November/December - Lafayette Chamber of Commerce
NOV/DEC 2011
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Newsletter
Creating a strong local economy • Promoting the community • Providing networking opportunities • Representing the interests of business with government
Try Lafayette First –
Home for the Holidays
So what is the headline going to be this year? “3% increase in Holiday Sales
For Local Merchants This Year” or “The Grinch Stole Christmas Again?”
But with high unemployment, fears of another recession, and a weak housing market it is wise to be cautious. Either way, we are in for a rough ride this
holiday season. By continuing the TRY LAFAYETTE FIRST campaign the
chamber’s goal is to generate bottom line sales of Lafayette merchants during
the holidays through a high profile concentrated effort. We will continue to
educate and motivate residents to “shop local.”
We have not decided on what stunt to pull this year. Last year we closed
the freeway entrance to 24. Why leave Lafayette and go to Walnut Creek
when you can support your own community? We’ll land a spaceship on Mt.
Diablo Blvd. or hire clowns to roam the downtown, or something. Just let
your customers know how important it is to shop local. Keep the money in
our community, create local jobs, help the environment, increase local sales
tax, and help support our local merchants.
Business Person of the Year –
Save the Date
Please mark your calendar for Friday, January 20, 2012 for the annual Chamber dinner. Hear from our new Mayor Carol Federighi as she gives her
“State of the City Address”, welcome the chamber’s new Board of Directors
and celebrate with our 2012 Business Person of the Year. Lafayette Park
Hotel & Spa is the place. You can find a ballot in the newsletter. Please
nominate someone you feel is deserving of such an honor.
Business Expo 2011
The chamber is proud to partner with the Hispanic, Pleasant Hill, Concord
and Martinez Chambers for the annual Business Expo, set for Thursday,
November 3, 4:00-7:00pm at the Crown Plaza Hotel, 45 John Glenn Dr.,
Concord. A great place to meet, network or better yet share your business
with hundreds of visitors. There may be a space left for you. Call Barbara
at 925-284-7404 for details.
32nd Annual Community
Thanksgiving Breakfast
Join the business community, residents and city leaders on Friday, 7:00am
–8:30am November 18, 2011 at Lafayette Orinda Presbyterian Church, 49
Knox Dr., Lafayette. Registration form can be found inserted in this newsletter or visit www.lafayettechamber.org. This year’s guest speaker is Congressman George Miller. Music will be provided by local harpist Wendy Tamis.
Spring Loaf Catering will provide breakfast. It is that last chance to visit with
your friends in the community before you get swept up in Holiday Madness.
Stay Home for the Holidays
Support our local merchants!
Our New Board of Directors
Congratulations to our newly elected board members!
Diane Azaro-Barbera - California Bank of Commerce
Brian Aiello - 72 West/ Pinnacle Promotions
Steve Richard - Sustainable Lafayette
They are joining returning members:
Budd MacKenzie - Trust in Education
Polly Bernson - Diablo Rapid Print
Leila Douglah - Douglah Designs

Wendy Tamis - Clocks, Etc.
President-elect - Caesar Perales, CPA
The slate will be ratified at the
November Board Meeting.
A thank you to our Sponsors
and Volunteers of the annual Reservoir Run
We begin with a big hand for Oakwood Athletic Club who joins us each year as our presenting sponsor. A
special thank you goes out to Bob Athyde and the Stanley School Music Department and Generations in
Jazz. Whole Foods is this year’s Awards Sponsor. Support also comes from Sports Basement, EBMUD,
Contra Costa Times, 92.1 KKDV, Allegro Copy & Print, Minuteman Press of Lafayette, Love Bugs,
Bowles & Verna LLP, Lafayette Physical Therapy, Lafayette Health Club, Peacock Construction 72
West/ Pinacle Promotion, Beyond Chiropractic, BMW Concord, Contra Costa Veterinary Emergency
Center, and the Shops at Plaza Center. Amazing weather and dozens of volunteers to thank including
Dr. Jerri Behymer, LPIE, the schools’ PTA representatives, Opportunity Knocks, Debbie Swaggart, Gary
Morris, Kevin Healey, Lafayette Juniors and Whole Foods.
Gorilla Marketing
One Gorilla, 80 lbs. of bananas, 71 participants, one wacky business owner that call himself the “chief boot licker” and dozens of
crazy ways to promote your business were shared on September 23rd,
when the chamber put on its 1st “Outrageous Marketing Workshops.” Look for our next segment in February.
Measure G - Fix Our Roads
Measure G goes to the voters in Lafayette on Tuesday, November
8. The $89 Annual Parcel Tax will help repair the remaining failed
roads in town. The tax will run for 10 years or less if the all the
roads are repaired. Your Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors votes to support this measure. With this measure, the city
will pay as it goes. An additional $3million will be drawn down
from the city’s reserve to cover the remainder of the cost. This measure is also supported by the Lafayette Taxpayer’s Association, The
League of Women voters of Diablo Valley and the Acalanes Valley
Homeowner’s Association.
Holiday Lights
Nothing like a nip in the air, a comfortable sweater, and reusable
shopping bags in your hands as you make your way through downtown Lafayette on your annual Holiday Shopping Trip. But wait,
something is wrong. It’s dark out here. What happened to the
Holiday Twinkle Lights?
This could be a true story if we don’t act now. In order to
make necessary reductions in the city’s budget, the City Council
approved the elimination of funding for the lights this year. What
can we do about it? We would invite you to join other downtown
businesses and make a donation to help keep the city bright. We
need to raise about $8,000 by November 15th to keep the lights
on and maintained. Simply send a check to the Lafayette Chamber
of Commerce for any amount and we’ll work with the city to keep
the lights on. Oh, we’ll take credit cards too! Happy Holidays and
TRY LAFAYETTE FIRST.

