2015 Montgomery County 4-H Fair Scrapbook
A week at the Montgomery County 4-H Fair was good medicine
This
year’s
Montgomery
County 4-H Fair was like a
homecoming experience for this
writer.
I was totally absent from the
2014 fair, due to a heart complication that kept me at home.
And, because I had not attended a fair since 2013, this
year’s fair was a dose of good
medicine.
That’s what a 4-H fair can do
for a person’s heart and soul.
Perhaps it’s just the hot-summer weather, but it’s obvious
that personalities and opinions
on a myriad of local issues have
been heated — sometimes to
the point where friendships are
frayed.
The 4-H fair
put that local banter in
perspective.
The
hot-under-the-collar
ANDY
conversations
TAYLOR
are small compared to the
much-greater
experience of what 4-H families
do for themselves and others.
In attending each night’s
events, I never heard political
rancor, debates about old stadiums, arguments about presidential candidates, or talks that denigrated others. Instead, I heard
people speak in uplifting terms.
“Good job,” “Way to go,” “Congratulations,” “I knew you could
do it” were often heard. And, I
saw those words put to action.
Here’s what I observed:
• kids and their parents were
sweat-stained shirts, an obvious
testament not just to Mother Nature’s wrath but also to perspiration exerted during their hard
work.
• parents’ vehicles, caked in
dust and mud, that are in dire
need of a deep scrubbing. However, that need for clean chrome
has been delayed as moms and
dads transport kids from their
homes and farms to the fair
buildings.
• 4-H kids who, despite the
hottest week thus far in the 2015
season, wiped the sweat from
their brows and volunteered for
duty in the non-air-conditioned
concession stand.
• 4-H exhibitors who answered questions about their
projects — and sought ideas
from others by browsing the
hundreds of exhibits on display.
• families who likely could
have been on a vacation during
the last week of July but chose,
instead, to delay their journeys
so they can participate in a week
of fair activities.
• adults and kids who spoke
not only of their participation
in the 4-H fair but also of their
involvement in other activities.
Ask most of the 4-H families and
they’ll likely rattle off a list of
other community endeavors that
see copious amounts of their gracious time: church youth groups,
recreation teams, cheerleading
and dance teams, civic clubs,
and even 4-H programs in other
counties.
When the
beef
show
ended shortly
before
11:45
p.m., Sunday,
July 26, cattle
exhibitors took
their projects
to their stalls
(making sure feed and water
buckets were full), stumbled to
the showers after 12:30 a.m.,
and finally went to bed after 1
a.m. In one particular case, I
know of a 4-H family that arose
at 6 a.m., Monday morning to
attend a 4-H fair in Fredonia —
just so they could support their
friends and fellow family members in adjoining counties. That’s
dedication, folks.
So, from my perspective, immersing myself in multiple days
and nights of 4-H fair activities
did a great deal to right my ship .
. . and see that most of the banter
I hear the other 51 weeks of the
year is nothing more than hollow and shallow talk. I’d rather
witness a 10-year-old kid and his
or her parents who are unafraid
to pick up a stall rake on a moment’s notice and put it to work,
fill their lungs with the “fresh”
smell of livestock, put in a 20hour day, give up comfort for
a full week, subject their family meals to a few moments of
carry-out pizza while sitting on
hay bales next to their livestock
projects, and, of course, learning
about responsibility and care as
they undertake their projects. I’ll
remember those 4-H kids when
they are adults — knowing full
well that they have been fully
prepared to raise another generation of children who know the
virtues of hard work and family
values.
That, dear friends, makes my
heart feel much better.
*****
As mentioned earlier, I was
convalescing during last year’s
fair after a heart scare (no need
to worry, folks, the ticker’s in
good shape today).
However, last year’s photography and fair coverage was handled by one-time 4-H member
and now University of Kansas
student Beth Fentress of rural
Havana. She handled those duties masterfully.
Her mother, Cheryl, is the superintendent of the 4-H fair rabbit competition. Cheryl informed
me that Beth is spending this
summer in Beijing, China, on a
fast-paced, eight-week language
expedition in the Far East.
Making the jump from Havana
to Beijing is like taking the jump
from earth to the moon.
Beth totally amazed me when
she “filled in” for my absence last
summer. I fully expect Beth to do
great things in the near future
— be it in China or in the United
States.
*****
A heaping dose of congraulations goes to the Montgomery
County 4-H Foundation, which
partnered with Quality Motors
of Independence in sponsoring a
test drive vehicle fundraiser.
Ford Motor Company’s Drive 4
UR Community event saw more
than 300 local people test drive
one of five Ford vehicles. Ford
Motor Company, through its local dealer Quality Motors, contributed $20 for every test drive
experience — up to a maxiumum
of $6,000.
The foundation was able to
round up more than enough test
drivers — more than 300 participated. That means the foundation will pocket the $6,000,
which will go toward 4-H scholarships and other 4-H activities.
Livestock auction yields $51,650 in proceeds
INDEPENDENCE — At the
Montgomery County 4-H Fair
Livestock Premium Sale on July
27, a total of 89 animals were
sold with total sale proceeds of
$51,650. The premium sale is
the final event of the annual 4-H
fair, which was held at Riverside
Park.
The grand champion market steer was sold by McKenna
Little, Coffeyville, and purchased
by Hinkle Mowing of Copan for
$2,500. The champion middleweight
market lamb was sold by Easton
Ewing of Liberty and purchased
by Quality Toyota and Quality Motors of Independence for
$2,000. Caitlynn Stevenson, Niotaze,
exhibited the grand champion
market meat goat, which was
purchased by First Oak Bank of
Independence for $1,100. The champion middleweight
market hog owned by Rhett
Newby, Coffeyville, and purchased by Coffeyville Feed &
Farm, Community National
Bank, and Dollar Tire of Coffeyville for $1,400.
There were 20 steers sold
with an average sale price of
$700, seven lambs sold with an
average sale price of $425, 25
goats sold with an average sale
price of $415, and 37 hogs sold
with an average sale price of
$520.
Total add-on dollars have not
yet been finalized. Preliminary
add-ons amount to $12,415.
In 2014, the sale total was
$32,975 with $17,525 in addons for total sale proceeds of
$50,500.
Jack Daniels (left) and Stan Gartner accepted bids from buyers at the Montgomery County 4-H Fair Livestock Premium Sale on Monday, July 27 in Independence. Kevin Lay (standing at podium) and David Alexander (not pictured) were the auctioneers for the sale, which saw a total of 89 animals put on the auction
block, generating $51,650 in sale proceeds. (Photo by Andy Taylor)

The sound of each page turning in this Montgomery County 4-H Fair
Scrapbook carries the same tone as clapping hands. There’s good reason
for that: the 4-H fair exhibitors, adult volunteers and boosters deserve a
round of applause. That’s why we produced this special issue. It’s our way
of delivering applause to a great activity in Montgomery County.
Keep turning the pages . . . and keep up the applause!
