MLB Managers Finally Get To Challenge Plays
by Ethan Lasser, 5G
Have you ever watched baseball on TV and seen a horrible call by the ump? Well, that is not
going to happen anymore (probably). Finally, managers can now challenge plays in the MLB!
Managers can only challenge one time in the first six innings and two times from the seventh inning
until the completion of the game, so three challenges in all. However, just like always, the manager
can still request that the umps talk over any play to see if the other umps have a different
decision. They still cannot challenge whether a pitch is a ball or strike. If a manager has used up all
his replays, then home runs will still be reviewed by the umps without the manager having to request
a challenge. The plays will be reviewed using umps that are in the central MLB Advanced Media
facilities in New York, and then they will call the decision back to the baseball stadium.
Commissioner Bud Selig called this a “historic moment” for baseball.
The worst call any ump has made was in 2010 when
Jim Joyce blew Armando Galarraga’s only chance of getting
a perfect game. There were two outs in the bottom of the
ninth and Detroit was winning 3-0 over Cleveland. Armando
Galarraga was one out away from getting his first-ever
perfect game. Jason Donald hit an in-field grounder to the
first baseman, Miguel Cabrera. He threw it to the pitcher,

Come on, Obstruction?
by Noah Weitzner 5JB
It’s game three of the 2013 World
Series. Will Middlebrooks (Red Sox third
basemen) falls into the base path and Allen
Craig (Cardinal’s runner) trips over him.
Allen Craig runs home and clearly seems to
be out, but the ump calls him safe because
of obstruction. Confusing? Yes, and
controversial, too. If the ump had called an
out, the Red Sox might have won that game
instead of the Cardinals. Many people don’t
like the call because it gave the Cards the
win. It’s a good thing the Sox went on to win the World Series or this might have been the most
controversial call ever.

by Andy Burris, 5G
The 2013 World Series had the same teams facing off as the 2004 World Series, the St. Louis
Cardinals and the Boston Red Sox. The 2004 World Series was a historic one. After trading away Babe
Ruth in 1919, the Red Sox hadn’t won a World Series up until 2004. They swept the Cardinals to
“Reverse the Curse.” The Red Sox also made history that year in the American League Championship
Series. They went down 3-0, a deficit that had never been overcome. However, they won the next four
games of the series, changing history in the process. Then they started off the World Series with a
lead, and never were losing during the whole thing.
This World Series was a repeat match-up for the two
teams, and again the Red Sox emerged the winners. But there
are only two players left from the 2004 World Series, Yadier

inexperienced in comparison to Ortiz, who had seven years of

as Ortiz’s. Also, Molina is a catcher, and catchers have to

While Molina has averaged 8.9 home runs a year since
2004, his home run totals have increased recently. He hadn’t
had more than eight home runs a year through 2010, but he
has not had less than twelve since, with a high of 22 in 2012. Ortiz has averaged 34.2 HRs a year and
has never had fewer than 23 in a year since 2004. Ortiz has an amazing .331 batting average; only 24
people have a better lifetime average than that. Molina has a .284 average, which puts him tied for 15th
of all time among catchers. They are both kind of slow and only have a combined 17 triples since 2004.

In the end, Ortiz has outdone
Molina since 2004. But they both did
great in this year’s World Series.
They had the two best averages in
the World Series of players who
played in the whole postseason,
Ortiz with an average of .688, the
second best ever, and Molina .304.

MLB Award Predictions
by Eli Moore, 5JL
Francona and Hurdle, AL and NL Managers of the Year
I think that Terry Francona will be manager of the year in the AL. Francona took Cleveland, a
team that was ranked 30th the previous season, and made the Indians into a wild card contender.
Francona managed the Red Sox from 2004-2011 and led them to their World Series wins in 2004
and 2007. This year I don’t know how Francona did it, but after a 68-94 season, he coached the
Indians to a 92-70 season. That is a 24-win difference.
I think Clint Hurdle will be manager of the year in the NL because he and the Pirates made
the playoffs as a wild card team. The Pirates, like the Indians, did not have the most thrilling records,
but Hurdle made a big difference. Before this season the Pirates were 79-83. Hurdle led this yea’s
Pirates to a 94-68 record, a 25-win difference. Before he was manager of the Pirates, he managed
the Rockies. Both managers Hurdle and Francona played in the majors; Francona was a first
baseman and outfielder, and Hurdle was an outfielder.
Myers and Fernandez, AL and NL Rookies of the Year
I think that Will Myers will be Rookie of the Year (ROY) in the AL because he led the Rays to
the playoffs. Myers had one play that everyone was talking about in the playoffs when he called off
Desmond Jennings, but then did not catch the ball. Myers had some pretty good stats with 13 home
runs, 53 RBI’s, and a .293 batting average. Myers is a big ROY possibility. I think that Jose
Fernandez will be the Rookie of the Year in the National league. A lot of people will disagree with
me, but Jose Fernandez is second in the league for his ERA of 2.19. He had some other eyepopping stats with 172.2 innings pitched, 187 strikeouts, and only giving up 111 hits. The reason I
think that Fernandez will be ROY in the NL is because Puig was not as much of a team leader as
Fernandez. Also, Fernandez has the best stats ever held as a rookie-starting pitcher. Cont’d on p. 4

