The President’s Desk
•Saturday Morning Breakfast Re-Cap
by Tina Kirbie
President
It takes a special group of people coming
together to accomplish what we achieved at
our 50th Anniversary Handy Market. Despite
the worst weather conditions we had ever
experienced, your Member-owned Company
was still able to set an attendance record of
729 participating Member-Dealers at our
Spring Market. We realize that we would not
have been able to achieve such a feat without
the concerted efforts of our Member-Dealers,
our Vendors and our Employee Team.
The sales generated at this two and a half
day event are still coming in. This year, due
to the inclement weather affecting travel
to our Market, we amended our standard
procedures pertaining to the Dirty Dozen and
coupon purchases which are normally tied
to physical attendance at the Market. This
Market, we are honoring Dirty Dozen spiff
for all Members who were pre-registered for
the Market but were unable to attend due to
the weather. In addition, all coupon purchases, as well as, planogram orders and orders
from the Deep Discount Store, will also
be honored for all pre-registered MemberDealers who were unable to attend due to the
weather. This is the RIGHT thing to do for
our member stores.
For those Members unable to attend
the Market, I would also like to provide an
excerpt from the “State of the Company”
presented at the Saturday morning breakfast.
As many of you know, Handy was founded by 13 visionary Houston-area hardware
store owners who had the wisdom to band
together cooperatively to increase purchasing
power, gain volume discounts and achieve efficiency through greater numbers. They also
knew that to continue to grow they needed
new members. From those 13 original stores
in 1961 your Company has grown today to
1,280 Member-Dealers in 12 states, Belize,
Bermuda, Mexico and Puerto Rico. Isn’t that
fantastic?
From first year sales of $156,072 your
Member-owned Company has grown to sales
in excess of $235,000,000 in 2010.
And from a company that began selling product out of a rented facility, your
Member-owned Company has grown to have
the capacity of more than one million square
feet of warehouse space at the end of 2010.
Today we have 560,000 square feet in our
Houston facility and 463,000 square feet in
our Meridian facility.
What these facts should tell you is that
through these 5 decades, we have been able
to grow in our highly competitive industry,
because we do many things “RIGHT”.
• We have the RIGHT products
• We sell them at the RIGHT prices
• We deliver them at the RIGHT time
• They arrive in the RIGHT condition
• Your company is Managed by the
RIGHT team of employees
• and we have the RIGHT MemberDealers – who have been vital to your
Member - owned Company’s success.
Through the years what has defined the
“RIGHT” Member-Dealer for Handy is not
how much profit that Member brings to the
bottom-line but more the relationship that
develops over time.
No doubt, good profits are needed and
desirable, but long-term mutually satisfactory “Member-Dealer” partner relationships
are really what Handy searches for in the
“RIGHT” Member-Dealer. That’s how we
started, and how we remain today.
At the last Market we compared the
wheels that drive the economy to those of
a car stuck in the mud. Seeming to make
progress out of the mud only to slide back in
the mud again.
Using a similar car analogy, the economy
now is like trying to start a car, you turn on
the ignition time after time and finally it
turns over and starts the car. You’re feeling
a little more confident that the car will get
you where you want to go but there are still
repairs to be made to make certain that the
car is running consistently for the long run.
On a positive note, the index of leading economic indicators, a composite of 10
economic and financial benchmarks, rose 1%
in December from November. During the
second half of the year, this index increased
3.3%, compared with a first-half yearly gain
of 2.4%.
On another positive note, the Institute
for Supply Management reports that the
manufacturing sector continued to grow in
December, 2010 with December being the
17th consecutive month of growth for this
sector and the overall economy’s 20th consecutive month of growth. With December’s
strong readings in new orders and production,
economists and business leaders believe that
the momentum is in place going into the first
quarter of 2011.
Even Goldman Sachs economists, who
have been among the most pessimistic in
recent months, raised its growth outlook for
2011 to 2.7% from a previous prediction of
2%.
The Institute for Supply Management
index of non-manufacturing activity (which
includes wholesale and retail services sector)
also grew for the 12th consecutive month
in December 2010. The non-manufacturing
index registered 57.1 percent, 2.1 percentage
points higher than the 55 percent registered in
November and indicating continued growth
in this sector. With the non-manufacturing or
service sector, which accounts for two-thirds
of the Gross Domestic Product, reporting
higher growth, this is very positive news.
On still another positive note, despite high
unemployment, consumers who represent
70% of the economy unleashed three years of
pent-up demand during the key 2010 shopping season. Sales in the 2010 holiday period
were up more than 5%. That’s the biggest
year-over-year growth since 2005.
In summary, the signs continue to suggest
that the economic expansion will continue well
into 2011.
Which now leads us to addressing our two
bold 2010 initiatives – The computer system
conversion including our website and our
new Meridian warehouse.
Much of 2010 was devoted to developing,
testing and understanding our new computer
system and website.

