Breathtaking landscapes, endless roads, sea, mountains, rivers, large cities and villages in the middle of nowhere. Hundreds and hundreds of miles, days spent riding your motorbike to enjoy all these marvels. However, perhaps not everyone knows that there is a region that offers just as much variety, the sea and the mountains can be reached from any starting point in a couple of hours at the most. This is Friuli Venezia Giulia, a borderland with thousands of different facets. Just 150 kilometres to go from the golden beaches of Lignano to the mountains on the border with Austria, crossing historic towns, unspoilt rivers, wonderful hilly territories and roads deep in the countryside. A land to be crossed by motorcycle, enjoying the landscapes and the scents that change continuously, like in a dream. Whichever setting you prefer, you will find it here. So, why choose, when you can have everything? Have a nice journey! The first is the Castle of Susans, which can be seen from several kilometres away in its splendid banked access staircase. Proceeding in the direction of the Mount of Ragogna (rich in tourist paths that follow the paths of the First World War) you will enjoy the views from the rise in all directions. We suggest that you drive along the hairpin bend that goes down towards the castle and that allows to follow the course of the Tagliamento river as far as the bridge of Dignano. Some more bends and you will be near the Castle of Ragogna. Preceded by a small church that includes an old, charming graveyard, you will find, standing on the mount, the Castle of Ragogna. Splendidly renovated, it is used as a centre for conferences and cultural events of various kinds. A few steps from the Piazza del Comune it is also possible to visit the First World War Museum. Many are the monuments proposed by the tour, in particular in San Daniele del Friuli where you cannot miss a visit to the many ham factories that often include spaces for tasting and retailing. A point of great interest is the historical Guarneriana Library, situated in the town centre under the loggia. It is Friuli’s most ancient library and one of the first institutes of public reading in Italy. You will also find many taverns and inns that propose typical local menus, always accompanied by the best wines from the Collio area. The visits continue in Arcano Superiore, a spectacular village with a medieval atmosphere, you will have the feeling you have ended up in a typical Tuscan postcard landscape. The Castle of Arcano can be visited on weekends but if you are lucky (the owners are often there) you can have a walk in the garden around it, without booking. Proceed towards Fagagna, one of Italy’s most beautiful towns, of whose Castle of Fagagna unfortunately only a few ruins have remained (the most ancient part dates back to the 11th century) and the famous Cjase Cocel (Museum of rural life). From now on every village has its stronghold. Villalta, whose castle, belonging to the homonymous lords and already documented in the early 13th century, often staged harsh battles owing both to its strategic position and to the turbulence of its owners. In 1453 it was enfeoffed to the Torre Valsassina family, who enlarged it significantly, above all with the construction of the imposing Renaissance wing close to the ancient donjon. The Castle of Moruzzo, originally ruled over by spouses depending on the patriarchal gastald of Fagagna, in 1200 part of it was enfeoffed to Odarlico di Tricano. Still of private property, it is used partly as workshops and partly as a residence. The donjon on the hill is surrounded by large walls, spaced out by small battlemented towers. The construction of the castle of Colloredo di Monte Albano was started in 1302; it will be enlarged over the centuries, yet undergoing a slow replacement of the defence characteristics with residential TOUR OF THE CASTLES LOCATION OSOPPO CENTRE KM INFORMATION 1.0 km At the fork turn right into the SS463 road (2 km on the right Fortress of Osoppo) Rivoli Restaurant 3.7 km RIVOLI 4.8 km 8.5 km MAIANO 10.0 km 10.5 km CIMANO MURIS 13.0 km 15.0 km 17.5 km 18.0 km 19.0 km SAN PIETRO 22.7 km 25.0 km 27.7 km SAN DANIELE DEL FRIULI 28.0 km 28.5 km Leave the road to Udine - Buja on the left, go straight on Straight on after the roundabout, Trattoria Ai Pioppi on the left ARCANO FORK 33.0 km Turn right into the Strada degli Obelischi ARCANO SUPERIORE 34.0 km 35.5 km Castle of Arcano and farm, retail At the S. It is an extremely varied and picturesque route amid woods, streams, lakes and interesting natural sites, such as the caves of Pradis, the Covera canyongorge, etc. Among the most interesting sites, Anduins with its sulphurous sources, Poffabro (one of Italy’s