LEADERS IN LEARNING
TERM THREE
2015
STUDENTS EXCEL
ONCE AGAIN!
Burnside High School students continue to
achieve at national level this term.
MALESTROM STORM HOME!
In early September, fifty-six male students from Burnside High
School travelled to Hamilton to compete in the ‘Young Singers In
Harmony National Barbershop Championship.’
‘Malestrom,’ under the direction of Ravil Atlas and Gavin Hurley,
were the only South Island representatives in the Boys’ Chorus
category, having won their Regional Final held at Rangi Ruru in July.
Singing the classic barbershop repertoire “Their Hearts Were Full
of Spring” and “South Rampart Street Parade,” they beat thirteen
other choruses from across New Zealand to be crowned National
Champions. This is an even more remarkable accomplishment, as
they are an un-auditioned choir, and this was the first time that they
had entered the competition.
GOLD AT THE
NATIONAL CULINARY
COMPETITION
Congratulations to Clize Craven 13TKB and
Miku Kiyama 12NWU who won the prestigious
‘New Zealand Secondary Schools Culinary
Competition’ held at the Manukau Institute
of Technology. Their winning dishes included
an entree dish of golden beetroot fritter with
baby chioggia and red saute, goats cheese and
beetroot chips accompanied by a rich beetroot
sauce. Along with their Gold Medals and
trophy they each won a $2000 City and Guilds
Culinary Scholarship, a Samsung tablet and a
trip to Tahiti. The school won a $1000 Bidvest
Voucher and a $7000 Blue seal Turbofan
oven and stand. They will now represent
New Zealand in Tahiti at the International
Secondary Schools Culinary Competition being
held 4-11 October. In preparation for the Tahiti
event, the girls will hone their skills under the
mentorship of Mark Wylie, a renowned New
Zealand Master Chef.
PRINCIPAL’S
REPORT
Dear Parents and Caregivers
It is hard to believe that Spring has
arrived. The term has flown by, and
students and staff are now looking
forward to a well-earned break. The
seniors have received their results
from the recent examinations. These
will provide a gauge in terms of
their progress towards their NCEA
qualifications, and what still needs to
be done. School reports were issued
on Friday 25th September. Seniors
receive an NCEA Academic Summary
with results from their internal
standards, and their progress towards
the external standards. Along with
the fortnightly progress reports, the
Juniors will receive a list of assessment
grades set against the Curriculum
levels. The holidays are a good time
for students to organise their work
and themselves in the lead up to
the end of the year. For seniors the
focus in Term 4 is on completing final
internal assessments and revision for
external examinations.
EVENTS AND COMPETITIONS
Term 3 is always extremely busy with
many cultural, artistic and sporting
events. The production of ‘Joseph
and the Amazing Technicolour
Dreamcoat’ was an outstanding
show in every way, drawing large
audiences. It played for three nights,
plus a matinee for students from our
contributing schools. More success
at the NZ Secondary Schools’ Choral
Festival Finale in Wellington; with
twenty-four choirs from around the
country competing, Burnside was
the only school to have two choirs
qualifying — Bel Canto and the
Senior Chorale. Our students were
PRINCIPAL’S
REPORT
outstanding and, after three days of
judging, both choirs received Gold
Awards. A fabulous result, considering
only six Golds were awarded overall.
The much anticipated Platinum
Award is the premier award of the
competition, awarded to the choir
whose performance is graded
at 90% or more in all aspects of
their performances. This year this
prestigious award went to the Senior
Chorale. Three years ago Bel Canto
also received this award. Burnside
High School has now achieved
platinum on four occasions – an
achievement we share with only one
other school.
Further successes include ‘Malestrom’,
a sixty strong male choir who won the
NZ Barbershop Competition held in
Hamilton, our Hospitality team who
won the New Zealand Secondary
Schools Culinary Competition, and
Burnside High School students
who won gold and silver at The
New Zealand Secondary Schools’
Weightlifting Championships — all
significant achievements against
tough competition. Congratulations to
all students and staff involved in these
events.
The Year 13 Formal on 22 August saw
500 students and 40 staff enjoying
a wonderful evening together. The
students looked splendid in their
finery and their behaviour on the
night did themselves and you as
parents proud. Congratulations
to Ms Reid, Year 13 Dean, and the
Year 13 Committee for organising this
successful school event.
The winter sports season concluded
with twelve teams competing in
Winter Tournament Week. Results
are included in this newsletter, with
notable successes in Junior and
Senior Boys’ Basketball, Football,
Golf, Weightlifting and Fencing.