The President’s Desk (cont)
And although many of you may be questioning how much testing
we actually did on this project, I can assure you of two things – First,
there have been a lot of people both inside and outside our Memberowned Company that have worked very hard on this project. Second
– we are working diligently to amend areas that need to be improved. I
hope you agree that much progress has been made over the past several
weeks. We will continue to address your concerns and listen to your
suggestions on how to improve the system to better meet your needs
until it is right for everyone. It is a Top priority for us.
In particular, we have three major areas we are continuing to address:
■ Drop Shipment invoices that are electronically transmitted (EDI
invoices) and credits
■ Picking Errors
■ Service Level
On the issue of EDI invoices and credits, we should be caught up
within the next two, 2-½ weeks providing you your invoices and credits
on a more timely basis.
On the issue of picking errors – as we went live on our new system,
we have realized that not all the information converted properly from
the old system to the new system. We continue to address this situation
as well as offer continual training to our employees so that your orders
will be filled “RIGHT”.
On Service Level – During the conversion to the new computer
system there was a period where our ability to place inventory purchase
orders was stressed. What happened can best be described using another vehicle analogy. Think about an 18-wheeler that is driving along
at 60 miles per hour. The truck comes to a red light and stops. The light
turns green and the truck proceeds. However, it takes some time to get
back up to 60 miles per hour. In essence, this is what our purchasing
department experienced. Like the 18-wheeler it is going to take time
to ramp up our inventory levels to where they should be. I pledge to
you that we will regain our previously high fill rate. You should have
seen some improvement in your last two deliveries and within the next
couple of weeks we should return to our normally high standard of
product availability.
Finally, to the other major project of 2010 – our second distribution
center in Meridian, Mississippi. It is completed, other than landscaping, and is shipping product. The staff in Meridian are working hard
to get your orders “RIGHT,” and they are improving every week. The
balancing act of moving business from Houston to Meridian has been
challenging, but we’re all getting better at it every week. As the owners
of this company, you have every reason to be proud of this new, stateof-the-art facility.
I want to extend a permanent invitation to any of you to stop in and
visit either of your distribution centers if you ever have the opportunity.
This Market and 6Breakfast are special. It is our 50th Anniversary. If
you pause to just consider that, you realize that you, that we, represent
something really special. You may think what I’m going to say is corny,
but it’s true, and I want you to think about it. You and your companies
and this company are realizations of the American Dream. It’s the
age-old story of success. Thirteen small businesses had a great idea,
the courage to pursue it, the determination to achieve, and the fortitude
to work hard to achieve their goals. They took a big risk, they worked
hard, and they suffered hardships along the way. They recovered and
they were successful in the end.
That’s us. That’s you. You are what makes this country great.

Turn Back the Clock
•The Year Was 1991
by Spencer Jackson
Graphic Designer
It’s hard to believe how far Handy Hardware has come in only 50
years. From such humble beginnings, we have become a force in the
hardware industry. Let’s take a trip in the “Way Back” Machine to
see how the world has changed in the last 50 years. Handy Hardware
has seen some incredible things over the years. From the Free love of

Identify Yourself!
• Handy updates its corporate image and introduces a new logo
From June 2002 issue of the ‘Scanner’
Over the years, many of
you have grown accustomed
to the Handyman logo as
Handy Hardware’s corporate identity. You’ve watched
him change through time to
remain politically correct.
You’ve met his “family,”
greeted him at the entrance to
a sundry of Handy Markets,
and invited him to adorn the
entryways and storefronts
of your retail locations. As
our industry continues to
change, and Handy poises
itself for its own challenges on
the horizon, the Company’s
management team and Board
of Directors have determined that it’s time to update
Handy’s corporate identity;
together, they’ve chosen a
logo that will easily take the
Company forward through its
next 40 years. With the choice
to venture into new states,
and in an effort to help its
stores be more easily recognized as Handy members,
the Company has unveiled a
new logo, designed by Icon
Marketing. The logo was
developed to portray the ideals of Handy that have made
the company so successful for
over 40 years. Why choose a
bolt-head design? The answer
is obvious. Just as a bolt represents a strong tie that binds
together the foundations of
building and construction,
Handy is the bolt that binds
its members to its vendors to
create a durable, lasting and
profitable relationship. The
six sides of the bolt represent
the principles upon which
Handy was first founded and
those the Company still puts
into practice today — Quality, Value, Service, Vision,
Strength and Excellence. By
striving for these principles
on a daily basis, and encouraging our members to do the
same, Handy ensures its mission to earn the business of
it’s Members while respecting
their independence and helping them effect their competitive price image in the marketplace. Finally, the selection
of the colors — blue, gold
and grey. As a patriotic color
that also emits assertiveness
balanced by conservativeness,
blue was an obvious choice
for the dominant background
color. The “H” is etched in
gold, a color of wealth and
prosperity as well as one
known to portray creative
optimism. Last, the tones of
gray that comprise the bolt
remind us to also strive for
day-to-day security for the
Company and it’s Members.
We are excited about this new
identity and look forward to
seeing it used across the nine
states Handy now serves. We
hope that our Members and
vendors will also embrace
its use and take to heart the
meaning behind the design.
Together, let’s continue to strive
for Quality 1st in all we do.

