Atlanta 101
ATLANTA, often referred to as “The A” or “Hotlanta”, is one of the largest
metropolises of The South, a term used to reference the southeastern and south
central regions of the United States. It is a city with a deep history, best known as
the home of Coca-Cola and the birthplace of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. It is a diverse city with southern charm and one you will not get tired of
exploring!
To the right you will find a map of
Atlanta. Circling the city is Interstate
285, which is also referred to as “The
Perimeter.” The term “ITP”, is used to
describe something that is inside the
perimeter, and “OTP”, to describe
something that is outside of the
perimeter.
The blue star on the map indicates
Emory main campus’ approximate
location, which is in the Druid Hills/North
Decatur neighborhood. The red star
indicates the approximate location of
downtown Atlanta. The green star
indicates the approximate location of
Hartsfield-Jackson International airport,
which is one of the busiest airports in
the nation.
The MARTA, Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, is Atlanta’s public
transportation system which is consists of both bus and metro rail service. It
functions inside the perimeter and can help you navigate the city for a fare of
$2.50. More information on this will be provided in the “Navigating Atlanta”
section of this guide.

Neighborhoods Surrounding Emory
Below is a map showing the neighborhoods in closest proximity to the university
with short descriptions of what you can find there.

Emory is located in the Druid Hills
neighborhood. This area is mainly
residential with several large gated
apartment complexes.
Decatur (10-15 minutes from campus):
This “small town” is located 10-15
minutes away from Emory. Downtown
Decatur has restaurants, bars, and
boutiques that Emory students
frequent.
Morningside/Virginia-Highland (10-15
minutes from campus): At the center of
the Morningside/Virginia-Highland
neighborhoods is North Highland
Ave, a trendy street with a lot of bars
Info made available through:
http://blog.promove.com/atlanta/atlanta-neighborhood/
and restaurants.
Candler Park/Inman Park (10-15 minutes from campus): These artsy neighborhoods
have houses and small apartments for rent. Located between these two
neighborhoods is the Little Five Points district with restaurants, hipster bars, and secondhand shops.
Midtown (20 minutes from campus): Midtown consists of mostly high-rise living or
duplexes near Piedmont Park - a large park located close to downtown with biking and
walking trails and a lot of open green space. The main drag in Atlanta, Peachtree
Road, runs through Midtown, and there are bars and clubs along both Peachtree Street
and nearby Crescent Avenue.
Buckhead (20-25 minutes from campus): Buckhead is Atlanta’s main shopping district
and most ritzy neighborhood.

Google Maps: A Tool for Planning your Trip
Google Maps is a great resource to use when trying to plan your
trip/outing. There is an application for iPhone and Android Phones
available so you can take it on the go! There is a function on both
the website and application that helps you plan your trip if you
plan on using public transportation or walking/biking to your
destination. Visit http://maps.google.com to try it out!
MARTA: Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit System
If you do not have a car you can use MARTA, the
public transportation system, to get around!
Standard fares are $2.50 and include transfers
between buses and metro trains. You should bring
cash if it’s your first time riding MARTA and do not
have a Breeze Card/MARTA Card. Breeze cards
can be purchased and reloaded at the metro
stations with cash or credit cards. If you plan on
using MARTA frequently it may be better to buy a
monthly student pass, which can be purchased at
the DUC Info desk or online. For more information on
all things MARTA download the app on your phone
or visit their website: http://www.itsmarta.com/
Zipcar
Zipcar has made it easier for college students to get around
by providing a car-sharing program where you pay to use a
vehicle by the hour. They have a wide variety of cars
available right on campus that you can use! For more
information or to register visit: http://www.zipcar.com/emory
Uber & Lyft
Uber and Lyft are both transportation companies where you
can request a driver through a phone application to take
you to your destination. Rides with these companies are
typically significantly cheaper than what a taxi would cost
(if you use UberX). You also have the option of splitting fares
on the application with friends!
