We look forward to sharing more in future issues of WIT Club News, but until then wanted to share the latest. Earlier in the year, we developed a new database that is the heart of more changes to our membership materials and renewal processes. To help streamline the membership process, we recently updated our pricing structure. There is one price for a one-year membership or renewal ($39.95) and one price for a three-year new membership or renewal ($99.85). This membership still includes all previous benefits such as discounts on products and services from Winnebago plus new things like a $20 voucher to use on any merchandise at our Winnebago Outdoor store or WinnebagoOutdoor.com as well as at your Area Rep’s WIT Store. Benefits also still include the opportunities for discounts with our vendor partners like SkyMed, Farm and City Insurance Services and Winnebago Outdoor Adventures. We will continue to enhance your membership with more benefits to come in the near future. This edition of WIT Club News is our annual Winnebago Outdoor Adventures issue. We think our Winnebago Outdoor Adventures program is pretty great! After all, WIT Club members have the opportunity to sign up for twenty-three different events in 2015, receive priority reservations and sneak peek information on events, and receive special pricing – 10% savings on adventures and caravans. From weekend getaways to that month-long trip of a lifetime, Winnebago Outdoor Adventures sets the gold standard. But, you don’t have to take it from us…find out why WIT Club members just cannot get enough of our superb adventures and caravans! “You planned it, we came, we enjoyed!” “I enjoyed the camaraderie with new friends, touring schedule, and knowledge of our tour guides.” “Our trip was well organized, stress free and fun. We met a lot of really nice people including our great hosts!” As always, safe travels WIT Club members, and enjoy the beautiful fall colors! -WIT Club Staff 4 witclub.com WIT Club News From Our Western Area Rick & Christy Burke, Western Area Reps checking the WIT Club website for clubs and chapters and reading the magazine. We aren’t the only ones either. It is quite surprising when we go to your club and find…nothing! If you are looking for members and you aren’t sending in articles and an occasional photo then you are missing the boat. If you aren’t posting your schedule and up-to-date contact information online then maybe you are sinking your boat! So if you have outings still scheduled for this year or are working on next year’s schedule, please send these to Brynn Daniels ASAP! [email protected]. Even if everything isn’t 100% firmed up we want to know your plans. If we can’t find you no one else can either. Rick & Christy Burke We are on the move! Spent a memorable long August weekend in Ruidoso Down, New Mexico with the New Mexico State Club! Located in the southern mountains, this area is known as the real Wild West. The fun started with a tour day carpooling to such fascinating spots as the spectacular Spenser Theater, the Smokey the Bear Museum and burial site and historic Lincoln, New Mexico where Billy the Kid made his reputation. The outing was run by Mary Childress, who excelled at making us welcome and showering us with colorful and handcrafted New Mexico memorabilia. For instance, we learned almost every meal can be improved with “Hatch” chilis and “Portales” peanuts. AND you can combine them both into Chili peanut brittle! Red or Green! We want to thank the Rio Grande Travelers and especially, Stuart Burke, and also Don Burford, president of the Border Cities Travelers and DJ Hoffman, president of the Roadrunners. Kudos on planning a great outing and especially to the Border Cities Travelers who ran it. If you live in New Mexico and are reading this, then consider joining one of these chapters or the state club. They are great fun to travel with and know how to have a good time. From there we went up to northern Montana to be with the WIT Montana October / November 2014 Wilderness chapter. We camped overlooking the beautiful Flathead Lake with the mountains outlining the background. This is just down the road from Glacier National Park (down the road in Montana mileage terms that is.) This group has been together for a long time, and everyone works together so their campouts run very smoothly. They know all the local spots and are very welcoming to newcomers. We learned about local dining delights here too including Huckleberries and Flathead cherries. And we thought Huckleberry was just a friend to Tom Sawyer but instead we learned it’s a berry that makes delicious pies, syrup and jam! If you live in Montana and aren’t already a member of the Wilderness chapter, look them up. They will help you find great campgrounds and learn even more about Montana! Thank you Milt Munson for inviting us and making us welcome. We are on our way to six more outings as we write this: Washington, Oregon, two in California, Nevada and Arizona. Our contacts with these clubs and chapters already tells us more good times are in store. So now we want to ask a favor of you. We need to FIND you and get to your campouts and the way we do that is We have heard from many clubs and chapters that they would like to grow their membership. You are your best advocate! Be visible. Look for Winnebago units in campgrounds you visit. Tell them about your group and invite them to learn more about WIT Club. Give them a business card or tri-fold with your club’s contact info. If your group is having an outing that weekend then ask others to join you for a happy hour or card games. We have heard several times this was how current members found and joined their club. And when you get them there—be sure to extend the welcome by sitting with them or inviting them to mingle with the group. It’s uncomfortable for a new person to come to a dinner and to select a table only to find everyone else sitting at other tables with their friends and club members. Presidents, I challenge you to be the first to ask newcomers to sit at your table! And after the outing, make sure to call or send a note to thank them for coming. As you read this, we will be heading into our time off. That means we will be spending some family time, being with friends, and relaxing. But we know that soon we will be checking the WIT Club site to plan our Spring tour. We look forward to seeing your schedules online and joining you for more fun in 2015! Western Area Reps Rick & Christy Burke Rick: 847-682-7456 Christy: 847-899-0886 [email protected] facebook.com/witclub 5 From Our Central Area Patrick & Janet Wright, Central Area Reps We camped with the NODAK Flickertails at the International Peace Gardens. We were able to walk and drive in both Canada and United States while camping with some fun people. We saw some beautiful scenery with very moving displays and memorials. We enjoyed a camp fire each night along with a trivia game one night. Besides all the good visiting and good food, we exchanged recipes and we were introduced to the pot luck breakfast. Since breakfast is our favorite meal, we really enjoyed the planning, cooking, and eating of it. Patrick & Janet Wright Central Area Reps Patrick & Janet Wright From the north part of North Dakota, we traveled down to Ponca, Nebraska and met the Siouxland River Ramblers in Ponca State Park. One of the members brought some home grown sweet corn for all of us to enjoy. They also introduced us to a local eating establishment, Bob’s Bar, which is one of those places that looks like a dive but has fabulous food and great prices. The park was celebrating Lewis and Clark Days with tomahawk throwing, canoeing, starting fires with steel and flint, archery and many other very interesting activities. The pot luck breakfast concept was practiced by this group as well and we enjoyed it just as much. and were very spry. The Winniehahas are an enthusiastic and fun group. We danced our feet off with them. These state rallies certainly keep us sharp in the costume department! They had fundraisers to benefit the local food pantry and the county animal shelter. We are always impressed with how WIT Club folks support local charities. They know how blessed they are and want to share it. By the time this is printed we would have attended the Wisconsin state meeting in Jefferson WI where they will be celebrating Gemuetlichkeit Days. Then down to the Missouri State Rally with the Minnie Mo Tascas for an out of this world experience and at the end of the month we will be with the Pelican Winnies at the Louisiana State Rally. I am sure we will have a lot to write about after visiting those clubs. It has been fun explaining all the new happenings and changes at the WIT Club office, answering questions members have asked, and listening to their ideas, suggestions, and opinions. We certainly have an active membership. The most expressed concern is the ability to find officers. We attended a Draft Horse Show recently in Britt, Iowa. They hitched the horses in twos, threes, fours, and sixes. In each competition the emcee kept pointing out that the point of adding horses was to spread the weight among more than just one. Sounds like a really good analogy for our WIT chapters and clubs. The difference is that WIT Club people do not have to be hitched by someone else; we have found that they mostly just jump in and volunteer. We have both served at the local and state level. There is some work involved, mostly just organizational, but the fun level and the way other members pitch in when needed outweighs any inconvenience. That is what made me think about the way horses are hitched, we have never been in a position where we felt we were solely responsible for everything. Every time we hit a snag, another member (most of the time more than one) was right there offering to help. Our concern is that without members stepping up to take a leadership role, many of our chapters will begin to dissolve and the fun will begin to diminish. Next we traveled across northern Nebraska to Ft. Robinson State Park in Crawford, Nebraska to camp with the Rushmore Winnies from South Dakota. This was a working fort from the late 1800s until after [email protected] WWII. They have trained horses, mules, and AGAIN with the WOW!!! Each place we visit dogs. It was also a POW camp for Germans we find very