The theme of this year Fair is “Rural Roots.” The theme encourages us to reconnect to our farming heritage in New Tecumseth, with appreciation for the hard work and dedication shown by farmers who developed our area with their own blood, sweat and tears. “As you come to Beeton from the area’s countryside you encounter a very friendly community that embraces it’s heritage and history,” said Beeton Fall Fair President, John Rutten. This is also the 125th anniversary of Beeton’s most famous citizen – Kate Scott Aitken who was born in the village in 1891. As part of the Fair’s 160th birthday celebration, the Agricultural Building on the fairgrounds is going to be named the “Kate Aitken Agricultural Hall.” This heritage building was constructed in the years just previous to 1900. The ceremony will take place in the agricultural building (Rotary Hall) at 1:30 p.m. in the afternoon on the Saturday of the Fair, Sept. 17. “A very important part of the program will be the launching of the Beeton Community Heritage Foundation with the presentation of the newly created Jim Milligan Memorial Award,” said Alison Priess. “The award is honouring the many, many contributions of time and effort that Jim gave to the community, and will be presented to three people for their past and present contributions to the Beeton community.” The late Roy Law is receiving the award for his leadership in the building of the existing arena in the late 1940s. His son, John, will be present to receive the Award. The late Harry Cross who was the dedicated secretary of the Fair for over a quarter of a century is also a recipient. Wayne Carleton, who was like an adopted son, will accept Mr. Cross’s award. The third recipient is Pat Cranston who is receiving the award for her continuing service in the BAA, especially in hockey, for over Terry Fox Run in Tottenham Organizers are gearing up for the annual Terry Fox Run in Tottenham. The local run will be held Sunday, Sept. 18 from 8 a.m. to noon. It will be held at F. X. O’Reilly School, 235 Queen St. N, Tottenham. Participants can run, walk, bike the 9-kilometre course on local roads. For more, contact Anne and Bob Manning, 705-435-0671, or [email protected] a quarter of a century. “It is incredible to think the Beeton Fall Fair is celebrating its 160th Anniversary this year,” said Rutten. “Just think of the legacy the founding fathers started so many years ago. Back in 1856 could they have imagined that what they started would continue on today? The weekend will be filled with great shows, country-life homecraft and agricultural exhibits, delicious food, farm animals to meet and greet, and fun activities for everyone. Highlights include: • Friday: Our band show is headlined by Tragically Hip cover-band, The Wheat Kings! • Saturday: Illusionist and Guinness World Record Holder Lucas Wilson (as seen on Dragon’s Den), Woofjocks Canine AllStars, Hands on Exotics Animal Display, 4H competitions, family friendly movie in the park. • Sunday: Demolition Derby, Antique Car, Truck, Tractor & Motorcycle Show. Small town charm and heritage is a big part of what makes our fair so special, and we will be celebrating Beeton’s heritage for our 160th anniversary.” The Beeton & District Agricultural Society is run by a team of dedicated volunteers, who have been putting on an annual Fall Fair for 160 years, which is enjoyed by thousands of people every year. Member CCNA Editorial, Letters & Opinion “The window to the world can be covered by a newspaper.” ~ Stanislaw Jerzy Lec Enjoying other worlds, and sci-fi heroes “The science fiction world has a lot of people doing seriously imaginative thinking.” Paul Krugman “In science fiction, we’re always searching for new frontiers. We’re drawn to the unknown.” Ridley Scott Record numbers of humans and extraterrestrials descended upon the Metro Convention Centre over the Labour Day long weekend, in search of answers. What they found, amidst the hundreds if not thousands of costume-clad individuals, was a place where time stood still and reality was merely an opinion. Despite being a lifelong science fiction fan, Fan Expo 2016 was my first real convention. I had said to myself every year, as my birthday neared, that I would attend, poke around and catch a glimpse of some celebrities. Two years ago, my niece and son made the journey downtown and obtained an autograph from my own sci-fi icon William Shatner. Yes, I admit it, I am a Trekker and I don’t care who knows it! As a teen, I watched Star Trek on Saturday mornings, on the black and white TV in our rec. room. Living in rural Caledon, the TV required “rabbit ears” to get that signal just right. This was quintessential science fiction; required viewing if you will, for any would-be space traveller. I can recite lines from many of the iconic episodes of the original series, which aired