ZARKORA: THE LOST KINGDOM
by Nicholas and Alison Lochel
Review by ANASTASIA ARTO, 11
This is a wonderful fantasy adventure book where the
two main characters Neleik and Ervine try and save
their kidnapped sister. Throughout their adventures
they face many dangerous characters such as dragons
and giants. They also meet a few friends that will help
them on the way. This book, being the second in the
series, made me want to read the other book because
this one was really good. I think this book really
shows how you have to help your family no matter
what. Anyone who likes fantasy or adventure books
will love Zarkora. Ages 9-14. Published by Hachette

THE BIG BOOK OF MR BADGER
by Leigh Hobbs
Review by CHRISTIAN ARTO, 9
I found this book funny, enjoyable and easy to read.
Mr Badger works at the Boubles Grand Hotel in
charge of special events. The book is made up of four
stories that continue on from each other. They are all
mysteries. One of the stories is about a girl called
Sylvia Smothers-Curruthers who has a seventh
birthday at the hotel and she throws a tantrum which
Mr Badger has to deal with. The other stories in the
book are about The Missing Ape, The Difficult
Duchess and The Magic Mirror. You’ll love this book if

THE ADVENTURES OF MISS
PETITFOUR
by Anne Michaels
Review by GIGI-ROSE ARTO, 6
I like this book because it was nice to read and it has
good pictures. The book Miss Petitfour is about a lady
using her picnic rug to fly, with her cats holding on as
well. She has 16 cats and they have nice names. The
names are Minky, Misty, Taffy, Purrsia, Pirate, Mustard,
Moutarde, Hemdela, Earring, Grigorovitch, Clasby,
Captain Captain, Captain Catkin, Captain Clothespin,
Your Shyness, Sizzles and they are all very different.
There are six different stories in this book, they are all
magical and fantastic. Some of the words are quite
tricky. Ages 7+. Published by Bloomsbury. RRP $19.99

THE CLEO STORIES:
A FRIEND AND A PET
by Libby Gleeson and Freya
Blackwood
Review by SOPHIA FIELDEN, 6
This book has two stories. The
first is Cleo Makes a Friend. It’s
raining outside and Cleo is
bored. She’s counting raindrops.
She doesn’t have any friends to play with
because they’re all busy. Her mum
wants her to clean her room but she
doesn’t want to. Cleo likes to dress up
and is wearing a giraffe costume. I’m
happy when Cleo finds a friend in the
mirror after using her imagination. In the
second story Cleo wants to find a pet.
Her friend Nick has just got a new puppy
and Cleo wants one but her parents say no. It feels like all of her
friends have pets except for her. She’s sad but then she has an
idea. She remembers the snails that were in the garden and puts
five of them in a box to keep as her pets. The pictures are really
nice in pencil and colours and I like the costumes that Cleo wears,
especially her cat burglar one. I think girls and boys would like this
book but mostly girls. Ages 5-8. Published by Allen&Unwin. RRP
$16.99
DANDELIONS
by Katrina McKelvey and
Kirrili Lonergan
Review by GRACIE
TOMLINSON, 5
This book is about a young
girl who loves dandelions. She
imagines all the magical
places dandelions go when
they are blown in the wind. I
liked this book because it’s
about a girl playing with her
dad. I enjoyed the parts
where she imagines where
the puffballs go, especially
when they are up in the sky with the hot air balloons. The
pictures are very colourful and like paintings. This book made me
feel a little sad at the start, when the girl wanted her dandelions
to grow, but happy at the end. I think young girls who love nature
and their dads would enjoy this book. Ages 4-8. Published by EK
Books. RRP $24.99
KIDGLOVZ
by Julie Hunt
Review by JESSICA MORRIS, 9
At first look this is not really a book I
would choose at a library or
bookshop as I prefer books about
cats or adventure, such as spirit
animals and Harry Potter. But I
would definitely recommend this
book for people who like reading
books with lots of pictures as the
illustrations are excellent though
they are in black and white which looks a bit sad. The characters
are interesting. I liked the dog Hugo the most who was KidGlovz’s
faithful companion through the book. It made me feel a little sad
because KidGlovz didn’t have enough food to eat or get enough
sleep. He lost three of his fingers and he was an orphan. I would
prefer a happier story but I’m glad I kept reading. I have now read
it four times. Ages 8-10. Published by Allen&Unwin. RRP $24.99

OUR LITTLEST DIGGER
anzac
Several young French and
Belgian orphans were
reportedly smuggled into
Australia by Diggers in 1919.
According to the Australian
War Memorial, an
11-year-old French boy
wandered into an Australian
camp on December 25,
1918.
Members of the Australian
Flying Corp were sitting
down to Christmas dinner
at Bickendorf, Germany,
when little Henri Heremene
wandered in. He had been
an orphan since 1914.
Henri’s father was killed in
the first week of the war
and his mother and sister
shortly after when the
Germans shelled his house.
For the duration of the war
he befriended a succession
of English units, travelling
across battlefields.
The Australian squadron
adopted Henri as their
“mascot”. They fed and
clothed him and he was
given a uniform. Henri
quickly became known as
“Little Digger”. In 1919, Air
Mechanic Private Tim
William Tovell smuggled
Henri across the English
Channel and back to
Australia in an oat sack.
Private Tovell adopted
Henri and he lived in
Queensland until his death
in a motorcyle accident in
1928.

Recipe
ANZAC BISCUITS
Anzac biscuits were sent to our soldiers on the Western Front because
they would last a long time out of the fridge. Back home they were sold
at local fairs and stalls to raise money for the troops.
Ingredients
• 1 cup rolled oats
• 1 cup plain flour
• 2⁄3 cup coconut
• 2⁄3 cup brown sugar
• 125g butter
• 2 tblsp golden syrup
• 2 tblsp cold water
• 1⁄2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
Method
Line three baking trays
with baking paper then
preheat oven to 160C.
Mix together oats, coconut, sugar and
flour in a large bowl. Chop butter and place
in a saucepan with golden syrup and water
then put on the stove over a medium heat.
Stir with a wooden spoon until butter has
melted. Stir in bicarb soda then add the saucepan
contents to the large bowl. Mix well.
Roll level tablespoons into balls then put on trays about 5cm apart. Flatten a little with
a fork. Cook for about 10 minutes or until a light gold colour. Leave for 5 minutes then
slide on to a wire rack to cool.
A SOLDIER, A DOG AND A BOY
by Libby Hathorn
A moving story, told completely in dialogue, about a
young Australian soldier in the battle of the Somme.
Walking through the fields away from the front, he
finds what he thinks is a stray dog and decides to
adopt it as a mascot for his company. Then he meets
Jacques, the homeless orphan boy who owns the
dog. The soldier realises that Jacques needs the
dog more — and perhaps needs his help as well.

WIDE OPEN SKY
An uplifting documentary
about a children’s choir in a
remote corner of outback
Australia. Out there, footy is
king and music education is as rare as rain. The children travel far from home
to music camp to prepare for a big concert in Coonamble, where they only
have three days to learn a demanding repertoire. While the choir means
something different to each of the primary-aged children, it matters a hell of a
lot to all of them. Moving and funny, the film reminds us why no child
anywhere should grow up without music. ENTERTAINMENT ONE. Rated G.