unique people and places. We during WWII. There was a lot to look at and leave each place trying to figure out how we do, with trail rides, horse drawn wagon and can come back more often to their chapter/ stage coach rides, and jeep rides just to clubs meetings, we really have a great time name a few attractions. There was lots and with each group making many new friends. lots of history to see and read about. Can’t see it all in one weekend so we will need to The summer weather has been beautiful come back. Hopefully with the Rushmore and very cool for this time of year but here Winnies because I found a great walking we are speeding headlong into the holiday season. It seems time is flying by. Traveling buddy and we really enjoyed it all, from Bucky’s “prairie chicken” at dinner the first around in the central area visiting clubs and chapters reminds me that our WIT Club night, to the wagon ride, to a steak dinner members are as varied and interesting as the on the last night. areas they live in, we love it. We spent a weekend in The Fabulous Fifties with the Minnesota State Club, The After GNR we traveled up to Minnesota Winniehahas, what a blast from the past! and camped with the Southern Honkers We had a sock hop one night then the at Dakota Meadows RV Park in Prior Lake, next night a grand march into prom night. Safe travels and we will see you down Minnesota. Great hosts, good food, in a The prom King and Queen were both 86 the road. beautiful setting. We even tried out a new game that one of the members had seen recently, where two people use a towel “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the held between them and throw a ball into a things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off basket, it takes some coordination between the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade the two. After a few dealer visits we then headed up to North Dakota. winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Patrick: 405-641-9059 Janet: 405-620-7871 6 ~ Mark Twain witclub.com WIT Club News From Our Eastern Area I’m right there with the poetess, Helen Hunt Jackson, who said that the suns and skies and clouds and flowers of June together can’t rival for one hour October’s bright blue weather. Even though it’s only September at the time of this writing, there’s still “just something” about that blue sky, the warm days, cool nights, and hints of colors on the trees. And yes—by the time you read this, there will most likely be more than a hint of snow somewhere! Way back in August, we spent a weekend with the River City Winnies in Wapakoneta, Ohio. Even though the nights were a little warmer back then, it was still a pleasure to sit with them around the campfire in the evenings and share stories while listening to the cicadas. A couple dealer visits later, we arrived at Old Mill Park in Thorntown, Indiana, for the Indiana State Rally. The weather there was perfect until the day it was over, and then it rained buckets– we learned the literal meaning of “togetherness” when we had to gather under someone’s awning to have our donuts and coffee! It did quit raining in time for us to get hooked up and on the road. Butch & Becky Moore, Eastern Area Reps Winnebago Outdoor Adventures. This is our third year at this venue and we always enjoy talking to people about the WIT Club and Winnebago Outdoor Adventures. In addition, it’s interesting to note that over the years, we’ve gotten to know some of the vendors and also some of the outside salesmen; exposure and word of mouth are a couple of the best advertising tools—you never know where a contact, a friendship, or spoken word will lead. So—and those of you who read this page regularly know that when I start the paragraph with that word, that there’s something coming—here it is! Having mentioned advertising tools above, there was an interesting article in the July/ August 2014 issue of the RV Business magazine on RV clubs. The article stated that manufacturer owner clubs exist “to build brand loyalty among current owners who, in turn, market the line to Eastern Area Reps Butch & Becky Moore other RVers via positive word of mouth.” I think we’d all agree with that. But the statement that got me to thinking was this one: that owners’ clubs, such as WIT, “might be viewed as the glue that keeps many consumers interested and active in the RV lifestyle.” We’ve all said, at one time or another, that our WIT Club friends, whether on the national, state, or local level, become like family to us— glue, if you will. It keeps us together. And even though through the upcoming winter months we all might become a little un-glued, in respect to being apart, we will be busy planning lots of good things for the upcoming year. Just as being a part of any family means being involved, we hope you will do your part as a member of your club or chapter. Hey—let’s plan to get really “sticky” next year!! And if you see us on the road—don’t forget to wave! Butch: 269-615-7049 Becky: 269-615-7050 [email protected] The foothills of South Carolina were our next destination for a state friendship campout with the Palmetto Winnebago Club. We thought the scenery and friendship could not be beat—then there was the food! From the campground you could look up to the mountains all around—and from the top of the mountain, you could look down to the campground—it’s one of the club’s favorite spots to camp and you could certainly see why. Out of the five non-member Winnebago owners at the campout, three joined the club that weekend! From there we headed north to the New York State Rally held in Frankfort, New York, with 53 other coaches. The mayor welcomed us all and the local Rotary Club there provided a couple breakfasts. We were again treated to good weather and it was great to join their members for outside games and other rally activities. Now we are at the Hershey RV Show in Hershey, Pennsylvania, working with another couple inside the Giant Center at a booth for both the WIT Club and October / November 2014 Butch and Becky Moore facebook.com/witclub 7 Club, Chapter & Rally News ARKANSAS Ark-A-Bago State Club By Bonnie Kadrzynski August–The Ark-A-Bagos enjoyed their August summer visit to Branson, MO. Nine coaches were represented at this rally: Bolte, Booth, Brewster, Fiedler, Ford, Harris, Matthews, Stout, and Tillman. A few of our adventures included lots of shopping to the Bass Pro Shop, kitchen store, tool store, and many others. Just gotta love Branson! The awesome production of “Jonah,” at the Sight and Sound Theater, was also enjoyed. Lunch at the College of the Ozarks is a must do! We also hit the Crab Shack on the Branson Landing, Stonehill Winery, and the Grand Country Buffet. And we can’t forget our club potluck! We’re talking about a lot of good food! into our decorated picnic baskets for an old-fashioned picnic at the schoolhouse in Roaring Camp Park. After admiring everyone’s baskets, members voted the Kenyons’ basket the 1st place prize winner. Following lunch, we all boarded the steam train for an open air ride through the lovely redwood trees. That evening we enjoyed a Mexican dinner at Don Quixote Restaurant in Felton. On Saturday, the RV park put on an allyou-can-eat pancake breakfast in the clubhouse. Following our chapter meeting and lunch on our own, members visited and cheered for the teams playing ladder golf. That evening we gathered for a “bring your own meat to barbecue” potluck dinner, followed by a card bingo game. Linda Worley won the big pot that ended the game. After our getaway breakfast Sunday morning, most members headed for the highway, having enjoyed another fun outing with our RV friends. Our club president, Elvan, called our third quarterly meeting to order. Old and new business were promptly discussed and voted on. Best news is the 2015 rally camping schedule is completed and finalized. Good job, Elvan! Some games for quiet time were played and ‘On The Bus’ for the not-so-quiet time! It’s always a wonderful fun time with our Winnebago family! CALIFORNIA Chardonnay Travelers Local Chapter By Susan Winn August–On August 21-24, eleven Chardonnay Travelers RVs gathered in Felton for a “Good Old Summertime” outing at Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort. This resort is located adjacent to Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park and near Roaring Camp Redwood Forest Steam Train and is only a few miles from downtown Santa Cruz and the Beach/Boardwalk Amusement Park. Our group enjoyed full hookups, a lovely clubhouse with a large kitchen and decks overlooking the creek. Our hosts, Matrangas and Andersons, provided barbecued hamburgers, salads, and ice cream bars for dinner on Thursday night. The next day we packed lunches 8 witclub.com WIT Club News Golden Bear Winnies Local Chapter By Lana Mason August–Our August outing took the Golden Bear Winnies to Jackson Rancheria RV Park in beautiful Amador County. Early birds arrived on Thursday and played a friendly round of golf on Friday morning at Mace Meadows in Pioneer. Our wagonmasters, the Manns and the Robersons, organized a Friday night dinner of heavy snacks. Our members contributed delicious dishes to this dinner. After dinner we listened to our music duo practice together, Ira Watson playing guitar and singing and Mike Mason on the harmonica. It is a real treat listening to them! The rest of the evening some of us learned a new card game taught by one of our members. On Saturday morning our wagonmasters prepared a delicious breakfast. After breakfast we had our chapter meeting. One of our members, Shirley Hutchison, was an Honorary Member of the Golden Bear Winnies. We also voted three Winnebago couples into our chapter as new members. After the meeting, we were free for the afternoon. Some went over to the casino to try their luck. I hear that some of us did have some good luck! There were card games going on in the clubhouse and there was also a refreshing pool to cool off. Others just relaxed and visited with each other. Also on Saturday, we were treated to music by Ira and Mike during our happy hour. We can never get enough of their music! Our dinner was a summer barbecue and dessert prepared by our wagonmasters. We sure enjoy eating! After dinner there was a lot to choose from. The Rancheria also prepared a hot dog barbecue and showed the movie “Splash.” They provided popcorn; drinks; and, of course, candy. We played cards in the clubhouse and others went over to the casino. After a continental breakfast on Sunday morning, we all departed, having had a wonderful weekend with a lot of laughs, great food, and great company. We are all looking forward to our next outing. CONNECTICUT Nutmeg Winnies State Club By Marcia Sindland August–On August 15, thirteen motorhomes and twenty-four people gathered at Water’s Edge Campground in Lebanon, CT for the weekend, which was October / November 2014 hosted by Allie Holdridge. The weather was beautiful and we were pleased to welcome two motorhomes from FL with Corrine and Peter Wightman and Jim and Sally Burnham, both of the Caloosa Winnies. entrance which makes it a challenging and dangerous dive. None of the Du-Bol Winnies remembered to bring their scuba gear so no one attempted the cave dive. Maybe next time. Friday evening brought a social hour with good food and great conversation. Saturday morning started with breakfast. Everyone had the day to explore local culture, enjoy the weekend events at the campground, or just plain relax and visit. Sunday morning came quickly and we all said our goodbyes. Saturday evening saw grills available for folks to cook the meat of their choice and each brought a dish to share. The food was great followed by two games. Beverly and Ray Lemieux surprised Marcia Sindland with a birthday cake followed by a great rendition of ‘Happy Birthday.’ Everyone enjoyed the surprise dessert. Both nights saw our traditional campfire with people sitting around and visiting into the night. Sunday began with breakfast. Some folks stayed on for awhile as we did not have to vacate the sites until mid-afternoon. It was a great weekend and we thank Allie for hosting it. Joanne Fenn came for a visit on Saturday and it was great to see her again. We were also pleased to welcome our old friends and members, John and Louise Frank, once again and catch up on the latest with them. FLORIDA Du-Bol Winnies Local Chapter By Rick Alix June–Our June 19-21 campout was held at the Suwannee River Rendezvous Resort and Campground in Mayo, FL. With so many of our fellow members traveling, our attendance was lower than usual with only twelve coaches, but as always, those of us in attendance had a fun time. FL lived up to its name as the “Sunshine State.” There was lots of pool time and shade seeking. Folks found restaurants, antique shopping, and visiting the area enjoyable and a relief from the heat. The Resort is on the banks of the Suwannee River and is a combination of a modern, well laid out and appointed campground and a lovely rustic cluster of buildings including cottages, restaurant, and gathering room. The Suwannee River Rendezvous Resort and Campground is home to Convict Spring. Convict Spring is a natural freshwater spring that feeds the Suwannee River. The spring is a “cool” place to swim. There is a mapped underwater cave system with an entrance from the spring. The cave has a restricted ILLINOIS Prairie Scooners Local Chapter By Gerri Baader July–Members attended GNR in July. The local campout for those unable to make the rally was at Camp Chippewa at Kankakee State Park. The weather was ideal. Hiking, biking, campfires, washer toss, dominoes, shopping, dining at Brickstone in Bourbonnais, and a potluck combined for a relaxing four-day weekend. June–During the IL Indians State Rally in June, Scooners were in charge of parking. President Roxann Parise organized the Woman’s Outing to The Gathering in Gilman where members lunched and shopped. Scooner Gerri Baader was in charge of the craft contest and book sale. Proceeds from that sale were donated to the GNR Youth Program. May–At May’s campout at Leisure Lake in Shorewood, guests Duane and Sandy Schultz of Lansing, decided to become members of the Scooners. They came with years of camping experience and joined in hiking, bicycling, and games. This location is a club favorite for children and grandchildren because Leisure Lake has a fishing lake, a swimming lake, pool, tennis courts, and miniature golf. At the end of the month, chapter members participated in a Campout for Charity for the American Cancer Society, Dogs for the Deaf, and senior citizens. The event featured seminars, craft displays, photo contests, crafts, and entertainment. The American Cancer Society’s seminar was especially informative. Immediate past President Neta Luther left for the WIT Tour to SD and Mt. Rushmore. She termed it fantastically well organized with plenty of time to visit the most interesting sites. Food was delicious. This was her second WIT Tour and she plans another to NY later this year. April–In April members participated in the IL Indians Spring Outing at the Iroquois County Fairgrounds in Crescent City. February–Prairie Scooners began their year with a Mardi Gras party at the home of Bob and Gerri Baader in Crete. Festivities included Mardi Gras games and cuisine. facebook.com/witclub 9 Club, Chapter & Rally News Fourwinds Winnies Local Chapter By Carol Johnson August–Wasn’t that a great week with eight out of eleven coaches. In attendance were: Reinerts; Wielands; Martins; Johnsons; Kirbys; Slaters; Todds; and Ritters with granddaughters, Nikki and Karley. The big news of the weekend was that Rich and Sherry Wieland drove in with a new Meridian motorhome and what a beauty it is! So it was tour time over the weekend and they were proud and happy to show us in and around it. Congratulations, you two! Friday night hot dog roast with all the wonderful side dishes was certainly one of the highlights of the day. There’s just something about hot dogs on the open fire; in fact, I think it’s the only way to fix them. INDIANA Who’s Yur Winnies Local Chapter By Kathy Rieck June 19-22, we met at Franklin County Park Fairgrounds in Brookville, IN, which is near Cincinnati, OH. The outing was hosted by the Meanderers. Many people came on Wednesday. There are lots of things to do in the area. We were here a few years ago and as people talked Saturday evening, they had still not seen all to see. Some drove to the IKEA store and Jungle Jims and other stores in Cincinnati. On Saturday some went to hear and see the wolves. Lori went in to pet them and will go back, but her sunglasses will never be the same. Glen and Janet Gish’s daughter, Rita, went in, as well as the Hughes. Many of the crew went golfing. Our wonderful hosts were the Martins and they guided us to the Hometown Buffet for our Saturday morning breakfast. Yummy! Following breakfast, seven of the ladies loaded up the cars and went to Gordyville for a huge flea market. Bob Ritter’s beautiful granddaughters enjoyed seeing all the puppies for sale. If I could’ve afforded it, Bob Ritter would have had a third DOG. But I just couldn’t find a way to tell him, so we refrained and came home with no puppies! But it was a fun morning to spend with some of the girls. I understand that several of the guys also had a good time exploring the new Gander Mountain Store in Champaign. Upon leaving Gordyville, we toured Gifford, the town just a mile away that was hit by a tornado last November. They are well on their way to rebuilding much of the terrible damage done that day. This hit hard for me especially since that is where my grandparents lived and I spent much of my childhood there. I took my ladies on a little tour of the countryside on the way back to the campground. The evening came and many of us went back into town to have dinner at Ryan’s. Good food and then back to the campground for the meeting. The campground owners along with EJ brought firewood for us to all enjoy. Did you know we had a campfire that evening? The entertainment seemed to be with at least seven campers trying out ringtones on their smart phones. Remember the days when we camped to get away from even the phone? That’s apparently no longer possible! We really only planned the meals because there were so many things to see. Thursday evening we had a romantic, inthe-dark pizza party. Pizza was delivered and we ate in the shelter. The pizza was great from Pizza King and delivered hot and dry. Sunday morning we all gathered for a short meeting, followed by a morning devotional service with cell phones silenced. A great weekend with wonderful friends and that’s what keeps us all coming back each month enjoying our Winnebagos. On Thursday evening everyone enjoyed the Early Bird Potluck. Honorary Members Erv and Bonnie Loomis attended and Bonnie gave rides around Wilder Park on the six-person golf cart. It was another nice evening for a campfire. 10 witclub.com Friday we went in to Metamora for dinner at the Hearthstone Restaurant. Some had the country buffet and some the seafood buffet. I think the seafood people were at one table and they brought them each a bucket to put the empty crab legs in. As I left, all the buckets were overflowing. Saturday was the nicest day and we ate in the pavilion again. We had chicken and fixings from the local IGA. Sunday morning we parted ways with donuts and coffee. IOWA Busy Bee Winnies Local Chapter By Mike Ebb August–The Busy Bee Winnies August campout was held at Wilder Park, Allison, IA July 31- August 3. Eight motorhomes went early and camped at Wilder Park on Wednesday, July 30, which was a free night if you paid for the next three nights. Many enjoyed a free hour concert by the Cedar Valley Chorus and Sweet Adelines. Following the concert, it was a perfect evening to sit around the campfire. On Friday morning we caravanned to Waverly for a tour of Terex Cranes arranged by Elmer Arends, a former employee. Fred, our guide, was very knowledgeable and gave us a very interesting tour. Elmer enjoyed meeting several of his former coworkers. We all had lunch at the Dirty Dog American Bar & Grill in Waverly. The afternoon was spent relaxing and visiting at Wilder Park. The Busy Bees made their own dinner in their motorhomes and then brought their own plate of food and drink and sat by the campfire. For dessert, the committee made s’mores for everyone. Saturday breakfast was on our own. We gathered for a presentation on the “Underground Railroad and Barn Quilts” by Danny Steiber from Waverly. Danny explained how the barn quilts originated to give secret messages to those traveling on the Underground Railroad. He brought a model of a