From The Principal’s Desk…
Thankyou to our very capable and enthusiastic gardeners
who gave generously of their time last Sunday to plant
out the garden beds around the new Brooke Street
Learning Centre & Library and school entrance. Special
thanks to our chief organisers Frances Grundy, Jane
Bennett and Darren Teal and well done to all of our other
parents, students and staff members who helped out on
the day. The garden beds look terrific and we are all
looking forward to seeing the plants grow and thrive. I
am sure the recent rains will get them off to a good start!
Planning is now well underway for the Official Opening
of the Brooke Street Learning Centre and Library on
Friday 15th June. Parents and well wishers are
encouraged to attend the ceremony and then stay on for
morning tea and also visit our open classrooms. This is
an opportunity to view not only the new building, but
also celebrate the end of the renovations in the main
building. Visitors to the College have marvelled at the
remarkable transformation! Thankyou to our Parents &
Friends Association for coordinating the catering for our
morning tea on this day.
Last week we were visited by Andrew Mason, Chief
Executive Officer of the Corangamite Shire. Andrew was
able to have a good look around our refurbished Brooke
Street Campus and we were able to discuss plans for the
Wilson Street Campus.
A parent forum titled Alcohol & Drugs – What's your
plan? was held on Monday this week to complement the
launch of our new Alcohol and Drug Resource Book – a
combined schools resource designed to support parents
and young people in their conversations about alcohol
and drug use. The book, written by parents for parents,
will be mailed out to each individual family who has a
secondary school aged child in the coming week. We
encourage you to read the information provided in the
book as we believe it will be a very valuable resource.
The Corangamite cluster of schools is presently preparing
an application for Trade Training Centre funding.
Schools can apply for Federal Government funds to
develop vocational education and training facilities
similar to those presently accessed by our students
through TAFE. Our network is preparing an application
which would see the main Trade Training Centre facility
built at Cobden, to service middle and upper secondary
students from the wider cluster of schools. School
Councillors have been invited to attend an information
session at Cobden Technical School on Tuesday 12th
June.
This is a busy time of the year for all members of the
College community, with students immersed in learning
and assessment and teachers preparing for end of
semester reports. We have received confirmation that the
transition from Victorian to Australian curriculum will
formally commence next year, with student progress in
English, Maths, Science and History being measured
against National rather than State standards in Prep –
Year 10. Other subjects will make the transition from
VELS (Victorian curriculum) to AusVELS (Australian
curriculum) in the years to follow.

