THE CITY OF WINTER GARDEN NEWS
The City of Winter Garden News Summer 2012 www.wintergarden-fl.gov A NEW Partnership is Formed to Create Economic Opportunities The Cities of Apopka, Ocoee and Winter Garden have put pen to paper and forged a new alliance, hoping to turn their locations along the SR 429 corridor into economic opportunities and political clout. This new partnership will represent approximately 120,000 residents and over 60,000 employees giving the partnership parity with the largest cities, communities, downtowns and business districts in the Metropolitan area. 2 All three cities have the SR 429 corridor, Lake Apopka, the West Orange Trail, the Florida Central Railroad and a historical agricultural base in common. They also share agricultural distribution, manufacturing, wellness and digital media industries forming a common economic bond. By marshalling resources and clout, and honing in on one economic development strategy, the cities believe they can be more competitive with other communities and areas in Central Florida. “We’re true sister cities in many ways. In the end, what helps one should benefit all.” Richard Anderson, Apopka Chief Administrative Officer “It makes a lot of sense for us to work together. We’ll be able to marshal resources for our primary focus, which will be economic development along the SR 429 corridor. It’s such a great opportunity.” Mike Bollhoefer, Winter Garden City Manager “In the end, the Center Florida region benefits from partnerships like this. The more we work together and align resources, the better for all of us.” Robert Frank, Ocoee City Manager Table of Contents 2 A New Partnership is Formed to Create Economic Opportunities 4 Keep Our Garden Green 6 Our Water 7 Winter Garden Heritage Foundation 8 Garden Theatre 10 Special Events IMPORTANT NUMBERS Mayor John Rees 407.656.7372 Commissioners: District 1, H. Bring a reusable water bottle and a reusable shopping bag. • Paper weight. Reduce paper weight by downloading books, articles, maps, etc., on an electronic device and leaving the hard copies behind. • Pre-trip recycling. Remove packaging materials from new items and recycle those materials before you leave. Keep Our Garden (and Other Gardens) 27 4 GREEN Leaving the House Unplug your computer, television, microwave, etc. All these items draw power even when switched off. Adjust the thermostat, turn down the heat in the winter and turn up or shut off the air conditioner in the summer. Turn down the water heater so it doesn’t unnecessarily heat water while you’re away. Lodging, Transportation & Food It’s that time of year when many folks will be going on vacation. If you haven’t planned your trip yet, consider ecotourism. • Opt out of daily laundering of towels and linens. Request that towels are replaced only when left on the floor and linens that are replaced only upon request. “Responsible ecotourism includes programs that minimize the negative • Use public transportation, walk or bike instead of driving. aspects of conventional tourism on the environment and enhances the cultural integrity of local people. Water supply and waste management services are often much more limited than Western travelers are accustomed to. Use only what you need. • Ask the tourist office or hotel staff how to recycle in the area you’re visiting. Because our drinking water comes from the aquifer, protecting and conserving this invaluable natural resource is at the heart of the City’s efforts. These efforts include expanding the City’s reclaim water services, incorporating new metering technology and educating consumers through the water conservation program. Communities that currently use reclaim/reuse water for irrigation include Chapin Station, Fuller’s Landing, Fuller’s Crossing, Trails of Winter Garden, Covington Chase, Courtlea Park, Oak Glen, Deerfield Place, Cobblestone, Daniels Landing, Regency Oaks, Grove Park, Foxcrest, Grovehurst, Glenwood, Black Lake Park, Britt Business Park and the Winter Garden Village. Reclaim service is expected to start this year in Belle Meade, Bronson’s Landing, Carriage Point and portions of Stoneybrook West. Installation of new metering technology in select communities will also begin this year. This new technology allows for efficient monitoring of water leaks and customer water use through an increase in meter reading frequency. Customers will have the ability to view their water use on weekly, daily and even hourly bases, which will improve management of water consumption. The water conservation program hosts workshops and attends festivals throughout the year to educate the public on Florida Friendly Landscaping™, efficient irrigation and plant choices. Free evaluations are available for all customers to identify ways to conserve water outdoors. A free showerhead exchange, which offers water-saving fixtures, is also available to help reduce indoor water use. Enforcement of the City’s irrigation ordinance is another tool used to educate customers about water conservation. Conservation is vital to protecting natural resources and imperative to delaying and hopefully preventing the need to look at alternative water sources like lakes and rivers for drinking water, which can have severe environmental impacts. For additional information, please visit the City’s water conservation webpage at www.cwgdn.com/cityhall/departments/water-conservation or call 407.654.2732. Thank you to all our customers who conserve water!
