Greetings Tico Shipmates, Family and Friends!
As I write this message the weather here in Minneapolis
should be turning to the fall temperatures of highs in the 70’s
and not getting close to the 90’s that we are to have during the Labor Day Weekend.
As another summer starts to come to a close I think back to our reunion here in
Minneapolis and the good times that were had during those days in May. Lloyd and
Joyce Frank are working hard for our 2016 reunion in Las Vegas as they are handling
all of the details themselves! They will be providing more information on this reunion
in this issue and subsequent issues to come.
As of this writing The Minneapolis Reunion Book is just about ready for distribution.
Sandy Murphy, our Reunion Book Creator, has received the proof copy and has a
couple of adjustments to make prior to distribution.
In this issue there will be a mention about Honor Flights to Washington DC for our
World War II Veterans to view the World War II Memorial and other Memorials that
are in the Washington DC area. The tour cost is at No Charge to the World War II
Veterans. I hope that the World War II Veterans in our Association will consider going
on this great tour.
With regard to our Website I have asked our WebMaster to add a Link on
“Mesothelioma”. This will give our Association Members and Visitors to our website
valuable information on extensive prognosis support and an information source online.
I hope the upcoming fall season is a good one for all our members, family and friends.

Fellow Shipmates & Friends,
During my time on the Tico there was an officer who would come up
to the bridge from time to time and take readings utilizing a sextant to work
out our location. I saw him do this both at night and during the day.
A sextant is basically an instrument used to determine latitude and
longitude at sea by measuring angular distances, especially the altitudes of the
sun, moon, and the stars. The use of this instrument for navigation of the water ways goes back in time
many centuries. The principles utilized for navigation were understood as far back as 2000 years ago.
Through the centuries, Greek, Arab, and
later, Spanish and English navigators made various changes to its form, ultimately improving its accuracy
and ease of use.
One day, observing this officer diligently working with the sextant, I asked why he bothered to
keep up this skill in light of all the modern technology we have which allows us to know with great
accuracy where the ship was and where it was heading. He said it was an interest he had picked up
while he was in school. It further afforded him the opportunity to get out and study the sky (especially at
night). While simply observing the sky day and night was enjoyable, it also comforted him. There was a
satisfaction in always knowing which way was home. Further, he felt it caused him to feel closer to God
as he looked out at His heavenly creation.
Personally, one of my favorite things to do at night when the Ship was running dark was to make
a quick visit to the aft look-out. Out in the middle of the ocean, with no light to interfere with the
natural view, you could see the incredible Milky Way in a way that was exceptional! Once, when we
were in the Mediterranean, there was a comet in the sky that could be seen with the naked eye and
seemed to shine almost as brightly as a quarter moon!
As an amateur astronomer, I am constantly looking at the night sky and even the sun during the
day (I own a Hydrogen Alpha telescope that enables me to look directly at the sun). I can most certainly
relate to this officer’s feelings of being in awe of God’s creation when I look out at the night sky and see
its expanse and all that is in our local part of the universe. In my current job, I have the opportunity to
bring my telescopes to an elementary school, and to informally teach adults a bit about astronomy. It is
one of the greatest joys in life to see the expressions that children and adults have when they get to see
Jupiter and Saturn, or even the moon for the first time with their own eyes in a telescope. Their faces
beam and their eyes grow wide as they see sunspots and prominences with great detail on the sun!
Psalm 19 verse 1 states, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His
handiwork.” This verse seems to indicate that we can, in fact, get a true sense of God’s existence in His
creation along with a basic understanding of the order He has installed in His “handiwork”.
So, perhaps when you are feeling far from home, whether in actual distance or just emotionally
distant from those you love, or you find yourself wondering if God has forgotten you, just look up. See
His creation and order and let it draw you back home to Him.

the past few issues. I am hoping we can work in one or two into this and future
newsletters. Keep sending them (I don’t throw anything out). Our only rules are
to keep profanity and politics out of it.
I think we have the dues dates on the labels fixed. Please let me know if any of
the data on your newsletter label is incorrect (including the dues paid thru date)
and I will fix it.
It is gratifying to see more Cruiser sailors joining. Keep passing the word guys,
we are very happy to welcome you and hope you will join us at future reunions
as well.
If you have any comments, commendations, questions, or criticisms, you can

It is with great sadness that we report the DEATHS
of the following shipmates:
Charles G Hurst - Charles was not an Association member. He was, however, brought
home on a Tico “Magic Carpet” crossing at the end of World War II. His son Chip notified
us of his passing on March 29, 2015. His grave is in the Birmingham, AL National
Cemetery.
James E Sullivan – James was a Life Member who passed away on July 10, 2015. We
were notified by his daughter Jamie Henry. James was a veteran of three wars (WWII,
Korea, Vietnam). While on board in WWII he served in 8th Division as a SN 1/C. He
lived in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Raymond “Buzz” Means – Buzz was a Life Member who passed away on July 5, 2015.
While on board from 1944 to 1945 he was an AMM 3/C in V-1 Division. He subsequently
served in the Navy for 24 Years achieving the rate of Chief Petty Officer. He was born in
Santa Ana CA in 1925 and spent most of his life in San Diego, residing in El Cajon for
the past 52 years. Buzz was active in several organizations including: Holy Trinity Catholic
Church, El Cajon Western Little League, El Cajon Optimist Club, and the USS Midway
Aircraft Carrier Museum. On February 13, 2010 Buzz was honored as one of the last
seven names inscribed on the Purple Heart Monument in Balboa Park. He was the next
to last WWII member to host a reunion which he and his wife Joyce did in San Diego in
2006. He was wounded in the Kamikaze attacks of January 1945. He is survived by his
wife, Florence “Joyce” Means; a son, Michael; a daughter, Lynn; stepchildren, Kathy,
Nancy, John, and Sheree along with 15 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Harold B Kaufman – Harold was a Life Member of the Association who passed away
07/09/2015. Harold’s wife Edie notified us of his death and asked that we make sure to
thank the members of the Association for “a lot of great memories – especially the San
Diego reunion”. While on board in 1944, Harold was an RT-2. He lived in New York City.
William E Stever – we received word from the daughter of William that he died 9 years
ago. William was a Life Member who served as a Baker 2C in S-1 Division in 1944.
He was from Bridgeport, CT.
John C. Lawler – John was a Life Member who passed away on May 10, 2015. While
onboard he served as a LTJG as the Admin Officer in X Division from 1963-1965.
John lived in Olalla, WA and is survived by his wife Deloris.
Non Member Francis (fritz) Donald Handl, who served during WWII as a radio man
passed in August, 1998. We were notified of this by his daughter.