winning their relay race at the Barwon South West Athletics in Warrnambool. Brooke will also be representing the College in
long jump after breaking a record with her jump of 4.74 metres.
Cross Country Carnivals:
Congratulations to Ethan Coates and Abby Burrows who were awarded the 12 year old age champions at the Prep – Year 6 Cross
Country and to Leura House for winning this event. Congratulations to Nicholas Borinelli, Paige Darcy, Devon Coates, Monique
Vagg, Stephanie Davis, Bradley Rees, Madison Helmore, Jake Noonan, Demi Holmes, Andrew Tickner, Sarah Hallyburton and Jason
Blackley for winning age champions and to Bullen Merri for winning this event. Congratulations to all students who have made it
through to the next level of competition in Noorat and Warrnambool (Primary) and HSSSA (Secondary).
Western Zone Hockey Tournament:
Seven Year 6 students will represent the College in Warrnambool tomorrow in a hockey competition. We hope that Brody Peach,
Tom Gough, Blake Payne, Ethan Coates, Sophie Sumner, Alanah Blake and Paddy Mitchell all enjoy this experience.
Environment Activity Day at Beeac Primary School:
All Year 6 students who are not playing in the hockey tournament tomorrow, will be attending a program at Beeac Primary School
devoted to environmental activities which is funded by Greening Australia. Mrs Robertson and Ms Grundy will be accompanying the
students.
Meet the Education Minister:
Four students were fortunate to travel to Colac on Tuesday to meet with the Minister for Education, the Honorable Martin Dixon.
Stephanie Wiffen, Callum McIlveen, Molly Helmore and Bonnie Ailey joined other students from around the district in a question
and answer session at the Colac Secondary College Community Library. Students were able to ask two questions per school. Molly
asked about the benefits to students of NAPLAN and Stephanie was going to ask about funding, but someone else had already asked
that question. The students appreciated this opportunity and will always remember this experience.
Alcohol – What’s Your Plan?
Our school nurse, Fiona Harrington, organised a combined schools forum on the issues of teenage drinking which was held at the
Killara Centre in Camperdown on Monday evening. A variety of speakers from Headspace, Police and Regional Youth Affairs
presented interesting and thought provoking information.
Information was presented on how drinking in adolescence can be harmful to young people’s physical development, particularly brain
development. The importance of having a plan for how to handle alcohol related issues with teenagers was reinforced. Fiona has led
the adoption of an Alcohol and Drug Resource Book that will be mailed out to all parents in the Corangamite Shire who have a
secondary school aged child. Congratulations must go to Fiona for bringing this vital resource to fruition.
End of Semester Reporting and Exams:
Exams have been prepared for all students in Years 10 and 11 and the timetable for these exams is on page 6 of this newsletter.
Students are reminded that if they cannot attend an exam, they must produce a medical certificate. Staff are finalising report formats
for the subjects that they teach and busily assessing work samples. We have a student free report writing day on Friday 8th June.
Exam Navigator Book:
Students studying a Year 12 subject have received their Exam Navigator booklet which outlines all that they need to know about their
exams this year. Included in the book is information about: timetables for both examination periods; rules governing exams and the
equipment permitted for each exam. It is vital that students read this booklet carefully and it is their responsibility to adhere to all of
the conditions set out in it.
Year 9 First Aid Course:
St John’s Ambulance personal delivered a Level 1 First Aid Course to our Year 9 students as a part of their Bronze Duke of
Edinburgh Award last week. The students learnt CPR and vital methods on how to deal with injuries.
Keys Please:
Peter Gstrein from Vic Roads presented the Keys Please program to our Year 10 students last week. He offered some information and
practical ideas for parents and students on how to use the learning to drive period and 120 hours of practice to help learners become
safer drivers. He highlighted the need to practice driving in all conditions and at all times of the day and night.
World Vision Global Leaders Convention:
Lucy Gstrein and Monique Vagg attended the World Vision Global Leaders Convention in Geelong last week. The Youth
Ambassador for this year spoke about her experiences in Ethiopia. Both girls agreed that their awareness was raised about what it is
like to be an ambassador for those people who live in poverty. The challenge for Monique and Lucy is to now conduct the 40 Hour
Famine this year at Camperdown College and spread the word about what this organisation does.
Verbal Combat:
Students in Year 6 – 10 attended a performance last week on cyber safety entitled Verbal Combat. Two performers presented a play
about teenage students and how they became caught up in cyber bullying through the use of mobile phones and Facebook. The play
presented a strong message about the dangers of cyber bullying and the ramifications for both the recipient and the bully.

Cross Country Carnivals:
Our Prep – Year 6 Cross Country was held nearly two weeks ago at the Camperdown Showgrounds and with the weather on our side,
it proved to be a great day. Mrs Tolland’s Cross Country courses in and around the showgrounds were enjoyed by all students and it
was fantastic to see the excellent effort that so many students put into their running. The fastest runners in each age group were then
selected to run at the District Cross Country in Noorat. This was to have been held last Friday, but due to inclement weather, was
rescheduled to Monday. Our students performed very well at this event and at the end of the day, Camperdown College was placed in
second position. Well done to all of our students who ran so well!
Congratulations to Molly Hedrick, Harry Sumner, Olivia Henzen and Abby Burrows who then progressed on to the Division Cross
Country in Warrnambool yesterday. These students all did very well and after a running against tough competition, Olivia Henzen
fought it out to finish in the top 10 in her age group and progress onto Regional level in Colac on Thursday 21st June – good luck
Olivia! A huge thankyou to Mrs Tolland for all of her work in making these Cross Country Carnivals such a success!
Adidas Fun Run:
In the weeks leading up to our school Cross Country, students in Prep – Year 6 busily gained sponsorship for the Adidas Fun Run
which was run in conjunction with the Cross Country as a school fundraiser. Students walked laps of a circuit that Mrs Tolland had
set up in the centre of the showgrounds before and/or after their Cross Country race. This proved to be a great event with many
parents and family members joining the students on their walk. It also turned out to be a great success in terms of raising money for
our school, with over $4,200 received in sponsorship and in excess of $2,400 in profit which will be used to buy new basketball
backboards, erect permanent soccer goals and revamp the mini golf course. Thankyou to all of the members of our school community
who supported this event.
Woolworths Earn & Learn:
Thankyou to everyone who has been supporting our College by sending in their Woolworths Earn & Learn stickers. This is a great
program, whereby schools can benefit from the money you spend at the supermarket. Woolworths are giving shoppers one Earn &
Learn sticker for every $10 you spend. These stickers can either be stuck onto a sticker card (more sticker cards are available at the
Brooke Street or Wilson Street Office) or just sent into school. We look forward to your continuing support.
Fun Day:
Today at the Brooke Street Campus, students in Prep – Year 6 enjoyed a variety of fun activities during lunchtime as part of Fun Day.
This event was the idea of a group of Year 6 students, who spent many hours of their time organising and preparing for the day, with
the aim of raising money to cover the postage costs for our Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes. Congratulations to Lauren
McIlveen, Abby Burrows, Georgia McDonald, Ebony Teal, Ellie Walsh, Sophie Stewart, Sophie Sumner, Kaitlyn O’Neil, Sian Jehu,
Megan Sadler and Brody Peach for their initiative and efforts.
Brooke Street Working Bee:
Over the weekend, the garden beds around our new Brooke Street Learning Centre and Library were transformed. A huge thankyou
must go to the small, but dedicated team, who spent many hours preparing the beds and planting the plants. The gardens are looking
fantastic and once the plants become established and grow, they will look very impressive.
Pupil Free Days:
Parents are reminded that students will not be required at school next Friday 8th June as this is a Report Writing Day. Also, as Monday
11th June is the Queen’s Birthday Public Holiday, the school will be closed.
Brooke Street Learning Centre & Library Official Opening Ceremony:
On Friday 15th June beginning at 10am, we will be holding the Official Opening Ceremony of our new building. This occasion will
also be used to celebrate the refurbishment of the main Brooke Street building, with the opportunity to stay for morning tea and see
our classrooms in action now that the renovations are complete. We hope that many of our families and community members will be
able to take advantage of this opportunity to come and see the excellent facilities that we have on offer for our students.

