IWRM – NEIAFU, VAVA’U COMMUNITY DRIVING THE WHEEL *TITTLE: Improvement and Sustainable Management of Neiafu’s Aquifer *OBJECTIVE: Sustainable water resource assessment and protection of the fragile Neiafu Groundwater Resources *PURPOSE: Improve understanding of quality and quantity of water resources *POPULATION: app. 6000 *NUMBER OF HOUSEHOLDS: 1000 and less *NUMBER OF COMMUNITIES: 3 Communities *MAIN WATER RESOURCES: rain water, ground waters COMMUNITY STORY Awareness Building * Build Trust between the PMU and the Communities * Including Youths Congress to participate in households’ surveys •High Schools Participation – Poster Competition •Consultation Meetings with the Communities where people: A. Identified expected outcomes COMMUNITY WORKSHOP 1.Falaleu & Fungamisi 2.Talau 3.Kameli RAISING ISSUES: •CONCERN WITH THE FUTURE OF THE AQUIFER DUE TO NO SEWAGE DISPOSAL SITE, NO SLUDGE TRUCK •WATER SUPPLIES IN VARIOUS AREAS OF NEIAFU: -NEED TO UPGRADE -NEED TREATMENTS (MORE OFTEN) ON RAIN WATER COLLECTION TANKS IN HOUSEHOLDS IWRM ADDRESS THE CONCERNS • PROVIDE: ‐ SLUDGE TRUCK ‐ SLUDGE BEDS CONSTRUCTED FOR NEIAFU • PLANNING TO WORK ON IMPROVING WATER COLLECTION TANKS ON HOUSEHOLDS • PERSUADE COMMUNITIES OF THE SIGNIFICANT OF OWNING THEIR STREET • COMMUNITY ARE PERSUADING THAT THEY HAVE THE POWER TO MANAGE SUSTAINABLY
