announce their latest exhibition Word In Motion, that aims to uplift and inspire commuters with poetry and moving image during January 2012.

Word In Motion unites
some of London’s finest poets, writers and lyricists (including Ray Davies, Kate Tempest and Ben100 PIXELS WIDE MINIMUM
jamin Zephaniah) with leading artists (including Malcolm Garrett, Hexstatic and Why Not Associates) in a collaborative
project to be screened on the London Underground. Taking it’s cue from the seeming indifference shown to literature
and the written word during the London riots, Word In Motion aims to reinvigorate an interest in poetry and writing as
well as amuse and visually inspire people during the bleak month of January.
Each written piece is being brought to life by motion artists with 20-second-typographic-films. All the artists have picked
their chosen piece blind with no knowledge of which writers’ work they are animating. This was done firmly in a spirit of
democracy and to ensure the artists have an emotional engagement with their chosen poem.
The exhibition will include fantastic submissions from writers in response to a request for contributions. These were
judged by Bang Said the Gun, Jarvis Cocker, Cerys Matthews, Murray Lachlan Young and Mark One – BAFTA winning director and creative director.

The films were premiered exclusively with the sound of their writers voice at the XOYO gallery in Shoreditch on the 11th

January 2011. Guest poets including Murray Lachlan Young, Rick Holland, Inua Ellams, Salena Godden, Musa Okwonga,
Paul Lyalls, NIkesh Shukla and Francesca Beard performed live at the event. Maxi Jazz from Faithless, played as special
guest DJ set.
For the January exhibition the Smile Team are partnering with augmented reality mobile app Blippar™, that uses the
latest image recognition technology enabling commuters to view selected WiM films on their mobiles anywhere on the
Underground, without the need for a network signal.
Word In Motion launches on the London Underground during morning and evening rush hours, on the 16th January
2012, and will run for two weeks.

Smile for London’s mission is to bring the diverse talent, creativity and culture of London adn beyond to the digital screens on
the Underground.
Schedule
The films will be on display across 60 digital screens on the London Underground every morning (7am-10am) and evening
(4pm -7pm) rush hour for 2 weeks from 16th January 2012. Stations include: Angel, Camden Town, Oxford Circus, Bond Street,
Charing Cross, Covent Garden, Knightsbridge, Paddington, Euston, Piccadilly Circus, Victoria and Waterloo. Full schedule can

About the films
The poetry brief invited writers to inspire and uplift viewers, with subject matter covering people, places, experiences or
observations - they didn’t need to be Londoncentric. The form of poetry was left up to the writer - everything from classic poetic
forms to free verse were all welcome.
Entries were open to all, however they were particuarly encouraging the young people of London to take part to help invigorate
a passion in poetry and prose. Submissions were to be between 5 and 40 words long. They also need to be read and recorded
as an mp3 the sound file to help the motion designers translate the pace and passion of the readings into a visual representation
of the poems.
