MONTERREY MEXICO CHAPTER SPAIN CHAPTER PRESS RELEASE Networking Social Event & Lecture: “Corallium rubrum: The Red Gem of the Mediterranean” in Monterrey, Mexico - February 13, 5:30 p.m. *** Lecture will be given in spanish *** GIA Alumni Monterrey, Mexico Chapter & GIA Alumni Spain Chapter cordially invites you to attend a networking social event in Monterrey (Mexico) and a lecture presented by André Neves Bento (GG, GP, AJP, President of GIA Alumni Spain Chapter): 'Corallium rubrum: The Red Gem of the Mediterranean'. Although coral has been featured in jewellery for millennia, it remains a product that is not widely understood. It focuses on a sector that operates in a very fragile eco-environment, where proper standards and methods of operation are absolutely essential. Four months after CIBJO released the first Blue Book devoted to coral, defining globally acceptable trade and industry practices and nomenclature, this lecture was designed for gem enthusiasts, antiques dealers, jewelry designers or decorative arts professionals. Participants will gain valuable knowledge about identifying and separating Corallium rubrum, the noble coral species, from other species, classifying both non-treated and treated corals, and also artificial products that imitate coral. There will also be discussions about the major sources of this organic gem, located in Europe and in north of Africa. André Neves Bento is a research gemologist and jewelry appraiser, continuing his career as a jewelry specialist in 2008 when he made his first studies at the Gemological Institute of America. Holds all GIA gemological diplomas: Graduate Pearls, Accredited Jewelry Professional, Graduate Diamonds, Graduate Colored Stones and Graduate Gemologist. In 2011, André was appointed Accredited Jewelry Expert/ Valuer by the portuguese assay office (INCM), being listed as one of the few that may serve as State’s official consultant on matters concerning jewelry appraisals, such as in legal or judicial processes. In 2013, he received his Jade Diploma from the Asian Institute of Gemological Sciences (Thailand). With almost a decade of experience in the fine jewelry industry, Neves Bento studied with Christie's (New York), Sotheby's (Hong Kong), lived in South America, traveled throughout Europe and Asia, totaling more than 50 countries, to source collectors’ jewels and gemstones. Neves Bento’s interest in organic gems evolved to his present focus on the study of Corallium rubrum, the noble coral species. In 2014 and 2015 he conducted research on the harvesting and transformation processes of this species of coral of the Mediterranean, traveling a dozen times to Algeria and collecting data in this northern Africa country during an extensive period of time. There will be a short Q & A session following the lecture. All are welcome to attend this event, whether you're a GIA Alumnus, student, industry associate, hobbyist or guest and you are also encouraged to share this invitation with any others you may feel would be interested. Join your fellow alumni and industry friends for a relaxed evening! We will gather to socialize and network!
