initiatives within JEC to promote and increase
awareness of environmental protection. JEC
have been very active in educating our own
people with this important concept. Our commitment to date includes organising the JEC
Clean Air Campaign Awards, implementing our
Environmental Management System, publishing JEC’s first Environmental Report and our
Green Calendar, plus selling environmentally
friendly products and equipment to our customers. We must all realise that every action helps,
so I encourage everyone to actively support and
make your own commitment and contribution
to environmental protection. More ideas can

In this issue of the JEC Magazine, we
maintain our focus on the environment and the products and solutions
to support our customers’ increasing
understanding of the benefits of developing their projects and conducting their
business in a more sustainable manner.
This issue includes a feature on scaleable, renewable and sustainable energy
solutions for commercial and industrial
applications that provide local energy
and emission reductions and contribute
towards the global challenge of climate
change. These solutions range from energy efficient, nanotechnology-empowered products that improve indoor air
quality, to building integrated photovoltaic panels (BIPV) solar LED lighting, micro wind turbine generator systems, and
waste-to-energy lean-burn gas engine
genset systems, which have applications
in Hong Kong, the Pearl River Delta and
throughout the markets in Asia.

In January 2007, JEC also held our
latest Group Briefing, attended by over
a hundred senior management professionals and JEC Clean Air Campaign
awards’ winners. We shared the lessons
learnt from last year and looked ahead
to 2007 and beyond. This included
consolidating on the gains made to date,
improving our efficiencies still further,
remaining adaptable to the changing
market needs and continuing the growth
of our business in the markets where we
choose to operate. Our commitments to
improving customer satisfaction levels
for our products and services remain undiminished as we seek further improvements in this area year on year.
We also share our philanthropic activities, with Jardine Distribution Inc
assisting with the recovery of typhoondamaged farms in the Philippines, to
JEC spending a day facilitating a fire drill
in the villages of Lei Yue Mun in Hong
Kong. I am also pleased to announce
that JEC has been recognised by the
Hong Kong Council of Social Service by
the award of the Caring Company Logo
for the year 2006/07.
Finally, I would like to reiterate that JEC’s
employees are critically important to the
growth of the company and differentiate
us from our competitors. JEC is continuing our emphasis on training and development of the people who work with us
through the apprentice and vocational
training schemes in which we are placing
more investments, through our graduate
training schemes and for our more seasoned people through identifying their
requirements as part of their individual
development programmes.

本期怡和機器雜誌的話題集中於環境、產
品及解決方案；該些話題能促進我們的客
戶更加了解對發展他們的工程計劃的優點
及採用可持續發展的方法來營運業務的優
點。本期包括一篇特寫文章，記述可應用
於工商業的可擴充、可再生及可持續發展
的能源解決方案。該些解決方案可於當地
提供能源、減低廢氣排放及對全球氣候轉
變的挑戰作出貢獻；其中包括具能源效益
及應用納米技術的可改善室內空氣質素
的產品、BIPV（建築物一體化光伏電池系
統）太陽能LED照明系統、小型風力渦輪
發電系統、用廢棄物作燃料的混合燃料燃

採用。
怡和機器於2007年1月舉行了最近期的集
團簡佈會，有超過一百位高級管理專業人
員及怡和機器清新空氣運動大獎的得獎者
出席。我們分享了在去年獲得的寶貴經驗
及對2007年和以後的展望。簡佈會內容
包括總結以往至目前的經驗、改進效率、
繼續適應幻變的市場需要及繼續促進我們
公司的市場的業務增長。增進客戶對公司
產品及服務的滿意度是我們始終如一的不
變承諾；對此，我們年復一年地不斷作出
改進。
我們也參與慈善公益活動：Jardine
Distribution Inc協助重修在菲律賓被台風
損毀的農場；怡和機器亦協助香港鯉魚
門村落進行防火演習。香港社會服務聯
會對怡和機器的認同並於2006/07年度頒
予“商界展關懷”標誌，本人對此深感
欣喜。
最後，本人想重申，怡和機器的員工對公
司的成長至關重要，並使公司優於其他競
爭對手。怡和機器對人材培訓及發展的重
視從未間斷，透過學徒、職業訓練計劃及
畢業生培訓計劃，以及對具豐富經驗的人
材，公司會配合他們的需要作為他們個人
發展計劃的一部份。