barn that had the barn quilts labeled using railroad terminology in the code. The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses used by 19th century slaves in the United States to escape to free states and Canada. Danny had a slide show of pictures he took of many barn quilts found on buildings in several counties. Each barn quilt meant something to each family as they chose their own design and colors for their barn quilts. The slides were interesting but hard to see because of the bright light coming through the top of the shelter. At noon we had lunch on our own followed by the Busy Bee business meeting. Later everyone carpooled and caravanned to Clarksville for dinner at Doc’s Tap. Then it was back to the campground where we enjoyed another evening around the campfire. On Sunday the committee provided breakfast. Deanna Darrah led the church service with Sally Boie playing her keyboard for hymns and Happy Trails. A big THANK YOU to the committee: Elmer and Liz Arends, Jim and Deanna Darrah, Kathy Hunemuller, Roger and Beth Swyter, and Roger and Annette Bender for a wonderful weekend. We Wan To Go Local Chapter By Donna Adams August–The warm, humid, rainy weather didn’t stop a large group of twenty-three Winnebago motorhomes from converging at Springbrook for a fun weekend of camaraderie; tours; and, of course, some great food. Unfortunately, the Barnhills, Cornings, and Walkers were the only members who were unable to attend any portion of the campout. We also welcomed WIT Club News Aviation Hall of Fame near Greenfield and the historical hotel and Opera House in Greenfield. potential new member, Elaine Ballhagen, from Marshalltown, on her first campout with our group. Following a light breakfast on Sunday of locally homemade cinnamon rolls, the group departed saying their goodbyes until they meet again. The campout was kicked off with an early bird potluck on Thursday with an awesome array of food choices. Friday was a day of rest and relaxation followed by an evening meal at the “Links” restaurant on the Lake Panorama golf course. This has been an annual meeting place for KS folks for ten plus years and we enjoyed the park, its big shade trees, and the hospitality of the Beloit community. Of course, our festivities began with food, a salad supper on Thursday evening. The next morning we headed for the Mitchell County Courthouse for a tour. The courthouse was built in 1900-1901 and is an example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. The building is built of Warrensburg sandstone and rests on a Cottonwood Falls limestone foundation. Our tour guide knew every nook and cranny of the building and even took several of us to the clock tour. Later in the afternoon, we returned to downtown and visited St. John the Baptist Catholic Church for a tour, lead by the current priest. That church is built of the native stone from the Beloit area and features beautiful stained glass windows, many paintings, and several sculptures. Impressive and inspirational. Yes, we enjoyed several other meals together and lots of conversation, catching up on each other’s activities during the summer. The heat kept most of us in our motorhomes in the middle of the day, but the evenings were spent together at one of the picnic shelters. We honored our club’s anniversary as well as several couples who have celebrated fifty plus years of married life. MICHIGAN Cereal City Campers Local Chapter By Beverly Simonds August–Cereal City Campers all met at Sterling State Park in Monroe, MI for a weekend of fellowship and fun! The four of us met there on Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday morning, we set out on a new adventure! We carpooled to Nemo’s, restaurant on Michigan Ave. south of the ballpark. We had lunch there and then took their shuttle bus to Comerica Park to watch the Tigers play ball. JD Martinez hit a home run and the Tigers won 5-2! We all headed back to the shuttle bus that took us back to Nemo’s where our cars were parked and we returned to the campground. That was a really nice way to see the ball game without having to fight with the traffic or finding a parking place. When we returned to the campground, we were joined by a couple of the Motor Cities group, so we had a group of six motorhomes. Of course, we had to catch up on what everyone has been doing. We visited for awhile then we all went in to grab some dinner. The state park in Monroe is very nice. We all enjoyed the campfire and conversation after dinner. Saturday was a relaxing day. Some visited, some rode the trails, and some walked the trails. A fire brought us all back together in the afternoon to enjoy some roasted hot dogs and a large spread of food for dinner. The conversation continued until dark and we all retired. Sunday brought the departure and all the farewells until we meet again. We all agreed that it was such a fun weekend that we would like to make it a yearly event! Those who attended were: Battles, Clays, Gibbonses, Krecs, Loves, Paszkos, Pete Romanchuk, Ruths, Stolzes, Van Harts, and Jay and MJ Wright. A small group went out golfing, while the rest of us got set up and relaxed. We had happy hour in our campground that was surrounded by cornfields. She came back with some dog toys – one included the sewer donut. Friday morning we caravanned for some tours. Lunch at La Piazza was great. The Bicycle Museum of America was next on the schedule. We were given a chance to drive a bicycle car ourselves. We had dinner at KOA’s host’s Wapakoneta Eagles and later almost attended a male stripper show. This was the Friday night highlight in Wapakoneta. (It was a show we had to miss because the husbands wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much.) “What happens in Wapakoneta, stays in Wapakoneta.” Remember, this was all arranged by a Boy Scout! We pulled ourselves away and returned to the campground. We enjoyed a nice fire and perfect weather that night and enjoyed the conversation. 12 witclub.com Saturday was on our own. Some visited the Neil Armstrong Space Air Museum just across the freeway. Rosa and George Krec checked out the space suits. (Now that looks more like a Boy Scout interest.) Others went to town shopping for antiques. We had our business meeting at the VFW Hall before our dinner. A very nice dinner followed with very good prices. The VFW folks are warm and friendly folks. Erv also directed a group to his recycling center where they watched the sorting of comingled recyclables. It’s quite an operation. Saturday’s beanbag tournament battle began in the afternoon. August–Perfect weather and a perfect campground drew twenty member units to the Alexandria Campground and Shooting Sundowners Park Aug. 8-10. Many arrived as early as Local Chapter By Marcia Fabricius Wednesday for a few relaxing days. Hosts MINNESOTA August–The Sundowners’ annual August outing in Melrose was held the 22-24 in the Melrose City Park, hosted by Erv and Bertha Bueckers and Jim and Julie Rademacher. This was the 28th year that the Bueckers, generously hosted and sponsored this annual event for the Sundowners. The city residents are used to seeing us and the area businesses welcome our patronage. The Melrose Chamber of Commerce provided each coach with a goodie bag containing tourist information, coupons, and useful items. Snacks magically appeared every time there was a happy hour and still full meals were eagerly consumed. Area restaurants benefitted from Sundowners visitors at times when meals weren’t provided. Potluck Ted and Bernie Steele, Terry and Jeanne Johnson, Deb Nelson, and Dave and Barb Seaberg planned a fine outing. It began with potluck hors d’oeuvres on Thursday during happy hour. That served as dinner for most people, but there was still a group that had to send out for fried chicken to finish off their meal. Grilled English muffins for one breakfast and sweet rolls for another were great. On Saturday the hosts served brunch with assorted egg bakes, fruit, and sweet breads. Friday’s dinner was walking tacos and Saturday’s potluck dinner was good, too. No one ever goes away hungry after a Winnehahas weekend. A Friday trip to the Burr Winery in Alexandria was delightful. It included a WIT Club News short tour of the small quaint setting and ended with the winetasting. July–The great state of Minnesota had 107 units in attendance at the 2014 Grand National Rally. That was more than any other state. We were treated to wine and cheese by the folks from Lichtsinn in Forest City, and we enjoyed wine and cheese again two days later, compliments of Pleasureland RV in St. Cloud, MN. The weather was perfect. No complaints. Those who remember the blistering heat of past GNRs count this year as number one for weather. Anybody who missed it, missed a good time. Many gathered at the head of the row everyday for a social hour before each evening’s activities. Thursday was busy, busy at the head of the row where many volunteers prepared the now-famous Minnesota Wild Rice Soup to share during the row parties. Again, every last morsel was consumed. This year the GNR sound crew adopted Minnesotans who set up their own canopy next to ours and served beer and hot dogs. They ran out of everything even before the soup was gone. We had a short business meeting on Saturday morning followed by a free day to antique shop, explore the Litton Center, or run errands. Saturday evening we all carpooled to a new Smithville restaurant, KoZak’s Laketown Grill. We were all in a line at the park. The weather was great and we enjoyed evenings around a circle. Friday, mushroom-loving attendees enjoyed a tour of The NH Mushroom Company. Others visited local area attractions, including: Beede Falls, Remick Farm, the local farmer’s market, and craft stores. NEW YORK Albany Windmill Winnies Local Chapter By Carolyn Crouch August–Our Arrowhead campout was attended by thirteen rigs: Palladino, Peggy Farrell and Bob Boyle, Bonesteel, Bruce, Kramer, Crouch, Everett, Shaw, Hebert, Moore, Krug, Capovanni, and Smith. The LeJeunes, our AK travelers, came on Saturday evening to enjoy supper with us and to tell us about their travels. Our super wagonmasters were Evelyn and Dick Kramer and Martha and Jim Bruce. By Friday afternoon, everyone had arrived and we had the tables and the canopies all set up and we started getting ready for our chili supper with