in the late 1960s. Shatner was our generation’s Buck Rogers and Neil Armstrong rolled into one. I followed his career and found many of his projects pretty decent. Just when the world was ready to write him off, he did something unprecedented – he won consecutive Emmy Mark Pavilons Awards for what were, in my opinion – the two best legal dramas in television history. I’m talking about The Practice and Boston Legal. Not an easy feat, for any actor. Boston Legal was one of the few shows that my wife and I watched together, religiously. We got hooked on the antics of Denny Crane (Shatner) and Alan Shore (James Spader). These two oozed pure comic genius. The older Shatner got, the busier he became, doing bit parts, commercials and all sorts of things. His popularity hasn’t waned one iota. Now, the 85-year-old plays straight man to a group of immature oddballs in Better Late Than Never, a “reality” show produced by Henry Winkler. Shatner plays mentor to Winkler, George Foreman and Terry Bradshaw as they tour Asia and basically act like juvenile delinquents. Priceless. It may not be high-brow TV, but it’s very entertaining. When Shatner arrived for his autograph session at Fan Expo, the place erupted as fans cheered loudly. My press credentials didn’t get me very far, or should I say close, to this star. Photos were prohibited, so all I could do was watch from afar. But hundreds paid the premium to get his autograph and many brought books, posters and photos with them for him to sign. As Christopher Lloyd wrapped up his photo session, I snuck close, got his attention and snapped a beauty. He looks very good for his 77 years and he told me he tries to live a healthy life. It has paid off. He’s still revered for his roles in Back to the Future, and still poses next to that iconic timetravelling DeLorean. One of his best roles, in my opinion, was Klingon Commander Kruge The in Star Trek III: Search for Spock. Lloyd is a comic genius. He was involved in Taxi, The Addams Family and won several Emmy Awards for his quirky characters. I’ve always found him to be unique. Gazillions of geeky fans went to Fan Expo to see legend Stan Lee for his last Canadian appearance. Lee, 93, is best known as the godfather of comic book heroes, as writer, editor, publisher, artist and former president of Marvel Comics. He is a superhero himself and appears in small cameos in many of the movies including Iron Man, Thor, Captain America ... I was lucky to get a shot of him signing autographs. The lines were massive. The real action came from distant galaxies, which came together at Fan Expo. People – tens of thousands of them – all ages, all walks of life, gathered to celebrate “strange, new worlds.” A lot of work went into their cosplay costumes, right down to the buttons and shoulder pads. You have to admire their dedication and commitment and it made us all smile. The Stormtroopers donned elaborate, and likely very expensive costumes, to tour the public areas and pose for photos. My oldest daughter wanted to go, simply to look at the costume-clad geeks and geekettes. She found it all very neat. My adult niece, who loves anime, purchased a few items for her growing collection. I enjoy any event that brings together likeminded people from all over the world. I find it, to coin a phrase, “fascinating.” We who witnessed the birth of modern science fiction through Star Trek and Star Wars are getting on in years. Fortunately, there are many, many younger ones embracing the “final frontier.” “I just had a crazy, wild imagination all my life, and science fiction is the greatest outlet for me.” Steven Spielberg The TIMES – September 15, 2016 – Page 5 Liberal Throne Speech delivers ‘same old’ By Jim Wilson MPP Simcoe-Grey The Throne Speech was a clear sign the Kathleen Wynne Liberals are a government that’s tired, selfinterested and desperate. The government can try to “re-set,” the narrative but it’s simply too late for that. Ontarians have endured enough under this government with its record of waste, scandal and mismanagement. Tottenham is really HIP! “HIP in the Park” was a cultural event for New Tecumseth. It was the first live streamed music concert in Keogh Park, Tottenham, home of our Cenotaph. This venue was perfect as the fans were there to pay tribute, not only to a poet and talented musician, but to a Canadian hero that so many people identified with. This event was made possible by the live music from Tim Ronan, the singing of O Canada by Sean Bourke, the Tragically HIP Trivia and donations of prizes from local businesses, the volunteers, the Town of New Tecumseth, the Nottawasaga OPP and the Tottenham Fire Department. A total of $2,000 was raised for the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research out of Sunnybrook Hospital. People can still donate online to www.sunnybrook.ca, and