JEC Signs Contract with Hongkong Land for works
at One and Two Exchange Square, Hong Kong
與香港置地簽署交易廣場1期和2期的更換變風量
空調箱工程合約
On 13 March, 2007, JEC signed a contract with Hongkong Land for the
replacement contract of Variable Air Volume (VAV) Terminal Units at One
and Two Exchange Square, in Central, Hong Kong. The works began
in December last year and will take three years to complete. Mr James
Graham, Chief Executive of JEC, remarked at the signing ceremony, “The
JEC project team is fully equipped to tackle this challenge and ensure the
works will not only run smoothly, but also will meet and exceed our client’s
expectations.” JEC will take care to avoid any interruption and to minimise
any impact on the business operations of the tenants in Exchange Square
One and Two, and the replacement works are required to be conducted
only outside working hours.
怡和機器於2007年3月13日與香港置地簽署工程合約，更換交易廣場1及2期
的變風量空調箱。該工程已於去年12月開始，需時3年完成。怡和機器行政
總裁關正仕先生於簽約儀式上道：“為了避免造成任何滋擾及減低對交易
廣場1期和2期租戶的業務所造成的影響，更換工程只會於非工作時間才進
行。怡和機器的工程隊伍裝備齊全，足以應付此項工程的挑戰，並會確保工
程不但能順利進行，更會滿足及超越客戶的期望。”

怡和機器銷售人員週年會議
Over 100 JEC Sales & Marketing professionals, including JEC Senior
Management and representatives from JEC regional offices (Thailand, The
Philippines, Singapore, Macau and China), participated in the annual JEC
Sales Conference held on 15 March, 2007 at Hongkong Parkview. During
the whole day conference, the participants were given updates and ideas on
sales knowledge, sales tools and different approaches to selling plus training on JEC’s customer value proposition to drive sales growth.
超過100位怡和機器的銷售及市場推廣人員出席了於2007年3月15日假香港陽
明山莊舉行的怡和機器銷售人員週年會議，出席人員包括從泰國、菲律賓、
新加坡、澳門及中國等地區的怡和機器區域辨事處的高級管理人員及代表。

Congratulations to Mr Raymond Lin, Operations
Director of Building Equipment and Products,
on his second consecutive re-appointment as a
member of the Electrical & Mechanical Services
Industry Training Advisory Committee (ITAC) for a
period of two years with effect from January 2007.
The ITAC is the key conduit of advice and information between the Government and the industry
in implementing the Qualifications Framework in
the industry.
Besides ITAC, Mr Lin has also been appointed
as a member of the Contractors’ Registration
Committee Panel and as an alternate member
of the Contractors’ Registration Committee for a
period of two years commencing January 2007.
The Committee will assist the Building Authority in considering applications in connection with
general contractors and specialist contractors.
Last but not least, Mr Lin has also become the
Honorary Life President of the Hong Kong Air
Conditioning & Refrigeration Association Ltd.
(ACRA) JEC would like to thank Raymond sincerely for the great effort and contribution in the
industry!
謹恭賀屋宇設備及產品部業務董事連金水先生第
二次獲得重新委任為機電業行業培訓諮詢委員
(ITAC) 會員，為期兩年，由2007年1月起生效。
ITAC是政府與工業界在業界內實施資歷架構的主
要諮詢和資訊渠道。
除了ITAC外，連先生亦被委任為承建商註冊事務
委員會委員團的會員，以及承建商註冊事務委員會
的替代會員，為期兩年，由2007年1月起生效。該
委員會將會協助屋宇署考慮有關一般承建商和特別
承建商的申請。
最後，連先生亦成為香港空調及冷凍商會的終身榮
謦主席。怡和機器謹真誠感謝Raymond在業界的
重大努力和貢獻！

