grow our chapter’s future

Chapter Meeting Minutes
The Al-Lu-We Chapter
of ABWA met on July 19,
2011, at Catfish Cabin,
our at-sea cruise stop.
The meeting was called to
order by President Melodie Toland who welcomed
our 21 members and four

guests. Incoming Vice
President Kay Price led us
in our Invocation and the
Pledge of Allegiance.
Paula Hiller introduced
our guest speaker, Tess
Mack, who spoke about
social media safety and
blogging, and rules of
the internet. She gave

tweeting and changing our
facebook could benefit our
chapter. Tess talked about
what is “good information” and what should not
be put out on the internet
when building your blog,
facebook, or any social
media pages. She gave
away 3 free media classe
gift certificates by asking

The minutes and treasurer’s reports were approved as printed in the
newsletter. Sandy Cox
reported on the audit
committee’s findings
during their audit. Some
of the findings were only
one signature on checks
and unpaid chapter dues.
Marilyn Wagstaff-Moss
updated us on Macy’s
Shop for a Cause as well
as sending around a signup sheet for the three,
possibly four, shifts
working this event. If
unable to work the shift
you signed up for, you’re
responsible for finding a
replacement. All tickets
sold must be called in
to incoming President
Jane Winkler by Tuesday
evenings. Her phone
number is 850-6171. She
must report the total
number of tickets sold
to Macy’s on Wednesday. All monies are to
be turned in to incoming Treasurer Kathryn
Orrell.
Paula Hiller handed

to fourteen members.

on Women which will be
September 17th. Reservations must be made by
our August 16th chapter
meeting; the cost is $35
per person. Area Council
has purchased silver buckets which will be given to
chapter delegates at the
quarterly meeting Thursday, July 28, to take back to
their chapter. The buckets
are to be filled with theme
items with a value of no
less than $50. Two of the
speakers will be Jane Jenkins, CEO of Downtown
OKC, and Linda Vatar,
gardner extraordinaire.

were initiated, each receiving a white carnation.

“Hope 5K and Survivor’s
Walk” that will take place
on Saturday, September
10th with registration set
$25 per person, Survivor’s
Walk around the Brick-
town Ball Park or $35 for
the 5K. We discussed that
those that wanted to participate in the walk could

own Suzanna Laurent.

a possible new fundraiser
of working concession at
the OKC Arena during
Thunder games, concerts,
and other events. The
chapter would be paid $60
for each person working. Arena personnel will
provide a schedule for
the entire year/season
which will show when our
chapter would be working.
This means ample time to
prepare for who will work
each event. An application must be completed
and turned in to the Arena
personnel before August
1st. Melodie Toland

fundraiser with Sandy Cox.

Meet the Speaker!
Lisa Johnson has spent developed a passion for the students to successher career advocating for
those who don’t have a
voice as well as teaching
others how to advocate. She
attended OSU-Oklahoma
City and earned her A.S.
in Public Service Administration. While attending
OSU-OKC, she was heavily involved with student organizations on campus. She
established the Sociology
Club with Student Government Association and
was a founding member of
College Republicans. She
was also a member of Phi
Theta Kappa and Student
Government Association.
She interned for a Political Action Committee and
as State Legislature. After graduation, she transferred to the University of
Oklahoma on a Phi Theta
Kappa scholarship where
she earned her B.A. in
Criminology with a minor
in history. Her concentration in her studies focused
on women and juveniles
in the corrections system.
While studying at OU, Lisa
worked as an Officer/Unit
Manager at Oklahoma
County Juvenile Detention
Center. While working in
detention she recognized
the much larger need and

helping teens on a more
preventative level. After
graduating from OU, Lisa
began working for Girl
Scouts of Western Oklahoma where she became the
Outreach Lead. She worked
with teens in medium and
minimum treatment facilities as well as taught a
leadership class Emerson
Alternative High School.
She also taught self-esteem, anti-bully and leadership workshops to students
from numerous inner-city
elementary schools, Oklahoma Housing Authority
sites and various summer
programs. Lisa, in a collaborative effort with Metro
Career Academy and Boy
Scouts Last Frontier Council established a mentoring program for students
in a community based
alternative high school.
Lisa is currently a Coordinator for Educational Talent Search Trio Program
at Oklahoma State University. Trio is a federally
funded program divided
into seven different concentrations to work with
students who are from
low-income, first generation college students. Lisa
serves over 500 students
in rural schools outside
of Stillwater who are in
6th-12th grades. She helps

fully complete high school
and prepares them to enter
post-secondary education.
Lisa attended an organizational planning conference for Oklahoma Smart
in 2009 (www.oksmart.org)
and sat on the Blue Ribbon Committee for the
Solutions Initiative Summit
which proposed a ten year
plan to reduce the incarceration rate of women in
Oklahoma. (www.oklahomasis.com) She sat on the
Advocacy Panel for the 1st
Annual Leadership Summit Held by Girl Scouts of
Western Oklahoma. (www.
gswestok.org) Lisa has recently completed Level 1
of the Emerging Leaders
Institute for Oklahoma
Division of Student Assistance Programs (www.
odsa.org) and is currently a
member of the Southwest
Associations for Student
Assistance Programs. She
attended the 31st Annual
Policy Seminar in Washington D.C. for the Council
for Opportunity in Education.

ultimately reducing incarceration rates in the State
of Oklahoma by increasing the level of education
in the most at risk areas.