all the other delicious sides. And these are the items I can remember as there were so many. And, of course, the meal would not be complete if we didn’t have dessert. All so, so yummy! Oh, by the way, Evelyn, the chili was delicious! After supper we chatted with each other to catch up on things at the table or we went over by the fire and chatted. And, of course, Jim made our campfire very colorful. Then when it was dark, we stayed by the fire for awhile and then slowly went to our rigs to rest up for the following day, which was going to be another busy one. Saturday morning we were all greeted to a great breakfast. Mr. Food had nothing over these great Windmill Winnie chefs! After all that good food, we had our meeting and elected new officers. We would like to thank our outgoing officers for their fine service to the chapter. Then we had some free time to go for a walk or talk or rest. Then we had our game of beanbag baseball and we had mixed teams, so no men or women coming out ahead. And to break up the afternoon, we had cake and ice cream which made us feel like kids again. It hit the spot and it didn’t spoil our appetite for supper. Supper had a few new items on the menu and leftovers from Friday. The supper dishes were cleaned up and we were back to chatting and enjoying those colorful campfires. Sunday, we had our continental breakfast and broke down the canopies and placed the tables back at the proper campsites. And let’s not forget to welcome our newest members, Ed and Deanna Capovanni. Welcome to our chapter and hope to see you at more of our outings. We had a wonderful weekend and we all slowly left. And we would like to thank our wagonmasters for a terrific job! NORTH DAKOTA Nodak Flickertails State Club By Helen Evans July–The 2014 Grand National Rally is now history. Chris and Joyce Hesse and their granddaughter, Amanda Hesse; Denis and Betty Lebrun; Marjorie Lebrun Morrison; our new members, William and Joan Norwood; and John and Helen Evans attended GNR this year. A few of the club members worked as volunteers for traffic control and as conductor on the people mover. The club received the 2014 WIT State Club of Excellence award again this year. Denis Lebrun and Margie Lebrun Morrison, according to WIT records, have been going to the rally for 25+ years. Both have ribbons that say 20 years for Wings, 30 years for Eagles. That is a goal for the rest of us. As we attended the rally we could see many changes. The opening ceremonies from past years was quite noticeable because it was a two-part ceremony. One part took place in the morning with the flag raising, WIT singers, and the welcome. The National Parade of States took place in the evening. Then the entertainment was afterwards. Another change made was the prize giveaway for volunteer of the day. The Rivoli Revue, a husband and wife team, went very well. In addition to making us laugh, they were patriotic, a fantastic evening entertainment, and the weather cooperated with us. In order to grow, things have to change. The President’s dinner and seminar is an informational session whereas Randy Potts, Chairman of the Board, CEO and President addressed questions about RVs in the future, answered questions about the company from the audience. Also, other team members spoke including Denise Yeager, our new Consumer Engagement Manager. 14 The display of the ND Oil information was displayed extremely well. We received positive comments about the display and they liked that we were promoting our state. Thanks to Ed and Donna Grunett for getting us the charts, booklets, and crude witclub.com WIT Club News oil and water samples. Thanks to Chris and Joyce for putting the display board together and for transporting it to the rally. About the giveaways at GNR, Dakota Growers Pasta Co. in Carrington, ND donated three boxes each of macaroni and cheese, fettuccine, and spaghetti for a total of nine boxes of pasta. Red River Commodities donated a large box, approximately 400 squeezable packets of SunButter®, which is an alternative to peanut butter, and a box of nut-free trail mix also in small packets. These goodies went very quickly. In turn for their graciousness, I promised to send them pictures of the event. Rich and Charlene started the “the greatest corn hole tournament” on Friday evening. What they forgot to mention is that their young grandchildren, Lillie, Annalyzia, and Eyan, are corn hole professionals. These kids were good. Everyone knew Rich and Charlene must have taught them everything about corn hole. After the kids had their fun, it was time for the senior tournament. Everyone participated, including newest members, Denny and Marlene Evans. This is just a warning, that they are excellent corn hole players and in addition, are also excellent dancers. Someone saw Denny and Marlene dancing the cha-cha in the middle of the street later in the evening. Don requested they teach line dancing at the next campout. You know how he loves line dancing. Saturday afternoon Yvonne, Jean, Nancy, LaVerne, Sally, Dave, and Maryann played dominoes at Bob and Maryann’s coach. Our own Dottie Johnson started our chapter. She is a very active member and has been at every one of the birthdays ever since. How about that! Dottie is also a Charter Member of WIT and enjoys going to GNR. Following our shared dinner, birthday cake and ice cream, we had fun and games, along with our annual white elephant gift exchange. We were in no hurry to leave following Sunday breakfast. We wished everyone a safe journey home and a smile. July–The GNR ‘Out of this World’ was held in July. OKLAHOMA Green County Winnies Local Chapter By Darrell Carver July–GNR was a great time for fellowship and fun. Once we arrived at Forest City, we set up the canopy and established a “home base” for all the OK attendees. We enjoyed a canopy full of visitors every evening. Some of us even stayed through the evening fighting the mosquitoes and enjoying good social time. If you see Mike Grimes or CW, be sure and ask them about their “Happy Bowl” experience! The row party decorations looked great. We had pretty much the same decorations as we had at the state rally. However, MI was next to us and they went all out and won first prize. We handed out about 500 mini Moon Pies in the first hour. Did I mention the good weather we had all week! Although this year was on a different schedule to accommodate the RAGBRAI (Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa), it was overall a good time. Oklahoma had twenty rigs at GNR, although they were spread out among the International Presidents, No-Tows, WIT-LEO, Handicap row, and the OK row. We only had seven coaches in the OK row, but we always had a good crowd visiting under the canopy in the evenings from all the other rows. Overall, we had thirteen member coaches from Okiebagos, GCW, or SS. The Wednesday and Friday night entertainment were acts that had been in the white tent in previous years. Friday night Okiebagos sponsored a catered dinner for all the OK attendees. We had thirtyfive show up. Everyone but Mike and Susie Grimes. The WIT-LEO also had their dinner that evening and they attended it. We did see a lot of them through the week, however, as they dropped by quite a few times and visited with us. I tried to get Mike to wear Bermuda shorts, but he said, “Never going to happen!” 16 witclub.com OREGON Winnie ‘Gonians Local Chapter By Paul Christensen July–The July campout of the Winnie ‘Gonians was at the Patio RV Park in Blue River, OR. The park is on the McKenzie River and had full hookups with 30/50 amps and cable TV. We arrived on Thursday and went to dinner at the Takoda’s restaurant where we had a private room. It was warm and there was no air conditioning until we were ready to leave, then a young man came in and turned it on. On Friday we all loaded up and proceeded to the Rustic Skillet for lunch. It is a small restaurant but they made a big table for us and the service was great. There were nineteen of us and we all got fed. After lunch we got our chairs out and visited all afternoon. I heard a lot of stories and I am sure some of them were even true. While we were sitting there, Russ and Helen arrived and took the space that had been vacated by Jim and Joyce. As Helen got out and came over she said, “I get the boner–I left all my clothes home!” Eventually Russ got the blame for it and he got the boner. Later we had our happy hour, with lots of snacks and goodies, and then we went down by the river and built a fire and everyone cooked marshmallows and visited until bedtime. Saturday morning we decided rather than cooking we would go back to the Rustic Skillet for breakfast. Once again there were nineteen of us and the same ladies were serving. The only problem was Hal and Joyce were looking at their menu and the waitress forgot to take their order. They did get fed though. During the day our new members, Walter and Carolyn Hixon, took a tour of the area and reported that they had seen a lot of beautiful country with lakes and rivers and trees and stuff. Sounds like OR. In the afternoon we once again sat in the shade, the ladies in one group and the men in another. It was a beautiful day and we sat there until time for our potluck. After dinner and more visiting, it was getting dark and people retired to their motorhomes. Sunday morning Lloyd got up and plugged in the coffeepot and we all brought fruit and rolls and had a great continental breakfast. We were a little late getting out but some of us had to leave. Marv and Karen were going to stay another night and then leave on their trip to Jackson Hole, WY. Wish we were going with them. PENNSYLVANIA Three River Winnies Local Chapter By Helen Pomilio August–Our August meeting was held at Hare Creek Campground, Corry, PA. Members attending were: Don Hazen, Stranfords, Maines and Donnelly, Muellers, Pomilios, Hindsmans, Luxons, McKnights, McManus, and Tirpaks. It was a perfect weekend. The hosts were Ron and Marie Mueller and Tom Maines and Judy Donnelly. A pitch-in dinner was held on Friday night after which we had a great campfire. The hosts provided a continental breakfast on Saturday morning and in the afternoon we were invited to Tom Donnelly’s grandson’s alpaca farm, where Tom’s family was having a pig roast for a reunion picnic. We got to see the animals on the farm: alpacas, cattle, and