PRINCIPAL ROLE
My aim as Principal is to develop,
maintain and promote Burnside High
School as Leaders in Learning, and
my priorities for 2015 are threefold:
•
To establish myself as an effective
Leader of Learning within the
BHS community — students, staff,
parents/whanau and contributing
schools.
•
To work with the Board of
Trustees, Senior Leadership Team
and staff to review and refine the
School Charter to clearly identify
the school’s vision, purpose and
priorities.
ACADEMIC BALANCE
With many students involved in a
range of co-curricular activities,
I watch how students manage
and balance academic work, cocurricular activities, part-time work
and social life. I urge students to
manage carefully the pressure they
put themselves under, to keep sight
of their goals, and not to take on
too much. Being organised, making
a plan, establishing priorities, and
committing, are key ingredients
to success. It is also important to

become immersed in the culture
and lose that perspective. I have to
balance the fact that, while I want
to see tangible evidence of progress
towards my goals, I still have much
to learn about the systems, ways,
and culture of Burnside High School.
I want to earn the respect of the
school community and to prove
myself as a worthy leader. I am
working to have a visible presence
by spending regular time around the
grounds, in the staffroom, and at cocurricular activities. Although I am an
experienced Principal, I have to know
Burnside before I can really add my
flavour to things. I place high value in
making connections and developing
quality and effective relationships
with staff and students.
I am so impressed by the quality,
talent, loyalty and determination of so
many people here.
Mr Phil Holstein, Principal
I believe I am making progress
towards these goals and am mindful
that, for a short time, I have the
advantage of bringing an outside
perspective to things. Quickly, I will

GOLD & PLATINUM
AT THE BIG SING FINALE
The Burnside High
School choirs, Bel Canto
and Senior Chorale,
travelled to Wellington
in August to compete at
the New Zealand Choral
Federation’s Big Sing
Finale Competition. Here
they spent four days
rehearsing, performing
and observing other
choirs.
After an intense few days, the results
were announced with Bel Canto
winning a Gold Award, and Senior
Chorale taking the prestigious Platinum
Award. Rosa Elliott was also awarded
the SOUNZ composition prize for
Best Choral Composition. This piece,
“Requiem” was performed at the Gala
Concert by Bel Canto.
ART HISTORY TRIP TO MELBOURNE
At the rather ungodly hour of 4am on the
15 July, sixteen tired but excited Year 13 Art
History and Visual Arts students gathered
at Christchurch airport, ready to fly to the
cultural heart of Australia. The following four
days were filled with exploring the galleries
and streets of Melbourne. Accompanied by
their teachers, Ms Mentink and Ms Swadel,
our Year 13 students were treated to a
vast array of art and architecture. Within
the monumental building that houses the
National Gallery of Victoria’s impressive
collections, the students were able to study
superb examples of Italian Renaissance
paintings, as well an exhibition of Nordic
design, and an outstanding interdisciplinary
show of Aboriginal art work at NGV’s Ian
Potter Centre. With tired feet and a few
shopping bags later, they arrived back in
Christchurch early on Sunday morning, just
in time to begin Term Three the following
day.
Both choirs are conducted by
Susan Densem. Bel Canto’s student
conductor is Hattie Hopkins and Senior
Chorale’s student conductors are Bryan
Lim and Rosa Elliott.
Congratulations to both staff and
students for this prestigious award!
NATIONAL
ART AWARD
Burnside High School student Henry Turner
gained second place at the recent 2015
Waikato Society of Arts National Youth
Art Award with yet another example of his
outstanding talent.

