Rabbi Herbert N. Brockman
“My House Shall be Called a House of Prayer
for All People”
When I looked around our congregational “house” in January, my heart kvelled.
I thought of those words of the prophet Isaiah. Our “house” was filled with all
people. In the second week of January we welcomed guests from the Columbus
House overflow shelter. It was our turn to host Abraham’s Tent for a week and
provide a “home” for the homeless. This is our 7th year being one of the original
congregations to develop this program. Members of our Life is Delicious provided
the dinners and bag lunches and volunteers got up every morning to make a hot breakfast. Some members
staffed the overnights and our youth group gave our guests a tour of the synagogue and shared our 175 year
history. It was, as the young people say, awesome. And this year, because of our long history and experience,
Columbus House asked us to take in women for the first time. While it was a bit strained at first, having men
and women, within a few days they had all built a respectful relationship and the coed practice now is assured.
As our guests were leaving for the last time, they handed me a note.
LEADERSHIP
A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
“The time I spent at CMI was very pleasant. Coming from Columbus House to start a new program was
unexpected, yet because of your kindness I found it very warming. The “Shalomie Homies” (a group of our youth
groupers) are great. They welcomed us here and gave us an educated tour of our Church (sic!) The knowledge
that the young people have about their place of worship is awe inspiring....” Yes, we all have a right to kvell.
Then, on Friday of that week, we celebrated our annual tribute to the Rev Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. What a night!
500 people joined us to worship, to sing, and to rock to the music of our own Afro-Semitic Experience. (This was
a particularly special year as the Experience was celebrating its 18th year of existence where it all begin at our
MLK service). We were all inspired by 17 other religious leaders from across the religious spectrum and were
moved to tears by David Goodman, brother of Andrew Goodman, one of the 3 young civil rights martyrs slain in
Mississippi during Freedom Summer in 1964.
Here are a few comments made to me following the service. From one of the clergy: “Thank you for inviting me to be a part of such a hopeful, meaningful event as tonight....This world we share is so very challenging right now, but the time we spent together in prayer, song and love earlier this evening was a true
blessing.”
By a new member of CMI: “I was so moved by the MLK service last night that I felt I had to write and thank you for
organizing the amazing experience...The service was inspiring and uplifting--everything we could have hoped for.
It makes me proud to be a member of the congregation.”
A member of the band: “It was a powerful evening. Everyone involved really brought their best selves to the service and it resonated in ways none of us could have imagined.”
A long time member of the congregation wrote: “Eloquence escapes me when I try to describe my joyous personal experience Friday evening...Early on I scanned the Bima and had a vision when what I saw and heard was
suddenly replaced by the sights and sounds of Thursday’s Republican debate. When my view of our Bima returned I was so grateful that this is where we were, where our people were. Later David Goodman made a similar
affirming observation. At the end of the evening, I felt as if I was sixteen again, brimming with faith and hope.”
Indeed that evening, the congregation made up of such diversity of race and gender and faith truly represented
in microcosm the original words of the prophet which spoke to a time not yet, but of possibility. That evening we
were “a “house” of prayer for all people.” It was a moment in time that gives us hope for the future.