Chapter Standing Rules
Standing rules are temporary rules intended to assist the Board and Chapter Members in carrying
out assigned duties. They
may be changed by a simple majority vote by all
members of the Chapter.
Al-Lu-We’s
Standing
Rules for the 2011-2012
year are as follows:
1.
The Contact Committee will turn in the names
of members making reservations for dinner to
the Treasurer by the Friday before the meeting if
advanced reservations are
needed. If a member or
their guest cannot attend
the meeting after making a
reservation, the reservation
must be canceled within
the time frame set by the
restaurant. If an unused
reservation is not canceled
and the restaurant charges
the chapter, the Treasurer
shall bill the member. If
the reservation remains
unpaid, then the member
will no longer be in “good
standing” with the chapter.
2.
The Woman of the
Year is elected in January
and is the Chapter’s Top
Ten Business woman. If
the Woman of the Year

elected does not meet the
criteria for the Top Ten
Business Woman, another
member can be elected
Top Ten Business Woman.
The chapter will pay the
registration for the WOY
at either the ABWA Annual or Spring Conference.
If the WOY cannot attend,
another member may use
the funds for an ABWA
conference. To qualify for
chapter WOY, the candidate must have held an office or a chairmanship in
Al-Lu-We for at least one
year.
3.
Each retiring President shall receive a “Past
President’s Pin and Guard”
ordered by the Treasurer in time for presentation at the July meeting.
4. Each newly elected of-
ficer shall receive a guard
which will be handed down
by the outgoing officer.
Each officer is responsible
for the replacement of the
guard should it be lost or
damaged.
5. Members shall be re-
sponsible for notifying the
Sunshine committee when
they know of any illness,
hospitalization, or death of
a member. The Sunshine
Committee shall act upon
notification.

OSU college roommates,
celebrated their birthdays
with lunch at The Rancher’s Club at the OSU Student Union in Stillwater.
Bev Couch had another surgery at Mercy on 8/9. It is
estimated she will remained
hospitalized for 2 weeks.
Her surgery went great and
she’s on her way to recovery.
Donna Bronson and Bailee
Bronson welcomed their new
grandaughter and cousin on
8/3. Channing Grace arrived
at Mercy Hospital at 10:40
pm weighing 7 lbs & 8 oz.
Suzanna
Laurent
has
finished her chemo treatments.
She’s
looking
good and feeling better.
Debra Carter is back in the
hospital though due to her recent kidney transplant. She’s
rejecting this third kidney. We
hope she feels better soon.
Laurie Glasco is ill and
we need to keep her in
our hearts and prayers.

Chapter Logo and History
In October 1997, Margaret A. Gaeddert designed
and donated our chapter
logo. At the presentation,
she said “ABWA members
represent superior and
brave women. The Native
American woman is that
woman as well. I wanted
my art to represent both
ABWA members and the
Native American woman.
“The triangles represent
strength and stability, the
circles represent unity, the
wolf face represents nature
and the brave woman. The
Native American woman’s
face represents ABWA’s AlLu-We Chapter members.
The free flowing shapes
from her headdress represent creative thought, and

the solid bands of color
represent peace among
the tension of diagonal
lines. The feather was a favorite area of the art for
me. The feather and its
detail represent the beauty and delicate nature of
all women. I truly hope
your members enjoy the
art and its true meaning!”
The name Al-Lu-We was
recommended by Marie
Standford, and it means
superior, brave, or something better in the Algonquin language of the
Cheyenne and Arapaho
Indians, which represents
the culture and traditions bestowed on us by
Oklahoma’s rich Native
American heritage. Smoke
Signals reflects Native
American communication.

Since our chapter was
chartered on April 13,
1981, our members have
been striving to become
superior, brave, and
something better, thus
our accomplishments
have been many. They
include earning the
highest national award,
every year (Star Award
is now called the Best
Practices Level 1 award)
since our inception. We
have won 20 newsletter awards, including
two national awards,
started 12 new chapters,
presented more than
$75,000 in local scholarships, and provided numerous educational and
networking opportunities for our members.