More MLB Award Predictions...Cont’d from p. 3
Scherzer and Kerkshaw for Cy Young
Max Scherzer is Detroit Ace.
I think Cy Young in the AL is going to be Max
Scherzer. I think that Max Scherzer will be the Cy Young
winner because before the season Justin Verlander was
the ace for the Tigers, but Scherzer looks like the new
Tigers’ Ace. If you compared his stats between this year
and last, you would see a big change. He has 21 wins,
a 2.90 ERA, 240 strikeouts, and only three losses.
I think that Clayton Kerkshaw will win the CY Young in
the NL because he has had such a good ERA; also, he
has changed the Dodgers. As a young pitcher, his stats
are amazing. He has 16 wins, a 1.83 ERA and 201
strikeouts.
Davis and McCutchen, AL and NL MVPs
I think that Chris Davis will be the AL MVP because in previous seasons he has had only a
few hits and a couple of home runs and RBIs. Once a fourth-string pinch hitter and now a starter
with O’s, Davis has different stats now. His records including over 40 home runs and 40 doubles,
as well as the most home runs in a single season. Some people have suggested that Davis took
steroids this year, but he’s no A-Rod. His stats were very different from previous seasons. A .286
AVG, 53 Home Runs, and 138 RBI’s.
I think that the NL MVP will be Andrew McCutchen. Every year McCutchen has one of the top
batting averages in the MLB. This year McCutchen was able to lead the Pirates to a playoff seed
for the first time in a long time. McCutchen’s stats are amazing. He had a 317 AVG, 21 home runs,
and 84 RBIs. These are the players who I think will win these awards.
Baseball’s Top Rivalries
by Ethan Mishra, 5JB
There are a lot of rivalries in baseball, but
this is my list of the Top 10 of all time. Most
rivalries are based on the locations of two teams—
like Boston and New York. A rivalry can begin with
something as simple as when one team’s pitcher
hits a player with a pitch and the other team’s
pitcher does the same thing—but this time on
purpose. That is often when a brawl starts. The
batter charges the mound and the dugouts clear.
These rivalries can last for years, even decades.
As you can see from the list most teams who are
rivals are located close to one another.
What’s your top rivalry in baseball? If it
didn’t make Ethan’s list, tell the SXT why you think
it should have. Write your reply and put it in Ms.
Echave’s box by Friday, Nov. 15.

Super Bowl Predictions:
Will Chiefs take the Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII?
by Nico Engvall, 5C
The NFL season has had some surprising winners so far. Very few people thought that the
Kansas City Chiefs would be 9-0 by this point. In this article, I’m going to make some predictions
about the NFC and AFC champions.
First let’s look at the NFC. For the division
winners, I predict the Dallas Cowboys, which lead
the NFC East with a record of 5-4. They just got
three new players: new defensive end, Everett
Brown; rookie safety, Jakar Hamilton, and a
defensive tackle named Jay Ratliff.
The leading team for the NFC North is the
Green Bay Packers with a record of 5-2. The
Packers just recently lost wide receiver James
Jones with a sprained ankle, and it is questionable
whether he will play in the upcoming games. Next
we have the New Orleans Saints who are leading I pick the Chiefs to beat the Denver
the NFC South with a record of 6-2. With Drew
Broncos in the AFC championship game.
Brees on fire and throwing amazing passes, they
have a good chance of making it far in the playoffs. Last, we have the Seattle Seahawks, who are
looking amazing with an 8-1 record.
Now, let’s take a look at the NFC wild card
teams. My first team is the Detroit Lions. Matt
Stafford and Megatron--aka Calvin Johnson--have
been a great matchup this season. My second
wild card team is the San Francisco 49ers. Colin
Kaepernick has been great for the 49ers. He has
the arm of a pitcher in the MLB, the speed of an
Olympic medalist, and the skill of all QBs
combined. Now let’s look at the AFC. In first
place in the AFC East we have the New England
The Seahawks will beat the Saints in the NFC
Patriots, with a record of 7-2. The Pats have lost