LEADERSHIP
Cantor Arthur Giglio
March is harkening Springtime
and the thaw of winter. It is also
Erev Purim on March 23 at 7:00
p.m. It is an evening of fun and
mayhem as the Megillah is read
by Rabbi Brockman in a most
unique way and who knows
what other magical merriment.
Remember! “Oh today we’ll
merry, merry be and nosh some hamentaschen”.
Mark it on your calendars, bring the family, the kids,
the grandparents and don’t forget to save room for
all those yummy hamentaschen (I especially like the
poppy seed)!
It is also time for me to send a shout out for the
CMI fund raising event of the year. In the past it
was called the Cantor’s Concert. This year we are
giving it a slightly different twist and calling it “Cantor
G Presents:” And we are particularly blessed to
present the wonderful Klezmer ensemble “Isle of
Klezbos”. They are, and I quote, “a soulful, fun-loving
powerhouse all-gal klezmer sextet touring from
Vienna to Vancouver since 1998.” Powerhouse is
certainly the correct word to describe them. Every gal
is an extraordinary musician and they will have you
on your feet and dancing in no time flat! Go to the
website, www.klezbos.com and watch the video called
“Uncle Moses Wedding Dance” and you will see just
what I mean. It will be a joyous day of music that will
celebrate our Jewishness and our diversity. It will be
a very special family event that will leave you grinning
from ear to ear.
March also brings us the first B’nei Mitzvah of 2016
starting with Zoe Hoffman-Komrat on March 16th.
These children are our legacy and they bring to bear
all of their studies since they began religious school. It
is not just the Cantor having them for six months and
teaching them everything thing they know. Sounds
good for the Cantor but that is not reality. It is a
learning process beginning when they are in Pre-K up
until they are ready to come to Rabbi Brockman and
me for their B’nei Mitzvah studies. It is the years of
study in our religious school that cultivates the young
adults who become our Bar and Bat Mitzvot. These
children are the Jews who in the future will be on
our committees and boards and we must be there to
support them and gently guide them into their future
rolls of leadership. So, join us on a Shabbat morning
and kvel along with the rest of us for our B’nei
Mitvzvah. They are a celebration of our future and we
are blessed by being allowed to share in their simcha.

PRESIDENT’S
MESSAGE
CANTOR’S NOTES
Alan Lakin
As I write this in late
January, we are actively
interviewing for an interim
Executive Director. As you
read this, it is anticipated
that person is in place
and assisting us as we
move into the next phase
of reassessing our staffing needs and filling open
position(s). This process will probably take a few
months. Thank you to the many of you who offered
to help out as we go through the transition process.
While the staff was able to keep everything
running smoothly, it was great to know there were
volunteers to call on if help was needed.
The Nominating Committee is working on a slate for
Board of Trustee officers and Board members to fill
expiring or vacant Board seats. Much effort goes
into ensuring the Board is representative of the
congregation - women and men, older and younger,
empty nesters and families with children of school
age…. The committee makes sure prospective
nominees understand the responsibilities that go
with the position they may accept. And once the
election is completed at the annual meeting in
June, it is that newly elected Board that influences
the focus of the congregation for the coming year.
And, once again, it is time for the Board, working
closely with the professional staff, to develop next
year’s budget. It begins with various board
Continued on page 7...
The congregation joins us
in congratulating our member
and former Town of Hamden Mayor
Scott Jackson
on his recent appointment as
Commissioner of the
State Department of Labor
for the State of Connecticut.

In December 2015, Congregation Mishkan
Israel helped to form the Jewish Community
Alliance for Refugee Resettlement (JCARR),
a collaboration of four synagogues working
together to co-sponsor refugee families arriving
in our area. Welcoming refugees is intricately
connected to our Jewish tradition, our heritage,
and to our recent history of being refugees and
wishing there had been more people reaching
out to help us. JCARR co-sponsors refugees
who come through IRIS, the Integrated Refugee
and Immigrant Services. Refugees may come
from Iraq, Afghanistan, Congo, Eritrea, Sudan,
even Syria. We will sponsor families from any
country and any religion. Jean Silk serves as the
Coordinator of JCARR, which is supported by the
Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven and the
Jewish Community Relations Council.
Susan Millen ([email protected])
is the leader of CMI’s refugee resettlement
team. Our team works with teams from Temple
Emanuel, Congregation Beth-El-Keser Israel,
and Congregation B’nai Jacob in task forces that
deal with Housing, Transportation, Education and
Cultural Orientation, Healthcare, Employment,
Legal Services, Fund Raising and Finances.
For each refugee family we sponsor, we need
to raise at least $ 5,000 to help subsidize rent
and other necessities for half a year, after
which families are expected to be independent.
Volunteers start working before a new family
arrives. They find affordable housing, furnish
and supply the home, and collect clothing.
JCARR volunteers meet the new families at
the airport, offer them a warm welcome, and
provide a culturally appropriate, meal upon their
arrival. They help them enroll in English classes,
register children for school, learn to use public
transportation, navigate the American health
care system, and find jobs. In some cases,
sponsors obtain a donated car for refugees who
know how to drive and are able to get a license.
Our congregations help refugees adjust to dayto-day life in our culture by providing cultural
orientation and organizing social events that help
us get to know each other. As we work through
challenges in cross-cultural communication, as we
resolve problems that arise, as we share social
experiences together, we come to understand and
appreciate our differences and to recognize our
commonalities, and long-lasting friendships are
often the result!
As we prepare for the new family we are looking
for possible leads for renting apartments,
donations of household goods in good condition,
and employment leads. As we know more about
the family we will be able to be more specific.