most beautiful towns), Frisanco with Carlin’s miniature museum, Primo Carnera’s villa in Sequals, where there are some photos of his past as a motorcyclist. The itinerary then goes back to the west part of the Tagliamento river, where we suggest that you visit the Fortress of Osoppo before ending the tour: the site features interesting remains dating back to Prehistory, as well as the defence complex that was the last resistance against the Habsburgs before Venice. POFFABRO 106.5 km › Moto Mas via San Vito, 17 - 33034 Fagagna (UD) tel +39 0432 800442 Then there is Ovaro, whose Parish Church of Gorto, situated on a hillock to the north of the hamlet of Agrons, was mentioned for the first time in 1119, but derives from a 4th-century complex. On the road you will find characteristic places like Bordano, the town of butterflies with its famous zoological museum. You will then run along the Lago dei Tre Comuni (Lake of the Three Municipalities), a green pearl set in the Carnic Pre-Alps and, on the way back, you will also cross the famous Arta Terme, an important spa town. Richly decorated by Giovanni da Udine in the mid 16th century, the famous small studio of the Castle of Colloredo is one of the most significant artisticdecorative examples of the Region. The castle is also well-known because the writer and follower of Garibaldi Ippolito Nievo lived here in the nineteenth century; he is the famous author of Le Confessioni di un italiano. It is the seat of the Comunità Collinare del Friuli (Friuli’s Hilly Community) and of the Consorzio per la Salvaguardia dei Castelli Storici del Friuli Venezia Giulia (Consortium for the Protection of Friuli Venezia Giulia’s Historic Castles). The Castle of Cassacco (which dates back to 1202) in the Middle Ages was contended several times by many feudal families, among whom the Savorgnans, who had it for alternate periods. In the Middle Ages the castle, perhaps due to its structure or to its position, was not considered very important from a strategic point of view. It was only grazed by the bloody facts of arms that affected most of Friuli’s fortalices: for this reason it was not seriously damaged and maintained its castle aspect almost unchanged. Last, but not least, the Castle of Treppo Grande, which dates back to the second half of the 12th century and is documented as belonging to Heidenrico de Zelaco. The Zegliaccos became powerful, but in the 14th century the patriarch deprived them of their titles (which they later reacquired, but they died out around the end of the fifteenth century). The large complex of the castle will soon be restored to how it was before the earthquake of 1976. The tour will then go back to the starting point, Osoppo, where you will find the homonymous fortress. Always a crucial point in the defence from invasions that went southwards, it became very important in the Celtic and Roman ages. Many significant events took place at the stronghold, among which the Lombard defence against the Avars, the defence of Venice against the Austrians in the War of the League of Cambrai, etc. It also staged various fights during the First World War. › Gitielle via Udine, 192 33034 Fagagna (UD) tel +39 0432 801155 Turn left at the stop sign climb to the town centre Turn right at the stop sign (leave the town centre with the castle, library, on the left) At the fork Hospital on the left, at the following stop sign, go straight on towards Fagagna Picaron Ham Factory, tasting and retail 29.0 km Osoppo, Rive d’Arcano, Fagagna, S. Travelling towards the sea you will get to Aquileia, which at the end of the 4th century was the fourth town of the Roman Empire owing to the importance of its offices and institutions. An open-air museum, Aquileia would need some days to be explored and admired in all its beauty. Going more south, you will be driving on a strip of land surrounded by the Lagoon of Grado, and the effect is definitely extremely charming. Although motorcycle tourists will be attracted by the beach, by the many spa services and by the historical heritage, such as the Sanctuary of Madonna di Barbana, the tour will continue towards Monfalcone. From here, 20 km of level and wide roads, in some stretches surrounded by the lagoon and in some other stretches by green fields where our sight gets lost on the horizon. From green, gentle plains you will pass to the sharpness of the Karst rocks that surround the roads towards the next destination, the castle of Duino. Here bends are in rapid series and always on perfect asphalt. Watch out when entering Duino, the roads get narrower and traffic is intense. The castle is worth a visit during this interesting tour. Proceed towards Gorizia, on the border with Slovenia. This banked