a lot of very skilled players this year, such as Wes
Welker who went to the Denver Broncos. The
leader of the AFC North is the Cincinnati Bengals, with a record of 6-3. Recently, Vontaze Burfict
was fined $21,000 for a head butt to New York Jets wide receiver Steven Hill.
Next we have the AFC South. The leader is the Indianapolis Colts, with a record of 6-2. They
just lost wide receiver Reggie Wayne with a torn ACL. Last we have the AFC West. In first place we
have the Kansas City Chiefs, who are undefeated at 9-0. The Chiefs just got a new head coach,
Andy Reid, who came from the Philadelphia Eagles.
Now let’s look at the AFC wild card teams. My first team is the Denver Broncos, who recently
got Wes Welker from the Patriots. Peyton Manning and Welker have been a really good
combination this season. My second team is the Miami Dolphins. Ryan Tannehill, the QB for the
Dolphins, has been on fire lately. The whole team has been amazing, playing the best I’ve ever seen
from them.
After learning all this information, I predict that the Kansas City Chiefs and the Seattle
Seahawks will be in the 2014 Super Bowl. It would be Kansas City’s first Super Bowl appearance
since Super Bowl I. I predict that the Chiefs will win the game, 14-10, and take home their first
Super Bowl win.
5
NFL’s Top Five Quarterbacks
by Eli Kim, 5JB
#1
Here they are:
1. Peyton Manning
2. Matthew Stafford
3. Drew Brees
4. Aaron Rodgers
5. Tom Brady
I think that Peyton Manning of the Denver Broncos
is the number 1 QB in the NFL. On week 8,
Peyton made 30 completions, 44 attempts, 354 yards and 4
touchdowns. He scored 31 points in the last quarter. In his career,
his rating is 96.7, 62,406 yards and 465 touchdowns. By week 5
he had set a new NFL record by scoring the most touchdowns in a
five-game span. So far this season, his rating is 119.4, 2,919 yards
and 29 touchdowns. I think that he will do well this season
because he has an amazing arm and he has a lot of very good
players to pass to. That is why I think he is the NFL’s number 1
QB.
Peyton Manning: Best QB
#2 I think that Matthew Stafford of the Detroit Lions is the number
2 QB because on week 8 he made 33-48 completions, 488 yards, 1 touchdown and two interceptions.
In his career his rating is 84.6, 15,424 yards and 96 touchdowns. For this season, his rating is 94.8,
2,617 yards and 16 touchdowns. I think that he will do well
this season because he has an amazing arm and a 6’5
wide receiver who we all know as Calvin Johnson. That is
why I think he is number 2.
#3 I think that Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints is
the number 3 QB. On week 8 he made 26-34 completions,
332 yards and 5 touchdowns. In his career his rating is
94.9, 48,209 yards and 343 touchdowns. For this season
his rating is 109.2, 2,290 yards and 19 touchdowns. I think
Drew Brees has an amazing arm.
he will do well this season because he has a great arm and
this Purdue graduate has a lot of football experience, both in
college and in the pros. That is why I think he is number 3.
Aaron Rodgers: sidelined temporarily.
#4 Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers is number 4
because on week 8 he made 24-29 completions, 285 yards,
2 touchdowns. In his career his rating is 105.2, 23,852 yards
and 186 touchdowns. For this season his rating is 108.0,
2,191 yards and 15 touchdowns. I think he will do well this
season because he has a great arm and he has great
players. That is why I think he is number 4. [Aaron Rodgers
was hurt during Monday night’s loss to the Bears. He
suffered a fractured collarbone, and as we went to press,
there was no timetable for his return to the Packers.]
#5 I think that Tom Brady of the New England Patriots is number 5 because on week 8 he had 13-22
completions, 116 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception. His career rating is 95.9, 47,062 yards and
347 touchdowns. In just this season his rating is 82.7, 2,256 and 13 touchdowns. I think that he will do
well in this season because he has a great arm and he has Rob Gronkowski the best TE (tight end) in
the NFL. That is why I think he is number 5. [Unfortunately, due to hamstring, back and forearm issues,
Gronkowski is on the injury list for the rest of this season, so it’s doubtful that he’ll play against the
Steelers this Sunday].