The nonprofit, nonpartisan CA Fwd was launched in
2008, after five foundations realized the only way to
tackle the state government dysfunction was to create
an organization to help reshape the future of the state
by fundamentally changing the way government operates. Our mission is to work with Californians to help
create a “smart” government— one that’s small enough
to listen, big enough to tackle real problems, smart
enough to spend our money wisely in good times and
bad, and honest enough to be held accountable for
results. Like us on Facebook: cafwd.org/facebook. Or,

Downtown Strategic Plan
City Staff has prepared the 3rd draft of the DSP which will be reviewed at the Planning Commission Meeting on Monday, November 7. The Revised Draft Downtown Specific Plan (DSP) builds on
the Lafayette General Plan and other policy documents to provide
a detailed land use and design framework to guide private development and public investment in the downtown. The DSP was developed through a five-year process designed to maximize public input
and participation. The DSP articulates a vision to preserve and enhance the small town character while guiding change that will occur
over the next 20 years.
The Planning Commission will begin its review of this draft
document in November 2011. After the Commission has completed its review, it will submit recommendations to the City Council.
The City Council will take final action on the DSP. The Planning
Commission will hold additional hearings on November 21 and
December 5. If you have questions or comments on the DSP, please
contact Niroop K. Srivatsa, [email protected], (925)-2993206 or Ann Merideth, [email protected], (925)-2993218. To review the October 2011 draft visit the Cities website;
www.ci.lafatyette.ca.us
In October, The Planning Commission and the Circulation Commission had a joint meeting to begin discussions on a proposed 315
unit Apartment Complex that would be built on the open space
located at Deer Hill Rd. and Pleasant Hill Rd. This was the site
of a quarry during the construction of Highway 24. Currently the
zoning allows for 34 units per acre although there is current discussions that would down-zone the property to 1 unit per 5 acres. The
application for this project was deemed complete and the process
has begun. At the joint meeting 27 residents took their turn during public comment and asked the city not to approve the project.
More to come…
The mixed use development including 72 assisted living apartments, a 16-bed memory care facility and 6,000 ft. of retail is moving forward. This project is planned for the vacant property at 2nd
St. and Mt. Diablo Blvd.
Lafayette Streetscape Project
City Staff will go out to bid again this winter for the project that
would include new sidewalks, gutters and landscaping between
Mountain View and Lafayette Circle. Bids came in too high this
past summer and the city decided to hold off. This project is financed mostly from a state grant.
Downtown Historical District
Representatives from City Council, Planning Commission, City
Staff, owners of the Lafayette Park Theatre, and the buildings from
The Squirrels to Way Side Inn all gathered for eight meetings to try
and come up with a compromise to lower the parking required in
the area. The city may go forward with establishing a special overlay
district, but at this time, there was no agreements made by the city
and the property owners.

Don’t Miss Your Chance! Update your business info for the 2012-2013 Chamber Directory!
It is that time again when we start to prepare the 2012-2013 Business and Community Directory. This popular directory
is delivered to every home in Lafayette. In addition to information on our Lafayette community, we list our
Chamber member businesses twice – in the category listings and the alphabetical listings. There are
opportunities for advertising – from business size ads to full page ads in black and white and color – more information on
advertising to follow. Are you using social media? We’d like to know.
In order to make the directory as accurate as possible, each Chamber member will be receiving a letter asking them to
review their current listing in the Chamber website’s Member Directory - http://lafayettechamber.org/members/memberdirectory/. Be ahead of the game and check your listing out today and let us know of any changes. If your business name
is underlined – click on it and it will take you to your website – do we have the correct link? If you business name is NOT
underlined, then we do not have a website link for you – do you not have a website address? Do
we have the email address correct for your business? To check click on the underlined “Request
Info” next to the envelope icon. (See enclosed flyer to advise us of corrections and additions to
your listing.)
You can also update your business’ listing on the Chamber website by adding up to 25
words that describe your business and let people know what makes your business special.
This description will be put in the “About us…” portion of the listing. If you have any questions regarding our upcoming directory please contact Linda Carlson or Barbara Gilmore at
284-7404. To look at the 2010-2011 Lafayette Chamber Business & Community Directory go
to the Chamber website – www.lafayette.org, click on the “Contact Us” tab from the Home
page, click on “Relocation Information” on the Contact Us page and then click on “Lafayette