Division Cross Country Champions
Olivia Henzen, Abby Burrows, Harry Sumner and Molly Hedrick (pictured left)
all qualified for the Division Cross Country Championships in Warrnambool
yesterday due tho their fantastic performances at the District Cross Country in
Noorat on Monday. These four students each competed against 60 – 70 students
from the Warrnambool, Portland and Hamilton divisions, with each student
producing some excellent individual results – Olivia finished 9th, Harry finished
14th, Abby finished 19th and Molly finished 40th.
Due to Olivia’s finish in the top 10 for her age group, she has qualified for the
Regional Cross Country Championships to be held on Thursday 21st June at the
Botanical Gardens in Colac. Good luck Olivia!
Mrs Jacinta Tolland, Prep – Year 6 Sport Coordinator
Tom Gough tries out for the Victorian Hockey Team
On Sunday 20th May, Year 6 student Tom Gough was involved in the Victorian hockey team trials in Footscray, where he was part of
a squad of the top 40 under 12 players in the State. Tom, a talented and skilled hockey player, was nominated to try out for the State
hockey team due to his abilities in the sport.
The day involved Tom playing a series of mini games of hockey to show selectors his skills in a range of
positions. Although Tom was unsuccessful in attaining a final spot in the Victorian team, he showed great talent
amidst the best players in the State. Making it to the top 40 is a huge achievement in itself and one that we are all
very proud of at Camperdown College. We are sure that this experience will not only extend Tom’s abilities, but
also prepare him for another round of tryouts next year. Well done on this wonderful achievement Tom!

SRC Representatives quiz the Minister for Education
Student Representative Council members Bonnie Ailey, Stephanie Wiffen, Molly
Helmore and Callum McIlveen were given the chance to meet the Honourable Martin
Dixon, Minister for Education, on Tuesday 29th May in Colac. Our students joined
other local students from schools in our district for this question and answer session in
which each school was permitted to ask two questions.
Molly Helmore asked the Minister why the Government thought NAPLAN was
beneficial to students. The Minister answered by outlining that NAPLAN allowed for
comparison and provided information to assist in planning curriculum and identifying
strengths and weaknesses. He added that it provided information for teachers in
conjunction with other forms of assessment and that it was about feedback and
improving what teachers do.
Other questions that were asked related to reductions in TAFE funding, access for country students to specialist VCE subjects, the
number of country students who drop out of education and funding for rural schools. This was a fantastic opportunity for these
students and one in which they relished in.

Year 11 Melbourne Art Excursion
Miss Dennis’ VCE Art students travelled to Melbourne on Wednesday 16th May to gallery hop through some of Melbourne’s sites. We
visited the ACMI, the Ian Potter Gallery, the Melbourne Museum and the Hosier Laneway. We made our way through each gallery,
taking plenty of photos and commenting on most of the artworks.
We stopped by a couple of Heidelberg and Colonial paintings whilst Mrs Merrian Dennis, a
local artist, spoke to us about the different techniques used. We explored Graffiti Lane,
looking at the interesting artworks created by many people around the city. Our last stop in
Melbourne was the Melbourne Museum where we got to view an animation created by
Eleanor, who was a top media student in 2011.
We then made our way by bus to Ballarat to visit an exhibition at the Red Brick Gallery. Here
we saw lots of fantastic and inspiring artworks and once again took many photos before
arriving back in Camperdown by 6.00pm. Overall, the day was a wonderful learning
experience and everyone had lots of fun!