pigs. There was great food, entertainment, and lots of activities for the children in their family. It was a perfect day to spend with Tom’s family. Sunday we spent the day at the Chautauqua Institute located in Chautauqua, NY, a 40-minute drive from Corry, PA. Chautauqua Institute is a summer community on Chautauqua Lake that encompasses arts, education, religion, and recreation. Many famous people and leaders of our time have taught and lectured. Some of us attended a church service that held over 3,500 people and uses an outdoor organ that is third largest in the world with 5,640 pipes! The minister who gave the homily was Dr. Allen Boesak, he was the first incumbent of a Desmond Tutu Chair for Peace, Global Justice and Reconciliation Studies. WIT Club News SOUTH DAKOTA Rushmore Winnies Local Chapter By Connie Howard July–A good time was had at GNR. We had great weather. We participated in Friendship night serving our famous buffalo beans to 700 people. TENNESSEE West Tennessee Travelers Local Chapter By Fran Surles July–Because most of the members worked at GNR, there was no meeting of WTT. Most of the members worked parking, traffic control, people movers, or other jobs. Some of the members started at GNR on July 3 and did not leave until July 21 or after. A BIG thanks to all of the Volunteer state members that worked at GNR and the ones setting up the state tent for row party. TN still lives up to our motto of the Volunteer state. Every evening, after parking and other jobs, the TN members visited and talked with each other and were the largest group around until GNR started. We had a lot of old friends from previous meetings stop by to chat. The row party theme was ‘Angels for Out of This World’ and the party food was Angel food cake, Heavenly hash, and Devil’s food cake. The liquid refreshment was Angel punch and Devil’s brew (Jack Daniels mix) and the chapter ran out of the brew before the end of the row party. Some came back for seconds of the liquid brew. A good time was had by all. Next year’s theme is Winnebago Down Under, an Australian theme, and the dates are July 21-25, Tuesday through Saturday. UTAH Golden Spike Travelers Local Chapter By Karen Waldron August–Our destination was the beautiful Bear Lake. June and Glen Hamblin were the hosts. There were ten members attending: Glen and June; Hal and Pat Boyd, and Jan; Tom and Janice; and Keith and Karen. Saturday we enjoyed out games. Sunday was a nice day so we stayed awhile and just visited. July–Ten members spent the beautiful July weekend at Crystal Hot Springs. Their flyer says, “It’s the Water.” The natural hot springs ranges in temperature from 121-134 degrees and has remained that way for 145 years. They use a 52-degree spring to cool it down to 75 to 105 degrees so that you may enjoy your choice of 1-4 mineral spas. October / November 2014 The hot and cold springs, which are 50 ft. apart, are the same springs that fill our Olympic pool during the summer season. Karen had a new game we tried called “Rocket Stomp.” It was a lot of fun. Each player had a flag with his name on it to leave where his or her rocket landed, there was a cute little girl playing on the swing set that kept running out to return our rockets to us. It made it hard to keep track of who was winning. Thanks to Gary Rudy, we tried his new football game and the Snag Golf game. Tom, Hal, and Boyd won the prizes for the games. After dinner, Pat and Hal won the drawing for the door prize. We missed Jerry and Jan Kersey. They were having fun at Grand National. We talked about all of us going next year. VIRGINIA Blue Ridge Winnies Local Chapter By Nancy Coiner July–We traveled to Lake View RV resort in Bluff City, TN, for our July venue. We did lots of fun things. We had a guided tour of Bristol Motor Speedway, got to ride on the track, enjoy a view of the track from the owner’s box, stand in Victory Lane, and shop in the wonderful NASCAR gift shop. We also had an afternoon pontoon boat cruise on Lake Boone. We were treated to Evelyn’s Chinese Chicken Salad with great side dishes. We departed Sunday morning after breakfast and devotions. June–June found us in Galax at Cool Breeze. The Doerschugs were hosts and fed us a wonderful country breakfast and opened their home for a fun evening of grilling and sharing side dishes. May–Some traveled to Asheboro to the NC State Rally. The weather was good along with lots of fellowship with other chapters. We also attended the May WIT State meeting at Endless Caverns in New Market. April–Our first camping weekend in Monroe, VA, and it was a glorious weekend. We had an Italian dinner Friday, fellowship breakfast Saturday morning, and a great wiener roast Saturday evening. We all found a wonderful “pie” shop and enjoyed various selections. Virginia Coasters Local Chapter By Gene Whitley August–The Virginia Coasters returned to Misty Mountain Campground for the August meeting and the Virginia State Meeting. The campground was great and the weather fantastic. You forget how big the night sky is until you visit a location such as this. The hint of campfire smoke drifting on the night air provided a familiar and welcomed memory of times in the past. Those that do not participate in the camping experience are missing a part of life that’s priceless. Thanks to the Dunaways, Blue Ridge Chapter, for hosting the hot dog dinner Thursday night. That was an unexpected and tasty treat that included all Winnebago owners in the campground being invited. We shared conversation with friends and new acquaintances at their site. Friday was filled with arrivals of the other Coasters, trips to the surrounding orchards and wineries, and just enjoying the comfort of being in the mountains. Friday night twelve Coasters enjoyed dinner at Three Notch’d Grill in the town of Crozet. The menu was filled with options and the food tasty. Our waitress did a good job serving our noisy group. Everyone appeared to have a good time. Saturday began with the planned breakfast, provided by the Blue Ridge Chapter, and meetings. Most of us were free in the afternoon, so trips to the countryside were undertaken. Joyce and I found and enjoyed a peach orchard with a store, of course, a ways up in the mountains. It was my first experience with a tasty peach donut. The peaches we purchased were large and tasty. I never expected to find peach orchards in the mountain country. Others visited a local winery and tasted a local “beer train.” From the way it was described, it’s a sampling of local brewery beers arranged in a train order and from all accounts, is highly recommended. Some lounged around their sites and enjoyed the quietness and beauty of the region. That’s one of the many things that I find enjoyable about the Coasters. The diversity of activities we participate in during “on your own time”– Coasters always win, no matter what we select to do at the campouts. Plenty to choose, with no pressure to pick any. We had two members camped up the hill in the campground due to the space availability limits. Rue and Cathy and Ted were really camping in the woods. Unique driving skills were needed to get to the sites and park. Congratulations to the ‘hill campers.’ Saturday night provided a low mist about 20 feet above ground, floating slowly, and that combined with the lights on the mountain from other campers was a sight to be experienced. Sunday goodbyes were said and we departed for home or other destinations. facebook.com/witclub 17 Anytime, Anywhere at Your Fingertips. She was stressed out, but she hit a home run much to her surprise and brought them all in. Great job, Peggy! and then card bingo for some very nice prizes. Of course, card games were played throughout the weekend. Thank you to our wagonmasters for showing everyone a great time. WISCONSIN Northern Lights Local Chapter By Beverly Spinti August–The Northern Lights Chapter of WIT met at the North Central WI Antique Steam and Gas Engine Show on Aug. 2224 near Edgar, WI. There were sawmills, threshing machines, model steam engines, gas tractors, shingle mills, stone crushers, old gas stations, and a rural schoolhouse. A variety of food was available. A Sunday church service featured the 2nd Edition. A variety of food and items were for sale. August–Our August outing at Ocean Park was a cohosted outing with the Penn Wits and the Columbia River Rollers. The weather was perfect for hanging out at the RV or taking walks to the beach (with a windbreaker). Some folks arrived early to enjoy the beautiful weather longer. What fun. Friday started off with happy hour, appetizers, and lots of visiting. We got to meet several of the Penn Wits RV chapter members and they seemed to fit right into our chapter wonderfully. JoAnne and several members from both chapters helped set up the clubhouse tables–great teamwork. Leon and JoAnne were solving the issues and focusing on world peace while Claudia played in the kitchen and the puppies begged for appetizers. Many folks went to the outside “Leon Cinetopia” to watch football and root for the San Diego Chargers. Right! Most were rooting for the Seahawks and they did win. Saturday the CRR chapter provided a potluck breakfast. It was very yummy. JoAnne led the CRR meeting. After the meeting was adjourned, we all were able to go play somewhere for a few hours. Many folks went to explore the farmers market and some to the downtown festivities. While others hung out at the RV Park, some went fishing, took walks to the ocean, or shopped at Jack’s famous market. Some (Cathy and Claudia) went shopping for opals. The Penn Wits and CRRs divided up into teams for the afternoon beanbag baseball. We played two games and it was a fun time by all. Peggy was feeling better so she joined us for beanbag baseball. She October / November 2014 Happy hour was an amazing spread. It was a wonderful sharing of appetizers. For dinner, the Penn Wits hosted a beach party barbecue. Thank you to the Penn Wits RV chapter for putting on a great spread. The CRR chapter provided dessert. A few folks hung around later that evening visiting and sharing stories. Sunday folks got together for breakfast leftovers and a hot cup of coffee then followed by more visiting, swapping of stories, a cleanup of the clubhouse, and then final goodbyes. Evergreen Winnies Local Chapter By Sandie Rosko July–Our July outing brought fun