PINK
DAY
Early in term 3, the Burnside
High School Speak Up Team
which promotes anti bullying,
ran a ‘Pink Day’. The year 13
students and several of the staff
wore an item of pink clothing
in support. Activities and prizes
were organised by the group,
and plenty of fun photos to
record the day were taken.
Over the past year the group
has spoken at divisional assemblies,
created and distributed posters, and
participated in fund raising for the
national bullying awareness day— all
in line with the Burnside High School
values:
IMAKANE VISIT
AUGUST 7-14
In term three, we had a return visit from a group of
eighteen Japanese students and two teachers from
Imakane, Hokkaido. This exchange started in 1991 when
a Burnside group visited the town. Since then thirteen
groups of Burnside students have visited Imakane.
YEAR 13 FORMAL
On Saturday 22 August, the Christian Cullen Lounge at the
Addington Events Centre, was transformed into a vision of ancient
Greece. Almost 500 people attended the event and they were
greeted with Grecian columns, rambling vines and a tunnel of
6
flickering lights, as they entered the venue. The dozens
of styles of dresses and suits, reflected the diversity of
the year 13 cohort, for whom this event was arranged.
Highlights of the event included the photo-booth
and a staff “flash-mob” dance. Supper as always, was
also a highlight and a chance to rest from the riotous
dancing, which many of the students enjoyed. We are
blessed with many talented musicians at Burnside,
and some of these students shared their talents during
supper. We are very grateful to Caitlin Wright and Keith
Dela Providencia from Year 12, who performed some
contemporary music, and to some of our year 13 boys
who also performed. The lighting and DJ music were
provided by an ex-student and the entire event was
organised by a committee of current year 13 students.
A huge thanks to the committee for their creativity and
the many hours spent preparing for the year 13 formal.
During their visit, they attended some Japanese classes
at school but also participated in a variety of activities.
These included: visiting the Antarctic Centre to see
the blue penguins and ride the Haglunds, punting on
the Avon River, going on a sightseeing trip to Akaroa,
enjoying a farm visit, a famous Fish and Chip lunch and
a Harbour Cruise. Mr Holstein farewelled the group
before they left for Auckland on their way home. Once
again, Burnside families made the visitors feel very
welcome. I could not have been more proud of our
students; both the host students and the students
who helped out with organising activities and the
farewell party, were simply superb hosts. They are to
be congratulated for the genuine interest and care they
exhibited. The impressions they gave the visitors will
stay with them forever.
Burnside High School Fashion and
Textiles students have their eyes set
on the fashion and glamour of THE BIG
APPLE in 2016.
A team of students and parents have been busy planning
fundraising for the trip and decided that a fashion show to
showcase the talents of our young ladies would be fitting.
As their ideas developed and interest grew, the girls made
contact with many exciting brands and boutiques here in
Christchurch. Students showcased their work alongside
established brands in an evening of style and celebration
in the Aurora Centre.
MAORI NEWS
YEAR 9
WHAKAPAPA VISIT
Ms C Prasertdee
On August the 10th, Dr Terry Ryan from Ngai Tahu
visited Burnside High School. He met with Year 9 Maori
students and talked to them about Whakapapa. We are
fortunate to have him come and share this knowledge
with our students. It was an added bonus that some
parents were able to come along and join in this
session. Dr Ryan has a wealth of knowledge about Ngai
Tahu whakapapa. He also has a great knowledge about
the whakapapa of other Iwi. We look forward to his visit
next year.

SENIOR DRAMA
PRODUCTION
This Year’s Senior Production was
the timeless family favourite, “Joseph
and the Amazing Technicolour Dream
coat.” The cast of forty six students
had a lot of fun bringing the characters
to life through song, dance, comedy
and drama. Fittingly, the show was a
riot of colour, with gorgeous costumes,
feathers, spangles and amazing lighting
effects.
There is no musical without music
and the memorable show tunes were
beautifully performed by the eighteen
piece orchestra. Any production totally
relies on teamwork for its success and
the high standard of this show was clear
evidence of the solid commitment of
everyone involved.
The annual Senior Dance Showcase
took place on the 20th August,
where Dance students from Years 11
to 13 demonstrated their hard work
and achievements from this year.
The Showcase saw dances in the
styles of Contemporary, Musical
Theatre, Hip Hop and even Russian.
Students from across all three year
levels were able to showcase their
performance and choreographic
skills .They have developed these
skills through various methods and
techniques, as well as performing
choreography from a number of guest
artists this year, including learning
repertoire from dancers of The New
Zealand Dance Company. This year,
senior dancers from Kaiapoi High
School featured in the programme as
special guests. Burnside High School
students appeared in Kaiapoi’s
Dance showcase in Term 3 as part of
a collaboration offering Christchurch
Dance students more opportunities
for performance.
The Senior Dance Showcase was
a huge success with students
performing to a particularly high
standard with the support of staff,
parents and students who had come
to see the show.
CHECKMATE!
At the recent South Island Chess
Competition in Ashburton, the
Burnside High School team of
Ian Thirring, Samuel Li, Gagjan
Thillaikannan and James
Calder-Knight won second
place — losing by one point to
Ashburton College.
BURNSIDE HIGH
SCHOOL SOLAR
TABLE
SOLAR ENERGY HITS BHS
As the largest secondary school in
Canterbury, the company of Solar
Bright decided in July, to present
the school with a solar charge table.
The table has the ability to generate
enough charge for 4 USB devices to be
charged, while allowing a maximum
of 8 students to sit around it. The
table was initially generated in 2014
and took 6 months to be a completed
project. It was first used in 2014 by
the Christchurch City Council and the
Re:START Mall on Cashel Street. By
donating the solar charge table to BHS,
Solar Bright envisages that they will
encourage young minds to engage and
help developing minds think creatively
with innovation and initiative. The table
has been situated in the school quad.
NEW ZEALAND SENIOR MATHEMATICS COMPETITION
6
8
This competition is open to Year 12 and 13 students, and 1500 students sat the preliminary paper in May. Of these the top
15 in New Zealand are selected to go through to the final. Chi-Yen Hwang, 13SRT, was one of the top 15 in New Zealand
and attended the final in Wellington in August. This was an outstanding effort as Chi-Yen was competing against the best
mathematics students in New Zealand. Joseph Chung and Samuel Park, both 13SRT, both finished in the top 100 students in
New Zealand, a very creditable performance.