IRIS - Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services Update
CONECT - Congregations Organized for a New Connecticut
How often do you get to attend a multi-racial
meeting with a whopping 648 people of
many faiths, all ages and from congregations
both urban and suburban? 18 members of
Congregation Mishkan Israel did just that when
they trooped down to Congregation B’nai Israel
in Bridgeport on January 28 to the Winter
Action Assembly of CONECT (Congregations
Organizing for A New Connecticut), where CMI
was formally recognized and welcomed to the
organization. (CONECT is a multi-faith, multi-racial
and ethnically diverse organization comprised
of 26 congregations whose purpose is to bring a
collective moral and religious voice to issues of
social and economic justice in our state.)
The agenda of the Assembly’s was to report
on CONECT’s work in 2015, kick off the new
year and to take action with public officials on
issues of gun violence, police reform, school

funding. Governor Malloy, Bridgeport Mayor
Ganim, Commissioner Dora Schriro of the State
Department of Emergency Services and Public
Protection attended in person, and Senator Chris
Murphy sent a video message addressing the key
role CONECT has played in fighting gun violence.
The evening also included election of the 2016
CONECT Strategy Team. CMI has already taken
a leadership position, with the selection of Karen
Baar to be part of that team.
The evening was an exciting way to launch CMI’s
membership in CONECT. We urge others to
join us as we develop our CONECT core team,
shape our involvement, and choose the issues
of greatest concern to us in the coming year.
Please contact Karen Baar at baarkaren257@
comcast.net for more information or to join our
email list. Stay tuned to the weekly CMI email for
our next meeting date.

The Brotherhood of Men and Women is grateful to
Jeffrey Sonnenfeld for presenting at our Presidential
Primary Special Table Talk on February 7th. We are
so fortunate to have Jeff and Clarky and family in our
CMI community. And if you watch the talking heads
on TV this political season, or catch a blast from
Donald Trump, look and listen for Jeff; he’s often a
rare voice of sanity in that discourse. Thanks Jeff!
The BMW is putting together its new board for
the 2016/2017 year. This is a perfect time, then,
to ask for names of anyone (even yourself!) who
might enjoy participating more closely with the
Brotherhood of Men and Women. The BMW
board meets 9 times a year to plan and put into
place programs that enhance the congregational
community. We welcome your support! Please
contact our Nominating Co-Chairs, John Keegan
at [email protected] or Jon Alderman at jon.
[email protected], for more information.
Parents and students looking ahead to the summer
should be aware of the BMW’s Greta Puklin
Scholarship. The purpose of the scholarship is to
provide financial assistance to an eligible child of
Congregation Mishkan Israel whose desire is to
attend a Jewish leadership camp. Greta Puklin was
a longtime assistant to Rabbi Robert Goldberg;
awarding this scholarship to an aspiring student
of leadership honors both their memories. Please
contact me for more information.
And this just in! Our biggest and tastiest event of
the year will be the 11th Annual Comedy Deli Night.
Note that we are moving to a June date this year,
Saturday June 4th. I’ll reveal the musical and comedy acts next month as well as plans for a possible
mini-wine tasting to start off the evening!
Until then,
Shalom

Israeli jewelry designer, Yael Avraham, is returning
to CMI for another Spring Show!! If you missed
it last year, this is your chance to meet the artist
behind the stunning pieces. She is so much fun and
very knowledgeable about the materials she
chooses. She’ll be joining us in the rotunda on
Sunday, April 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Light refreshments will be served.