and laughter. At Bayshore RV Park in Tokeland, the Evergreen Winnie members had a great time. We welcomed brand new members we met at Roy Robinson RV Show and Tell, John and Mary Barnett. Some members arrived a day or two early for the outing to enjoy the nice weather, to walk the beach, and enjoy the water views from the park. Many others arrived Friday and that evening the wagonmasters, Ron and Arlene Pokrandt and Shirley and Sharon Richard, served homemade sloppy joe sandwiches and potato salad while the other members brought other food for all to enjoy. After a hearty lunch and business meeting, beanbag baseball was played. The teams fought a good battle as many members hit home runs. Everyone was hitting very well and after nine innings, the score was very close so everyone was a winner. The game sure brought some laughs. Saturday evening there was a delicious potluck ALBERTA Wild Rose WIT By Dani Mashford August took us to Kiever’s Lake. We all had such fun putting up the club’s tent just in time for some rain to fall. The “girls” mostly supervised, but we were called into action to hold the poles from time to time. Lots of laughs, lots of fun as we all worked together. July was our friendship outing at Granum, AB and also we celebrated our club’s 20th anniversary with a large cake. June took us to Diamond Grove RV Park up by Edmonton, AB for our outing. Some toured West Edmonton Mall and then everyone went out for a Chinese food buffet. May–Our year started the end of May at Dinosaur Trails Park at Drumheller, AB. On Saturday we all drove to what used to be an old coal mining town and now has nothing much more than an old hotel and pub, which is noted for its beer and hamburgers. You have to cross eleven bridges to get there and the place was full. A fascinating place full of stories and memorabilia from the wild days of the late 1800s and early 1900s. We have had a good season. Unfortunately, it is nearly over. AB has such a short summer season and it goes by much too quickly. In spite of a concentrated effort to get new members in our club, our numbers are dwindling. However, those remaining have a great time together every time we go out. facebook.com/witclub 19 Share your photos & stories with WIT Club’s Facebook page! Friday evening the Poulsbo General Manger, Scott Twomey, treated us to a delicious dinner at the Old Spaghetti Factory. That evening we played Bingo for outstanding prizes. Jeanne Miller took the gas fireplace home after winning the black out game. Saturday morning the guys were up bright and early cooking sausage and pancakes, complimented with a Cheese Soufflé. President Mike led a brief meeting that was attended by members on the lot plus some of our members who drove in: Sherry Atterbury, Jeff and Marion Sloboden, Julia Braun, Will and Theresa Hood, Rita Boddy, and John and Pat Tarrant. Joe and Helen were invited to speak to the sales crew about “we were on the lot to assist any prospects that might have questions about RVing and relay our excitement for this lifestyle.” During the weekend the sales people referred prospects to us to discuss our experience in having an RV and also our rigs were open to “lot walkers”. the BBQ hamburger and hot dog lunch was cooked by the Poulsbo staff. Other member who showed up was Mike and Sandi Rosko, Jerry and Jackie Penningroth. We were grateful for the Tech Service that made many minor adjustments. The Bean Bag Baseball was set up and some of the sales crew came out and played for a short time. At noon We are very grateful and appreciate for the hard work of Scott, Amy, Tim and the tech service for their hospitality and welcoming us to the Poulsbo lot. The evening meal found the master barbeque, John Frost, a Classic, at the grill and his steak and chicken were cooked to perfection, followed by a movie and dessert. The weekend ended with a Continental Breakfast on Sunday morning and all scattered with rigs moving to Pacific Beach, Oregon, home and Toppenish. Nor-Tex Travelers Local Chapter By Brenda Rigsby MINNESOTA CLUBS Winnehahas, Northwoods, Sundowners, Southern Honkers by Marcia Fabricius Minnesota kicked off the 2014 camping season with a Show & Tell at Pleasureland RV in St. Cloud. This was a function for all the Minnesota clubs and it was a great succsss. With 47 units on site, and other people who came by car, there were lots of hugs and handshakes as members greeted each other after a long, hard winter. parts store did a good business as well. Brenda Abel presented a seminar with tips on cleaning a maintaining the motorhome. A booth was set up, manned by WIT members, and stocked with WIT literature, and prospective members and/or buyers were encouraged to look into joining a great club with great members and great activities. Pleasureland RV management and staff were again terrific hosts, providing parking, electric, meals, games, prizes, night security, tips, information – you name it, they had it. There was a big inventory of Winnebago Industries products on their huge lot, and members and the public were encouraged to view the units inside and out. Many members had service work done, and the Pleasureland RV’s staff all introduced themselves before joining the members for Friday’s potluck dinner. And they were on hand all weekend to answer questions and generally be helpful and friendly. 22 witclub.com In spite of the rain and the wind and the cold, this was the perfect start of the new camping season. It can only get better in the next months. We had a bang up start to the Nor-Tex Travelers weekend. When arriving on Thursday we were greeted by heavy rains and thunderstorms. This Didn’t stop our members because we knew we’d have a good time. That evening we all travelled to an excellent fish restaurant for a delicious meal, and on Friday we all brought our meats of choice for grilling along with loads of sides from everyone. Saturday morning we caravanned to the The McClain’s Superstore in Rockwall, Texas for our annual local dealership Show and Tell. We were greeted by the General Manager Steve Dorgone and his sales staff. The showroom was arranged with only new Winnebago motorhome products. We set up our Show & Tell banner, the WIT flag, and Winnebago circulars so customers could see we were there to help Steve and his staff by telling them about our own Winnebago RV’s, our different travel experiences, and help answer any questions they might have. Steve’s wife, Lynn, had coffee and donuts in the morning and Steve had his specialty, TriTip beef, prepared for us along with potato salad, macaroni salad and grilled bread that was more than delicious. As Steve promised, after eating Tri-Tip we’d never want beef briskets again. Well he was right on that! After visiting with numerous potential customers, sharing our experiences on the road, and our RV’ing lifestyles we returned to the RV Park for a pizza party, snacks and some learned how to pinochle. Thank you Steve, and your staff, for making us welcome and making our day very enjoyable. WIT Club News Road Bites Minnesota Wild Rice Soup Many people requested the recipe for the soup from GNR. Without a healthy 12-volt system, many of the appliances in an RV will cease to operate. The water heater, the refrigerator, furnaces & water pumps, some awnings, & the interior lighting... all powered-by or controlled-by 12-volt power. Don’t forget the radio & the TV antenna booster...& possibly the TV too. At the center of all this - the batteries! NAPA 982575 AGM Battery The size / capacity of the battery package selected for a specific RV model or series is an important decision for the manufacturer’s electrical engineering group. The goal for the design engineer is to provide a user-friendly & capable electrical system for the average user... including considerations for a variety of options that model may have available. When replacing batteries, it’s very important to do your homework & educate yourself regarding the application the battery serves... and then consider your expectations. If your RV is normally parked at a campsite & plugged into shore power, it doesn’t make sense to have 300AH of battery capacity sitting idly on the battery tray. But if you enjoy Boondocking, this subject becomes significantly more important. In general, wet-cell / flooded 6-volt & 12volt batteries appear to be very similar & it’s reasonable to believe most batteries share similar construction characteristics. Truth be told, appearances can be very misleading. A batteries physical dimensions & weight is indicative of the size of the lead plates and one would conclude that more is better! The number of fill-caps (or fill plugs) will reflect the number of cells & this clue telegraphs the battery is a 6-volt versus a 12-volt battery. The battery posts may telegraph the intended purpose of the battery...i.e. a cranking / starting battery versus a deep-cycle trolling motor battery, but that’s about it. A battery without specific information posted on the case of the battery or manufacturer’s data-sheet would really make this a guessing game. Battery Basics: • Standard Non-Sealed w/Removable Caps - The least expensive flooded batteries require the owner monitors / adds water – i.e. a poor-man’s battery! These can be the best ‘bang for the buck’...but they demand timely attention / tending or they can fail quickly. • Sealed or Maintenance-Free batteries are sometimes referred to as the lazyman’s battery... Simply, you will pay significantly more for a maintenance-free battery, but the side-benefit is they don’t require the weekly attention – i.e. adding water! However, this doesn’t exclude keeping battery posts clean & dry. 26 witclub.com • AGM batteries....a.k.a. Absorbed Glass Mat batteries are at the upper-end of the price scale. AGM batteries are constructed with a heavy-duty polyethylene case and each cells plate package is wrapped with a layer of fiberglass matting. This matting helps to isolate the cells from vibration & serves to keep the plates wetted-out at all times... even if the battery is mounted up-side down. Battery Performance / Measurements Specifications • CCA Cold Cranking Amps: it is a measurement of the number of amps a battery can deliver at “0” degrees F for 30 seconds and not drop below 7.2 volts. This value is used to evaluate cranking or starting batteries. A high CCA rating is preferred