Burnside’s Student Computer
Support team’s main focus is to
enable students and staff to learn
and develop technological skills. The
team shares a roster that allows for
them to be available to help during
both class times and in the library at
lunch. The team consists of capable
Year 13 students, who devote study
times, lunch times and after school
to ensure students and staff have
IT support available at any time.
Other responsibilities include the
COMPUTER SUPPORT GROUP
management of some of Burnside’s
Moodle pages and committing to be
available at Burnside’s after school
homework club. The team was happy
to lend their skills and time at the
South Island Google Conference this
year held in the Aurora centre during
the holidays. This was a challenging
experience with an international
flavour. Students supported delegates
to ensure they could connect to our
network and take advantage of the
school’s excellent facilities. The team
is ably led by Hannah Colenbrander.
NZSM JAZZ FESTIVAL
A JAZZ CLEAN SWEEP
Following their outstanding success at last term’s
NZSM Jazz Festival in Wellington, our jazz musicians
completed their competition season by repeating
this success and cleaning up at this year’s CPIT Jazz
Quest event in early August. A total of 32 bands from
Christchurch, Nelson and Dunedin competed over
three days in two categories: Big Band and Jazz Combo
(small band). Burnside won the following awards:
•
Junior Jazz Ensemble (directed by Mr Petch) — Gold award
•
Hamish Smith: Best Bassist and Best overall musician in
the competition
•
Matt Howes: Best Guitarist
•
Ella Dunbar-Wilcox: Best Vocalist plus the award for Best
Original Composition (entitled ‘On Cuba Street’)
•
David Petch: Best Trumpeter
•
Jack Page: Best Pianist
Jess Clapp (Sax) and Robert Petch (Drums): Highly
commended in their category
•
Big Band (directed by Mr Petch) — “Best Big Band”
and Gold award
•
•
Senior Combo (directed by Mr Hood) — “Best
Combo” and Gold award
Congratulations to all involved.
The academic mentoring team at
Burnside has been enormously
successful this year. Lunchtime
tutoring takes place every Tuesday
and Thursday in the library. This
allows students to drop in, as and
when a bit of extra help is required.
We are hugely grateful to the library
staff who have been incredibly
supportive and have allowed us
to use the seminar room for this
purpose. There have been two new
tutoring innovations this year:
1.
10 10
The introduction of ‘iStudy’, a
homework group aimed at ESOL
and International Students. Our
thanks to Richard Li and Dawn
Adrian, who dreamt up this
wonderful idea.
2. The introduction of a group of
year 13 students who meet on
Wednesday lunchtimes to help
each other, a new development
thanks to Marcus Leung and Kylie
Huang.
Lunchtime tutoring finished at the end
of term three, but we hope to build
on these concepts in 2016. The other
way in which our tutors have helped,
is in a one-on-one capacity. In all of
these roles, the tutors have made a
positive difference to life at Burnside
and to the individuals involved. An
enormous thanks to the 100, or so,
year 13 tutors.

