafsa.ed.gov. Eligible students
may receive Pell Grants or other types of federal assistance,
in addition to state funds. Completing the FAFSA is all that is
required to be considered for most grants. Also, military veterans who wish to use their Veterans’ Education benefits may
contact the Financial Aid Office at (252) 738-3421.
VGCC also participates in the William D. Ford Federal
Direct Loan Program. Certain eligibility requirements apply,
and completing the FAFSA is the first step. Students are advised that these loans must be repaid.
Students must apply to be considered for all types of aid.
The charts on the right explain some of the differences between financial aid and Endowment scholarships. Students
may qualify for both!

to Start College While You’re Still in High School?
VGCC offers opportunities for local high school students (including public, private and home-schooled students) to get college credits, tuition-free, as part of the new state program, “Career and College

VGCC or a four-year university.
CCP offers three structured pathways for qualified students:
• College Transfer, in which students earn credits toward a
four-year degree;
14
• Career & Technical Education, in which students work toward
an entry-level job credential, certificate or diploma in a technical
