Classification and Identification of Fossils Lab # 3 Classification and Taxonomy • Kingdom Animalia • Phylum Chordata • Class Mammalia • Order Carnivora • Family Felidae • Genus Felis • Species domestica Classification and Taxonomy • Developed by Linnaeus in the early 18Th century. • Species is the basic unit of the system. • It is a binomial (two parts) formal designation for each species. • Is composed by the capitalized name of the genus (plural-genera), followed by the uncapitalized name of the species (pluralspecies).