HANDY HARDWARE’S 2010
DRIVER OF THE YEAR
On January 20, 2011 I celebrated
19 years at Handy. I have had
many routes since I started and
each one has been an adventure.
I was born in Rio Grande City,
and at the age of 6 or 7 we moved
to Galveston County. My mother
had cancer and we had to be near
MD Anderson Hospital. I was 9
years old when she passed away.
We settled in Alvin and I attended
Alvin schools.
I started my first real job at a
drilling rig as a roughneck. The
job was hard and the hours long.
By then I also had a sweetheart
and I needed money to take her
out on dates (which wasn’t very
often since I was always working).
Because of the lack of time to date,
my girlfriend asked her brotherin-law to find me a job with him,
and I started working at K-Mac
Vacuum Trucks.
At K-Mac I started as a driver,
then a mechanic, then a driver
again, and I stayed for 12 years.
During those 12 years, I married
my girlfriend, Yolanda, and we had
3 children, DJ, Trina, and Aaron.
It was time to think about my
children and our future. At K-Mac
I had no insurance or retirement,
and I had to get a job where we
could have those needs met.
On January 20, 1992, I started
working at Handy Hardware. It
was very different from what I was
used to. For the first week, I was
driving everywhere and I don’t
think I went home until Thursday
of that week. Since it was before
cell phones, my family didn’t
know where I was. My wife was
so happy when I finally made it
home.
My first route took me south to
Rio Grande City, my hometown,
and other towns in the valley. I
would leave on Wednesday around
2:00 p.m. and would return Friday
evenings. I ran that route until my
wife suggested I change it. My
oldest son was now a teenager and
he needed his dad at home. My
new route took me to San Antonio,
Austin, Marble Falls and surrounding areas. It made for a long day,
but I was home every evening for
dinner, a late dinner. I changed
my route again, going to Dallas
and surrounding areas and did
that for a few years. Now I have
the local route which takes me to
Katy, West Columbia, Alvin and
surrounding areas.
Some of my most memorable
customers were the Woods from
Austin, Borregas Electric and Zarsky Lumber in Rio Grande City.
The most entertaining person I’ve
met is an employee at Bob Barta
Lumber in West Columbia. Gregg
is always making me laugh with
his sense of humor.
When my children were younger we used to go fishing, bowling
and we loved to eat out. Now my
wife and I enjoy going to garage
sales, antiquing and still going out
to eat. My children are now grown
and we are grandparents to 3 little
girls from my oldest son DJ and
his wife Tara.
Trina, my daughter, lives in
Dallas and works for Sam Houston
State University. My youngest
son, Aaron, is still living at home
and we enjoy his company
I have enjoyed working at Handy all these years and have met
some great people along the way
like Mr. Tipton, David Washburn,
Carol Arthur, and Tina Kirbie.

