Leap of Faith organizer Tina Gougeon poses beside a 2006 Porsche

‘n Shine held at the Morinville Legion Saturday in conjunction with the
cancer fundraiser. A total of $8,200 was raised from the event.
Local car enthusiasts assist
with local cancer fundraiser
by Lucie Roy with files from Morinville News
A Morinville woman turned adversity into hope with a fundraiser in
aid of the Alberta Cancer Foundation over the weekend. The Leap of
Faith Golf Tournament, Silent Auction and Show ‘n’ Shine took place
Aug. 16 at Terrae Pines Golf Course and the Morinville Royal Canadian Legion Branch 176. Although organizer Tina Gougeon had hoped
to raise $5,000 for the cause, local support ballooned that amoun t
to more than $8,200 when the numbers were tallied Saturday night.
Gougeon was diagnosed with breast cancer at the beginning
of February of this year, had her first surgery by the end of that
month, and has another scheduled for Aug. 27. Gougeon says her
prognosis is good – the chemo is working, the cancer shrinking.
Through her experiences battling the disease, Gougeon decided
she wanted to do something to assist others who are living with
cancer, and organized the fundraiser for the Cross Cancer Foundation.
Like many Albertans, cancer has touched both sides of her family. Her father died of cancer and four of her mother’s siblings have
passed from the disease. Other relatives have had and conquered
the illness.
Gougeon was overwhelmed by the local support in getting her
fundraiser off the ground and running. The Morinville Legion stepped
up to co-host the event and many local businesses stepped forward
to support it through prizes and promotions. Two of the major elements of the event were an accommodations package in Mexico or
Florida provided for the silent auction by Professional Realty, and a
$5,000 hole-in-one opportunity, sponsored by Linda Getzlaf of Re/
Max Realty.
Car club helps with important cause
The event included a four-ball / best-ball tournament and steak
dinner back at the Legion. A silent auction ran throughout the day
as well as a fundraising barbecue and show and shine, the latter
organized by the Morinville Redliners. Twenty-five vehicles were registered in the Show ‘n’ Shine, with many of the vehicles belonging to
members of the Morinville Redliners Car Club. Redliner co-founder
Ron Cust said the club has about 25 members from Morinville and
surrounding area and that the club has been in existence for about
18 months.
Cust said the Redliners will be partnering with Smith Music in
early September for an outdoor concert, show and shine, and car
cruise. He said part of the proceeds from that event will be donated
to cancer causes.

Editor:
The gentleman at the next table struck up a friendly conversation
with us and we felt very welcomed to your town. When we went to
pay we discovered that he had paid for us. What a great gesture.
That happens so rarely these days. We want to thank him and let
him know that he is a true ambassador for your town.
We will pay it forward!
On August 9 we went for breakfast at the Friends and Neighbours

Organizational review seeks more
efficiency for Town of Morinville
by Tristan Turner
using our resources correctly?” she said. “We’re going to evaluate
everything.”
However, Mayor Holmes was quick to clarify that the evaluation
doesn’t necessarily mean the creation of a list of programs or services to cut. “We’re not really sure at this point [if programs/services
will be cut], we’re keeping it open and everything is on the table,
but we’re not expecting that we’re going to receive a list back of
things that we need to cut. We’re going to receive ideas of how we
can be more efficient. It’s going to be things like policies that we’re
missing, and gaps in how we’re operating certain procedures and
policies that we have in place,” Holmes said, adding the Town’s snow
removal program could be one area that the organizational review
could look at for efficiencies.
While the initiative is Council led, Holmes said there would be
some public consultation through the process. However, no official
plans have been made for open houses or other public events as of
yet.
The mayor also explained that updates will provided to Council
throughout the next few months on the review already in progress.
She said residents would be given access to this information in press
releases and through Town social media channels.
Council has engaged Edmonton consulting firm Nichols Applied
Management to conduct an Organizational Effectiveness and Efficiency Review for the Town of Morinville and the services it offers.
The review was budgeted at $100,000 in the 2014 Budget, passed
last spring. It is expected the review will take the next four months
to complete.
In a release issued Friday, Mayor Lisa Holmes said Council sees
the organizational review as an “important step to effectively plan
for Morinville’s future” and that all of Council is “wholeheartedly”
behind the review. In the same release, Chief Administrative Officer Debbie Oyarzun said she believed the organizational review
“will provide an opportunity to identify ways to be innovative and
improve the delivery of quality public services, and the provision of
facilities and infrastructure in Morinville.”
During an interview, Mayor Holmes described the Council-led
endeavour as going through and evaluating service levels by taking
every single program or service that the Town of Morinville provides
to residents and businesses, and evaluating it. “Is it what we need?
Is it effective use of our time? Is it an efficient use of staff? Is it

