4 Week Unit Small Group Activities Charlie Horse
4 Week Unit Small Group Activities For Charlie Horse NAD Pathways Curriculum Grade 2 Juliette Horton Ruth Murdoch Elementary School 2011 © Juliette Horton, 2011 1 Unit Introduction Below are some important notes that should be of value as you organize your small groups when teaching the book, Charlie Horse, part of the Pathways Integrated English Language Arts Curriculum used in North American Adventist Schools currently, at the second grade level. Allow 20 minutes for each group activity, with a total of 1 hour and 20 minutes for teacher directed small group instruction and small group activities. As you assess the needs of your students, you will then decide if it would be best to group your students heterogeneously or homogenously. Prepare a two pocket folder for each child and label it small group activities. The front pocket can be labeled “finished” and the back pocket can be labeled “NOT finished”. Before officially starting the small groups, I always encourage teachers to spend some time (a couple of days) training their students in the best way to work within their groups and rotate from table to table (center to center) during small group learning time. Also, before beginning the small group activities, you should first introduce the story to the class as a (whole group). While reading the entire story to the students, give them the opportunity to read along in their own copy of the book. It is very beneficial to read the story more than once to the students at the beginning so that the students can become more familiar with the story before working independently in their small groups. While the teacher is directing a small group lesson, the other 3 groups will be working on activities from the Pathways Daily Lesson Guide for Charlie Horse, in addition to the activities that I created. Most of the time, it is best to have no more than 6 students to each small group. Try to choose a group leader for each week. These group leaders last for the entire week and lead out for each group activity. Use a timer to keep track of the 20 minute time frame and after the timer rings, the students rotate to the next table for the next group activity. Each finished activity goes in the pocket of their folder. Please take note that this is only a portion of the time that should be allotted to Language Arts. Teachers are usually encouraged to plan for students to spend at least two hours a day participating in Language Arts activities. The other 40 minutes can be spent working on other Language Arts concepts that must be covered in second grade. © Juliette Horton, 2011 2 Purchase some blank tapes and record yourself as you read the story, Charlie Horse. Record yourself reading the story twice on the same tape. On the other side of the tape, record yourself reading the riddles on the top of page six, to use during one of the group activities. Purchase index cards, along with a jar of words on colorful tiles. It would be beneficial if each child has his/her own black and white Mead notebook (not spiral bound). NOTE: ALL words (high frequency and vocabulary words) introduced, should be revisited at other times during the week. © Juliette Horton, 2011 3 WEEK ONE MONDAY GROUP 1 – Teacher directed instruction – Introduction of the high frequency words for Week 1, located on page 8 in the Charlie Horse Daily Lesson Guide.
