PLEASE HELP!
We are always looking for Memorabilia for our Museum Rooms. Soon we will be starting one
at the Mississippi Maritime and Warship Museum in Pascagoula, MS so keep us in mind as we
will be starting with very little memorabilia. One thing we would like to find is some Military
Payment Certificates "Funny Money" that was used to pay us during the Viet Nam war. If you
have anything you want to donate contact Ed Trotter at [email protected]. Thanks for your
help in keeping our memories alive to others through our Museum Rooms.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
AHOY SHIPMATES AND FRIENDS,
I just completed and mailed my registration form and hotel
reservation for the Tico 2014 Reunion in Charleston, SC on
May 22-27. Hope all of you have, too. If not--"Get on it, Sailor!"
Deadlines are fast approaching.
Armed Forces Reunion, our coordinator Jerry Cole and I
are finalizing plans for a great event. We want as many of you as possible to
be a part of it. Remember we are not having a guest speaker at the banquet
but want members, especially our World War II guys, to share their stories of
their time on the Ti. So brush up on your story telling skills and be prepared
to swap sea stories ( the cleaned up version! ) with us at the banquet.
As we are getting a better handle on our financial situation, we are finding
we are about out of money. This edition of the newsletter will about use it up.
In our Treasurer George Passantino',s words: " We can fight our way back,
but it will take cutting expenses while raising revenues along with obtaining
greater donations." George will have a budget and a business plan at our
meeting in Charleston. Come with your ideas and be ready to offer
suggestions and discuss options. Be sure to read Secretary Dennis SaBell's
comments in his message.
I hope a lot of you are working on submitting your Biographies for the book
Ed Trotter is putting together for our Reunion gift: " CV-14 Remembrances
and Other Tico Crew Biographies". It would be so much more meaningful if
we have a lot of fellow shipmates in it. I'm getting to work on mine as soon
as I finish this message!
This newsletter is our final Reunion notice. Don't miss out. Reunions are
much better when more shipmates attend. I'm getting lots of calls in response
to Jerry's Reunion notice in the veteran's magazines. So far they are all new
to the Association and want information on the Reunion and membership.
Hopefully we'll have lots of new members and attendees.
Looking forward to seeing you all in Charleston!
John Deasy

From: Robert F. Dorr
Subject: Seeking help from BigT Association members
Hello,
I'm Bob Dorr, author of books, magazine articles and newspaper columns about military history and a
former writer for Navy Times newspaper.
I'm writing a history of Bombing Eighty, or VB-80, to be published by a major New York publisher in
2015. I'm looking for anyone who can help with personal recollections, information or pictures of the
events of January 21, 1945, when Ticonderoga came under attack by kamikaze. I'm especially
looking for a way to add more detail to a description of Capt. Dixie Kiefer's performance on the bridge
while the ship was under attack.
Can you put me in contact with anyone who might help? I especially encourage people to pick up the
phone and call.
Best wishes,
Robert F. Dorr, 3411 Valewood Drive, Oakton VA 22124

FROM THE GUESTBOOK MESSAGE BOARD & EMAIL
Shipmates – every once and a while we put postings from our guestbook and the CG-47 Message Board
in the Newsletter. These are mainly questions from family members but some are from our shipmates
needing info. Many others are posted saying they enjoyed their time on board and maybe looking for
any person in their Division or certain persons they knew. Feel free to respond as needed.
If you are interested in being the coordinator for responses to these postings please contact our President,
John Deasy.

My father, John Patterson, was killed in the Kamikaze strikes in January, 1945. I would like to know if anyone remembers
him and can share any stories about their service together on the Ticonderoga.