On 2 February 2007, JEC’s project team won
the “Meritorious Award” of the E&M Contracts
category from the Drainage Services Department Construction Sites Housekeeping Award
Scheme (2006) Award Presentation Ceremony.
JEC supplied and installed E&M equipment
for the improvement works of existing primary
sedimentation tanks at the Shatin Sewage
Treatment Work Stage II. JEC has received
this award from the Government for the third
consecutive year and will continue to maintain
clean, safe, and environmentally friendly construction sites on all our assignments.
2007年2月2日，怡和機器的項目團隊 (project
team) 在2006年渠務署工地整潔獎勵計劃的的
頒獎典禮上贏得機電合約類別的優異獎。怡和
機器向沙田污水處理廠第二期的現有初級沉積
水箱的改善工程提供和安裝機電設備。怡和機
器經己連續第三年從政府方面獲得這項獎狀，
並且將會在我們所有的合約工程中繼續維持清
潔、安全和環保的工地。

Many JEC superstars were spotted at the JEC
Spring Dinner 2007 held at the Grand Hall of the
Hong Kong Exhibition and Convention Centre on
16 March, 2007. It was a fun-filled evening with
spectacular performances by JEC staff and great
prizes for everyone to take home.
During the dinner, Mr James Graham, Chief
Executive of JEC, presented the “Business
Partner of the Year 2006” awards to Cummins
Power Generation, Milliken Carpet, Ingersoll
Rand, Trend Controls, SPX Technologies and
Garaventa Accessibility, to
show JEC’s appreciation of
their great support over the past
year. Mr Graham also thanked
JEC staff for our hard work,
professionalism and innovation
in bringing together a strong
team that would continue to meet
the challenges ahead.

JTS Philippines Office Undergoes Makeover!
JTS 菲律賓辦公室翻新打扮！
Held in late 2006, the best
site office competition in Jardine Technical Services(JTS)
Philippines, a JEC fully
owned business unit, was
won by the “Tollways” team
led by Foreman Jojo Baligod.
The contest launched in mid2006 and received many applicants, vying to take part in
the enhancement of the JTS
image, whilst keeping in mind
JEC corporate guidelines.
The JTS image upgrade consists
of a three-stage process, with priority given to frontline staff. The
overall strategy to the upgrade is
to become the best JTS can be
in its field in the Philippines by
the end of 2007.
Stage 1 will see the upgrading
of the site offices, technicians’
uniforms, and vehicles. This aims
to ensure that customers visualises the difference first and JTS
technicians see tangible proof of
their importance.
Stage 2 will see the upgrading of
the head office’s, supervisors’, and
sales engineers’ uniforms. It is important to show
customers, suppliers, and employees the new
and revamped identity to increase their brand
understanding and confidence in the JTS brand.
Stage 3 will continually reinforce this message
with contests and inspections to ensure that the
change is permanent and consistent. The best
site office competition was an integral part of this
and judged on 3 criteria:
1. Adherence to JTS’ upgraded image – use of
JEC branded items

2. Innovation and imagination
3. Overall impression – organisation, tidiness
and professionalism
The “Tollways” team demonstrated all of the
above and were well prepared and highly professional in both within their office and with their
clients. Overall, the image upgrade has sent a
positive signal to the whole of JTS of professional standards and the determination to move
forward.
怡和機器的全資公司菲律賓怡和技術服務（JTS）
的最隹工地辦公室比賽由科文Jojo Baligod領導的
「Tollways」團隊贏得。這個比賽在2006年後期
舉行，收到很多參賽者，競逐參與提升JTS的形
象，而同時緊記怡和機器的企業指引。
JTS的形象提升包括三個階段，優先考慮是前線職
員。提升的整體策略是在2007年底前在菲律賓同
業中成為最好的JTS。
第一階段將會提升工地辦公室、技術員制服及車
輛。目的是要確保客戶馬上看得到分別，而JTS技
術員見到他們重要性的真正証據。
第二階段將會提升總部職員、監督員及銷售工程
師的制服。向客戶、供應商和職員顯示嶄新和改
造的形象很重要，因為能夠增加它們對JTS品牌的
了解和信心。
第三階段將會繼續通過比賽和巡查來加強這個訊
息，以確保這個改變是永久和一致的。最隹的工
地辨公室比賽是這方面的一個組成部份，並以3個
條件評核：
1. 遵守JTS已提升的形象 – 使用怡和機器品牌的
用品
2. 創新與想象
3. 整體印象 – 組織、齊整和專業
「Tollways」團隊表現以上各項，而且在他們辨

