Meet Strata Family
Behind Strata’s Emiratization
Success Story
At Strata, we’re extremely proud of our
Emiratization rate of approximately 45%, 84%
of which are female. Playing a key role in this
achievement is our Emiratization, Training and
Development department, which Fatima Al
Ketbi joined in February 2012 as Coordinator of
training for aero-structure technicians.
In this role, Fatima manages the trainees’
documents and coordinates their training
schedules. She helps them surmount challenges
that they may face during the training period.
She coordinates with United Arab Emirates
University and Lockheed Martin, our partners in
the program, which trains Emirati nationals and
develops their capabilities to work and grow in
the aerospace sector.

Preman Koranchath, a logistics support specialist
in the logistics support and production planning
department, recently received his Master’s
degree in Business Administration, with a
specialization in Logistics Support. Supported by
his manager, Karim Al Alami and his colleagues,
Preman brings to Strata a new view on logistics
that will support Strata’s goals as a company and
his own personal development.
Preman joined Strata in June 2013 as a
warehouse specialist. Since he has been with
the company, Preman has been anintegral part
of the department’s improvemet and was a key
contributor during the transfer from Strata’s
old warehouses to the new 1600 square meter
location.
The relocation required the logistics team to
work to work quickly, efficiently and at minimal
cost, without affecting the workflow.

effectively and make well-planned, impactful
decisions. She is motivated by the stories
she hears, especially when she can impact
them directly through her organizational and
management skills.
Fatima describes herself as “a life-loving
person who is capable of motivating others.”
This outlook and her willingness to face new
challenges are things she learned early on in
childhood, starting with school. Sometimes a
seemingly insurmountable assignment, Fatima
was focused and determined, and with the help
of her supportive mother, she was able to excel
and graduate with a BA degree in Information
Management. This experience has led Fatima
to strongly believe that she is capable of
encouraging and motivating new technicians to

Emiratization, Training and Development
The Emiratization, training and development
department at Strata plays a major role in
achieving a main objectives of the company –
growing a national workforce to help position
Abu Dhabi as a global hub for the aerospace
industry. It provides all training requirements
and programs to ensure that Strata possesses a
distinct workforce in the industry.
The technicians trained for 10 months at UAE
University (UAEU).They joined Strata on April 12,
2015 to finish 1,700 hours of on-the-job training
at the Al Ain facility. All trainees of the 7th batch
have successfully completed their training, and
Strata was proud to welcome the 50 trainees of
the 11th batch who began training at the UAE
University on May 31, 2015.
During the second quarter of 2015, the
department held 60 training sessions for office

the tests of using the lifting crane. In a step to
strengthen coordination and communication
with the trainees at UAEU, the administration
has allocated an instructor from Strata to be
permanently present at the university. It also
allocated another instructor who will split his
time between the university and the company, as
part of the preparations for the next phase of the
training program.
The department also implemented 64
professional training sessions totaling 2316
hours of training.
The aero-structure technician program
completed the training of 20 Emirati technicians

The Logistic Support
and Production Planning
The logistic support and production planning
team continued their initiatives aimed at
improving the supply of production process on
various assembly lines in Strata, with the most
effective and efficient methods, especially in
terms of cost.
The logistic support team benefited from 1350
Site Initiative, which is dedicated to storing
the daily production requirements in a location
closer to the work station, reducing the time
used to transfer required supplies from the store
to the production lines.
In this context, the department recently
implemented an initiative aimed at reducing
production cycle time for producing
the Empennage Ribs for Boeing 777, Vertical
Stabilizer Ribs for 787 and the Flap Track
Fairings for Airbus A330.
The team has designed a customized tool kit
in accordance with the Boeing aero-structure
technician requirements and the flow of the
assembly process.
The initiative aims to start and end the
production process early, reduce production
waste and decrease the amount of raw materials
reserved unless needed; all leading to reduced
costs for Strata’s stock of raw materials.
Strata achieved significant results in reducing
production time with contribution from the
Kaizen Promotion Office (KPO) and employees
working on the previously mentioned production
lines.
12
The production cycle time of the Boeing 777
Empennage Ribs dropped from 80 days to 47
days, a 42% improvement. The Boeing 787
Vertical Stabilizer Ribs production cycle time
dropped from 63 days to 35 days, a 44.5%
improvement. The A330 Flap Track Fairings
production was also reduced from 44 days to 33
days, a 25% improvement.
Based on this initiative, all material and tool
requirements are assembled in carts and kits,
ready to be delivered to their work station which
saves time needed to gather the tools.
This initiative prevented the loss or damage
of these materials that might result from
transferring them from the warehouse to
various work stations. They are also organized in
accordance with assembly work flow, reducing
the required time needed to assemble the
empennage ribs.
KAIZEN
Following the success of the Kaizen activities
conducted on the A330 Aileron Assembly line
during the first quarter of 2015, the Kaizen
Promotion Office (KPO) has launched two new
workshops within Production: Boeing Rib CNC
Process as well as A350 Flap Support Fairing
Production Preparation Process. The Aileron
Assembly project looked at the establishment
of the supermarket as well as Mizusumashi
(a technicians who is dedicated to provide the
aerospace technicians with the materials they
need and deliver them at the assembly line).
The next two projects will continue to introduce
different tools and philosophies used by Strata’s
Kaizen Consultant, Shingijutsu. of the large overhead crane which is shared
among three CNC machines. The challenge
the team faced was due to the weight of the
Boeing CNC tools, about 140 kilograms each,
making them too heavy for the team to carry by
hand. Three potential solutions were determined
and simulated by using cardboard models, which
allowed the team to show different designs, test
and improve solutions.
After testing all proposed ideas, the team
members agreed to adopt the most sustainable
one. The team used metal piping and air powered
motors to make a lifting table which could bring
the heavy metal CNC fixtures into the machine
and put them into place. This process was done
within one day, installed into the CNC machine
and tested several times, each time small
changes were made to make it easier for the
operators to load and unload the fixtures. By studying the process of loading and unloading
the fixtures, and implementing changes, the team
was able to reduce the loading and unloading time
from 40 minutes to 5 minutes, with a process that
is easier and safer than using the overhead crane. The permanent solution for the proposal has been
designed and will be implemented soon. In coordination with Hisham Ahmed from Boeing,
the KPO launched the first workshop within the
CNC area in May. The aim of the workshop was
to reduce the time required to load the Boeing
777 Ribs on and off the CNC machine by 50%. As with all Kaizen workshops, the team began
by determining what the ‘current state’ of the
process was, what work would be required to
change the tools within the CNC machine, how
long it would take, what are the wastes and what
improvements can be made to the process. The project team quickly identified that in order
to make a significant impact in loading and
unloading the Boeing 777 ribs within the CNC
area, they would have to eliminate the use

The department of Non-Destructive Testing, in
collaboration with a local supplier, has managed
to re-engineer certain spare parts for Strata’s
multi-axis C-Scan ultrasonic equipment. This
is considered a major accomplishment, as it
enables Strata to contribute to the local economy
while improving the technical capacity needed
for Strata to pursue various technical and
economic advantages without needing to import
these spare parts.
Raya Saeed Al Shamsi has achieved her
certification as Level 1 NDT Inspector, after
completing the accreditation process in
accordance with the international standards
EN4179 and NAS410. This achievement
distinguishes Raya as the first female Emirati to

Assurance (SQA)
14
As of the first of April 2015, Ahmed Salem
Mubarak Bulteour, who joined Strata in December
2011 as a Supplier Quality Engineer, was
assigned as Head of Supplier Quality Assurance.
The effective management of the supply chain
is considered one of the most crucial factors to
guarantee the success of Strata. The cooperation
between the supplier quality department and
procurement plays a pivotal role in maintaining
the supply chain and improving its performance
in delivering materials on time and according to
specific quality requirements.
Production Programs
Since Strata began production just four and a
half years ago, it has delivered 454 shipsets of
aerostructure components to some of the world’s
leading aircraft manufacturers.
This quarter, Strata delivered its final shipset of
the traditional Airbus A330 flap track fairings
while beginning production on the newly
designed A330 fairings known as the WV80.
All of this could not be accomplished without
the efforts of the aerospace technicians and
the employees working in the fabrication and
assembly units under the leadership of Saif Al
Dahbashi and Tony Williams.
During a workshop organized to promote Kaizen
methodology in the production of Airbus A330
ailerons, Strata demonstrated its ability to
produce all of the ailerons using the same set
of tools.
The teams in fabrication and assembly boast
a 34% emiratization rate and have achieved
quality levels that exceeded even the most
stringent international standards.
Strata also continued production on the
modified flap track fairings for the Airbus A380.
Modifications are known as TEEM 6, TEEM 4
and TEEM3, replacing Mid Fairing 6, Mid Fairing
4 and Mid Fairing 3, respectively.

Building a Local Supply Chain
Exploring Strata’s role in the UAE aerospace supply chain
Interview with:
Sarah Al Ahbabi
Senior Procurement Manager.
In line with Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030,
Strata is working to support the development of
a global aerospace hub and to build a diversified
and sustainable knowledge-based economy
in Abu Dhabi. In its first five years, Strata has
already made meaningful contributions towards
Vision 2030. Through the adoption of the highest
international quality standards and on-time
delivery, Strata has positioned itself as a key
contributor to the local and global aerospace
industry.
In a strategic approach to building a local supply
chain, Strata’s supplier list consists of over
50% locally based companies. This approach
supports the development of local SME’s and
entrepreneurs and indirectly grants them greater
access to the global aerospace industry.
16
What is a local supply chain?
A local supply chain is built when all
requirements of an industrial sector are located
in one geographical location. The development of
Nibras Al Ain Aerospace Park is facilitating one
such supply chain for the aerospace industry
in Abu Dhabi. Through the unified vision of our
shareholder, Mubadala, and Abu Dhabi Airport
Company (ADAC), the development of Nibras
supports the creation of a local supply chain, for
Strata and other local aerospace companies, and
works toward the economic vision to position
Abu Dhabi as a reliable global aerospace hub.
What are the benefits for Strata?
Developing a local supply chain serves Strata,
the broader Abu Dhabi and Al Ain communities
and supports strong economic growth. This
manifests itself in a variety of different ways:
for the local community. It supports local talent
and resource development and, as a result,
attracts skilled individuals from across the
region. In support of developing a local supply
chain, Strata is expanding the nation’s aerospace
capabilities, and is growing its skilled workforce.
2. Achieving economic benefits:
Reducing the cost of production is highly
dependent on the availability of raw materials,
a solid workforce, and additional resources.
Through Nibras Al Ain Aerospace Park, Strata
will be able to work with other Nibras tenants to
reduce production costs – passing the benefit on
to customers and supporting margins for longterm sustainably.
3. Building a reputation:
1. Creating job opportunities for UAE youth:
Local supply chains have the opportunity to build
up distinguished commercial reputations in their
respective industries.
Establishing an industrial supply chain in a given
geographical area provides many opportunities
If run efficiently, this increases the global industry
demand for locally manufactured products.
4. Facilities:
The establishment of a certain industrial
sector in a geographic area contributes to the
establishement of many companies interested
in providing supportive facilities for this industry.
For example, banks and financial institutions will
open branches in this area in order to meet the
needs of the industrial sector.
Thus, industrial companies in this area could
obtain credit facilities in a timely manner.
Transportation companies will also provide
logistical means used by these different
industrial companies to transport raw materials
and products. Moreover, insurance companies
will provide services for fire and accident risks
more easily and at a lower cost.
benefit from the by-products of the particular
industry, appear too. For example, establishing
a metal industry contributes to creating the
need for raw materials and tools suppliers, in
addition to companies that deal with waste, and
downstream industries associated with metal.
What are the challenges?
I. Difficulty of Entering the Aerospace
Industr y:
The aerospace industry involves a range of
complex and international quality standards.
It relies on patents and intellectual property, in
addition to a specialized and limited suppliers’
base. All of that poses difficulty for SMEs seeking
to enter this sector.
5. Sub-Industries:
II. Infrastructure:
When a certain industry is located in a given
geographical area, it contributes to having many
sub-industries that supply machinery, tools and
other materials. Other industries, that could
Companies that are active in the aerospace
industry need large productivity in order to bear
the high cost associated with the manufacturing.
Plus, it should be able to afford any delay in return
on investment. This reduces the number of local
suppliers who are interested in participating in
the tenders offered by aerospace companies.
III. Lack of Qualified Local Talents:
The lack of qualified and trained personnel,
especially in the precision engineering in
aerospace industry-one of the newest sectors in
the country, is a big obstacle to local suppliers
who wish to enter the aerospace industry
market.
IV. The Long Required Time for the accreditation
of a new supplier
New suppliers consume a long time trying to
get an accreditation from the world’s leading
aerospace manufacturers, where they have to
study the designs, mechanisms and provide
capabilities, which in return raise the cost.
Consequently, these reasons are what might
prevent many suppliers from pursuing this
industry.

Health,Safety & Management System
Significant certification
milestones for Strata
Strata has recently achieved two important
certifications in the areas of occupational health
and safety management systems. The first is ISO
14001, International Standard for Environmental
Management. We successfully completed the
main Key 2 audit against ISO 14001.
The second is OHSAS 18001, the International
Standard for Occupational Health and Safety. This
was received during the first quarter of 2015 and
as of April 1st, Strata is fully accredited against
both standards. The accreditation lasts for three
years with the first annual surveillance survey
due in January 2016.
A number of Strata employees were also trained
on EMERGO, a disaster management tool that
allows them to manage disasters at the work
place without affecting the daily job activities.
The HSE department plans to widen the scope
of this training to include the high ranking
employees who might participate in disaster
management in case they occur.
Training on the Occupational
Safety and Health Management
The department renewed the certificates of
paramedics and employees who were trained
on fire risk assessment and firefighting. In the
coming few months, the department will also
conduct training for the emergency response
team at Strata, using EMERGO.
Asignificant number of Strata employees
received specialized training on the occupational
safety and health management systems.
During the last quarter of this year, Mohammed
Al Riyami, HSE Senior Officer, will train all Strata
employees on firefighting tools.
This is a significant milestone for Strata and could
only be gained with everyone’s commitment.

(IOSH) for official accreditation on their
attainment of the Managing Safely course. Both
the HSE department and the institute of IOSH will
continue to provide training for more employees
to manage and work in accordance with IOSH
standards.
In April, Strata nominated the first 15 candidates
to Institute of Occupational Safety and Health
Occupational Health
A team of NMC Specialty Hospital visited Strata
and provided occupational health tests to the
employees to ensure a healthy workforce.
These selective tests included blood pressure,
blood sugar, blood cholesterol and body mass
index. This demonstrates Strata’s sincere efforts
to encourage its employees to adopt a healthy
lifestyle.
The department intends to continue its
cooperation with the NMC Specialty Hospital to
grant a number of initiatives in this field for all
Strata staff throughout the year. This may include
initiatives to help employees quit smoking, adopt
a healthy diet and maintain health and fitness.

Information Technology
The Information Technology (IT) department at
Strata has transfered e-mail and Blackberry data
to “MDC” business management servers. All
Strata users are now connected to the new email
and Blackberry server.
Along with this, end user migration also started
and they have successfully migrated the finance;
Learning, Development and Emiratization;
KPO and IT departments to MDC business
management servers.
The new software package from “MDC”
company includes Windows 7 Enterprise and
Microsoft Office 2010, which enhance the e-mail
service, Microsoft Outlook, in addition to other
Microsoft Office programs.
The package also offers the “Skype for Business”
program, known as Lync, which internal makes
communication accessible to Strata staff.
The program allows for efficient intra-office
communication, enabling staff to accomplish
their tasks more effectively.
In order to use company information systems
safely, the department has launched a two factor
authentication system for employees, allowing
staff to access Strata’s information systems
outside the workplace.
The two factor authentication process asks the
user to log in first with his/her user name and
password and then he/she is required to enter
an eight digit code along with a PIN number
selected by the user. If an employee does not
possess a Blackberry device he/she can apply
for an encryption tool from MDC’s Business
Management Services office in Strata.
The department has also started sending
phishing scam emails to various departments to
check the level of staff awareness of information
security.
The program was launched at the beginning of
this year and results have shown that Strata staff
are better aware of how to recognize fraudulent
emails.
A training course is available to all employees on
phishing scams and the security risk they pose.
Information Security:
As part of the efforts to enhance information
security in Strata, the team will launch an
awareness campaign to reduce risks associated
with information by changing the behavior of
employees.
The management has formed a special group for
information security in Strata, the group includes
representatives from various departments to
ensure information security consistency across
the company.
