JACKPOT
In our lottery and sweepstakesobsessed culture, it is common to
ask ourselves or others what they
would do if they won. In today’s
first reading, Solomon certainly
hits the jackpot. What prize could
be greater than having God
Almighty agree to give you
whatever you ask for? Out of all
the things he could have asked for, Solomon chose to ask for
understanding, and was rewarded with it. We would do well to wonder
what we would ask for if God made us the same offer. Actually God
does make us the same offer each and every day, by granting us
another day of life, a bit of the earth’s goods, some gift or ability, some
call to goodness, some portion of the divine will. Each of these is a
“prize.” We should stop and examine what we are going to do with our
prize: keep it or use it selfishly, or put it at the service of the spread of
the gospel?

A Word from Fr. Ray
Una Palabra de P. Ray
Please be advised in your efforts to keep
our parking lot safer by not leaving
valuables inside your vehicles. Keep your
belongings in the trunk or covered in some
way as to not open an invitation to violate
your property as well as the property of
the church. It is also advised that you not
park your cars on the streets, as Torrey
Pines Road does not have parking
privileges with the city and is therefore
designated as a no parking zone. Metro is
on a regular rotation and will ticket
vehicles parked on Torrey Pines Road.
Por favor, hagan el esfuerzos por
mantener el estacionamiento más
seguro al no dejar objetos de valor
dentro de sus vehículos. Mantenga sus
pertenencias en el baúl o cubierto de
alguna manera, para no abrir una
invitación a violar su propiedad, así
como la propiedad de la iglesia.
También se aconseja que no estacione
sus coches en las calles, de Torrey
Pines Road. No tenemos privilegios de
estacionamiento con la ciudad y, por
tanto, no ha sido designada como una
zona de estacionamiento. Metro se
encuentra en una rotación regular y
vehículos estacionados en Torrey Pines
Road recibirán una infracción.

BECOME A MEMBER OF
NEVADANS FOR THE COMMON GOOD
HERE AT CHRIST THE KING
Nevadans for the Common Good is a
“voice for the voiceless” in Las Vegas. As
Christians, we are called to embrace the
problems that face our local community.
We can do this individually, working with
our neighbors, or also, we can act as the
body of Christ, working towards more just
policies on the issues of the vulnerable
around us: i.e. the elderly, immigration
and integration, human trafficking, public
education, health care, and
neighborhood blight.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS
By the dawn of the fourteenth century, the
sacrament of confirmation was ripe for a rescue,
since vast numbers of the faithful never received it,
and when it was celebrated, it was done so in
isolation from baptism and Eucharist. A bishop
named William Durandus set out to reclaim this
liturgy, but he had a creative touch and added some
things into the mix that had never been thought of
before. One was a slap. Oddly, he replaced the kiss
of peace at the end of confirmation with a slap on
the cheek that endured to modern times. This
“wakeup call” was related in his imagination to a
custom in the military, wherein ceremonies of
knighthood and investiture involved a symbolic
wound as a sign of willingness to suffer. Within
every congregation today there are people who
have memories of fretting through their confirmation
liturgies, anxious to know how enthusiastic a slap
the bishop would bestow. Durandus loved
symbolism and had a reason for every ritual and
practice, but his creative spin on the celebration
shows how sadly adrift confirmation was from its
anchorage in baptism, how far off-course from its
home port of the Eucharistic community.

Poco a poco

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD
REFLEXIONEMOS SOBRE LA PALABRA DE DIOS
In his book Live and Learn and Pass It On,
H. Jackson Brown, Jr. has published some
lists of the lessons that people have learned
in life. These contain one-liners that capture
the wisdom gained by youngsters and
oldsters through their everyday adventures.
Clearly these sayings give expression to the
voice of experience. So why does it take so
long to come upon such wisdom? Why can’t it
be issued t o us when we’re born? It would
be so much easier. But that’s not how it
happens. The wisdom has to find us. The
reign of God, too, seems to find us rather than
the other way around. At least that’s what the
Gospel this Sunday seems to suggest when it
compares the reign of God to a treasure
found buried in a field. Treasures tend to find
us, sometimes even when we’re actually
searching for them, as in the Gospel’s tale of
the fine pearl. That’s why Solomon needed to
lean on God for some wisdom, because he
couldn’t come to it on his own. It’s also why
parents can’t make their children believers,
because faith finds us. In fact, some folks
would suggest that most of the really valuable
things we wait for are all part and parcel of
God’s reign, things like love or wisdom or the
joy that comes with the perfect job or the child
you’ve been waiting for. In one way or
another, God’s reign finds us.
En su libro Live and Learn and Pass It On
tienden a encontrarnos a nosotros y a veces