Hi, I am actually trying to find my birth father. He served on the Tico CVA-14. I have an official photo of him re-enlisting
in 1968 to head back to the Philippines. My father’s last name is Metz, I was adopted into the Lindorfer family in 1971.
My mother gave up sole custody in 1970. If anyone has information on his service or whereabouts I would appreciate
some help. Thanks for serving our country and God Bless You all, Gratefully, Kathleen Lynn (Metz) Lindorfer

you can help, it would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Douglas Kelton 08-19-2013 [email protected]
Need help getting verification about USS Ticonderoga's 1972-1973 deployment to Vietnam. I was aboard then assigned
to Air AntiSubron 35/VS-35. Even though my DD-214 says I served there and was awarded the Vietnam service medal
w/one bronze star they are saying I was never there and if I was we where never in enemy waters. So, they keep denying
me service connected disability. Can anyone help me out with this issue or tell me what I can do. Thank you.
Douglas W. Kelton 08-14-2013 [email protected]
I am having a problem with the VA system . I have a original DD-214 that states that I served in Vietnam & earned a
Vietnam service medal w/one bronze star. The VA keeps denying me when their own doctors have diagnosed me with all
these ailments because of my service and I have documentation that states that I did serve there. What can a old swabby
do to prove them wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I need help very badly. My father was in supply on the ship when she was in Viet Nam and he is dead now but he died
fighting the VA for benifits he should have gotten and I am still after years fighting for him. His name was William Worley
and the Va says they lost part of his records in a fire in Chicago. I need men that were on the ship to contact me. Since
my dad was in supply it was different because he had to have a place were he could trade and get things from weird
places and in ways they did not talk about so dad was given a hootch on land in Nam and that is where he did business.
He got sick and suffered for many years because he was in contact with Agent Orange but the navy says I can't prove he
was on land getting all the goods he could get at all hours of days and nights from things and people that could not be
running all over the ship for lots of reasons. I just need someone to day that they did do it that way. I took care of my
father until he died and he suffered very badly that broke my heart and everyone that he knew he had lost contact with
our they had died. I need some help badly. I guess pictures of my dad there and his word was not good enough. I had
one other letter that my dad stayed on land but because I married that man many years later they discount him also.
Please help me at [email protected]. 256-638-8388. Cell is 256-605-1551 they tell me all my appeals are just about
over so please I need help fast. I know some of you will help me. Diane Ringer

The DANES article is incorrect. We went in and out of the war zone repeatedly just short of the time to get paid combat
pay. It was a deliberate ploy to save money at the expense of morale. We did get the Vietnam Service Medal.
It does not mention participation in Project Uptide which is now declassified but at the time was the most complex series
of ASW exercises and computer evaluated results.Nor does it mention our sortie into the Indian Ocean with a major role
to play during a "Bangladesh Crisis". Do we have the ability to correct DANES and our general public perception?.

My father was on the TICO as a passenger leaving Pearl Harbor 15 Oct, 1945 & arriving at Tacoma, Washington on 22
Oct, 1945 as part of Operation Magic Carpet sailing. I saw a photo @ Ft Ticonderoga showing soldiers sleeping on the
hanger deck of the TICO during an Operation Magic Carpet sailing. I am trying to determine if that photo was from his
sailing. I can email the picture to anybody who thinks they might know anything about it. I would appreciate any help as
my Dad has been dead for several years & I think that he might be in this picture.

My father served on the Ti back in 56-58. His name was Willis B. Jones or "WB Jones as he was known. He
was from West Virginia. He passed away in 2004 but I am his oldest son and I am trying to find anyone
whom may have served with him to gain some information on him. I appreciate anyone whom can help
me out. SFC Rick Jones

My Father, Johnnie McLendon was in the Navy and on the Ticonderoga in 1944. He enlisted the day he
graduated from High School in 1943 but only served 1.5 years before being injured on the Ticonderoga.
I'm trying to learn more about what happened. He said that they were in the midst of the Philippine
Campaign when he and several others were transferring from one ship to another. My dad was crushed
from the waist down but survived. He spent the next 3 years in various Hospitals but then lived to marry
and have 5 children. He passed away in 1985. I'm trying to learn more about exactly what happened. I
don't know if they were transferring the men due to the Typhoon in November 1944 or the kamikaze
attack. Several men died when the ships were pushed together by a huge wave. Someone pulled my dad
back on board. If anyone has info about this, I'd love to hear it.

