69th Infantry Regiment Veteran Corps badge 54x70mm in gilt
and enamel with chain and bar with two forms of attachment by
Bernhard New York in original case of issue. The case has glued-in
handwritten greeting and carte de visite from the sender with
message on the reverse, scarce EF and worthy of further research,
despite a number of research items included in the lot (noted
undated newspaper article with photo of the sender’s funeral)
The regiment is a largely Irish unit dating back to the American
Civil War and known as the “Fighting Sixty-Ninth” (reputedly
named so by Robert E.Lee) and the “Fighting Irish”. It is from New
York City and part of the New York Army National Guard.
The carte de visite and glued-in message are from Lt Col Charles
Healy (retired), an ex-Spanish-American War veteran and head of
the Veteran Corps until his death; and the main greeting is named
to Patrick Healy of Belfast Ireland (clearly a relative). The sender
was awarded the Long and Faithful Service Decoration Class II (20
Years) in 1912, and this badge was sent to the receiver who had
been made an honorary member of the Corps in 1920 Est. $100

The Melbourne School of Pharmacy was established in 1881 by the
Pharmaceutical Society of Victoria and was conducted along the lines
of the London School of Pharmacy. It was initially established at the
Melbourne Technological Museum (the current site of State Library
Victoria in Swanston Street). The school later changed its name
to the Melbourne College of Pharmacy, by which it was commonly
known until the 1950s, even though the official name of Victorian
College of Pharmacy was adopted in 1921. After a number of moves
around the central city and Fitzroy, it finally located to its present site
in Parkville in 1960, still under the auspices of the Pharmaceutical
Society of Victoria. In 1977 it became an independent organisation,
and in 1992 was formally merged with Monash University

Victor York Richardson (7th Sept 1894-30th Oct 1969) has a
number of claims to fame – as an Australian cricket representative
and Test captain, Australian representative in baseball and South
Australia in golf, South Australian tennis champion, captain-coach
of Sturt Football Club, state representative and winner of South
Australian football’s highest honour – the Magarey Medal in
1920. While also being a dab hand at lacrosse, basketball and
swimming, he is also remembered as the maternal grandfather of
the Chappell brothers (Ian, Greg and Trevor).
A talented right-handed batsman, and at one time rated as the
best fielder in the world, his cricket career spanned 1918 to 1938
representing South Australia, and he played 19 times for Australia
between 1927 and 1936.
His football career lasted from 1915 to 1927 (interrupted by the
Great War), he captained Sturt on four occasions, won the club’s
best and fairest award twice, and captained South Australia in 1923.
After retiring from first class cricket he went on to become a
respected radio commentator, forging a partnership with former
England Test captain Arthur Gilligan. In 1954 he was awarded
an OBE for his services to cricket, including his presidency of
the Country Carnival Cricket Association. To honour his memory,
the South Australian Cricket Association dedicated the “Victor
Richardson Gates” and the road leading to them at the Adelaide
Oval – these gates remain, though relocated, after the recent
major renovations to the ground
