President’s Column
Greetings.
Another NAPE, Valentine’s Day, President’s Day, and Mardi
Gras have come and gone by the Wednesday, February 18, luncheon meeting. Tim Rynott, Ridge Resources, LLC, will be the
speaker. His topic, “Onshore Louisiana Tertiary and Cretaceous:
Status and Overview” will inform us that “Recent Tertiary and
Cretaceous successes have once again proven that Louisiana is
still alive and well for the explorer willing to take the risk.”
Mark your calendars for the March 3 social at Deano’s Pizza on
Bertand. This is an opportunity to meet the students who will enter into the professional world. Tim Bennett has scheduled the
LGS golf tournament for October 16, 2015. Make plans to put
together your teams.
It is time to nominate and to elect offiers and one director for the
2015–2016 LGS Board. Bill Finley will serve as President.
Nominations and candidate bios are due by April 1 and ballots
will be sent out by May 1.
Also, nominations for the AAPG House o Delegates are open to
current AAPG members. We are represented by two delegates,
Travis Helms and King Munson. King will stand for re-election
to the next three year term, 2015–2018. The new term begins July 1, 2015. If anyone wishes to stand for election contact me. I
need to forward the Delegate nominees to AAPG headquarters by
March 2, 2015. AAPG will vet all candidates and conduct the
election. The results will be sent to me by June 30.
See you at the luncheon.

FEBRUARY LUNCHEON PRESENTATION
Onshore Louisiana Tertiary and Cretaceous:
Status and Overview
Tim Rynott
Ridge Resources, LLC
Abstract
While drilling traditional Wilcox and Cretaceous structures has
recently waned, the downdip Yegua, Wilcox, and deep Cretaceous formations have wind in their sails in an otherwise dead
sea. None of us are completely immune to the current down cycle, but while the resource players are pummeled daily in the
press, several savvy South Louisiana explorers are going about
their business taking risks, and finding hydrocarbons.
For example, Freeport-McMoRan Oil and Gas (FM O&G)
North Lomond discovery well (St. Martin Parish) recently tested
multiple Cretaceous sands at 43 MMCFGD, with 11,800# FTP.
FM O&G found 150 ft of net Cretaceous pay at depths of 24,000–
29,000 ft on a subsalt structure which seismic suggests could encompass ~21,000 ac. (You do the math.) In addition, this well
encountered two thick, productive, slope-deposited Wilcox sands
with possible lateral extent exceeding 15,000 ac.
Southwest of this discovery, Chevron and FM O&G have quietly proved up substantial reserves in high quality Yegua sands at
depths of 23,000–24,000 ft. The published 3P reserves are 547
BCFE, and the initial well is yet to be completed. Chevron’s second analog well, Farthest Gate West Project, is close to reaching
its 24,000 foot PTD, and will test multiple Paleogene objectives.
Although not as glamorous as the aforementioned successes,
several small and mid-sized operators have achieved a modicum
level of success in the Central Louisiana Wilcox (Lower Tertiary)
trend. Over 16 MMBO and 90 BCFG have been discovered in
PAGE 4
this trend since 2004, with fracture technology providing a critical role. Even though drillers have been targeting the Wilcox
since the 1940s, they are STILL on a steep learning curve. Summarizing (personal) key elements to this steep curve:
1) Proximal water legs can be highly detrimental; therefore,
structure matters. Even the tight Wilcox is not a traditional resource play.
2) Maximize petrophysical evaluations on the first well. Clay
analysis is critical for proper completion techniques and understanding the mineral compositions aids accurate water saturation
calculations.
3) Oil based mud is recommended for abnormally pressured
and/or shaly intervals, while water based muds can be economically very beneficial for smaller projects. Water based mud is
more effective in sandier sections, and requires slow, controlled
drilling through the objective section.
4) Generally speaking, avoid completing sands with less than
12% porosity.
5) Form large pre-drill units with large sand definitions.
6) Micrologs and experienced mudloggers provide the best
bang for your buck during the evaluation stage.
After 114 years and 220,000 wells, the great Oil and Gas state
of Louisiana is quite far from depleting its vast mineral resources.
Recent Tertiary and Cretaceous successes have once again proven
that Louisiana is still alive and well for the explorers who are
willing to take the risk.
