Somerset College Rugby
Canadian Tour 2014
Somerset College is a Pre-Prep to Year 12 co-educational non-selective school situated in the
immediate hinterland of the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. The Gold Coast enjoys an
international reputation as a tourist destination due to the expanses of golden white sand
beaches and world class surfing.
The College was founded in 1983 and it has grown rapidly over that time to a population
of 1,400 students. There are over 21 sports and activities at Somerset College, with Rugby
Union being one of the major boys’ pursuits. Over the years, the College has produced many
Hinterland, South Coast and Queensland Combined Secondary Schools XV players. Grant
Anderson is the College’s only Australian Schoolboy representative in recent years, where he
played against Scottish Schools in Sydney.
Mr Craig Bassingthwaighte, Headmaster, is a strong supporter of physical pursuits being
fundamental to a school curriculum. Sport at Somerset College is compulsory for all students
ranging from a strong Inter-House system to a competitive Inter-School competition.
Furthermore, as part of this sporting structure, Mr Bassingthwaighte continues the wonderful
work of the former Headmaster, Dr Barry Arnison, with his avid support of the Rugby Union
programme at Somerset College and this fourth tour to Canada.
Somerset College has hosted many inbound tours from a variety of countries over many
seasons. Schools from the United Kingdom, Japan, New Zealand and Canada are just a few.
A significant number of schools like the Collingwood School, Canada, have been regular
biennial visitors, forging an excellent and valued long term relationship over this time. A
highlight of this Rugby Programme was a visit to the College by Rugby School, UK when they
played the 1st XV on the Wyangan No1 Oval.
It has been very rare for Somerset College Rugby to tour. This Canadian Rugby Tour is only the
fourth in the College’s short history. The players and staff have planned this tour for the last
12 months and look forward to the rugby and cultural experiences with great anticipation.
Somerset College, the boys, their parents and staff sincerely thank those Canadian families
who have undertaken to host our squad during this tour. We look forward to a continuing
relationship in Rugby and trust that life-long friendships are forged.
Sponsors
A tour of this magnitude could not happen without the support of the many philanthropic
friends of Somerset College who have assisted by their sponsorship of Somerset College
Rugby. Our thanks and appreciation to:
In addition, our thanks to Colleen Chan,
Suzette and Conrad Smith (NU Pure
Spring Water) and Mark and Dianne
McClure for their significant financial
contributions to the tour.

The first you see the Somerset boys your backs are to the wall, to the wall
We’ll beat you to the rucks and we’ll beat you to the maul, to the maul
With our knees and boots ‘aruckin’ and our hearts the size of two
The Somerset boys are coming, coming to smash you
We wrote to (enter school we’re versing here) and to them we did say,
we did say
We’ll beat you to the ball and we’ll tackle you all day, you all day
With our knees and boots ‘aruckin’ and our hearts the size of two
The Somerset boys are coming, coming to smash you
Some say we’ll go to heaven, some say we’ll go to hell, go to hell
Some say we’ll ruck the devil and I know we’ll ruck him well, ruck him well
With our knees and boots ‘aruckin’ and our hearts the size of two
The Somerset boys are coming, coming to smash you
So watch out when we do, when we do, when we do!!!