go to Participate, Support an Event and enter Team Name: Residents of Tottenham/New Tecumseth. Gord Downie, the front man of The Tragically Hip band, reminds me of the same energy, passion and courage we witnessed when Terry Fox ran across Canada. He is what hope looks like for me, despite the weight of his diagnosis. Colleen Rideout Hip Events Inc. McGUIRE FENCING LIMITED • Specializing in Farms • All Styles of Fencing • Installed & Repaired 705-435-2770 RR 1, EGBERT, ONT. L0L 1N0 Throne speech or not, this is the same Liberal government that has faced five OPP investigations. And it’s the same Liberal government that has slashed health care services while simultaneously driving up our provincial debt to more than $300-billion. This is the same Liberal government that is out of touch with the challenges that everyday Ontario families face. For 13 long years, every failed Liberal policy decision has made life harder and more unaffordable for Ontarians. Today, Ontarians are paying the highest electricity rates in North America and no Throne Speech is going to change that. Premier Kathleen Wynne can suddenly claim she is serious about tackling the province’s energy crisis but if that were truly the case her government would immediately halt any further sales of Hydro One shares. They would stop signing Green Energy contracts for energy we don’t need. The fact of the matter is the government is desperate. Voters in the Scarborough-Rouge River byelection sent a strong message that they are fed up with skyrocketing hydro rates. And it’s because of that message the Liberals are scrambling to shore up their support by making statements in a Throne Speech. Mark my words, the Liberals will do anything and say anything to stay in power. But it’s clear Ontarians, even those who have typically supported the Liberals, have grown tired of the government’s shenanigans. Increasingly, I’m hear- ing about more and more Liberals who can no longer accept the irresponsible policies of Premier Kathleen Wynne and her government. This government has created a future that is extremely bleak. Ridiculously high electricity rates, out-of-control debt, cuts to health care, and the loss of good jobs are not a formula for success. And let’s be clear here: until Ontario’s poor financial state is properly addressed, the government will continue to slash funding and cut services. Our party is in the midst of a policy review and I can tell you we will listen. And whatever policy we implement at the end of that review, it will involve getting Ontario’s fiscal house in order. We will bring down the debt. We will make investments that improve services and create jobs. We will create a plan that puts Ontario back on the right path. There is simply no reason we can’t make this province what it once was. Ontario can again be a place with good jobs for all. It can be a province that has the services people need and expect. We can have a robust fiscal policy. We can have an environmental policy that doesn’t kill employment opportunities and deter business. And we can have less red tape. And finally, we can have more affordable electricity. We’ve had these things before and we can have them again. Why reward bad behaviour? This could not have been accomplished without the support of the hundreds of customers who came out that evening, and so many local businesses that donated prizes for our mystery ice cream buckets and silent auction prizes.” “We are very happy to support CLASS because they are an important part of our community,” continued Perantinos. “We really love what they are doing for so many people both young and old. They are a great charity helping improve the lives of so many people, and we really enjoy doing this for them.” “There were many stories that night including the fantastic job George Scott does hosting our party and organizing the great talent and musicians that come out to play. George and his many friends including Dayne Polny of We Love Sound make the evening fun and entertaining for all. The Sugartones were great once again and we had some new talent this year including Ken Meyer. “This year we were also very fortunate to get so many volunteers and supporters come out from CLASS that helped us with the event. There was one young woman who helped sell so many mystery buckets by being so happy and enthusiastic. We sold over 90 buckets that night. Also, the large donation and presence from the New Tecumseth Fire Rescue crew was fantastic. “Maple Leaf Sports really helped us with some great silent auction prizes once again. But it was the small businesses in New Tecumseth that always come through with the majority of prizes that we use in our silent auction and mystery ice cream buckets. We appreciate them so much and hope that people support them by shopping local. “Seeing all of the people