School for Student Leadership Update
We have been at the Snowy River Campus now for five weeks and
we are all really enjoying our time here. Whilst being at Snowy, we
have done a range of activities.
Some of our favourite activities have been bush dancing, surfing,
listening to guest speakers, a half day bike ride, safe food handling
& orienteering. We also participated in the NAPLAN testing.
Coming up here involved us having to put together a Community
Learning Project. We have decided to go on a few field days when
we return home. The field days will hopefully involve us taking
Year 4 students to a range of farms so that they can learn about
where our produce comes from.
We have had three Community Learning Project classes and we
have successfully started to organise and plan our CLP and
sponsorship.

Year 9 Rail Trail Adventure
On Wednesday 2nd May, Year 9 students set off on the Camperdown – Timboon Rail Trail in some not so flash weather! This camp
was part of our Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. We began our 25 kilometre bike ride from the outskirts of Camperdown to
Glenfyne. The cold wind and rain did not deter the laughs and smiles amongst the group!
Along the way, we had a break for lunch and a game of mini golf in
Cobden. After setting off again, the adventure continued although the
weather did not let up! Once we arrived at our campsite in Glenfyne,
we set up our tents and made a fire that we could all sit around. We
had practiced our cooking on trangias at school prior to our trip,
however, it was very different cooking in the cold elements of nature!
We proceeded to cook our own dinner from the supplies that we
brought with us, some meals were fabulous and some well, not so
fabulous!
In the morning, we volunteered our help to the Rail Trail, each having
the choice of planting trees or placing rubber mats over bridges with
the Environment Group.
Unfortunately, due to the inadvertent weather, our camp was cut short by one day and we were all bussed home to Camperdown,
although everyone had a fantastic time creating lots of memories.

Our Year 9 students are first aid qualified!
On Wednesday, students in Year 9 completed their Level 1 First Aid Certificate as
part of their Year 9 Program. This program lasted all day and was run by a qualified St
John Ambulance Officer.
The students practiced on mannequins to learn CPR and then learnt the basics of
treating burns, bites, fractures, sprains, strains and bleeding. All students completed a
written test at the completion of the day that, along with with ongoing supervision and
assessment throughout the course of the day, demonstrated their knowledge.
This was a fantastic day and all students should be very proud of gaining their Level 1
First Aid. This is a fantastic qualification to have. Well done!

Prep – Year 6 Cross Country Carnivals
Prep – Year 6 Cross Country and Walk-a-thon:
On Friday 18th May, students in Prep – Year 6 took part in Camperdown College’s annual Cross Country Carnival at the Camperdown
Showgrounds. Students participated in a long distance run which ranged from 700 metres for the younger age groups, to 3 kilometres
for students in our older age groups.
Each student who participated gained points for their house which were accumulated across
all age groups to determine our winner on the day. Congratulations to Leura who was our
house winner with a total of 381 points. Manifold came in second with 354 points and
Bullen Merri finished third on 312 points. Our age group champions for both boys and girls
were as follows:
5/6 year old
Mia Mills & Charlie Kempton
7 year old
Mirryn Ellerton & Harrison Bennett
5/6/7 year old Eliza O’Neil
8 year old
Sarah Wright & Ian Wilkinson
9 year old
Ruby Bennett & Bailey McDonald
10 year old
Molly Hedrick & Harry Sumner
11 year old
Olivia Henzen & Jack Helmore
12 year old
Abby Burrows & Ethan Coates
This year, students were also involved in a walk-a-thon as a part of our involvement with the Adidas Fun Run fundraising venture.
This saw students and many parents and friends participate in walking laps around the showgrounds during the running of age group
events throughout the afternoon. Students were sponsored to participate in both their cross country run and the walk-a-thon, raising
money for our College. Money raised will be put towards new basketball backboards, permanent soccer goals and rejuvenating our
mini golf course at the Brooke Street Campus.
All students did a fantastic job in striving to do their best and it was fantastic to see and hear students encouraging fellow classmates
and house members to complete the long distance run. It was also pleasing to see our so many parents and friends joining us on the
day as a part of our walk-a-thon.
Thankyou to those parents who volunteered their time to ensure that the event ran smoothly – it is much appreciated! A special
mention must go to Jen Burrows, Fiona Cole, Annett Hinkley, Claire Kempton, Marni Teal, David Wilkinson, Marcia Pellegrino,
Angela Riordon, Kelleigh Henzen, Russell Fagan, Peter James, Sam Tobias, Mark Coates and Lisa McDonald.
District Cross Country:
On Monday, 48 Year 3 – 6 students participated in the District Cross Country Carnival in Noorat. Rescheduled after being cancelled
due to wet weather, students participated in a long distance run throughout the reserve which ranged in distance from 1 kilometre to 3
kilometres. Our team was extremely strong this year with some determined and talented runners giving their all for Camperdown
College.
Many of our students finished within the top twelve runners in each age group, gaining well earned points for our school. These
excellent individual achievements combined to give Camperdown College a total of 97 points on the day, which saw us finish in
second place – only 6 points behind the overall winner. On an individual level, we had nine students finish in the top six positions for
their age group which is a great effort. Those achievements were as follows:
Olivia Henzen, 1st, 11 year old girls 3 kilometre race
Abby Burrows, 4th , 12 year old girls 3 kilometre race
Molly Hedrick, 4th, 10 year old girls 2 kilometre race