Around the Horn

In the spring of 1957 the Ticonderoga CVA-14 had completed a seven-month stay in dry dock at
the Portsmouth Virginia Shipyards. The ship received an angle flight deck, hurricane bow, and
a host of other upgrades.
The Ti was scheduled for a home-port change from Norfolk Virginia to Alameda NAS in Alameda
California. With the angle flight deck we were unable to go through the Panama Canal, so, we
set sail about mid-March for Cape Horn. We made our first port of call in Trinidad, crossing the
Equator April 26, 1957.
All hands were briefed on the rough seas around Cape Horn and, as we approached the Cape, a
storm blew in. In a few hours the seas began to build. It was about 9:30 PM when the ship was
hit by a giant wave and it was getting pretty nasty. Things were being thrown about and all hands
were on alert. No one got any sleep that night!
Later checking the damage, we were told of seas in excess of 55 feet. We had an eight-foot crack
in the bow, the forward hanger deck had a three-inch buckle, the aft expansion joint had switched
places (top plate now on bottom), and all of the antennas and catwalks on the Starboard side were
missing. We had taken on water all the way back to the superstructure.
A lot of the “old salts” thought we were headed for Davy Jones’ Locker. I think by having the
hurricane bow we may have avoided disaster.
I was told the Captain had failed to slow to a safe speed and after a couple more incidents he was
relieved of duty.
Finally arriving in California, the ship was in dry dock at Hunters Point for 31 days to repair the
damage.
I left the ship in October 1957 in Japan for shore duty at Alameda. My total time aboard
Ticonderoga was September 1955 to October 1957.

Kamikaze #1
It was a lovely, sunny day and I was in my compartment: 206 2nd deck aft. One of the guys in my
compartment from the generator gang mentioned a school mate of his had been wounded in an SB2C.
So we went up to survey the damage to the plane on the hanger deck. The airdales were fueling planes and arming
them to prepare for another raid. While I had my head in the trap door of the SB2C plane looking in and could
see there was blood from the gunner's injuries. We heard the Marine 20 mm on the starboard side open fire. My
first instinct was to run over to see what they were shooting at when I realized there was a war going on. Anything
close enough for 20 mm was too damn close. So I ran forward on the hanger deck to the hatch by the deck edge
elevator to get to my GQ station.
People were coming up the down ladder, I pushed them back with my foot on the first man's chest and told them
they were going up the down ladder, “get on the other side”. I proceeded down to the third deck and that's when
the first kamikaze dropped his bomb. The plane had gone through the flight deck and slid in the hanger into the
#1 elevator pit. It hit at the hanger edge deck elevator I had just come down.
Going forward through the forward third deck mess hall, I saw there were several 1000 lb. bombs being armed to
be sent up to the hanger deck to arm the planes. It scared me and my first instinct was to get the hell away from
them. There was chaos and panic by crew members in the area with the same idea as I. Arriving at the hatch that
goes to 6 deck, an Ensign was standing on the hatch ladder blocking the way to my GQ station, he was waving a 45
around over his head yelling “Calm down” directing people away from the bombs but keeping us from proceeding
to the 6th deck. I asked him to step down to allow us to go below, which he did.
I proceeded to the 6th deck staying down there at my station, continuing to make water as we were never told to
stand down.
Kamikaze #2
We were told kamikaze #2 did figure 8s over the ship, attempting to avoid gun fire and get closer in.
For some reason in our forward auxiliary, there was a phone jack connected to the manning of the heavy guns to
the sky director, which directed the 5 inch and 40 mm guns. Some of our men could hear the chief gunnery officer
in the sky director yelling “fire, fire, fire”. That was the last we heard. The second kamikaze’s first bomb went off
just as it hit the sky director next to the island and its second exploded on the sky director, dislodging it. The ship
shook with the second plane hit.
We had no communication top side, but someone found out, after the second plane hit, we were told to abandon
ship. Fortunately, that did not happen.
During the confinement, while the firefighters were washing gasoline over the side, our compartment filled with
smoke. The ship was listed to port 10 degrees. We thought the ship was sinking.
Damage Control was washing the fire and fuel over the side. The engineers must have closed the hatches all along
the whole 3rd deck. Three feet of water had accumulated on that deck.
Along with me, on the 5 and 6 decks, there must have been about 15-20 men in our forward auxiliary, as well as
many other engineering spaces trapped below the 3rd deck. After the fire was out, Damage Control pumped enough
water off the 3rd deck, we were able to go topside. I don't remember where I went but probably back to my sack.
A couple days later I was surveying the damage. Going into #1 elevator pit, I could see the engine from that first
plane hit. It had a Pratt Whitney Aircraft name plate mounted on the side of the engine. We were heading for
Ulithi, on to Pearl and then to Bremerton for repairs.