who came out, and showed their appreciation for CLASS, and helped out the great cause was enough to tell the tale of the night! It was a great night filled with great laughs, great music, and of course great ice cream! “We are already starting to think about next year to help celebrate our 10th anniversary.” Perantinos sends out a big thank you to these businesses and organizations for supporting his Block Party. “This is huge for CLASS! We rely on third party fundraisers not only to raise funds, but to raise awareness,” said Nancy De Luca, community development worker for CLASS. “We truly are grateful to everyone that organized this event. Cool Moose has been hosting this fundraiser for us for four years and each year they go above and beyond! We also very appreciate how George Scott and all the people that came to entertain us! The Alliston firefighters never disappoint! Once again, they came to show their support. CLASS is deeply touched how the community came out to support us.” “The funds raised from the Ice Cream Block Party and our 23rd Annual Golf tournament, will help to put a down payment for a house for five people in our community with intellectual disabilities,” said De Luca. When I heard about Reach for the Rainbow and the wonderful work it also does with kids, for me, I saw it as a natural link, the right charity to work with through our Smile Cookie Program. On behalf of all our Tim Hortons team members, I would like to thank all our customers for their continued support of this meaningful cause.” A charitable organization since 1987, Reach for the Rainbow (Reach) has created a full family support system that provides critical navigation to families to integrated recreational opportunities for children and youth with physical and developmental disabilities at organized summer camps and recreational community programs across the province of Ontario. The organization also provides an essential respite and counselling service to families and care givers, in-take assessments, 1:1 support counsellors, training to meet the individual needs of each participant at specific recreation sites, accessible transportation and the loan of special adaptive equipment. Supporting Reach for the Rainbow helps to empower families and children with disabilities, reduce barriers to participation for a vulnerable population and provide healthy active programs that are inclusive for children with disabilities. www.reachfortherainbow. ca The Smile Cookie campaign began in 1996 as a way to help raise funds for the Hamilton Children’s Hospital, and has grown to become a major fundrais- ing event at Tim Hortons restaurants. Nationally, Tim Hortons restaurant owners support more than 460 local charities, hospitals and community programs through the campaign. Last year, the Smile Cookie campaign raised $6.3 million across Canada. Visit www.timhortons. com for an up-to-date list of charities and cities participating in the campaign. Page 8 – September 15, 2016 – The TIMES Meeting on voting system During recent national elections, between seven and nine million votes have not elected anyone under the current voting system. This is because the existing “first past the post” system only requires the successful candidate to have one more vote than their competitors so unless the winner receives at least 50% of the vote, the majority of voters are not represented. Since most winners receive less than 50%, across the country, millions of votes are essentially wasted. The current federal government campaigned on changing this voting system and have created a special committee on electoral reform “to identify and conduct a study of viable alternate voting systems to replace the first-past-thepost system, as well as to examine mandatory voting and online voting.” A local resident is hosting a public meeting to learn more and share views on electoral reform and provide this feedback to the federal Electoral Reform Committee. This is a oncein-a generation opportunity to provide input into how we vote and elect our gov- ernment. The meeting will include a presentation on alternative voting systems and facilitated discussion on values that we want to shape our democracy, and issues such as online voting. All are welcome regardless of background on this issue. This meeting will take place in Alliston on Thursday, Sept. 29 starting at 7 p.m. in the Alliston Public Library meeting room. For more information, please contact Steph at [email protected]. Seniors’ luncheon Sept. 18 The Seniors Luncheon will be Sunday, Sept. 18 in the Seniors Room, at the Community Centre. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will be at noon. As always we will have a great BBQ lunch put on by our Club, with lots of entertainment on the side. This is all free to all seniors in our area. So mark you calendar, and come out. Meet some old, and maybe some new friends. If you need anymore information, you can always call Shirley Wilding at 905-936-2098. Garden club welcomes chef The Beeton Garden Club and Horticultural Society are offering up something a little different this month. We will be welcoming Emerie Brine, executive chef for Bernardin, to our Sept. 20 meeting. Emerie will be demonstrating proper canning procedures while making canned tomatoes, pickles and a tasty salsa. Please be our guest or join the garden club. As a special incentive we are offering your first 2 meetings free. An annual membership is $15. We meet at 7:15 p.m. in the Rotary Hall at the Beeton Park. Trillium’s GM Eric Vant Spyker, made the decision to support the local 1km/5km Walk/Run, benefitting the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, because “it’s the right thing to do.” “Cancer has touched all of our lives in some way,” said Vant Spyker. “Supporting local initiatives is an important way for our dealership to give back to the community, and sup- porting womens cancer research is paramount. I hope it sparks other business owners to dig deep, and support this worthy cause as well.” Vant Spyker went on to say that he appreciates that funds from the run are used at the local level, and that he was impressed the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation has decided to direct money to cancer patient treatment care and support, in addition to their ongoing research and awareness campaign. Last year, Run for the Cure Alliston saw 196 reg- istrants raise over $40,000. This year, event organizers, Kara Harris (run director logistics), and Michelle Hutt (run director fundraising), aim to increase community participation and have set a new fundraising goal of $44,000 for the one-day event. Committee members from the run visited Trillium Ford Lincoln to officially kick-off the 2016 season. “We are excited to announce our community partnership with Trillium Ford,” said Hutt. “Having major financial sponsor- ship like this is a first for us, and shows just how important this event has become to the residents and businesses of Alliston.” From now until the run on Oct. 2, Run for the Cure committee members will be out and about in the community, promoting the event and raising awareness for breast cancer research. Register online at www. cibcrunforthecure.com. The registration deadline for a free run day t-shirt is Sept. 19. “People can register as individuals or teams and the goal is to raise funds and awareness,” said Harris. “We invite school groups, businesses and sports teams to come out and show their support.” “We are also looking for local community support and volunteers to help us on Run day,” added Hutt. “High school students looking for community hours are more than welcome to take part in this fun and important day.” On the day of the event registration will open at 8 a.m., and the Run/Walk begins at 10 a.m. For more information e-mail Michelle Hutt at [email protected], follow Run for the Cure Alliston on Twitter @cbcf_alliston, or call 705-502-0760. The opening game had to moved when the Tottenham Community Centre arena suffered a power outage that caused the ice to melt. Luckily there was ice available at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre for an 8:30 start in the main arena and the teams relocated for their first match-up of the year. The River Kings opened the scoring late in the first period with a goal that came with only eight seconds remaining in the period. Tottenham’s Kaleb Rossel tied it up on an unassisted goal in the second period that made it a one period game going into the final frame. With no scoring in the third, the teams went into overtime. The River Kings left with a 2-1 win. The Greater Metro Hockey League has 27 teams in the line-up for the 2016/17 season including a few new entries. The League spans all the way from Tamiscaming, across to Wiarton and down to London. The Steam is a new organization this year with former NHLer Dennis Maruk taking over the top spot on the bench. Maruk had an impressive career in the National Hockey League most notably with the Washington Capitals where his banner season was 1981-82 when he scored a career high 60 goals. He also spent six seasons with the Minnesota North Stars. His career total was 888 NHL games with 356 goals and 522 assists. The Steam’s regular home game nights are Saturday at the Tottenham Community Centre with a few Monday night games included in the schedule. The Steam will be back in action this Saturday night, Sept. 17, when they will host the Toronto Predators. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Hornets win pre-season tourney The Alliston Junior C Hornets took on the Georgian Ice in the first game of the 10th annual Hornets pre-season Junior C tournament.