Alberta PC leadership candidate and former
bank executive Jim Prentice spoke to Progressive
Conservative (PC) supporters, local councillors
and journalists Aug. 18
during a campaign stop at
the Morinville Community
Cultural Centre. Prentice
gave a speech in support
of his candidacy, identifying points in his platform
and his history as a federal
Cabinet minister. He also
responded to questions
from attendees.
Prentice spoke about the
need to make large investments in provincial infrastructure through deficit
financing, addressing the
deficit over five years,
and repaying the borrowing over an accelerated 15-year period. Included in these
infrastructure priorities was a planned $250
million investment in ensuring all continuing care facilities within the province meet
fire and safety codes, as well as a plan to
build more senior facilities than currently
planned. “We’re building about 800 units [in
senior facilities] every year,” he said. “That’s
a great government program. Problem is you
need 2,000 units a year just to keep pace
[with growing demand].” Other infrastructure plans include significant investments in
bridges, highways and new schools.
Prentice contrasted U.S. President Barrack Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009
(ARRA) with the Canadian government’s stimulus plan, arguing the
Conservatives focused
on investing in infrastructure while the US
program did not. “You
can’t find anything today
in the United States that
was built with fiscal crisis
dollars, and it’s been
one of the big criticisms
of President Obama
because they took the
money,” Prentice said,
adding state and municipal governments used
stimulus money to cover
their own deficits. “It
basically just got washed
through the government system and nobody
built anything.”
However, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation, billions of dollars
were spent on infrastructure projects, including $27.5 billion for highway and bridge
construction projects, $8 billion for intercity
passenger rail projects and many currently
completed stimulus supported projects,
including the new Robertson Bridge in Danville, Virginia.
If elected as PC leader, Prentice said one
of his priorities would be on what he sees as

the province’s infrastructure deficit. When asked if he would commit to building an overpass at the intersection of Cardiff Road and
Highway 2, the PC candidate said, “catching up on our highway infrastructure will be a priority for sure, but I can’t tell you where the
Cardiff overpass fits into the transportation plan.”
While Prentice may not be aware of where the government he
hopes to lead stands on transportation priorities, he vocally took
a stand against the entitlements that have shadowed the Alberta
government under Premier Alison Redford. He promised the Morinville audience an end to “entitlements” and “sweetheart contracts”
associated with the Redford government. “When I talk about the
end of entitlements, I’m not talking about our MLAs, and I’m not
even - for the most part - talking about our ministers,” he said. “I’m
talking about the relationship that exists between the person at the
top of the Government of Alberta and the citizens. People are saying
they’re disgusted and they want change. They’re going to see that
[change].”
Speaking about specific changes, Prentice said they need to
9
prohibit sweetheart contracts and severance packages with political
staffers. “Y[ou] know, they get hundreds of thousands of dollars,
and then they go back to their old job the day after,” Prentice said.
“We’re going to put an end to the sole-sourced contract where people cannot bid competitively, but receive work from the government.
We’re going to change the rules that allow people to be a Deputy
Minister of the Government today, quit the job at four o’clock, and
tomorrow morning start lobbying the people who reported to you.”
On the matter of giving away party memberships, Prentice defended his position. “We are following all of the rules. We clarified
the rules with the party before we began, and they’re very clear
about how the process works,” Prentice said, adding they would
report the numbers in a transparent way.
Alberta PC members will be selecting the next Premier in September, with a first round of voting ending on September 6, and a
second round of voting on September 20 if no candidate receives
majority support in the first round.

Can you give this animal a loving home
Hi, friends. Hummer is the name here. I am an eight-year-old male
cat who was found and came to Morinville with a tattoo. Unfortunately, we were not able to find my past owners, so I am looking
for a new family to call mine. I am soo-purrr friendly and just love
people. It takes me a while to warm up to other kitties, but don’t
worry - I come around eventually. I came in to the Morinville Vet
Clinic with a few bumps and bruises but I have been nursed back to
health with the friendly staff here. I am super chatty and love to tell
stories. So I promise if you adopt me, I’ll tell you all about them.