back in time and relive the grandeur of the Old South when you tour the mansion,
smokehouse, gardens, original slave quarters, and cotton gin house. There will be an
approximate two block walk to the house from where the buses must stop. Level
walking, but please wear comfortable shoes.
$49/Person includes bus, guide, and admission.
Please plan to be at the bus boarding area at least five minutes prior to the scheduled time.
All trips require a minimum of thirty-five people, unless otherwise stated.
We are excited about the Tico Reunion!
If you are planning on attending the reunion in Charleston don't delay in
placing an order for hats, t-shirts, or polo shirts to take along on the trip.
The Tico Store has added a variety of new items for purchase! Visit the
Ships Store section of the association website at www.bigt.net to see our
NEW selection of merchandise that will proudly display your Naval
service.

CV-14 REMEMBERANCES AND OTHER TICO CREW BIOGRAPHIES
This is the subject of the 2014 Reunion in Charleston, SC. We will be publishing a booklet with this title as the gift for those in
attendance. Part of this booklet will be the 96 page TURNER Publishing Co book entitled USS TICONDEROGA CV-CVACVS-14 which was published in 1996. We will be republishing it and allowing new “Letters of Legacy” and Biographies to be
added. Sample descriptions of the attack “Letters of Legacy” are shown on top below with Biographies under them. If you did
not submit one or if your family knows your story and wants to submit they can do so.
WE NEED YOUR BIOGRAPHY FOR THE BOOK!
The other part are Biographies submitted by shipmates. If you want to submit a Biography or an updated Biography we would
love to have it. If you have a picture (or 2{one in uniform and a recent one}) please include them. There is no charge for
including you in the book. The cost will be the purchase of the book after it is done. We hope to keep the charge at $20.00 plus
$5.00 shipping.
PLEASE HURRY - DEADLINE – APRIL 15, 2014!
We would like to get your submissions in a digital format to save us time in putting it into the book. We need to have your
submission by April 15, 2014 in time to get it to the publisher in time to get it published. Submissions can be between 2000 and
4000 characters (letters, spaces and punctuation symbols). When you send your submission please tell us if you are going to the
reunion or are interested in buying the book. We would prefer getting a picture or pictures that do not need to be returned if
you mail them.
Email them to: [email protected] or US Mail to: Gordon Humphrey, 15030 223rd Drive SE, Monroe, WA 98272-9089

Hey Shipmates, Can you spare a …?
In case you haven’t noticed our membership is aging (just a little bit).
Despite some rather heroic efforts (thanks George), we have not lured as
many young, regular dues-paying, members from the Cruiser years as we
would like and a lot of the Carrier guys opted for life membership during
the past 10 years. We think more of the Cruiser crew will come around
in a few years when they get a chance to look up from raising and
supporting young families. I know that’s what happened to me.
Your dues and donations to the General Fund are used to: maintain the website, publish and
mail the newsletter, send out correspondence and acknowledgements, make up membership
cards, pay organization fees, pay for postage/returns, make copies of pertinent documents, and
purchase necessary supplies. Check your Newsletter mailing label, if the year on it is prior
to DEC 31, 2014 your dues are past due, so please catch up! If you are a lifetime member
a small donation would be nice and well appreciated…Thanks!
Reunions are paid for by the attendees. They stand alone and do not dip into dues or general
donations.
We hope you like what has been done with the newsletter and website over the past few years.
We think both are top-notch and just keep improving (thanks Gordon).
Bottom line: Costs keep going up and receipts have leveled and are beginning to drop. So, we
are going to have to find a little help to keep up the quality. (Ready? Here come the Navy
metaphors: Donations of any amount to the General fund will help keep us afloat, in fighting trim,
with everything properly painted and shipshape. We are running a very tight ship but, can’t keep
steaming at this rate much longer without an UNREP.)
We have kept dues at $20 for many years and $100 still buys lifetime membership for older
shipmates (which is rapidly becoming most of us). We want to keep things affordable and will
be discussing options at the annual board meeting in Charleston. But don’t wait, please help if
you can!
OK. Enough of that! Holly and I are looking forward to the May reunion in South Carolina.
What a great location. I don’t know exactly what it is, but we always come away from each
reunion a little sad that it is over and excited that there will be another one in just a year. If you
have never had the opportunity to attend a Tico reunion, we hope you will soon. Remember that
these are family friendly events. Spouses, children, and guests are very welcome. The Association
always tries to make it an entertaining vacation as well as a chance to see old friends and re-live
memories.
Finally, please keep us informed if there are any changes in your address or member
information (mail returns are costly), if you have any contributions of memorabilia for the
association, items we might be able to use in the newsletter or website, and, especially, if you
know of a member’s passing or serious illness.
Thanks,
Dennis