JEC is proud to announce that Mr Tai
Wing Woo, Senior Mechanic from Maintenance & Renovation department, was
awarded Outstanding Worker - Quality
Public Housing Construction and Maintenance Award 2006 by Hong Kong’s
Housing Authority. A prize presentation
ceremony was held on 9 December 2006
at the Hong Kong International Trade &
Exhibition Centre, in Kowloon Bay. JEC
would like to congratulate and encour-
age Mr Tai Wing Woo on his excellent
accomplishment.
怡和機器驕傲地宣佈保養及維修部高級技
工戴永和先生獲香港屋宇署頒發2006優
質公共房屋建築及維修 — 傑出工友獎。
頒獎典禮於2006年12月9日在九龍灣的香
港國際貿易及展覽中心內舉行。怡和機器

Sarasin, who founded
the M&E Contracting
Division in JMTL. Under
Khun Sarasin’s leadership, the company has
developed into a premier M&E Contractor in Thailand. This Award, in its third
consecutive year, was established in
order to recognise staff with outstanding performance of works attributable to
their knowledge, expertise, behaviour,
qualification and attitude. The candidates are nominated by their division
managers and appraised by a committee
and the management for final selection.
JTML presents awards as an encouragement to outstanding personnel with
exceptional work performance, in order
to encourage all personnel to develop
their own skills and capabilities.
Nine JMTL colleagues were selected
with the award and presented at the
JMTL Annual Staff Party held earlier this
year.

In recent years, Hong
Kong society increasingly
attaches greater importance to Indoor Air Quality
(IAQ). JEC’s Air-conditioning
Systems Department contributes to the
betterment of indoor air quality through
the introduction of ‘HITACHI’ TIO2
fluorescent lamp, which is both
easy and convenient to install.
HITACHI uses nano
technology to coat the
TIO2 coating on the
fluorescent lamp
surface. Electrons
(e-) and Holes (h+),
thus, will be produced on the surface of
HITACHI Photocatalytic Lamp tube when
lighted. When combined with moisture
and oxygen in the air, Hydroxyl (OH) is
formed. Hydroxyl is a powerful oxidising
agent that oxidises microbes and gases
that come into contact with the tube and
converts them into harmless water and
CO2.
Since ‘HITACHI’ TIO2 fluorescent lamp
has been introduced to the market in
Japan, it has been quickly put to use in
hospitals, clinics, elderly homes, schools,
kindergartens, and places where crowds
gather. In Hong Kong, JEC is committed to healthcare and environmentally
friendly products. JEC recently visited
and interviewed a clinic customer in
Shatin and obtained their observations,
as follows:
Q: Have you tried any other products
to reduce the bacteria and odour
in your clinic previously?
A: Previously we have used air cleaners that are also disinfectants. The
downside is that the cleaners need
to manually put in additives daily
and the motor of the air cleaner can
also be quite noisy and annoying to
patients, doctors, and nurses alike.
Q: What persuaded you to try to use
‘HITACHI’ TIO2 fluorescent lamps?

A: As TIO2 is a well-developed technology; we believe it could work. The
product leaflet described ‘HITACHI’
TIO2 fluorescent lamp’s ability to
eliminate odour. Actually, most clinics have a slight medical odour; we
tried to cover ours with various
methods such as the air cleaners but with not so positive
results. In the clinic, we have a
storeroom for medical equipment