Asian restaurant brings
new flavour to Morinville
by Ashley Janes
Two months ago, Ivy Yen Vi opened a new
restaurant in Morinville called CJ Asian Garden, located across from the Service Credit
Union on 100 Avenue and 102 Streetin the
former Albert’s Family Restaurant location.
Yen Vi’s goal in starting up was to provide
quality home-style Asian food at an affordable price. Since then, business has flourished and her volume of success suggests
that things will only get better for the young
restaurateur.
Smiling behind the counter, the owner
explained that she chose Morinville for many
reasons, the primary one being that she enjoys the small town atmosphere. “We’re still
close to the city,” she added. “And everyone
here is so friendly.”
Yen Vi reported that throughout the passing weeks, her staff have received plenty of
excellent feedback from customers including
first time diners coming in on recommendations. “The people have been phenomenal so
far – we already have plenty of regulars!”
The dishes on the CJ Asian Garden menu
are mainly Chinese, including fan favorites
such as Green Onion Cakes, Wor Wonton
Soup, and Satay Beef Shanghai Noodles,
but there are also Vietnamese and Western
dishes to try.
According to Yen Vi, their most popular
dishes have been the Honey Pea Shrimp, the
Honey Pepper Beef, and all of their seafood
dishes like the Spicy Squid, but she strongly
recommended that customers branch out
and try any of their Vietnamese dishes which
include a variety of vermicelli noodle bowls
such as Pork with Spring Rolls.
Greg Cramp, a Morinville resident and
repeat customer stated that during every
dining experience at CJ Asian Garden, both
the food and the service was great. “The
ginger beef was excellent and I really liked
the spring rolls. I will definitely be going
back again soon to try other dishes.”
Cramp’s comment touched on another
aspect of the restaurant business that Yen Vi
adamantly prioritizes. She thinks that a suc-
cessful restaurant is built on more than just
well received food, and that attentive service
is the key to pleasing the majority of customers. “We find when you show people you
genuinely enjoy and value their business, it
makes a world of difference for their overall
experience.”
To sum it all up in a few words: Yen Vi believes in quality food and good service. Oh,
and they deliver. Which means that CJ Asian
Garden has scored the Morinville restaurant
hat trick.
They’re open Tuesday to Sunday and
while their menu is not available online, they
can be reached at 780-572-5068.

to the National Championships which
are to be held at Canadian Forces Base

Morinville – Although competitive hockey will dominate the ice
when it reappears in the Ray McDonald Sports Center later this
month, it is not the only activity planned this hockey season. FunTeam Hockey, ringette and more skating opportunities will also share
the frozen oval.
Tyler Edworthy, Morinville’s Operations and Program Coordinator, said the Morinville Mavericks would be taken on by the Town of
Morinville this year, offering recreational hockey in the community
through a program that focuses on skill development while limiting
the amount of travelling. “It’s non competitive,” he said. “What we’re
going to try and do this year is make sure that their skill base [is
there] so that if they do wish, as they get older, want to play minor
hockey, that they are given that opportunity as well.”
Ringette is being brought to town by Andre and Lisa Houle and
will run in tandem with the Mavericks program. Last spring the
Houles held an open house that drew sufficient interest for them to
move forward with the program in Morinville this fall.
The Houles were motivated by the lack of interest in hockey
among girls, and are hoping the game invented in Ontario in 1963
and played throughout the country today, will catch on in the area.
Ringette players carry straight hollow sticks to control a blue plastic ring that is shot into the opponent’s net. The game is similar to
hockey in that respect but is more focused on passing than hockey.
Ringette teams generally consist of 16 to 18 players.
While hockey and ringette sticks will be well represented on the
ice this year, there is still plenty of room for those who just like to
feel the ice beneath their blades. Like other aspects of sports and
recreation, Edworthy is looking to further develop the skills of recreational skaters as well.
Level 1 is geared for children and all about getting mobile. It
focuses on learning to get up properly and developing their stride.
Level 2 is doing the same thing backwards. “Now we’re going to
move into the Can Skate program, which is a skating development
program that leads into either power skating or figure skating,” Edworthy said, adding although the programs are geared towards children, he would love to have a learn-to-skate program for adults and
would implement one if there is sufficient interest in the community.
For more information on this summer’s hockey camp, contact
Tyler Edworthy at 780-939-7834 or 780-939-7839. Those interested
in registering can also do so online through the town of Morinville’s
website at Morinville.ca.