THE CHAPLAIN’S CORNER By
Andrew Jensen, Captain, CHC, USN
In the summer of 1978, I took my sons to a Fleet Reserve Association picnic. My older
son was in high school and my younger son was in junior high school. The special guests
at the picnic were World War I Veterans who were members of the Association. I told
my sons that they might not ever have another chance to meet WW I Veterans because
there were so few of them left at that time. At the picnic, I asked some of the veterans
to share with my sons some of their WWI experiences and their experiences in the
Mediterranean Fleet and the Pacific Fleet following WWI. I was fascinated by the memories of these old
veterans and I know my sons were also, My sons have thanked me many times for that occasion when they
met these veterans. It was not many years after that 1978 event that there were only a small handful of
WWI Veterans and then there were none.
The Big T Reunion this year is dedicating a large portion of the activities to WWII Veterans, so they can
reminisce about their service on the TICONDEROGA during WWII and the time of the ship’s
commissioning. They will give us a touch of history that will never again be available to us. This year’s
reunion is a very special one and one we will not be able to duplicate. I hope you can make it to this special
event.
I look forward to seeing you at the 2014 BigT Reunion at Charleston, NC.
It is with deep sadness that we report the DEATHS of the following shipmates,
friends, and family members:
Peter P Brown – Peter was a life member who died November 9, 2013 at the age of 92 at his residence in
Marshfield Massachusetts. While on the ship during World War II he was a Petty Officer First Class and was
on-board during the Kamikaze attacks. After the war he worked at the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy MA and
later as a carpenter for more than 50 years. Peter was a lifelong member of the VFW. He is survived by his
wife Priscilla (Pat), 4 sons and 1 daughter, 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Allen B Burley – Allen was a member of the Association who died December 2, 2013 in Alexandria Manor,
Nazareth, PA at the age of 97. While on board he was an AM 2/C-T in V-5 Division and served from 19441945. Allen was a “Plank Owner” who was awarded 5 Bronze Stars for acts of heroism and meritorious service
in a combat zone. Allen worked for 40 years as a machinist for Taylor-Wharton before retiring. He was a long
time member of the American Legion and is survived by two sons, 3 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren
Rose Beigh - Rose was the wife of Association member Clyde Beigh. Rose passed away in July 2013.
June Schutte - June was the wife of Harold W Schutte who served aboard the Ticonderoga from 1944-1945.
After Harold’s death in 2004 June continued as an Honorary Member of the Association. June passed away on
December 14, 2013.
Eugene C Ernst – Eugene was a Lifetime Member of the Association who died January 12, 2013 in Syracuse
New York, at the age of 90. While on the ship during World War II he was an RTM 1/C in V-4 Division and was
present during the Kamikaze attacks. After his discharge he graduated from Clarkson College with an electrical
engineering degree and had a 35 year career at General Electric working in Alaska. From there he transferred to
Sacramento California where he married his wife Elda. We were notified by his daughter Sandra who informed
us that: “Eugene attended many of the ‘BigT’ reunions and proudly wore his CV-14 hat wherever he went…and
would always tell his story of the USS Ticonderoga whenever anyone would ask.” A generous donation was
received by the Association from Sandra. Thank you.