and materials, about 100ft . Previously the room constantly needed a
ventilation fan to remove the odour,
but when we installed six ‘HITACHI’
TIO2 fluorescent lamps, and lit for 24
hours, and the odour disappeared!
Q: We know that doctors lighting
environment have strict requirements for brightness and hues.
Do you feel that ‘HITACHI’ TIO2
fluorescent lamp meet these requirements?
A: Doctors need a sufficient lighting to
make diagnosis. The brightness and
hues of ‘HITACHI’ TIO2 fluorescent
lamp meet these requirements.
Q: Finally, what do you think the
advantages of ‘HITACHI’ TIO2 fluorescent lamps are and if they are
value for money?
A: Basically, ‘HITACHI’ TIO2 fluorescent lamps are quite similar to T8 &
T9 fluorescent lamps which we use
daily. Just switch on the lamps and
we instantly have no extra cost. We
highly recommend these efficient
lamps to other clinics, or homes for
the elderly.

Building maintenance units (BMU), commonly referred as gondolas, are one of
the key products that JEC provides to
building structures with facade maintenance needs. BMUs are commonly

1. BIPV Power Systems - Photovoltaic Devices – Renewable Energy
Sources for Sustainable Development
Historically there has been a general industry impression that the application of solar
energy is not relevant to urban areas with high population density. However, sustainable development has become the key watchword in modern city development, and
lowering energy consumption and reducing emissions of pollutants and Greenhouse
Gases, including CO2, are now major issues of concern for the general public as well
as scientists and engineers. Photovoltaic, or PV for short, is a solar power technology that uses solar cells to convert energy from the sun into electricity. Importantly, it
is an environmentally friendly type of renewable energy.
With a careful design in suitably selected applications, Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) can achieve the above joint aims of lowering energy consumption and
reducing CO2 emissions. This is especially applicable for office buildings in tropical
and sub-tropical cities, such as Hong Kong and throughout the Asia Pacific region.
In view of Hong Kong’s unique geographical, economical and social characteristics,
JEC would recommend alternating current grid-connected BIPV systems as the best
choice of Hong Kong.
2. Solar LED Lighting
Solar LED lighting is a cost effective solution for street lighting as it comprises a selfcontained system with no wiring from the mains supply, no trenching through existing
roads, pavement or landscaping and a welcome immunity to grid power outages.
During the day, the system battery is recharged by direct current electricity produced
by the mounted PV panel from solar energy. At night, the battery delivers this stored,
renewable power to the light source. For standard solar street lighting, the three-day
battery reserve will cater for cloudy days. Based on these significant advantages,
such systems are highly applicable and beneficial for use in Hong Kong and around
the region. In addition, JEC’s range of solar powered landscape/ garden lights is also
very popular for lighting yards and gardens as they are virtually maintenance free,
easy to install and cost nothing to run.
3. Wind Turbine Generator Systems
Similar to solar power, wind turbine generators are environmentally friendly renewable power sources, without generating pollutant or CO2 emissions. The force of
wind turns the blades or propellors of the wind turbine, which drives a generator to
produce green electricity. Contrasting with the large wind turbine generators installed
and used as in wind farms and major power plants, micro turbine systems with small
power output (less than 5kW) are also increasingly popular and useful for numerous
commercial and industrial applications in the Greater Pearl River Delta, where pollution and power shortages are a dual challenge for many businesses.
4. Biogas and Landfill Gas (Waste-to-Energy) in Lean-burn Gas Engine Genset Systems
Both Biogas and Landfill gas are significant sources of Greenhouse Gases, including methane, which is over 20 times more potent than CO2 as a contributor to climate
change. These gases are also potential health hazards if not properly controlled, but
can also be a viable alternative energy source. Cummins lean-burn gas engines are
capable of running on a variable quality gas–from pipeline natural gas to field gas or
even biogas with a methane number greater than 40. Lean-burn gas generator sets
are designed to provide reliable performance, high fuel efficiency and very low emissions for applications such as high-hour peaking, prime power and combined heat
and power (CHP).

