SAINTS PETER AND PAUL,
APOSTLES
June 28, 2015
St. Peter, originally known as
Simon, was the son of a man
named John, and his brother’s
name was Andrew. We also
know that he was married, since
Jesus cured his mother-in-law
at the family home at Bethsaida in Gallilee. A fisherman
by trade, Jesus was to call Peter, along with his brother
Andrew and James and John, to leave everything behind
to become His followers. He said to them “Come after
me, and I will make you fishers of men”.
It is because of Peter’s confession of faith in Jesus as
Messiah that Jesus gave him the nickname of “rock” and
stated that it was upon the rock of Peter’s faith that the
Church would rise. All the Gospel writers list Peter first
when naming the apostles of Jesus, and there is no doubt
that Peter was the “first among equals” in the minds of
the earliest Christians. In the Gospels, Peter
demonstrates that his faith is imperfect. He denies that
Jesus’ coming death should ever be allowed to happen,
tells Jesus at the last supper that He will never wash his
feet, and denies association with Jesus three times, even
after Jesus predicted that he would. St. Peter can show us
how difficult discipleship can truly be, but is also an
example of the Lord choosing the weak and making
them strong in bearing witness to Him.
Peter was crucified upside down on a cross for the
Faith in the year 64 in Rome, the city he served as its
first bishop. His successors in that office, who exercise
the ministry of Bishop of Rome to this day, are known
by the title of “Pope.”
St. Paul’s background and journey of faith is
somewhat different from St. Peter’s. Paul, who was
originally known as Saul, was an educated Jew and a
member of the Pharisee party, as well as being a Roman
citizen. He first appears in the pages of Scripture in Acts
7:58, as being present at the martyrdom of St. Stephen,
the first of Jesus’ followers to be put to death because of
his faith in Jesus. Saul persecuted the Christians
savagely, but was dramatically converted to the very
One he had been persecuting after seeing Jesus in a
vision. From that time on, Saul, who was now known as
Paul, poured the same energy with which he persecuted
Christ’s followers into bringing the Gospel of Jesus to as
many people as he could.
Peter and Paul represent two different approaches to
discipleship. Peter had to learn slowly, make many
mistakes along the way, but always experienced the
compassionate forgiveness and encouragement of Jesus.
Paul, on the other hand, came to the Faith immediately
and never backed away from his zeal for Christ after
that.
.
This weekend we celebrate our
Patronal Feast of St Peter. We also
celebrate the 6th year anniversary of
St Peter at the Lake Center. The
building became a reality because of
the hard work and great stewardship of
all those that live here year round, that come here to
visit, and some who maintain a house seasonally. We
give you Thanks.
Our late Pastor Fr. Don Parson had a vision that
was shared by many. We originally had some skeptics
but once it was realized they forged ahead. Today many
guests come to share weekend liturgies with all of us.
We have a wonderful place that is appropriated titled
“our parish away from home.”
We as a parish continue to make both our
locations a welcoming place for all.
The St. Peter Youth Group will be
going on a camping trip to Swallow
Falls. Leaving June 29th, from the
parish parking lot at 2:45 pm and
returning on July 1st, at 12:30 pm to
the church parking lot. The
Mountain Maryland Youth Group camp out is for middle
and high school students. The cost for the campers is
$15 and chaperones are free. Come and join us for Faith,
Fun, Food and Friends.

Saint Paul says we should “put on” virtue; we should
wear compassion, kindness,
patience, gentleness-colorful and
obvious as our outfits. Paul wants us
to wear our allegiance to Christ-“on
our sleeves” if you will- not as a
boast like Gucci or Prada logo, but
as a simple, humble sign this woman, this man, this child
belongs to Christ, and you will know it because you can
see that she or he is dressed in love.
Help the CDA help the House of Hope? It's MAC ‘N
CHEESE MONTH! Bring in your donations and put
them in the boxes provided at the church and the center!
PARISH REGISTRATION – Many believe that if
you are born and raised in a parish, that you are
automatically registered. This is NOT the case. If
you are 18 years or older and attending our parish you
should register. Membership is maintained by registration,
active participation in the weekend liturgies,
stewardship/envelope use and support /participation in
ministries of the parish. Registered parishioners receive all
parish mailings and being registered makes it easier when
it is time to be a sponsor for baptism, confirmation or
RCIA. Parishes require a form confirming registered
and active parish membership for someone to be a
godparent or confirmation sponsor. Registration is our
only means of certifying you as a member of our parish.
New Parishioner packets are near the doors of the church
and the center.
