Internationally Acclaimed Artist Nancy Noel Holds Fund Raiser for
Home News Winter 2013 a publication of Indiana United Methodist Children’s Home, Inc. Leading the Way in Indiana with the Teaching Family Model Internationally Acclaimed Artist Nancy Noel Holds Fund Raiser for Children’s Home Vicki Gans, Elletsville, is a former resident of the Home and attended Masquerade on Main. “I love the Home and Nancy Noel inspires me. That’s why I came to the party,” she added. As you can see, Vicki came dressed as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz and brought Toto, too! Toto is actually her beloved dog named Fiona! We are very proud of Vicki. The second annual “Masquerade on Main” was held on October 26 at Nancy Noel’s gallery and restaurant in Zionsville. A portion of the proceeds benefited the Home, thanks to Nancy’s passion for helping children. More than 125 people were in attendance and costumes ranged from Wizard of Oz characters to British royalty. According to Rich Lapinski, Executive Director, “We were truly honored that Nancy came to our campus and became so interested in helping the youth. She genuinely cares about the well being of the boys and girls we serve. We are very appreciative to Nancy and her wonderful staff for putting on such a great event.” Not only does Nancy have an interest in helping the Home, but she supports the N.A. Noel Preschool on the island of Rusinga in Kenya. Here’s an idea for a great day. Come and tour Indiana United Methodist Children’s Home and then drive a short distance to Nancy’s studio in Zionsville called The Sanctuary. While visiting the gallery, you can also have a delicious lunch in her restaurant called, Colours, located at 75 North Main Street. The Home is grateful to artist and philanthropist Nancy Noel for sponsoring Masquerade on Main. Pictured in their Halloween costumes are: Rich Lapinski, the Home’s Executive Director; Sherman Burdette, Fox 59 Reporter; Janelle Morrison, MADD Media Solutions and Nancy Noel with her little dog, Matisse, a.k.a. Maddie. Indiana United Methodist Children’s Home has a fascinating history. Over the next several months, we will be featuring vignettes and photos about our earliest days as an orphanage. A written history by B.D. Beck references October 19, 1915, as the date where 46 orphans moved into a Victorian home in Greencastle, Indiana. This began the Indiana Methodist Episcopal Children’s Home. In 1924, the Home outgrew the Greencastle facility and relocated to Lebanon. This historical picture was taken on August 28, 1924 and features the children on their very first day in Lebanon. As you can see, they were allowed to bring their beloved dog, Laddie. Located on the original 17 acres, the Home is one of the oldest youth agencies in Indiana. If you would like to learn more about our history and services to youth, please contact Susan Bennett, Director of Public Relations at 765-482-5900 or send e-mail inquiries to [email protected] Why is Patricia Smiling? Patricia is smiling for several reasons. First and foremost, she successfully completed the treatment program at Indiana United Methodist Children’s Home and is on her way to Austin, Texas to become an office manager. She also reached a very important goal. Patricia recently received her first driver’s license. And, thanks to the Home’s successful vehicle donation program, the Home was able to give Patricia her first car. Patricia feels good about her new independence. She said, “I have a good feeling about my life now. I can’t wait to see what’s ahead for me in Texas. I would like to say thank you to the Home’s caring staff and to the nice people who donate their cars.” Patricia is all smiles as she receives the keys to her first car. Rich Lapinski, Amy Davis and Bud Milner congratulate Patricia on her many accomplishments. Meet the Home’s Teaching Staff One of the greatest assets at the Home is the on-grounds school. According to Principal Jim Stuart, “This is one of the best starts of a school year that we have ever had at the school. I am very proud of our students and dedicated teachers.” The 2012-2013 school staff include (first row, left to right): Angie Brown, Dean of Students; Manelle Spidel, Dean of Students Assistant; Christina Darnell, educational volunteer and Kelli McQueen, teacher. Second row: Jim Stuart, Principal, Scott Carlisle, Jamie Hamman, Andrew Fischer and Jackie Morris, all on the teaching staff. Here’s a thought…. Your will can be a testimony to your faith. Teaching Family Assistants Earn Professional Certification Congratulations to Dwayne Voth and Stacy Youngblood! They recently earned their Professional Certification in the Teaching Family Model. Both have done an outstanding job working with our girls and boys in the Teaching Family Model. The model is evidence based and teaches youth social, academic and independent living skills. Family Teachers model Christian, family and personal values in a home-like environment. Three New Levels of Giving Added to Auxiliary Membership Indiana United Methodist Children’s Home is fortunate to have an active Auxiliary. Today, hundreds of individuals from across the state make up the Auxiliary. Auxiliary members also help interpret the Home’s mission to churches in their local area. This past October, the Auxiliary Executive Committee voted to establish three more levels of giving. We hope you will prayerfully consider one of these new ways of giving. Angel. . . . . . . . . . . . . $1,000 Lifetime *Apostle . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $500 Yearly *Servant . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $250 Yearly *Disciple. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $100 Yearly Ambassador. . . . . . . . . . . . $50 Yearly Advocate. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $25 Yearly Partner . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $10 Yearly Friend. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $5 Yearly *Denotes new level Pictured from left to right are: Rich Lapinski, Executive Director/CEO; Dwayne Voth, Family Teaching Assistant; Stacy Youngblood, Family Teaching Assistant; Michelle Lahnen, Residential Supervisor; Amy Davis, Evaluator/Trainer/ Child Right’s Officer; Cristy Schlientz, President of Innovative Teaching Systems and Bud Milner, Director of Residential Services. Auxiliary members from across the state care deeply about the youth at the Home. We hope you will join the Auxiliary and ask your friends and family to become members, too. Our goal is to have members in every county in Indiana. We still have 40 more counties to go. With the addition of different levels of giving, the Auxiliary has been able to raise more funding for projects. Auxiliary gifts typically help fund the following projects that directly benefit the boys and girls: flu inoculations, orthodontia needs, transportation for home visits, school portraits, educational supplies, recreational equipment, vehicle replacements and furnishings for the new Teaching Family homes. During 2013, the Auxiliary helped purchase four comfortable rocking chairs for each home. According to therapist Jeanne Myers, “Many of our youth were never rocked as babies and even as teenagers, rocking in a chair can be very self soothing and calming. These chairs will be very therapeutic for our youth.” Joining the Auxiliary at any level is easy to do. Simply send a note to Indiana United Methodist Children’s Home along with your gift. Please make sure to include your name, address and phone number on the correspondence. Thank you for your continued interest in the boys and girls at Indiana United Methodist Children’s Home. Bennett, MA Director of Public Relations Board of Trustees Stuart Buttrick, Carmel Lewis Davis, Zionsville Jim Engledow, Carmel IRA Charitable Rollover Back Again Taxpayers may use IRA funds to make gifts to charity without having those funds treated as taxable distributions for federal income-tax purposes provided they comply with certain requirements: • The taxpayer is age 70½ or older at the time of the gift. • The transfer is made directly from the IRA account to charity by the IRA custodian or trustee. • The account holder cannot receive any continuing interest in or benefit from the funds – that is, they cannot be used for gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, or other kinds of “life income” gifts. One of the best benefits of this provision is that qualifying distributions can count toward the taxpayer’s required minimum distribution (RMD) for the year. Please check with your financial advisor before making any decisions.