some facts and figures
before proceeding onto

According to the Hong Kong
Census and Statistics Department,
electricity consumption in 2005 totalled
160,363 Terajoule equivalents to over
44.5 billion kilowatt-hour, which would be
equivalent to having enough electricity
to keep a jumbo jet in the sky for over
37 years. In addition, the Hong Kong
Environmental Protection Department
announced its research findings that the
carbon dioxide emission in 2005 totalled
38,100Gg, equivalent to over 38 million
tonnes, which weigh more than 7.6 million elephants.
“Climate change and global warming
have become business phrases, thanks
in part to Al Gore’s movie – An Inconvenient Truth,” stated Mr Raymond Fung,
JEC Environmental & Safety Manager.
“JEC has been helping our customers
to search for green alternatives and
there has been a tremendous growth
in the usage of environmentally friendly
building products during the last couple
of years. One of the main reasons is that
more developers find ‘green’ features
economical in the long run, despite their
initial higher installation costs. Another is
that they help attract multinational, environmentally aware, corporate tenants.”

Mr Fung continued, “Government Incentives to encourage developers to adopt
green building features and construction
methods are also contributing factors.”
JEC is committed to providing customers with world-class environmental
engineering so as to increase awareness of an environmentally friendly,
economical business that will benefit not
only customers, but will also benefit the
overall community. In addition, JEC’s
best sales’ prospects include products
that help to save energy, recover heat,
reduce waste or maintenance needs,
improve indoor air quality or come from
sustainable sources. Variable speed
pumps, heat recovery systems in HVAC,
hot-water solar panels and motion
sensors have become more commonly
requested. Building integrated photovoltaic panels (BIPV) also have increased
in usage, particularly in government
buildings. The market for green building
products, however, is far from mature
and, therefore, has great potential, going
forward.
As Mr Peter Long, Senior Manager of
Building Equipment & Products division
said, in regard to JEC’s recent Best Outdoor Clean Air Campaign Award, “There
are opportunities in the BIPV system for
growth in Hong Kong, as most of the
commercial buildings here are vertical
curtain-wall buildings. These types of
buildings require a lot of energy, and
also reflect high levels of solar energy. If
the surfaces of curtain-wall buildings are
replaced with photovoltaic panels, which
can be placed on walls or windows, the
solar energy produced can be harnessed
as a renewable energy source”. He
commented further, “There are hurdles,
however, for BIPV in the Hong Kong
market. Strong government support is
required to motivate developers to invest
in the systems.”
Hong Kong’s Electrical & Mechanical
Services Department’s pilot project at
Wanchai Tower involves installing 500
sq. metres of PV panels with a total
peaked capacity of 55 kW. Electrical
power generated from the BIPV system
will provide electricity to some of the
systems in the building. With this solar
energy, about 23 tonnes of CO2 emissions (equivalent to the weight of 4.6
elephants from the power station can be
avoided each year and the system responds to the global challenge of climate
change.
Although 90 percent of Hong Kong’s
projects use BIPV to promote a green
image, JEC is optimistic in more practical usage in stand-alone projects in
rural and remote areas with increasing
public environmental awareness. Green
building and green building products are
essential to sustain Hong Kong’s development and economy. JEC will continue
to source and provide world-class environmental engineering and products for
customers, and will continue to highlight
the long-term economic benefits, in addition to increasing awareness of a green,
sustainable society.

根據香港統計署，2005年的總電力消耗
為160,363垓焦耳，相等於超過445億千
瓦特小時，即相等於可以讓一架珍寶客
機在空中發翔37年。此外，香港環保署
調查和宣佈2005年的二氧化碳排放合共
38,100千兆克，相等於380萬噸，重量超
過760萬頭大象。
香港的機電工程署在灣仔大樓的試驗性計
劃涉及安裝500平方米的光伏電池系統，
它的總電量最高為55千瓦特。BIPV系統
所產生的電力將會向建築物內的一些系統
供電。透過這太陽能，每年大約可以免卻
發電廠排放出23噸（相等於4.6頭大象的重
量）的二氧化碳，而且該系統協助應付氣

Mr Guenter Taus joined Jardine Technical Services Inc., Philippines in May
2006. He has over 20 years of working experience in the Philippines and a
strong background in the electronic engineering sector. Here is what he
has to say about conservation and his favourite hobby – diving.
Guenter Taus先生在2006年5月加入菲律賓怡和技術服務。

