Queen of the North Sea
Welcome to Sylt!
Known for its diverse landscape, culture, sports and entertainment, the island of Sylt is a 100 sq. km haven for cyclists and
convertible drivers, jetsetters and campers, beach lovers and nature explorers. And although the island makes no attempt to
please – its simple diversity means there’s something for everyone.
This creativity and joie de vivre can be seen both in top events and everyday life: fun on the beach or a great sauna in all kinds
of weather, an exciting insight into North Sea life in interactive natural history centres, old churches, captain’s houses and megalithic graves relaying stories of days gone by – embedded in lively idyllic villages with old Frisian houses and blooming gardens.

Island on the horizon
Welcome to Germany’s only offshore island!
‘News of the island of Heligoland reaches me from the West, in terms of its beautiful inorganic an organic nature, consolidated values of prehistoric life, and still fresh evidence of the survival and effect of the eternal world spirit.’ Johann Wolfgang
von Goethe Germany has many islands, but only one offshore island. About 70 km off the mainland, the red sandstone
cliffs, surrounded by green landscape, rise out of the water on the German North Sea coast. Heligoland is renowned for
being a calm oasis and a unique natural monument unlike any other!

Bunker tour
During the Second World War, Heligoland became a maritime fortress. The island was home to antiaircraft positions, an anti-aircraft control tower and observation posts as well as other small protective
buildings. There was even a U-boat pen. A civilian air-raid shelter, created by an extended air-raid protection tunnel system, was connected to a large room. Today, expert guides take you on a tour of the
bunker, giving you an insight into the island’s history as a fortress.

The little island of great freedom
Welcome to Amrum!
‘Experience nature’ is the credo of around 200,000 year-round visitors to the little island of great freedom. Approximately
30 sq. km of tidal flats, woodlands, moorlands and an impressive chain of dunes link five tranquil island villages with Amrum’s
unique ‘Kniepsand’ beach. At 10 sq. km long, it is the biggest and finest sandbank in Europe and not only a sight for sore eyes,
but also a haven for beach lovers.
Frisian culture and tradition are a constant companion on Amrum.

In the living quarters of the historical 1736 Frisian house, you can see the kitchen, sitting room and
so-called ‘best room’ – a reception room reserved for special occasions. This used to be heated by a

Biikebrennen
The Biikebrennen (from the Frisian Biike, meaning huge piles of wood) is a traditional folk festival in
North Frisia in Schleswig-Holstein, celebrated on 21 February (Saint Peter’s) instead of the widespread
Easter bonfire. Biike continues to be an important holiday – especially on the North Frisian islands and
Halligen.
Each village community and many farmsteads have their own bonfires, around which they partake in
festive activities such as singing or acting. A variety of additional traditions have emerged on the islands
of Föhr, Amrum and Sylt, such as destroying neighbouring villages’ fires.

Whales, Wadden Sea and World Natural Heritage
How big is a sperm whale? How small is seahorse? Does a lumpsucker suck lumps? Why are sturgeons extinct? You‘ll find
the answers to all these questions about the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park at Multimar Wattforum Centre.
Let us introduce you to the fascinating underwater world of Germany‘s largest World Natural Heritage Site Wadden Sea.
You can see numerous creatures from the Wadden Sea in Multimar‘s 36 big aquariums – in all, more than 280 different
species of fish, crustaceans, mussels and snails. While sturgeon, thornback ray and cat sharks majestically swim by,
lobsters prefer to hide away in caves and seahorses among the algae. We also invite you to immerse yourself in the world
of whales and look a sperm whale in the eye. This sperm whale, an 18-metre-long bull, was found stranded in the mud
flats a few years ago. Around the sperm whale there are ten chambers with information about porpoises. These small
relatives of the sperm whale are of a more human size – 1.8 metres long.
