November Chapter Meeting attendance: 36 (35 members & 1 guest). We had 2 members mail in checks that were not in the original count called into the hotel. We need to determine a better method of collecting checks at the mailbox and communicating the purpose of the checks to hospitality. Luckily the Marriott made 4 extra turkey dinners. Thank you to Barbara Weiss and Susan Sprague for switching their meals from lasagna to turkey. Reminder: If you don’t reserve in advance, your dinner selection may be subject to Marriott’s availability. LADIES NIGHT OUT MEMBERSHIP 64 members are currently on the roster. BROOKWOOD A visit to Brookwood took place on Monday, November 6, 2010. Sherri Miller went in my place as I was unable to attend. She shared a craft with the girls. A Holiday Party for the girls is planned on Monday, December 13, 2010. Am planning a dinner and gifts for the girls. If anyone is interested in helping with this, please let me know. Ladies Night Out was a huge success. The 2011 co-chairs will be Holly Wright and Lois Margolin. We hope to have the event at the THE SEARCH IS ON…FOR CHAPTER WOMAN OF THE YEAR! By Wendy King Each year one of our members is honored as CHAPTER WOMAN OF THE YEAR. This honor will be conferred at our March meeting. If you’ve applied in the past, do it again. If you’ve never applied and fulfill the criteria, please detail the highlights of your life and career, and become a part of this great program. Criteria: Be a female. Be a current or past chapter officer or committee chairperson. Be a chapter member for at least one year (as of December 1, 2010). Have made a major contribution in time or effort to the chapter. It is suggested to have two applications – carry one around with you and when you think of things to include, jot down notes in the proper category. Then, when you put it all together, it will be easy. Update them from year to year and keep it current. Presentation does affect the judges, although points are not given for it. Traditionally, our judges have been nonABWA professionals from our surrounding business community. The WOY application will be available at our January chapter meeting, or contact Wendy King directly at 954-6581969 (or via email at [email protected] ). The deadline for completing the application is January 31, 2011. PAGE 6 Cont’d from Page 1 quarter (one house per quarter) in 2011. Please email me [email protected] & let me know which quarterly event would be better for you: January – March, April – June, July – September, or October – December. The specific dates will be determined later. LE MP EXA Thank you once again to the fabulous femmes who shared their goodies (cookies, apples, & sparkling drinks), their ABWA hopes & dreams, and their precious time with us on this relaxing Sunday evening in November 2010. Let’s do this again soon! Computer Corner Computer Corner "Why do I have all of these extra toolbars??!!" Contributed by Lois Margolin One thing that I notice almost daily is that people have way too many toolbars in Internet Explorer. Believe it or not these added toolbars can slow down your Internet experience a lot. A toolbar is a bar that appears in your Internet Explorer (or other browser) under the Address Bar (where you type the "www."). When you first install Internet Explorer it only has it's built in toolbars included. But after time, you will notice that more and more toolbars appear. How did they get here? When you install programs on your PC, a lot of them will ask you if you want to install the toolbar, some will not. For instance, when you install AVG Free, it asks you if you want to install the AVG toolbar. The same goes for a lot of the programs out there. After awhile, it gets out of control and you end up with 4, 5 or 6 toolbars that you'll never use. It's up to you, but I always tell it NOT to install the toolbar when asked, it slows things down and sometimes causes crashes. Here is how to remove the unwanted toolbars in Internet Explorer: 1. Open the "View" menu of your browser 2. Choose "Toolbars" 3. Uncheck the toolbar name. You will notice that the toolbars will disappear and your Internet Explorer should be a little more responsive. PAGE 7 PAGE 8 LADIES NIGHT OUT—AN EVENING WITH FRIENDS, FASHION & FUN! By Lois Margolin Our Ladies Night Out (LNO) event, hosted at the Marriott Hotel, turned out to be a blockbuster event for the Coral Springs Charter Chapter. We had vendors selling their holiday wares, a fashion show