以下是他談談及他對環保的看法和他的鍾愛嗜好 – 潛水。

Kyoto Treaty, CO2-emissions, global
warming, floods, landslides-- and the list
goes on and on… all these are directly
related to the damage that we humans
inflict on our environment.
Having said that, it must become our
main objective to reverse this trend and
become responsible stewards of our
environment, our natural resources, and
in our private as well as corporate functions. While on the corporate side, we
should encourage and implement energy
savings, proper housekeeping, and a
safe working environment - these endeavors must also extend into our private
and personal lives to make the difference
that is required.
Since our Earth consists of 75% water,
it is just natural to see our oceans as a
main habitat for life (as well as food), and
thus the need to preserve and protect the
oceans.
As an avid diver for over 20 years,
marine preservation has become a main
focal point, from the protection of a species, to major beach clean-ups, from
finding alternative means of livelihood
for dynamite fishermen, to discouraging
cyanide fishing.
Being a certified PADI dive Instructor
(including Technical diving), my diving
passion has filled me with a sense of fun,
pride and achievement. It has, perhaps,
also set the tone for my commitment to
try to achieve some balance and actively
engage in conservation – before it is too
late.
The underwater world is truly a “borderless world”. We should try to replicate
this and work hand in hand across cultures, and break down the barriers that
keep us from being responsible environmental stewards for future generations.

直接與我們人類侵入環境直接有關。
說到這，我們的首要目標應該是將這個
趨勢逆轉，我們不但以個人或企業而成為
有責任心的管家，保護環境和天然資源。
而在企業層面，我們應該鼓勵和實施節約
能源、加入適當的管理和提供安全的工作
環境 – 這些嘗試應該亦伸延到我們私人
和個人生活的層面，從而作出改善。
由於我們的地球75%由水組成，很自然
地把我們的海洋視為生命的主要生長地
(以及食物)之供應，所以需要維護和保護
海洋。
作為超過20年的潛水愛好者，保育海
洋己變為一個主要焦點，由保育某一種
生物到清潔主要海灘，由幫助以爆炸
(dynamite)方式捕魚的漁民尋找另外的維
生生計到勸阻氰化（cyanide）捕魚。
作為認可PADI潛水教練（包括技術潛
水），我對潛水的熱誠令我享受之餘，亦
感到驕傲和有成就感。也許正因如此，令
到我有使命感去取得生態平衡，並積極參
與環保 – 否則便會太遲。
海底世界真的是一個「無國界世界」，我
們應該不斷努力，手跨越文化，打破阻
止我們為下一代作為有責任心環保管家
的障礙。

A Day In The Life Of A JEC Management Trainee
怡和機器管理見習生的一天
JEC’s two-year Management Trainee (MT) programme is designed
to provide a fast track for graduates, with potential to accelerate
their careers, as qualified professionals and to supplement JEC’s
own capability and experience to cope with our ongoing business
expansion. Here’s what a day in the life of MT Alice Ching entails:
8:30am to 9:00am
1:30pm to 2:50pm
After a quick scan of today’s schedule and a brief check
on emails, I am ready to begin the day. A special task
– Visiting the new Central Pier!
I jump on a bus and head to Aberdeen for a site visit for
a tender bidding to review the actual condition of the
site to help estimates.
9:00am to 10:00am
2:50pm to 5:00pm
A departmental meeting with executive members helps
me to gain insight into different issues in our projects.
Understanding the team’s performance, business target
and progress assists me making proposals that can add
value to our products offering, and ultimately to increase
sales.
I arrive at the new Central Pier with some colleagues
and monitor the testing and commissioning (T&C) of our
newly installed movable ramp. The purpose of T&C is to
demonstrate the quality and condition of the equipment
to clients. The most important feature of the movable
ramp in the Central Pier is the safety factor.
10:00am to 10:30am
5:00pm to 5:20pm
Attend a brief performance review with my supervisor to
discuss my monthly performance.
I head back to the office. On the bus I read through my
notes gathered during the visit.