Some Information on the “Reduction of
Lead in Drinking Water Act”
S.3874
Signed into law: January 4, 2011
Effective date:
January 2014
Congress recently passed the Reduction
of Lead in Drinking Water Act. The law
provides for a 36-month implementation
period, after which time manufacturers
and importers will be required to comply
with the new standard. It uniformly reduces
the lead standard for pipes, pipefittings
and plumbing fittings from as much as 8%
to 0.25% across the nation, which is consistent with the current laws in California,
Vermont and Maryland.
Summary
Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act
– Amends the Safe Drinking Water Act to
exempt from prohibitions on the use or
sale of lead pipes, solder, and flux: (1)
pipes or plumbing fittings or fixtures, including backflow preventers, that are used
exclusively for non-potable services such
as manufacturing, industrial processing,
irrigation, outdoor watering or any other
uses where the water is not anticipated to
be used for human consumption; or (2)
toilets, bidets, urinals, fill valves, flushometer valves, tub fillers, shower valves,
service saddles, or water distribution main
gate valves that are two inches in diameter
or larger.
Redefines “lead free” under such Act to
mean: (1) not containing more than 0.2%
lead when used with respect to solder and
Philip Tews,
Laura Roquemore,
Product Manager
Lead Replenishment Specialist
flux (current law); and (2) not more than
a weighted average of 0.25% lead when
used with respect to the wetted surfaces of
pipes and pipe and plumbing fittings and
fixtures.
Establishes a formula to calculate the
weighted average lead content of a pipe
or pipe of plumbing fitting or fixture.
Commonly used brasses, such as brass
alloy per ASTM B283, UNS C37700,
have a lead content ranging from 1.5% to
2.5%. This amount of lead content makes
it unsuitable for use in a lead-free valve
application.
All manufacturers of brass plumbing
components are currently or already have
reformulated the brass that they use in
producing their products. This will result in
new model numbers and increased costs.
Some suppliers now offer lead-free brass
— a specially formulated alloy whose lead
content is small enough to fall below the
mandated limit of 0.25%. However, this
brass has so far been used only in simply
machined fixtures and fittings such as
pipes and elbow joints.
Some manufacturers have noticed that the
regulations don’t mandate totally lead-free
components: just a weighted average lead
content of wetted surfaces (as a percentage
of the overall system). So it might be theoretically possible to use a brass valve if,
for instance, all other wetted components
in the system were made of nonleaded
materials such as stainless steel. However,
the combination of variable sourcing, the
potential for last minute design changes,
and the calculation of weighted average
lead content for every assembly make this
solution too troublesome for most manufacturers.

Despite the arctic blast affecting Houston and

Like I said in my last Scanner article, we are

With the new warehouse up and running,
a new software package in place and the
spring 2011 Market, the purchasing department at Handy has been a very busy place. It
has been a tremendous task to fill the Meridian facility, develop new computer skills and
follow through on the best attended Market
in Handy’s 50 year history. With these events
comes opportunity, risk and a lot of checking
and double checking to make sure the jobs at
hand are done properly and in a timely manner. Soon, we will begin working on our Fall
Market to be held August 18, 19 & 20 in San
Antonio, Texas. With three Markets annually,
a lot of time, thought and effort is spent on
these major promotional events of the year.
The purchasing department has evolved a
lot in the past year with the addition of three
merchandise replenishers, Travis Patterson,
Shelley Mayes and Robert Hill. All three have
been sent to school to learn to use our purchasing software from JDA (known as E3) and all
three are certified in the use of E3. Buying for
two warehouses, serving over 1,200 members
and tracking around 48,000 total warehouse
items is quite a task. These new replenishment
specialists, along with Lupita Rios and Laura
Roquemore, work as a team with their respective product managers to oversee and maintain
our inventory.
Despite a nationwide winter storm, our 50th
Anniversary Spring Market ended up being
tremendous . We were worried about attendance on Friday morning but by that afternoon, our Members began to pour in. Saturday
was a very busy and productive day. It’s
always good to see familiar faces and friends
at the Market, and being able to help them in
any way I can. In my opinion, the Saturday
night party was exceptional!
At Handy, we really depend on our vendors
to step up and do things for us they don’t do
for other customers. The purchasing department pressures vendors to make as many
Member calls as they can and educate our
Members about their products. We are also
asking vendors to be more imaginative in their
Market presentation and bring new, innovative
booths to the Markets. With the addition of a

Handy Hardware is proud to nominate Jeffery Peters and Isaac
Smith for the National Retail Hardware Association (NRHA)
Young Retailer of the Year.
Jeffery Peters is being nominated for the NRHA Young Retailer
of the Year for not only running a successful business, but also
for his high standings within his own community. Ever since
opening Jack’s Home Improvement Center in 2003, Jeffery has
been building his business literally from the ground up. When
Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, he supported his community by opening his doors the very next day. When Jeffery isn’t
running the store, he volunteers his time and energy to a variety
of community activities from youth sports to a war memorial.
Jeffery is a shinning example of the next generation of business
owner and we are fortunate to have him.
Isaac Smith is being nominated for the NRHA Young Retailer
of the Year for spearheading the growth of several departments
including a 25% increase in their paint department. Isaac began
working full-time in his family-owned and operated store in
2005 and is currently the Head of Marketing and Purchasing. He
developed a consistent advertising campaign in print, on TV and
over the internet as well as launching Matt’s Cash and Carry’s