President’s Message continued from page 4
committees working with the appropriate department
head to develop department level budgets – general
operations, facilities operations and maintenance,
cemetery, religious education, nursery school/day
care. Presentations are made by the department
heads to the Executive Committee. Out of those
discussions comes an initial budget document
for the Board to review. Then questions and
suggestions move back and forth between the
Board and the staff as numbers are crunched to
produce a final document. That document is then
sent out to you by early May, a month ahead of the
annual meeting, for your information. The Budget
goes into effect July 1, the beginning of our fiscal
year. Every effort is made to ensure we account
for all expenses, ensure we are staffed properly for
the work that needs to be done, pay our employees
fairly, and keep our dues and fees as reasonable
as possible. It is a very difficult balancing act and
one the Board takes very seriously. This year a
Development Committee was named, something
we have not had in a number of years. Their focus
will be to help develop opportunities for more
successful fundraising. As that effort brings more
positive results, it will help us to meet our financial
responsibility to ensure all program needs are met
and achieve a balanced budget.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS
Michelle Goldstein
Religious School Director
Often we are surrounded by negative news stories and concerns about the current
state of the world. The issues discussed are worrisome, often horrifying and
sometimes very confusing. It is without question why we might be concerned about
our future. That is, unless you have the privilege of being in my position. I worry little
about the future because I have the joy of being inspired by it. Our students and
our madrichim are simply incredible human beings! They have a passion for others
showing empathy and understanding, a recognition of the importance of Tikkun
Olam and dreams that define what it means to be the changers and doers of the world. In January, I led
a program on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and each student took a turn reading part of his “I Have a Dream
Speech.” In response, we wrote our own and I share it with you now. The future to me looks so much
brighter because their dreams have the ability to make all the difference!
I Have A Dream
Based on the speech by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Written by: CMI Religious School’s 4th-7th graders
I have a dream that everyone can work with anyone without
complaint and that when problems arise we do our best to fix
them. That we realize that no one can or is perfect. I have a
dream today.
I have a dream where one day our world will be clean,
where all the scars created by war and fear will have fresh
skin and where our world may be able to breathe fresh,
non polluted air into the lungs of our communities. I have a
dream today.
I have a dream that everyone will have a good education.
And everyone will have freedom of religion, everywhere. I
have a dream today.
I have a dream that people can emigrate from Syria to be
safe. I have a dream today.
I have a dream that there will be no racism or antiSemitism. I have a dream today.
I have a dream that solar power will be used world wide to
prevent global warming. I have a dream today.
I have a dream that life won’t be overcome with war and
fighting. I have a dream today.
I have a dream that kids can feel safe in school and not be
bullied. I have a dream today.
I have a dream that cancer is going to be cured. I have a
dream today.
I have a dream that there will be peace through all the
world and conflicts will be resolved. I have a dream today.
I have a dream that all people will be able to determine
their dream and fulfill it. That the world will be a better place
for future generations and that we can begin to make the
difference.We have a dream today.
I have a dream that people will not smoke. Also guns will be
used for good and believe in good. I have a dream today.
I have a dream that there will be no homeless people and
peace around the world. I have a dream today.
I have a dream that people of all ages, religions, sizes and
shapes will join together and sing. Where all children are
equal to play together as friends, everyone. None of this
bullying business. No name calling or punching or biting.
All having a wonderful time together. I have a dream today.
I have a dream that people will have enough food. That
people will have all the things they need in life. I have a
dream today.
I have a dream that no one will be poor, no one homeless,
no one hungry. I have a dream today.
I have a dream that one day, very soon, we will not need
police or law enforcers because there will be no crime,
scams or anything of the sort. I have a dream today.
I have a dream that the Earth will one day be as we
found it. It will be clean and healthy. People will not kill
unnecessarily. I have a dream today.
10
I have a dream that all men and women will be treated as
equals and harassment will end about what the opposite
gender can or can’t do. I have a dream today.

