Tips for a Healthy School Start in 2016/17
Literacy
For students at Namao School, the end of the school year is fast approaching. For many, this
means fun in the sun, camping and many other summer activities. Most of this is done while
spending much needed and valuable time with family and friends. There is much research that
supports the notion that much learning in school is lost over the summer, especially with regards
to literacy. While we like to take time to have fun and enjoy the summer, it is important that
students remain healthy and active, while continuing to practice their reading skills over the
summer break. Having students read items in which they are genuinely interested then are able to
reflect/have conversations about their reading with others, will help to maintain their reading skills
over the summer break.
For more information on reading over the summer, please refer to “Rethinking Summer Vacation
Homework” by Alicia Zimmerman (http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/top-teaching/2016/05/
rethinking-summer-vacation-homework).
Sleep
An abrupt transition from long summer days to an early school wake up schedule is difficult. It is
important to begin phasing in a school night schedule before summer ends. Move your child’s
bedtime up a little each night. Start a few weeks before the first day.
Here are some additional tips to help children develop good sleep habits:
Keep a consistent sleep and wake schedule
Avoid high-stimulation activities before bed
Avoid caffeine in the afternoon and evening
Exercise during the day
Delay bedtime if not drowsy
For more information, read Sleep Hygiene for Children www.seattlechildren.org/pdf/PE1066.pdf
First Day of Classes for Students
The first day for students at Namao School is Sept. 1, 2016. The first day of classes for students is
typically exciting and for some students may cause some angst. The first day of school can appear
to be organized chaos, when parents and students are arriving and attempting to determine which
classroom to go to. In order to help alleviate some of the stress for parents and students, you will
now be able to access your children’s homeroom teacher via Powerschool prior to the first day of
classes for students. Simply sign into Powerschool on or after August 30, 2016.
Playground Update
You may have heard that Namao School is building a new playground over the summer. Last year we heard exciting
news from the Federal Government, in the fact that, the Namao School Fundraising Association was successful with its
application for the Canada 150 Fund. The fund together with years of volunteers, fundraising and donations from our
school community have combined to provide the funds available for our new playground to be built this upcoming
summer.
After school ends for students, we will see the removal of our old Primary Playground and the demolition of the Ag
Societies storage shed (outside the community entrance doors). You may have already noticed the removal of the
Change Shed by the Ag Society’s Outdoor Rink. The Ag Society is also building a new Storage/Change Shed to be
built next to the Outdoor Arena this summer.
While the NSFA is still awaiting the outcome of a couple more Grant Applications, please know that the NSFA/Namao
School/Ag Society partnership will use all resources available to build the best Primary/Special Needs Playground play
area possible.
While we are very excited about the improvements happening over the summer, due to construction, please be cautious
when accessing school property.
Staffing Update
At the end of each school year, it is a time in which we get to reflect on the current school year and at the same time,
look into what next year will bring. At this time I would like to share with you some staffing changes that will impact
Namao School next year. It is with mixed feelings that I share with you the staff members that will not be returning to
our Namao School Team next year. Mrs. Filipchuk will be returning to her old stomping ground to be Vice Principal at
Landing Trail School while Mrs. Malanchen is retiring. While we are sad to see them leave Namao School we are very
thankful for their positive contributions to our students over the years. We will miss you both and wish you best of luck
in your future endeavors.
With the leaving of some staff members, we also see the introduction of a new staff member to Namao School. Please
join me in welcoming our new Vice Principal to Namao School for the 2016/17 school year. Shannon Chabot has
worked with Sturgeon School Division for 7 years and has worked at Landing Trail School and Morinville Public
School. Recently, Mrs. Chabot has been a Vice Principal at Morinville Public School. She comes with a wealth of
knowledge and experience in Special Education and has been one of our Division’s trainers with the Neuro-Sequential
Model for Education, teaching staff and students about recognizing triggers and working with self-regulation
techniques so that students are ready for learning. We are very excited to welcome Mrs. Chabot to the Namao School
team. Please take a moment to say hi and introduce yourself to Mrs. Chabot in the new school year.
CTF Courses (formerly known as Options)
Over the last few years we have been accustomed to having Jr. High Option courses presented and shared with parents
of Grade 6 students at the end of the school year. Last year, we had to make significant changes to the planned Options
presented in the Spring due to last minute staffing changes at the school level. This year, the Career and Technology
Foundation Course offerings (formerly known as Options), will be made available to Parents and Students at the
beginning of September. Information will be presented to students during Advisory, made available to parents via the
Namao School website and forms will be sent home with students to complete with their parents in September.
Report Cards
As was the case last year, we will continue to be issuing your child’s report card electronically.
Access to the report card is password protected, so please feel confident that the information is
secure.
If you prefer a paper copy (the electronic copy will look just like the paper one), please contact
the school before June 29/16.
An email message indicating that report cards are ready along with access information will be
sent out late in the day on June 29/16 for all students.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact us at the school.
Bring Your Own Device implementation - Gr. 5 and Gr. 6 for the 2016/17 school year
The feedback that you provided during Parent Teacher Student Interviews in March, with regards to
Namao School implementing “Bring Your Own Device” for students in Grades 5 and 6 next year, was
very valuable. As well, the presentation by representatives from Gibbons School (Principal, Teachers,
Parent and Student) was very informative for parents at our School Council meeting on April 19/16. The
feedback was positive while parents and students had many questions. Parents, students and teachers are
very excited about the many opportunities that having your own personal device for learning at school
and at home will provide. Thank you to Gibbons School representatives for their presentation and to all
of the parents who were able to attend and provide feedback at Parent Teacher Interviews in March and at
School Council in April.
At school we would promote the effective, ethical and educational use of technology with our students.
This means that students would bring their own personal devices to school as part of their educational
supplies.
This exciting opportunity does not come without some obstacles. Together we would be responsible to
educate students on the proper use of the device, the educational opportunities, internet safety,
responsible use, care and maintenance.
We understand that families are always having to plan ahead and save. In consideration of this, we want
you to take advantage of the time to start putting money away, purchase for birthdays or other special
events in anticipation of an October 2016 start. Teachers would take the month of September to establish
classroom rules and routines prior to introducing the Chromebooks in October.
Considerations:
When considering purchasing a device for school, that you consider a Chromebook. This is the most
cost effective option to meet your child’s educational needs while at Namao School.
The BYOD would be in all Grades from 5 to 9 eventually, hence your child will use the Chromebook
for the remainder of their educational experience while at Namao School.
Safety and protection of the device is never guaranteed, so your child would be responsible to secure
the device in a locked locker or in the charging space in the classroom. Damage and loss
prevention protection would be the responsibility of the family.
For those who are not able to purchase a Chromebook, we would have a few loaners available that
could be signed out.
You can purchase a Chromebook from your own source or see the information provided on the next page.
The N21 will be available until supplies last. The N22 is the replacement model
that will be available in May.
