Rural Management and Development Department, Government of Sikkim 3 Village Development Action Plan – Tathangchen Syari GPU Chapter 1: General and basic information Tool 1: TRANSECT WALK Number of participants: 12 male: 7 female: 5 Description: The transect walk is a tool to discuss information related to land use of the village. Transects are done with structured walks through typical village landscape. Such walks can cover part of the village or the entire village, taking an hour or up to some hours. Transects consist of two elements: the walk and a diagram that records the information of the walks. Objectives: Identify typical land use types and their characteristics. With whom: Mixed group of farmers (female and male) Step 1: Assess current situation Parameter Lower belt Soil Sandy, chimtey soil Elevation (feet) 1000 ft Average land holding (acre) 200 acre Farming system Traditional Main crops Paddy, maize, ginger Average livestock holding 2 acre Fallow land (land left uncultivated) 40 acre Others … -- Best practices, Potentials Paddy Main problems / constraints Irrigation low Middle belt Black soil 2000 ft 200 acre Traditional Orange, ginger, pulses 4 acre Upper belt Black soil 3000 ft 200 acre Traditional orange, ginger 5 acre 30 acre 30 acre -Orange Irrigation low -Cardamom Irrigation low Rural Management and Development Department, Government of Sikkim 4 Village Development Action Plan – Tathangchen Syari GPU Step 2: Figure out best practices, success stories, important problems and their causes Best practices, Land use Type Main problems Causes Success stories Agriculture Maize Low production Irrigation Agriculture paddy Low production Irrigation Step 3: Find out solutions for the problems Solutions Water to be provided. It also helps villagers of the community to be aware of their effort passing each period of their recent history. Draw a line on A0 paper. One end of the line will be „now‟. Explain to the households that this is the History Line Ask the households to recall key events (positive and negative) throughout history (from the earliest to now) and the year they occurred. The primary concern is not to develop an accurate map but to get useful information about local perceptions of resources. The VDAP members should further develop and detail the content of the map according to what is important to them. Objectives: To learn the villagers' perception of what natural resources are found in the community and how they are used. With whom: Female and male focus groups Step 1: Assess current situation What resources are abundant? (potential) What resources are scarce? (constraints) Does everyone have equal access to land? Do women have access to land? What is the quantum of fallow land (land left uncultivated) Do the poor have access to land? Where do people go to collect water? Who collects water? Where do people go to collect firewood? Who collects firewood? Where do people go to graze livestock? What kind of development activities do you carry out as a whole community? Step 2: Find out three most important problems and their causes Problems Water scarcity in the village after the roads being constructed carelessly. Fodder for the cattle is not enough Causes Due to the construction of roads the water sources gets buried under the mud and debris making the water sources dried up.