road is rich in views of rare beauty and the ups and downs with nice bends will make the journey lively. From the centre of Gorizia, going north towards Cividale, the landscape becomes softer in the gentle ups and downs of the Collio, rich in vineyards. If you are keen on the history of American motor sports, you are suggested to make a short detour on the SS351 road, in the direction of Farra d’Isonzo, where you will find the Ford Gratton Museum, dedicated to Henry Ford, where you will have the chance to admire a reconstruction of the first assembly line in the history of car making, that of the legendary Ford T of 1913, as well as an endless series of vehicles coming from Fo.Mo.Co. Here Paolo Gratton, a historic dealer of the brand, has set up the first and only Ford Museum existing in Europe. Going back to the proposed itinerary, Turn left into Via Nazionale Turn right into the first side road, road signs to Camino proceed towards Cividale, the last, but not less important, town of great historical and architectural interest of this tour. Past the famous Ponte del Diavolo (Devil’s Bridge) and, after a glance at the town centre, proceed towards Udine. About fifteen kilometres more to the south-west you will cross Buttrio with its beautiful Dragon and Toppo Florio villas. From here on you will cross small towns like Percoto, Trivignano, Clauiano and Sottoselva, before reaching the point of arrival of the tour. We would like to mention the plenty of taverns that offer tasting of DOC (Denomination of Controlled Origin) wines in Clauiano. After crossing the Porta Cividale Gate, in Palmanova, you will get back to the starting point after travelling 140 km. From Viale Europa turn into the SS354 road up to the traffic lights of Pertegada, where you will turn right. Follow the course of the Stella river crossing small groups of houses and farmhouses, followed by towns like Precenicco and Pescarola, as far as the crossroads with the SP56 road where, turning right, you will proceed towards Palazzolo and as far as Muzzana del Turgnano. At the roundabout take the first exit in the direction of Via Palazzolo, immediately followed by Via Levada. We are again in open countryside. In this stretch of road the buildings are scattered and the lagoon gets closer and closer. Turn left at the first bridge, proceed as far as the crossroads with Strada Bosco Bando and go south. You will see the first houses of Marano Lagunare as you enter the town. You can stop anywhere and visit the Canal Novo Valley Nature Reserve around you, or keep driving up to the last available stretch of asphalt road, practically a strip of land on the sea. Here you will see the typical straw casoni huts, a typical building of the lagoon. You have various options to go back: follow the same roads backwards or follow the main roads, in any case crossing Muzzana and Palazzolo, then proceeding on the SS14 road and on the central SS354 road, which will lead you back to the starting point, Lignano Sabbiadoro. At the roundabout go towards Bibione along Viale Tagliamento and, once you have got near the overpass over the river, go straight on in Via Volton, in the direction of Latisana. Keep going up along the river across the open countryside of the Basso Friuli area, often alongside pleasant grassy embankments. Along the SP7 road you will cross Latisanotta, Ronchis and Fraforeano, then turn left into the SP39 road in the direction of Codroipo. The road is smooth and is always bordered by large countryside areas. You will cross the small towns of Canussio, Madrisio, Varmo, Roveredo, Rividischia and Muscletto, up to San Martino, where you will leave the SP39 road turning right towards Villa Manin. The last spectacular straight stretch of road, called “Stradon Blance”, leads straight to our destination, the residence of the last Doge of Venice. Napoleon Bonaparte lived here for about two months in 1797. We will go back towards Lignano Sabbiadoro: from Villa Manin head east turning into the near SS252 road, commonly known as Strada Napoleonica. About ten kilometres before turning right towards Flumignano, more precisely towards the hamlet of Sant’Andrat. Go on until reaching a dirt road, towards the beautiful Mondelli Stable: a real wood and stone ranch/pub surrounded by nature, which is much appreciated by motorcyclists and where you can refresh yourself and, if you wish, go for a horse ride as well. The last stretch of this motorcycle tour crosses Castions di Strada, where you will turn into the SS353 road as far as Muzzana del Turgnano. Drive past Palazzolo dello Stella up to the large intersection with the SS354 road, which you will have to follow as far as the point of arrival. RONCHIS FRAFOREANO 17.5 km From P.