Early Childhood Director
Now that March has arrived, we
are hopefully seeing the last of
winter!
We have had a lot of fun playing
in the snow, but if I can speak
for everyone- we are all ready for warmer weather!
We are beginning our spring enrichment sessionswe will be offering Happy Feet, Shining Stars and
Bricks 4 Kidz.
Our Shining Stars class ends with a little theatrical
production, so keep your eyes open for the dates. It
is really fun to watch the children act out a story.
Our Scholastic Book Fair is Monday, March 14Friday, March 18.
Book Fair hours are between 8 a.m- 9:30 a.m,
12:30p.m.-1:30p.m, and 4p.m-5:15 p.m.
Please feel free to come visit us. If you would like to
come during different hours, just give us a call and
we’ll be happy to accommodate you.
comfort and security. Now the Connecticut Coalition to End Homelessness will partner with Paddington to launch Be Homeful, a campaign to end
homelessness before it begins.
Kids around Connecticut are joining Paddington
and the be homeful project in making a difference
in the lives of children in our state. You can do
your part to make sure a child like you can stay
in the comfort of home this year. It’s easy--- simply empty out a marmalade jar, decorate it with
pictures that remind you of home, and hang a be
homeful tag around the neck. Then try to be clever
like Paddington and figure out how you can fill
your jar with change.
school news
NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS
We will be giving out be homeful tags, and asking our families to share Paddington’s story with
their children, and work together to fill a jar with
change.
Please join us in this project to end homelessness
before it begins.
Our Tzedakah project for March is called:
The “Be Homeful” Project
The mission of be homeful is to end family
homelessness, one family at a time. Our vision is
a country where resources exist to keep families
out of shelter and in actual homes. Our goal is to
raise awareness and funds to give families and
businesses tools to help neighbors in need.
The Connecticut Coalition to End Homelessness is
proud to bring you be homeful, a bold and innovative
project designed to help Americans stamp out family
homelessness for good. We understand that the
most effective way to end homelessness is to never
let it begin in the first place. Now we need your help
spreading the word.
Once upon a time...
A small bear traveled all the way to England in
search of a new home. When he arrived at his
destination, he had almost nothing to his name only a suitcase containing an almost empty jar of
marmalade and a label round his neck with the

last long --- he quickly met the Brown family in

across America struggle to find this same sense of

PE’AH GARDEN
The Mitzvah of Feeding the Hungry
Love to garden but don’t
have a bright sunny space in
your own yard? Don’t have
time to commit to a garden
plot but still want to help
feed the hungry? The Pe’ah
Garden (located near the
upper parking lot) is looking
for new gardeners this year!
If you’re nervous about the
time commitment, consider
teaming up with another couple or family or one of
our existing experienced gardeners. First, we study
the Jewish sources from which the idea of Pe’ah,
leaving the corners (Pe’ah) of the field for the poor
and the strangers, comes from. Each gardener is
then given a plot. We ask you to plant half of that
plot with produce we’ll donate to local food pantries
and soup kitchens (we’ll provide the seedlings) and
the other half you can plant for your own use. If
you’re not interested in gardening we also need
volunteers willing to take our harvests from the
temple to a local soup kitchen once per week for
the summer months (we can work around summer
vacations!). If you want to help we’ll find a job for
you. Planting will happen in April-May and the
garden closes for the year in Oct-Nov. Last year’s
gardeners donated over 2,500 pounds of beautiful
organic produce!

To all of our Customers, Members, Friends, and Family,
The Helping Hands Community Thrift Store & Furniture Bank has
helped people in need across Connecticut since 2010, including
people with disabilities, transitioning from homelessness or
military service or displaced by fire. Now we are hoping for a
helping hand in return from the community after fire wiped
through its West Haven warehouse.
Early in the morning on August 10th we had a destructive fire in
our West Haven warehouse. The majority of our inventory was
destroyed. This is not only a devastating loss to us, but also to
the families we help in the charities we raise money for.
We need your help. We need your donations. We need furniture,
clothing, knick knacks, and housewares. Anything that you could
donate we need.
Your donations are tax deductible and you can choose what
charity you would like to your donation to benefit.
Members, please ask your donors and supporters to make
donations to help out. Donors and shoppers please go through
your gently used items and see if you have anything you can
spare. Please tell your friends and family that we need your help.
We need to restock so we can continue to help people in need.
