Ehrenamt in schools
How does volunteer work benefit me?
If you volunteer in school, you help other people.
Volunteer work also gives you many benefits.
The main advantages are:
✹ You get a lot of information about the school.
✹ Therefore, you can help your child with problems
better.
✹ Your interests and wishes are heard more quickly.
✹ You meet new people such as other parents or teachers.
✹ You can share your knowledge with other people.
✹ Your success encourages children, teenagers and
other parents.
Will I get help with volunteering?
You are not alone – the employees of the Fachbereich
Bildung (Education Office) of the City of Mannheim will
help you.
The office will help you by giving you the chance to:
✹ meet other parents who volunteer in schools.
✹ get the latest information on schools, education and
other topics.
✹ participate in further education courses.
Do you have any further
questions?

Mr Schäfer of the Fachbereich Bildung (Education

Dear parents,
Do you want to actively participate in school?
Then volunteer work is the right thing for you!
Here you will find answers
to your questions.
What is volunteer work?
»Who climbs a good tree, deserves a push.« (ghanaian wisdom)
More metaphorically, it means that when you work for a good
cause, you will get support.
Volunteer work is voluntary social
work.
Volunteers are working for a good cause.
You will not be paid for volunteering – however, the
work is interesting, important and helps other people.

✹ At the school, you can also volunteer as a parent
representative.
How can I actively support parents,
pupils and students?
What is a study group?
Please consider:
✹ What things are you good at?
✹ What are you interested in?
There are, for example, study groups for maths, sport,
theatre – but many more subjects too. At the school,
leading a study group is something to offer to students.
You can do the following:
What are Project Days?
Help other parents:
✹ Some parents do not know the German school system
well.
✹ Some parents do not know the school well.
✹ Some parents do not want to talk alone with the
teachers.
✹ Some parents need advice for various problems.
✹ Some parents do not speak German well and need
help with translation.
During project days, the school offers special classes.
Pupils and students work on various projects. At the
end, they show the results of their work.
Help other pupils and students with school work by:
Practising reading skills
Doing homework together
Studying for tests
Studying for exams
Advise pupils when they are looking for a secondary
school.
✹ Find an internship or trainee position together with
students.
✹ Offer a study group or help others create one.
✹ Offer interesting topics for Project Days or help
others do so.
✹

What are parent representatives?
Parent representatives work for the interests of parents, pupils and students. Parents in each class select
a parent representative, who then speaks for all of
the parents in it.
Parent representatives are important so that school
and parents work well together.
Would you like to do one or more of
these things?
Then talk with
