Next Deadline: March 13, 2016 Joyful Noiz March 2016 Farewell and Thank You to Mim and Jim! As Mim and Jim's term of service to us at Zion comes to a close, we thank Mim and Jim for leadership and direction they brought to the congregation and sermons they delivered that challenged us. As Mim and Jim learned more about the history and traditions of Zion, it was encouraging to see them discover - and for us to be reminded of Zion's vision that was documented in the past. One example is "Zion's Core Values" document from the 1990s -- still relevant for today and was reaffirmed in 2015. Less visible to the congregation was the experience and guidance they provided to Board and Ministry Reps. Important work with board included: formulating scope and discerning members for Lead Pastor Search Committee, processing congregation feedback into a lead pastor job description and helping church members discern their gifts and callings for committee and board assignments. These activities among others were of significant help to the congregation. Mim frequently commented to the board that she was impressed with the support and love she received from the congregation and the commitment of many members to Zion's mission and programs. Zion's Church Board is thankful for their service and the difficult work of preparing Zion for a new lead pastor. Blessings to you, Mim and Jim, as we anticipate you will enjoy some time of rest and discernment of God's next call to your ministry. Some of the hardest working plants include many of the palms, lilies, ivies and ferns, snake plant, philodendron, spider plant, ficus and rubber plant. If you take a look around Zion's halls and rooms, you'll find many of the plants listed. NASA recommends 1 plant per 100 sq. ft. of indoor space for optimum cleansing. Cleaning products - many healthier alternatives are available, whether purchased or made at home. Greenworks, Seventh Generation, EcoConcepts, and Method are a few producers of eco-friendly and healthier cleaners. Here's a list of some safer, readily available household cleansers and their properties: Baking Soda - cleans, deodorizes, softens water, scours. Antibacterial soaps can allow for resistant bacteria to continue to grow and multiply, so the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has advised against their use. You can avoid having to use antibacterial soaps and solutions by making sure you scrub well, whether it is your hands or your countertop. Scrubbing with a natural, non-antibacterial soap will loosen the bacteria, which can then be rinsed away with warm water and will no longer be harmful. Avoid using soaps which contain petroleum distillates. Lemon - one of the strongest food-acids, effective against most household bacteria. Borax - (sodium borate) cleans, deodorizes, disinfects, softens water, cleans wallpaper, painted walls and floors. White Vinegar - cuts grease, removes mildew, odors, some stains and wax build-up. They ship clothing to Poland, Republic of Georgia, Ghana, Liberia, Honduras, Nicaragua, Haiti, India, Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Kenya. The clothing is sold at local markets and thrift stores at low, affordable prices. For more information about Fashion Republic go to www.fashionrepublicinc.com. Jim Lapp and Mim Book reviewed their interim tasks that were accomplished and the status of those still being processed. Board is very appreciative of their dedication and attention to Zion's needs. We are thankful they answered the call to serve Zion this past year. They will be missed. ~ Ron Price Youth News, Continued from page 12. Michelle highlighted that as Anabaptists, we look at the Bible, Jesus, church, power, love, service and witness a bit differently than other churches around the world. We look at the Bible through the lens of Jesus. We believe that Jesus meant what he said and we are to live our lives like him. We also believe that Jesus’ life and teachings are important and not just his death and resurrection. We believe that we are called to live like Christ everyday and not just look good on Sunday’s. We also believe salvation is a process, a relationship and we are changed by having God a part of our lives. We believe that as a church we are connected to one another, we share a mission and discern truth together. When it comes to power we refuse to use coercion and leadership places a high value on others and works towards consensus. We believe that God calls us to love everyone, even our enemies, which means we make a commitment to work for justice for all people. Our service is not ministry “to” others, but “with” others. This was also connected to our history for simple living as a way for working at justice and mutual aid. Finally, the last thing Michelle touched on was that through our Believer’s baptism we witness to Christ living in us. I really enjoyed this time away to network and was challenged in the way that I work at ministry here at Zion. I look forward to applying many of the things we talked about in Orlando. When I was 11 years old, my family began a term of volunteer service through Mennonite Central Committee. We moved away from Pennsylvania, and I lost the connection to my Mennonite heritage. I spent the remainder of my childhood in Arkansas, married a girl from Louisiana, and now live and work as a missionary and church planter in Germany. Last week was my first time in 22 years to be back in the Souderton area. Knowing that my wife and I have been trying to figure out the origins of our last name (without much success), my father, Thomas Musselman, suggested that we visit the Mennonite Heritage Center. I agreed, sincerely hoping that someone there could guide me or give me some resources about my name. MHEP exceeded all my expectations. After an excellent introductory video on our Mennonite heritage, which even mentioned some Musselmans still living in Germany, Joel Alderfer took me to the Center's historical library and