BASKETBALL WIN
The Burnside Junior Boys’ Basketball Team won the
South Island Basketball Tournament in Nelson, during
tournament week. They beat a tough Cashmere team
82–75 in the final. The team represented the school well,
playing excellent team basketball and winning every
game at the Junior South Island Tournament. A young
team who will help keep Basketball strong at Burnside
for years to come.
ARCHERY WINS
The 44th Archery National Indoor Championship was held
in Wellington over the weekend of Saturday 22nd and
Sunday 23rd August.
Victoria Tucker came up against some very stiff
competition and to her credit came third in her division.
CYCLING SUCCESS

WEIGHTLIFTING
WINNERS
The New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Weightlifting
Championships were held on Saturday 5th September
in Christchurch. Two Burnside High School students
competed with outstanding results: Madi Williams (13LSS)
received a gold medal and Hannafi Bin Husaini (13PZS)
received a silver medal. Our congratulations go to both
students and their coaches — a truly well-deserved
reward for all their hard work and training.
CANOE POLO
On the morning of Friday 7th August, Burnside High sent
four teams (27 students) down to Oamaru to represent
Burnside in canoe polo, against seventeen other teams
from around the South Island. Burnside was represented
across three grades having two U19 Open teams, one U19
Girls team and one U15 Open team. All players gave their
best with growth shown across all of our teams. We had
success on the Saturday with our U19 A team beating our
long-time rivals Middleton Grange A, but sadly we then
lost to them in the semi-finals on Sunday, putting us into
the 3rd / 4th final against James Hargest. The Burnside U19
A team then won against James Hargest to bring home the
bronze medal.
There was also individual success over the weekend with
Josh Duncan, Matt Patient and Dillon Van de Loo all named
in the Boys Tournament Team and also the Mainland U18
Men’s team. Georgia Van de Loo and Julia Sharp are also
to be commended, both named in the Girls Tournament
Team and the Mainland U18 Women’s Team. Thanks to
Mr Johnston, Miss Symons and Miss Robison for running
canoe polo at Burnside High School and supporting us all.
Matt Patient
The South Island Schools’ Cycling Championships were held at Ruapuna
Speedway on July 3rd. Yet again, the talented Burnside riders shone and
were rewarded for their efforts. Overall, the school finished second by five
points, to Christchurch Boys’ High School (38 to 33). As always the event
was well supported by the parents, and the students were a credit to the
school both on and off the track.

RUGBY CANTERBURY
SCHOOLS’ CHAMPIONS,
FOR THE 2ND YEAR IN A
ROW!
In what can only be described as a resounding win,
the Burnside High School Girls’ Rugby Team, beat
Rangiora High School in the final of the Canterbury
Schools’ Championship at Rangiora on August 12th with
a whopping 78–15 result, and were presented with the
Canterbury Rugby Union’s Girls 10-aside Cup.
The winning team members were Taylor Aldridge,
Shanese Buchanan, Isabelle Chensem, Becky Davidson,
Rosie Davie, Sarah Hanrahan, Latai Kaufusi, Rico Kumagai,

his coaching assistance.
FENCING
On the 12th of September the National Secondary
Schools Fencing Competition was held, alongside the
U20 National Fencing Competition. Students from
Burnside High School achieved the following:
Liam James, Year 12, 7th in Men’s Epee (Both in the
National Secondary Schools Fencing Competition and
the National U20 competition.)
In the National U20 Women’s Epee team event, the
Canterbury team (all Burnside High School students)
won the championship. The team members from
Burnside High School are: team coach — Lucian
Nightingale (graduated from Year 13 BHS in 2013) and
team members — Wai Ling Chan (graduated from Year
13 BHS in 2014), Charlotte James (Year 10), and Brittany
Wyatt (Year 12).
DUATHLON SUCCESS!
Five students from Burnside High School competed in
the Canterbury Secondary Schools Duathlon at Ruapuna
Raceway on the 26th August. All events centred round a
2km run, 10km bike, 2km run. Both students and coaches
found the course excellent but a little chilly! The following
results reflect the hard work and training that went into
preparing for this event:
FOOTBALL GLORY
On September 9th, the boys 1st XI football team managed
to win their 3rd trophy this year. They had already won the
League Cup with a winning record of playing ten games
and winning nine. They then went up to Papamoa during
tournament week and managed to win the Rex Dawkins
cup. The final trophy was won against St. Andrew’s and
this was the knockout cup. It was a hard fought win that
14
went to penalties. Luckily keeper Nika Ross managed to
save their final attempt giving Burnside the victory. A huge
thanks to the entire team, but even more so to the two
coaches; Andrew Bull who has been with the team for six
years and Graham McMann who has been helping out for
the last two years.