Heisman Watch:
No Shortage of Talent
by Eli Moore, 5JL
Who will win the Heisman trophy? Before making my predictions, I looked at stats and
previous season records of past winners and compared them with current players in the same
positions that play like them. Here’s what I found out.
A.J. McCarron is the starting quarterback
for the Alabama Crimson Tide. He is preparing
for the NFL. Last year he led the Crimson Tide
to the BCS national championship win. This
season A.J. McCarron has been doing very
well, and the Crimson Tide is undefeated. In
previous season he has done pretty well
throwing only eight interceptions in three
seasons. McCarron has also thrown for 5,965
passing yards and he has thrown 43
touchdowns. He has been to four bowl games
and plans to go to another. He is like Andy
Dalton. He has the same type of mentality to
A.J. McCarron
lead his team to the playoffs as a young QB.
**************************************************************************************************************
Teddy Bridgewater
Teddy Bridgewater is the starting quarterback for the
Louisville Cardinals. Last year Bridgewater took the
Cardinals to the Sugar Bowl and upset the Gators. This
year the Cardinals are undefeated with no competition.
Bridgewater has thrown 20 picks in two seasons. In
previous seasons Bridgewater has some pretty good
stats. He has 5,847 passing yards in his previous
seasons and he has thrown 41 TDs. He does well in the
pocket and has only been sacked five times. I would compare him to someone like Colin
Kaepernick because he can run with the ball and take his team to the playoffs.
**************************************************************************************************************
Sammy Watkins
Sammy Watkins is a starting wide receiver for the Clemson Tigers. You might have seen his
name or heard about him. For three years now, since his freshman season, Watkins has been
making big plays. Sammy Watkins and the Tigers are undefeated and number 4 in the country. In
previous seasons his stats have been eye-popping. He has 1,927 yards in two seasons he also
has 25 receiving touchdowns and 150 receptions. He has great hands which is crucial in the
NFL. Watkins is fast and he’s not a big guy. I would compare Watkins to Larry Fitzgerald because
they both have great hands and they’re both fast guys who are able to make something happen.

Heisman Watch: No shortage of Contenders...Cont’d
from P. 7
Johnny Manziel
Johnny Manziel is the starting
quarterback for the Texas A&M Aggies. We all
know him as last year’s Heisman winner, the
freshman QB. This year Manziel thinks he is
going to win it again. He had a really good
season last year with many achievements such
as a Cotton Bowl victory and, of course, a
Heisman. In his only full season Manziel has

picks, but he also threw for 3,706 yards and 26
touchdowns. I can compare him to Russell
Wilson because he is fast and he is a big playmaker who can guide his team to the playoffs as a
rookie.
******************************************************************************************************************
Tajh Boyd
Tajh Boyd is the starting quarterback for the Clemson Tigers. Tajh Boyd and the Tigers have lost just
one game. Boyd has Sammy Watkins another Heisman candidate to pass to, so their duo is almost
like Peyton Manning and Wes Welker. Boyd has been doing exceptionally well this year with stats
right now that rival Andrew Luck’s senior year, and look where Andrew Luck is now. In previous
seasons Boyd has done well but nothing like this year. In past years he has had some breakout
stats, including 8,053 yards, but this year he’s on target to break some records. Boyd also has 73
passing touchdowns and has thrown 28 interceptions. Some people might wonder why he wasn’t
Heisman with stats like that. I would compare him to Michael Vick because he is very fast and he
finds his receivers.
*****************************************************************************************************************
Marcus Mariota
Marcus Mariota is the starting quarterback for the
Oregon Ducks. Mariota has been a starting QB since his
freshman season. This year he is attacking the ground and
finding his receivers. Therefore, the Ducks are undefeated and
number 2 in the country. Mariota does not have Kenjon Barner
to hand the ball off to. Last season, Mariota led the Ducks to a
Tostitos Fiesta Bowl win. Last year, Mariota also put up some
stats on the board, With 2,677 passing yards, six interceptions,
and 32 touchdowns. Mariota has really good potential as a
NFL quarter back. I would compare him to the new Tony Romo.
Cont’d on P. 9
Mariota leads the undefeated
Ducks, the # 3 team in the
country.
8
More Heisman Contenders To Watch... Cont’d from P. 8.
T.J. Yeldon
T.J. Yeldon of the Crimson
Tide
T.J. Yeldon is the starting running back for the Alabama
Crimson Tide. Yeldon has taken over at running back because
Eddie Lacy is in the NFL now. A.J. McCarron relies on him to get
the first down. Yeldon is a sophomore and he still makes big
things happen. He has good footwork and he is a big running
back who can break tackles. In previous season(s) Yeldon has
had some good stats. He has rushed for 1,108 yards and 12
touchdowns. He also has 11 receptions. If I had to compare him
to an NFL player it would be Eddie Lacy because Yeldon has
been around him and watched him. Also. Lacy probably taught
him some stuff that he can use.
Jameis Winston
Jameis Winston is the starting
quarterback for the Florida State
Seminoles. Jameis Winston is only a
freshman, but he looks like a favorite to
win it. Look at how Manziel did last
season, and right now Jameis Winston
has better stats than Manzel did at this
point In his freshman season. Winston is
Winston looks for a receiver.
quite an athlete. He also plays baseball, He
pitches, so he has an arm he is sort of like Bo Jackson. The Seminoles are number 2 in the
country. I bet Florida State doesn’t miss EJ Manuel. Jameis Winston is exploding scoreboards
with his stats. He already has over 1,500 yards, but he also gets sacked a lot. If Manziel can win
the Heisman as a freshman, Winston ought to be able to do it, too. The only reason why he
wouldn’t win it is because this year contenders are hunting for the Heisman. I would compare
him to Alex Smith, not the fastest guy out there, but the one who tries to get the extra yard and
even if his wide receivers aren’t the greatest, he’ll find a way to work with them.
Guess Who Never Won a Heisman?
There have been 74 winners of the Heisman Trophy since it started
in 1934. Almost all of these winners are college football legends. But
even more stars have missed out on the honor, whether they were
snubbed over age or race, had the misfortune of playing in another
player's shadow, came from a small school, or were simply overlooked.
Which of the following players never won a Heisman? (answer on p. 12)
1. Dan Marino
2. Peyton Manning
3. Michael Vick
4. Drew Brees

5. Calvin Johnson
6. Deion Sanders
Who’s the Top Wide Receiver?
Calvin Johnson Vs Dez Bryant
by Eli Kim, 5JB
Editor’s Note: Wide receivers, Calvin Johnson and Dez Bryant are both having great
years for their respective teams, the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys, but which is
really the league’s top wide receiver?
Calvin Johnson
Calvin Johnson is 6’5”; weighs
236 pounds, and he ran the 40-yard dash
in 4.35 seconds. He was drafted in the first
round of the NFL draft in 2007. He was the
second pick by the Detroit Lions. His
wingspan is 6’10. He went to collage at
Georgia Tech, and he has seven years of
professional football experience.
Calvin Johnson has been one of
the best wide receivers in the NFL since he
started playing, and he has 47 receptions,
821 yards, and seven touchdowns in this
season. In his career he has 535 REC,
Calvin Johnson makes an amazing catch
8,657 YDs and 61 TDs.
proving his skill.
Calvin Johnson has had a really
good season so far. He has the record for
most receiving yardage in a single season (2012). In one game against the Cowboys he got 14
REC, 329 YDs and one TD. I think that nobody else has gotten 329 yards with four receptions
in one game.
Dez Bryant
Dez Bryant is 6’2”; weighs 222 pounds and he did his 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds. He
was drafted in the first round in 2010. He was drafted 24th by the Dallas Cowboys. His
wingspan is 6’3”. He played college football at Oklahoma State and has four years of
professional football experience. Dez Bryant has 45 receptions, 641 YDs, and eight TDs. Dez
Bryant is a really good player. When he played the Lions in Week 8 he got three REC for 72
YDs, and two TDs. The Cowboys are a really good team but they’re not better than the Lions.
I think that Calvin is better than Dez because he has all the advantages—height, weight,
wingspan and speed. He can jump over four people when Matthew Stafford throws the ball up
high enough for him to get it. It’s not that Dez Bryant isn’t good; it’s just that Calvin is better.
Calvin also has a lot more experience in football and he’s not as violent and ferocious as Dez.
Dez Bryant is number 2 on my WR (wide receiver) list. As I said Dez is talented, strong,
has good hands, and knows how to read the defenders. In 50 pro games Dez Bryant has 242
receptions for 3,340 YDs and 33 TDs. Calvin Johnson has 217 receptions for 3,362 YDs and
25 TDs. So you see that Dez edges out Calvin in the wide receiver category.