Alcohol & Drugs – What’s your plan?
Camperdown College and Cobden Technical School held a combined parent forum last Monday night titled Alcohol & Drugs – What's
your plan? The parent forum was to inform and educate parents in our community on issues surrounding adolescent use of drugs and
alcohol and the effects of alcohol on the adolescent brain. The event was held at the Killara Centre at 7.30pm and was publicised
through our school newsletter.
The night’s discussion focused on the ways that parents can keep their children safe and free from harm, specifically relating to
alcohol and drug use, by creating discussion at home and how parents are role models for their children. An informative component of
the discussion was how to make a plan with your child.
Guest Speakers included Leigh Bartlett from BATForce (Barwon Adolescent Taskforce). Leigh is a Regional Youth Affairs
Consultant who has recently been touring Victoria with the Australian Drug Foundation holding parent forums discussing the Parent
Alcohol Supply Legislation. Mark Powell, a Mental Health Clinician from HEADSPACE in Warrnambool, also presented and gave us
a brief overview of the research on adolescent brain development and how alcohol impacts on brain development. We were also joined
by Tania Barbary – Acting Senior Sergeant from Camperdown Police Station and John Keats – Youth Resource Police Officer in the
Corangamite area who informed us about the responsibility of parents when supplying alcohol to children, the Alcohol Supply
Legislation, on the spot fines, safe partying, registering your party, drink driving and the impact of cost of lives.
Our parent information night compliments the new Alcohol and Drug Resource Book which is a combined schools resource booklet
designed to support parents and young people in their conversations about alcohol and drug use.
The Alcohol and Drug Resource Book will be mailed out to each individual family with a secondary school aged child in the
coming week. I encourage you to read the information provided in the book as the book is written by parents for parents. We
hope this book is a valuable resource to our parents, young people, our school and our community.

Children need help to stay safe:
What is Internet Content Filtering Software?
Internet content filtering uses software to manage or limit access to online material that is considered offensive, inappropriate or
dangerous. The software can block access to:
 Unsuitable websites,
 Chat rooms,
 Newsgroups,
 Particular search engine results.
These software programs have been designed so that families can provide a safer online environment for their children. Depending on
the program that you choose, it can:
 Block access to websites containing pornography and other inappropriate material,
 Prevent access to adult chat services and newsgroups,
 Block emails containing profanity,
 Let you specify set times when a computer can and cannot be used (eg: cannot be used in the evenings after 8pm).
However, no single filter will completely safeguard yourself or your family from all offensive content and you cannot use more than
one filter at a time. So, make sure you understand exactly what features the filter that you have chosen has. Another way that you can
limit Internet access is via your web browser (eg: Microsoft Internet Explorer or Firefox).
What else do parents need to do to keep kids safe?
Installing software programs to help protect kids is an important step in protecting kids online. However this needs to go hand in hand
with parental supervision and education. Remember, no filtering program is 100% foolproof in blocking inappropriate content. Kids
may not know about the dangers of phishing or the potential dangers of downloading free software (spyware) or about the potential
harm of befriending people in online chat rooms. While parental supervision is a very effective way of protecting children, education
is also important because the more kids know about the potential dangers, the better the chances they can protect themselves.
A list of approved filtering packages is available at the Internet Industry Association website:
