FISHING GUIDE 1997/98 A Guide to day ticket fisheries in the Midlands A G U ID E FOR ANG LERS W ELCOME "I am privileged to have the o p p o rtu n ity o f introducing the latest ed itio n o f this ever p opular Fishing Guide published by the M idlands Region o f the Environm ent Agency. I believe this Guide, together w ith o th e r lines o f com m unication such as the ‘Fisheries News’ magazine w hich is freely available, offers reassurance to anglers and o th e r river users that the Agency’s c o m m itm en t to safeguarding and im proving the w ater environm ent is as strong as ever. I can assure you that there is a real awareness w ith in the Agency o f the vital environm ental role anglers play w h ich can be enhanced still fu rth e r by anglers continuing to b o th support the w ork o f Fisheries staff and to provide in form ation on the health o f o u r rivers. Real benefits have resulted from this p artn ersh ip to date including im provem ents to fish habitat, river w ater quality and river flows. This partnership is one w h ich the Agency wishes to encourage and considers m ust continue if together we are to secure the long term w ell-being o f our fisheries for b o th present and future generations. I ask all recipients o f this guide to help the Agency respond to the environm ental challenges w hich lie ahead by keeping us inform ed about any potential problem s identified.” Best wishes and tight lines. For Fisheries purposes, the area covered and officers responsible remain the same as those encompassed by the form er NRA Severn and Trent catchment boundaries (see map overleaf). W ith over 7000 km o f river, almost 1000 km o f canal and an increasing num ber o f stillwaters, the Region contains an extremely varied and important fisheries resource. E n v ir o n m e n t Ag en c y All the major rivers and canals support valuable coarse fisheries along much o f their length. The Midlands Region contains some o f the largest and most im portant rivers in the country Rivers such as the Trent, Avon and Severn have all hosted national and international angling championships. O ther rivers such as the Teme, Dove and Derwent are prized for individual catches o f barbel, chub, salmon and trout. Many smaller rivers provide good sport for both the serious and occasional angler and all play a part in contributing the quality o f life o f many people. Not only is fishing without a licence a criminal offence, carrying a m axim um fine o f £2500, it also deprives the Agency o f the funds it needs to carry out vital work. The Fisheries section o f the Agency is becoming increasingly reliant on incom e from licence sales as Government funding is reduced (see Fig 1). Anglers w ho do not buy a licence are spoiling the sport for others and threaten the long-term health o f our fisheries. W H A T DOES TH E EA DO FOR FI S H ER IE S ? Under the Environment Act 1995 (and formerly the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act, 1975) the Environment Agency has a statutory duty to maintain, improve and develop fisheries. We do this for the benefit o f anglers, commercial netsmen and the general public. W H A T DOES T H I S M EAN ? • We can use various legal powers to protect fish and fisheries from over-exploitation and other damaging activities • We can develop a program m e to im prove those fisheries which have previously been damaged through development or neglect • We can increase the availability o f fishing opportunities, both for recreational and comm ercial fishing T H E E N V I R O N M E N T AGEN CY WIL L A C H I E V E T H E S E AIMS THR OUGH; ENFORCEMENT Our team o f highly skilled Fishery Inspectors and Water Bailiffs patrol th e reg io n ’s fisheries, m aking sure that anglers and comm ercial netsm en have valid licences and are abiding by the necessary byelaws. In 1 9 9 5 /6 Agency staff, challenged 40,850 anglers in this region and this resulted in over 1000 licence and byelaw prosecutions. Make sure you get a licence before you go fishing. In addition, specially trained staff protect Salmon against poachers. Nowadays, poachers are often form ed into highly organised criminal gangs. FISHERIES & THE AGENCY _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ M M M M M M M M M M M M M L _ mnc A G U ID E fo r a n g l e r s Under the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act, 1975 we ensure REGULATION that fishing and fisheries continue to exist together on sustainable basis. It is an offence to stock fish into any water w ithout perm ission and laws are aimed at preventing the spread of diseases and exotic fish species. Anyone wishing to introduce fish into any watercourse or stillwater should contact their local Environment Agency office. £21.1 million Fig 1. Total Regional Expenditure 9 6 /9 7 To protect and improve fisheries, we m ust first assess the general M ONI TOR ING nature and health o f the fish stocks. Agency scientists carried out surveys at 426 sites across the region in 19 9 5 /6 using electric fishing, netting and echo-sounding techniques. We are dedicated to improving the water quality o f rivers and canals. A vital part o f the work o f the Fisheries departm ent is to make sure that the needs o f fish and fish stocks are catered for in water quality im provement programmes. In addition, Fisheries staff are investigating new methods o f combating the effects o f acid rain on upland tributaries. WATER Q UA LI TY IM PR O VE M E NT S FISHERIES & THE AGENCY A G U ID E FOR A N G L E R S P H Y S I C A L HABI TAT IMPROVEMENTS The physical nature o f a river is as im portant to fish as the quality o f the water. Many rivers have been canalised in the past to speed land drainage and help navigation. Fisheries staff are trying to restore as many rivers as possible to a more natural state. This is done by constructing meanders, riffles, groynes and fish passes to improve the opportunities for fish spawning and survival. B . Fisheries Expenditure - Environment Agency Midlands Region RE ARI NG AND STOCKING Our coarse fish farm, located at Calverton, Nottinghamshire is the only one o f its kind in Europe and produces 300,000 high quality dace, chub, barbel and roach each year. These are needed to replace fish lost through pollution and to give improving river fisheries a “kick-start” . This region also rears 100,000 salmon fry each year w hich are stocked into the River Severn and its tributaries. Unfortunately, w hether it be accidental, deliberate or due to natural FISH M O R T A L IT IE S causes, pollution does occur and does kill a large num ber o f fish each year. We try to attend every reported pollution incident, to establish the cause o f the problem, to take action and decide w hether FISHERIES & THE AGENCY ____________________________________ __ ___ n M M M M n H n M M M M M L F O A G U ID E R ang lers to prosecute. Where possible, fish are moved to other waters for safety and returned w hen the water quality has been restored. In 1995/6, there were 234 such incidents, accounting for 105,000 fish deaths. This was a large and unwelcome increase on the previous year and was mainly due to the prolonged w arm dry summer. Large am ounts o f p ollution were w ashed o u t o f Birmingham’s storm sewers by sever storms at the height o f the dry spell. The low sum mer flows in several rivers, but principally the Tame and Trent, meant that there was very litde dilution and there were several major fish kills as a result o f dissolved oxygen being stripped out o f the water. Whilst prom pt action by the Environment Agency saved a large num ber o f fish, this incident has set back the re-establishment o f the Tame as an im portant fishery. If you see pollution or any activity w hich may damage the w ater environm ent, please contact the Environm ent Agency on its Freephone Emergency N um ber - 0800 80 70 60. We are consulted over development plans and seek to influence Local Authorities over proposals for buildings, roads or other land uses to protect fisheries and other aspects o f the river environment. All the above activities cost money (see Fig.2) and in 1996/97 we spent over £2 million on vital Fisheries work in the Midlands PLANNING AND D E VE L O PM EN T CO N TRO L THE A NG L ER S ROLE Region. This service costs each angler the price of a licence - just £16.00 for the vast majority - and with guidance from the Regional Fisheries Advisory Committee, we take great care that this income is spent in the most cost-effective way. We appreciate and are encour aged by the high degree o f support we receive from anglers, in terms o f licence sales and the inform ation provided by the “eyes and ears” o f the river bank. The well-being o f fishing and fisheries is an im portant concern o f the new Environment Agency and is dependant on the goodwill and support o f anglers - for the future o f your sport, please make sure you have a valid licence. The annual rod licence is valid from the 1st April, or the date o f purchase if later, up to the follow ing J ls t March. Licences are available from all Post Offices. 8 REMEMBER ACU10i ANGLERS CODE FO R A N G L E R S COURTESY Please take into account other river users and:• Take care not to block the footpath w ith your fishing tackle • Look o u t for others w hen casting • Appreciate some boats may need to come close to the bank CO N S E R V A T I O N Conservation o f our rivers benefits everyone especially anglers so:• Take all your tackle hom e. Hooks and line are lethal to wildlife • Don’t leave food or bait w hen you leave This encourages verm in and increases the health risk • Leave yo u r peg tidy Litter, especially plastic will stay around for years and is a danger to wildlife and livestock • Help conserve fish stocks by following the NFA keep net code and m atch rules SAFETY Water can be very dangerous - do not take unnecessary risks. Fishing near overhead powerlines can be extremely dangerous - do not take unnecessary risks. More information can be obtained from the National Federation o f Anglers. HE A LTH Weil’s Disease (Leptospirosis) - All rivers and natural bodies contain pathogens w hich can be harm ful to health. In particular, the leptospiral bacteria w hich cause Weil's disease can be present wherever rodents are found specially near o r in water. Weil’s disease can be dangerous and in extreme cases can result in serious illness or death. The infection is contracted mainly through open cuts and abrasion in the skin. Make sure all cuts are covered w ith a w aterproof plaster or w aterproof clothing. The disease often feels like flu in the early stages and early advice should be sought from your doctor if you develop the symptoms following a fishing trip. 9 FISHING LICENCES To fish any waters w ithin the Midlands Region every angler aged twelve years or older must possess a current Environment Agency Rod Fishing Licence. W ith the appropriate licence you can fish w ith rod and line any w here in England and Wales but remember, you will also need to obtain perm ission to fish where necessary, from the owners or tenants o f the fishing rights. A num ber of fishing rights owners offer day ticket waters and many o f these appear in the following pages. If you are aged 12 to 16 years, 65 years or over, or receive invalidity benefit or severe disability allowance you are eligible for a concessionary licence. You are also eligible if you receive a war pension w hich includes unem ployability supplem ent. Children under the age o f 12 do not require a licence. Licences can be obtained from every Post Office in England and Wales and are available in each o f the categories below for Salmon/Sea Trout and Non-M igratory Trout/Coarse Fish. — y . In addition, you will find that angling clubs and fishery owners may impose additional, stricter regulations on their waters. Byelaw booklets are available free of charge from the Environment Agency please phone o r w rite to your local area office or the regional headquarters. Whilst some byelaws are national and apply throughout England and Wales, many vary from one region to another so as to accommodate local needs. Please make sure you are aware of and abide by the byelaws for the region in which you are fishing. CONSULTATIVES The Severn Fisheries Consultative Council provides a means for representatives of angling clubs and other fishery interests to discuss matters affecting fisheries. Meetings are held at Birmingham Angler’s Association headquarters on four Saturday’s throughout the year with fisheries officers from the Environment Agency in attendance. The views of the SFCC are taken into account by the Regional Fisheries Advisory Committee of the Midlands Region o f the Environment Agency. The Severn Fisheries Consultative Council is also a member of the National Association o f Fisheries & Angling Consultatives. For further details for membership contact the Secretary, Mr D Evason, School House, Ullenhall, Solihull, West Midlands B95 SPA. For the Trent catchments, a similar funcUon is performed by the Trent District Anglers Consultative Association. For further details for membership contact the Secretary, Mr R N Walsh, 5 Derby Road, Homesford. Matlock, Derbyshire DE4 5HL. Some coarse fish, such as carp, have developed characteristics w h ich enable th em to e x p lo it stillw aters very efficiently. Carp (Cyprinus carpio) are native to Asia bin were thought to be introduced to this country by m onks in the m iddle ages as food supply. Kept in monastery 'slew ponds', carp provided an essential source of prolcin during the long w inter m onths. Variants from the ‘common* form include 'leather' (n o scales) and 'mirror' (few v.large stales) and in this country grow to over SOIbs in weight. Carp enjoy rich warm water conditions and can tolerate surprising low oxygen levels. Carp fishing is now a highly individual and specialised sport bin many people enjoy the antics o f fish al spawning time when they splash about in the reeds and weeds. Females lan produce over 2 m illion eggs in a single season and both sexes can live 60 years or m ore. . . ■ i,, COARSE STILLWATERS A lan Reynolds Evesbatch Fisheries Allestree Lake Nearest Town Evesbatch Nearest Town Derby Size 2 lakes Carp, Roach Size 11.27 Acres Carp, Roach Main species Suitable for disabled Tickets available Information from Yes Main species Suitable for disabled Alan Reynolds Tackle Tickets available Shop Tel: 01905 422107 As above Information from Tel: 01332 367800 Size Main species Suitable for disabled Tickets available Information from Derby City Council Tel: 01332 2931 1 1 Alvaston Lake Alrewas Hayes Nearest Town No Park Rangers on bank Nearest Town Size Main species Suitable for disabled Tickets available Lichfield 1.4 Acres Bream, Pike No On bank Alrewas Hayes Information from Tel: 01283 790224 Derby 5 Acres Carp, Roach Yes Park Rangers on bank Tel: 01332 367800 Derby City Council Tel: 01332 2931 1 1 Alvecote Astw ood Fishery N earest T ow n Size M ain species S u itable fo r d isabled T ickets available In fo rm a tio n fro m Alvecote N earest Tow n Size M ain species Suitable for disabled T ickets available In fo rm a tio n from Carp, Perch No On bank Coventry & District AC Tel: 01203 418893 37 Droitwich 2 Acres Carp, Bream Yes On bank Astwood Fishery Tel: 01905 770092 STILLWATERS COARSE Attenborough Gravel Pits A ttenborough South Nearest Town Size Beeston Nearest Town Long Eaton 24 Acres Roach, Bream Size Main species Suitable for disabled Several pools Roach, Bream No Tickets available On bank; Trevor Lowe Main species Suitable for disabled Tickets available Information from No On bank; Trevor Lowe Tel: 01 15 9733245; Local tackle shops Leisure Sports Angling Information from Tel: 01932 564872 Tel: 0115 9733245; Local tackle shops Leisure Sports Angling Tel: 01932 564872 Bank House Hotel Lake Nearest Town Size Main species Suitable for disabled Tickets available Information from Barby Mill Pools Worcester 40 Acres Carp No Bank House Hotel Tel: 01886 833557 As above Basford Coarse Fishery Nearest Town Rugby Size Main species Suitable for disabled 2 Acres Carp, Tench Yes Tickets available On bank Information from Barby Mill Pools Tel: 01788 579521 S' Mill Farm Fishery G ilm orton, Lutterw orth, Leics. Anglers can help to protect fish stocks by keeping an eye open for pollution. If any is spotted, please call the local waterway office or dial 100 and ask for Freephone Canals.