with a wide range of styles, door prizes, raffles and great food. The Marriott was decorated and ready for this fabulous event. The morning of November 16, 2010 dawned with anticipation from the Ladies Night Out co-chairs, Lois Margolin and Nancy Wolfe. They eagerly tackled the last minute issues anxiously awaiting the moment they could begin to transport all the raffle items from Nancy’s home to the Marriott. Finally at 2:00, some volunteers arrived at Nancy’s home and began loading up all the raffle prizes. We arrived at the Marriott!!. The fourth Annual Ladies Night Out was here. And what a night it was. We had over 10 food vendors, 45 vendors, 62 raffle prizes, 32 door prizes, a fashion show and 20 volunteers. Each year it seems the Ladies Night Out event has doubled in size. This year was no exception. Holly Wright and Barbara Weiss, the registration co-chairs, with help from Sue Hand, got things ready at the registration desk. They could not have imagined the flood of people that would arrive at 6:00. Joyce Hunter welcomed the vendors while Maureen Kohler, Stephanie Cohen, Sherri Miller, Paula Pirozzi and Kathy Gallagher organized the raffles. We missed Cheryl Scavron, the raffle co-chair who with Sherri Miller helped coordinate all the wonderful raffle prizes. A special thanks to Dr. Marlene Wolf and the Coral Springs Medical Center for supplying our goody bags Dr. Dora Vilk-Shapiro and Bonnie Metviner were our official door greeters with nice bright smiles and Lilli Ahmadpour handed out the goody bags. Judy Sander sold lots of raffle tickets while moving throughout the room. Our fashion co-chairs Sheila Holtz and Beverly Rothstein had our models looking beautiful with fashions from Sweetface HighFashion Boutique. We are delighted with the results of the event. It seemed like everyone was smiling, the merchants, food vendors, volunteers, members, fashion models even the Marriott personnel. Were you able to shop at all the vendor tables? If you need a name or telephone number, please contact us. So what was different about this year? We had 20 volunteers! The program was professionally printed and ads were sold early, thanks to Lilli Ahmadpour who created the logo and program. Our publicity co-chair Annyse Gross was so good at handling publicity that phone calls were coming in the day of the event asking if it was too late to be a vendor or buy the early bird tickets? The food vendors were very generous in their menu choices and the Marriott has a great reputation. Our DJ Ricardo Rivera of Professional Productions and our photographer, Tiffany and Mark Dhooge from Genesis Photography were both a big plus. A big thank you to o our members who supported this fabulous event and of course our LNO volunteers. It’s a great deal of fun planning the largest fund raiser for the chapter. Did you know, we already have a list of vendors for 2011? We are gaining a strong reputation for hosting a fun holiday shopping event. Every year we get better and better. Next year’s co-chairs, Holly Wright and Lois Margolin will be looking for volunteers soon, so raise your hand and become part of the LNO family. PAGE 9 LADIES NIGHT OUT— A Blockbuster Event for ABWA! Dinner and table conversation followed. Speaker Introduction: Program CoChair Lynn Fedoriw introduced our speaker, Erin Glass of Viziun Media, a company which provides social media consultation and services and was nominated for the Best Tech Company in South Florida. Erin’s topic was ―Social Media Stardom: How to get in front of over 500 Million People.‖ Erin guided us through what social media sites to consider for our business based on demographics, how frequently we want to reach our prospects, the style of communication we wish to use, and our budget. She covered tips about Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Linked In, and how people spend more time on these sites than on a regular website. We learned how to segment friends into different types of lists on Facebook and Twitter, how to make a short link on bit.ly, and what types of updates and posts to make to engage your visitors. Paula Pirozzi thanked Jo Burdette for the fall decorations on our tables for the meeting. Paula Pirozzi announced that we need a venue for our Holiday Party to be held on December 11, as well as a committee. Lola Lobel volunteered to provide poinsettias for the tables. The Chapter cooks the turkey and ham, and members bring side dishes and desserts. Spouses are invited.