5:20pm to 5:30pm
One of my projects is to research and contact potential
markets and businesses of environmentally friendly
products. Opportunely, one of the representatives from
Germany is meeting us today and I attend the meeting
with an executive manager. We discuss our marketing
objectives that we hope to achieve through the developing new business.
I make a final check of my emails. I am delighted to
have been invited to next month’s Group Briefing hosted
by our CEO, Mr James Graham. The Group Briefing, held twice a year, is a breakfast meeting with all
executive managers in order to conclude JEC’s financial
status and overall performance for the year.
5:30pm to 6:00pm
12:30pm to 1:30pm
At lunchtime I share my weekend activities with my colleagues and catch up on new emails.

I contact a few sub-contractors to chase them to ensure
they return the quotation to us on time. I then conclude
my day by going through my schedule and preparing for
the next day.

“Caring Company” Recognition
怡和機器獲嘉許為「商界展關懷」公司
In February, JEC has been awarded the Caring Company
Logo 2006/07 at the Caring Company Recognition Ceremony
held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre
to recognise our efforts in contributing to the well being of
citizens in need last year. A series of volunteer services and
activities is being planned and will be carried out by the JEC
Caring Team in 2007.

To enhance JEC Volunteers’ leadership and social services skills in volunteer services, five JEC volunteer representatives attended a Corporate Volunteer training
course organised by the Social Welfare Department and Hong Kong Children And
Youth Services.
“It was a very informative training course which provided me with lots of in-depth
knowledge about Corporate Volunteering and useful skill sets and techniques when
helping the needy people. I look forward to practicing my newly learnt skills at our
upcoming volunteer services”, said Betty Yu, one of the JEC volunteer participants.
為了加強怡和機器義工的領袖才能和義工服務交際技巧，五名怡和機器義工代表參加
了一個由社會福利署和香港兒童及青年服務舉辨的企業義工訓練課程。
「這是一個很富資料性的訓練課程，它給了我很多關於企業義工的深入知識，和幫助
有需要的人時一些有用技能的和技巧方法。我期待著在我們的不久將來的義工服務中
實踐我新學到的知識。」其中一位怡和機器義工楊麗雅說。

JEC Facilitates Fire Drill at Lei Yue Mun
怡和機器協助在鯉魚門的火警演習
On 9 December 2006, the JEC Caring Team spent a wonderful day at the
Lei Yue Mun and helped facilitate a fire drill for the residents and tenants of
the Lei Yue Mun in collaboration with the Christian Family Service Centre,
Lei Yue Mun Branch. The total number of the Lei Yue Mun participants
recorded for the event was over 200, which exceeded last year’s record.
Prevention and preparation for fire in villages, such as Lei Yue Mun, is
necessary as any possible fire incidents would spread quickly and threaten
lives and destroy homes. It was felt by all participants that the event was
very meaningful and the JEC Caring Team is looking forward to the next
year’s fire drill.
2006年12月9日怡和機器義工隊在鯉魚門渡過愉快的一天，與基督教家庭服
務中心鯉魚門分社合作，協助那的居民和住客進行火警演習。是次鯉魚門
活動參加總人數錄得超過200名，超逾去年的紀錄。防範和為鄉村作火災準
備是需要的，例如鯉魚門，因為任何火警發生時，火勢將會漫延得很快，危
及性命和燒毀房屋。所有參加者都感到是次演習活動十分有意義，而怡和機
器義工隊期待著明年的火警演習。
Jardine Distribution Donates to
Farms in Bicol, Philippines

True to its vision of‘Partnering with Filipino Farmers’,
Jardine Distribution Inc. (Jardine Dist.), a JEC wholly
owned business unit in the Philippines, recently held Crop
‘Recovery’ Seminars in the Guinobatan and Polangui
towns in Bicol. These are two farming areas that were
severely damaged by two super typhoons in December
2006. Aside from teaching the farmers new technological inputs in farming, Jardine Dist. also donated complete
Crop Protection Packages consisting of JEC agricultural
products to each of the attendees. Jardine Dist. hopes
that the donations will assist farmers in returning to their
livelihood post-disaster.