pulled out an inch-thick file on the Musselman family name. Joel also connected me to Jim Musselman who shared with me some absolutely fascinating research on the Musselman/Mosimann surname, along with GPS coordinates and a picture of the hamlet Moosegg in Switzerland--from which our name probably derives. The museum's exhibits, along with its maps and photos, gave an excellent overview of where my Anabaptist forefathers came from and why they settled in southeastern PA. The Fraktur display was beautiful and reminded me of the artwork I had seen in my grandparents’ home as a child. Continued to page 7... While I was admiring the illuminated writing, my children were happily drawing and coloring at the old wooden school desks. What really impressed me about my overall visit to MHEP was how easy it was to find exactly what I was looking for. I was expecting to have to spend hours researching this all for myself; I was thrilled, however, to find that the Heritage Center had everything already prepared for me. My dad, wife, and I came home and read through the resources from MHEP, fascinated by our rich Mennonite heritage and amazed at how much we were learning about our Anabaptist forefathers. We had some of the best conversations about our family's heritage that I can remember. We are hoping to visit some of the historical sites in Germany and Switzerland that we discovered during our visit to MHEP. I'm thankful that I was born into a family of Mennonite Musselmans. Through MHEP I found encouragement and strength from my ancestors to preserve and carry on the gospel of Jesus Christ to our children and our children's children in our broken, secular world. We look forward to visiting MHEP again with our children, and we are delighted that there is a place that has preserved our heritage and history with excellence. Chris’ father is Tom Musselman, his aunt is Pat Freed and his grandmother is Pauline (Richard) Musselman, long time Zion Mennonite members. Chris and his wife, Shannon, are church planters in Germany. They seek to generate a church planting movement. Their goal is that the love of Christ would be heard and received by more people. is Nature’s way of saying…. “LET’S Party” Joyful Noiz Joyful Noiz May 2016 2006 March Page Page 88 The Daily Positive It’s no secret that good things and bad things are going to happen in life on a daily basis. This doesn’t mean we should define our days by what happens in them. We can choose to laugh in the face of hardship. The average person laughs thirteen times a day, and studies show people who laugh are universally more attractive and live longer, which is also no secret. Tina Fey said that you can tell how smart someone is by what they laugh at. Maybe someone is smart just because they laugh at all. No doubt there will be times when laughing is the last thing in the world that we feel like doing, and it feels like there’s nothing to laugh about. Those are the times we need to laugh the most. If possible, find someone to laugh with laughter is literally contagious even just the sound of it can trick our brains into a better mood. Imagine an entire day without laughter. Laughter is joyful, and that would be a day without joy. Who wants to lead a joyless life? Find something small to even just smile about at first. Marshmallows in hot coffee, texting a friend, that our cars can make it from point A to point B (and maybe if they can’t make it, that there is a point B to go to in the first place.) Smiles lead to laughter and laughter leads to a non-wasted day, so let’s start using our time wisely, and no matter what life throws at us, laugh. Joyful Noiz March 2016 Page 13 Joyful Noiz Joyful Noiz May 2006 March 2016 Page Page 12 12 Youth News In January, I had the privilege to travel to Orlando, Florida to join with 42 other youth ministry workers from across the country for Youth Ministry Council of the Mennonite Church USA. This gathering happens each year in different locations. The year before conventions, this group typically gathers at the site of the next year’s convention location. The purpose for these meetings is multifaceted; it is part networking, part information gathering and sharing, part training and so much more. Rachel Springer Gerber, denominational minister for youth and young adults for the Mennonite Church USA, designed this year’s gathering to be something really tactile, hands-on and practical. Many of our discussions recognized the various challenges that face our youth every day and helped us to look at how we might engage our ministry to help them deal with these challenges. To help us to do that Rachel sought out case studies from participants ahead of time, so that we could break up into smaller groups and work together at problem solving. Our topics included things like: busyness and attendance; mental health issues; media and technology; family dynamics and other sticky youth ministry situations. In addition to our case studies, we were also given time to speak into the Convention planning process. Scott Hartman, who directs all convention planning, updated us on the current plans for convention, where meetings will be held, what hotels we will be using and how the food will be handled at Orlando 2017. He sought out our feedback from our last convention in Kansas, so that as they fine-tune this for the next one, things can run even smoother than in the past. While I really enjoyed these times of networking and looking at convention planning, what I was most excited about was hearing from the keynote speaker Michelle Herschberger, professor of Bible at Hesston College. Michelle always offers really solid teaching and tends to look at things from a different angle than most and this time was no different. Michelle, used her time with us to walk us through seven Anabaptist distinctives. Many of us are aware of these distinctives, but we may not always be thinking about them when teaching or leading our groups. Continued to page 17.