in cold ambient temperatures • CA Cranking Amps: it is a measurement of the number of amps a battery can deliver at “32” degrees F. It can also be referred to as MCA – Marine Cranking Amps. • RC Reserve Capacity: it is rating which reflects the number of minutes a “fully charged” battery - at 80 degrees F, will continue to deliver “25” amps until dropping below 10.5 volts. • AH Ampere-Hour: a measurement of current of one ampere flowing for one hour. It is a term used to tell the amount of energy a battery can deliver before requiring recharging. Ampere-Hours are based on a 20-hour unit of time – i.e. an 80 AH battery will deliver 4 amps for 20 hours & a 130 AH battery will deliver 6.5 amps for 20 hours, etc. (80 divided by 20 = 4 & 130 divided by 20 = 6.5) Generally speaking, there are few mysteries or secrets that remain regarding ‘wetcell’ lead-acid battery technology. The purity & matching-up of the specific lead compounds are the guarded secrets that battery manufacturer’s use (or choose not to use) when engineering & producing a wet cell / flooded battery...or any battery for that matter. Simply, there can be significant differences & performance levels between similar sized batteries & a myriad of reasons that pricing of batteries can vary so much between brands. It’s rare that you hear somebody state “I’ve got too much battery power available”... & getting what you paid for is another statement that comes to mind! You will see sights and travel to areas you might not ever consider when traveling on your own. We have been there and know the important things to see and do. Traveling with a caravan or attending an adventure removes the stress of uncertainties when traveling in an unfamiliar area. Winnebago Outdoor Adventures has done the research and planning. We make campground reservations, provide meals at some of the best restaurants in town, and provide guided tours and sightseeing excursions. You will learn more about the area than you could learn on your own with the narration of local guides, some who actually have come out of retirement only to do step-on guide service for Winnebago Outdoor Adventures. You will meet and travel with other guests from all over the United States and Canada, experiencing more fun than you ever imagined, and develop friendships that will no doubt last a life-time. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN ADVENTURE AND A CARAVAN? An adventure takes place in one city location and usually lasts from 4-15 days. A caravan will travel from city to city. The full cost of the event is noted on the event’s page on the website. WIT members receive a 10% discount off that advertised price. WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE EVENT COST? Camping fees including hookups, admission to attractions noted in the itinerary, meals noted in the itinerary, busing except when traveling a short distance where guests will use their tow cars, event hosts, taxes and gratuities are all included. Payments may be made over the phone by credit card or mailed to the Winnebago Outdoor Adventures’ Office, PO Box 268, Forest City, IA 50436. HOW MANY MOTOR HOMES DO YOU TAKE ON A CARAVAN? 22 – 25 maximum. HOW MANY MOTOR HOMES DO YOU TAKE ON AN ADVENTURE? Most adventures are 22 maximum. There are a few like the San Antonio Fiesta, Branson Country Christmas, Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, Washington D.C. and the Norsk Hostfest where we will take more than 22. HOW MANY MILES DO YOU TRAVEL IN A CARAVAN? When traveling from campground to campground - 150 miles is the average. Travel can be as few as 40 miles or up to 350 miles in a day. Total miles traveled in a caravan can be anywhere from 380 miles to over 4,000 miles. WHO WILL HOST THIS EVENT? On an adventure you will have your event hosts. On a caravan you will have your event hosts and tailenders. To avoid canceling a caravan, Winnebago Outdoor Adventures may run a caravan with only one host couple if we do not receive the minimum number of RV reservations required to run the event. ARE THE EVENT HOSTS AND TAILENDERS COMPETENT AND EXPERIENCED? Yes! We choose top quality people who are professionals possessing outstanding leadership skills. All have had hands on training and experience and are eager to make your trip the most memorable of all. WHERE AND WHEN DO WE MEET TO BEGIN THE EVENT? You will be informed of the rendezvous campground in the Sneak Preview sent out by e-mail approximately 6 weeks prior to the first day of the event. Directions to the campground will be included in this information. WILL WE GET TO KNOW THE OTHER PEOPLE ON THE TOUR? Definitely. A “Who’s Who List” with the names and addresses of guests registered on the event will be sent out with the Sneak Preview information. Some guests will arrive at the rendezvous campground a day or two early just to meet others signed up for the event. Reservations and campground expense for early arrival are your responsibility. Socials will also be held during the event as a way to get to know other participants. WILL I NEED A PASSPORT WHEN TRAVELING OUTSIDE OF THE UNITED STATES? It is required for all travelers to have a valid passport for identification when traveling outside of the United States. For information on how to obtain a passport, see the State Department’s travel Web site or CIBT (Expedia’s passport partner), or call the U.S. National Passport Information Center: 1-877-4USA-PPT; TDD/TTY: 1-888-874-7793. Keep in mind you need to allow time for your passport to be processed which can take weeks. WHAT KIND OF INSURANCE DO I NEED ON MY RV? U.S. motorists planning to travel in Canada need to obtain a Canadian Non-Resident Inter-Provincial Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card which is accepted as evidence of financial responsibility anywhere in Canada. It is available only in the U.S. through your insurance company or their insurance agents. U.S. motorists planning to travel in Mexico are required to have liability insurance (minimum) issued through a Mexican company. Liability policies provide NO coverage for collision, overturning, fire, etc. Full coverage insurance is available. You will fill this sheet out and give to your hosts at orientation. IF YOU DO NOT OWN A WINNEBAGO INDUSTRIES PRODUCT CAN I SIGN UP FOR A WOA CARAVAN OR ADVENTURE? YES! DURING A CARAVAN WILL THERE BE TIME IN THE SCHEDULE AND PLACES FOR ME TO GET MY HAIR OR NAILS DONE EACH WEEK? We do our best to provide free days in areas providing facilities for your personal needs. DO I NEED TO BRING A TOW CAR? Tow cars are recommended as there may be areas you will want to tour on your own during a free day where you are unable to take your motor home. There may be times when tow cars are used for traveling a short distance from the campground to a restaurant or attraction. CB RADIOS: CB radios are required on caravans. A CB radio is required for communication among caravan participants during travel days to ensure a smooth and safe caravanning operation. You can use a hand-held CB radio as long as it has CB radio frequency and is not the FRS (Family Radio Service). MAY I BRING MY PET ALONG? Pets are welcome. Please understand that you are responsible for your pet including pet walkers and overnight accommodations when needed. WHAT HAPPENS IF I CANCEL THE TRIP? All cancellations must be received in writing to Winnebago Outdoor Adventures. Winnebago Outdoor Adventures will retain a $35.00 cancellation fee if your reservation is cancelled prior to final payment deadline 42 witclub.com (75 days prior to start of the event). If your reservation is cancelled 74 to 15 days prior to the start of an event for any reason, Winnebago Outdoor Adventures will retain a $35.00 cancellation fee, plus 10% of the full cost of the event, plus charges incurred from guarantees and/or deposits made for guest. With a cancellation 14 days or less prior to start of the event for any reason, Winnebago Outdoor Adventures will retain a $35.00 cancellation fee, 20% of the full cost of the event, plus charges incurred from guarantees and/or deposits made for guest. WHAT HAPPENS IF I HAVE TO LEAVE THE EVENT BEFORE IT IS OVER AND RETURN HOME? We have had cases where there is a death in the family, medical emergency, motor home breakdown, or an accident involving a motor home causing the participant to leave the event early. If this were to happen to you, you will sign a “Release From Event Form” releasing Winnebago Outdoor Adventures and Winnebago Industries, Inc. of any liability concerning the event, with the understanding you will not receive a refund for monies paid to Winnebago Outdoor Adventures for the event. We encourage you to have Trip Cancellation Insurance, as there are no refunds once the event starts. TOUR CANCELLATION INSURANCE: Cancellation insurance can be purchased through Farm and City Insurance. For a quote, and to understand what is covered, and what is not covered, call 1-800-331-1520. WHO IS RESPONSIBLE IN CASE OF DAMAGE OR INJURY SUSTAINED ON THE CARAVAN/ADVENTURE? Winnebago Outdoor Adventures acts as an agent only for suppliers who provide the services advertised. Winnebago Outdoor Adventures and Winnebago Industries, Inc., accepts no liability for damage or injury sustained on tours. HEALTH POLICY: It is necessary that persons requiring assistance be accompanied by a companion who is capable of, and totally responsible for providing assistance. Come prepared to substitute your own food if vendors will not substitute certain foods for you. • You are required to have a care provider with you throughout this event if you are not able to conduct essential life functions necessary in participating on an adventure or caravan, such as driving a motor home in a safe and proper manner, maintaining normal care and maintenance of motor home, walking without assistance, or good vision. • The care provider is responsible for assisting you with your special needs. • Scooters can be loaded into the bus bays, and wheelchairs are to be collapsible. When the bus is not able to accommodate a scooter or wheelchair, the guest can drive his/her tow car or not participate in the event. WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO GO ON AN EVENT WITH WINNEBAGO OUTDOOR ADVENTURES? The following are some of the comments sent in from our event participants: • The planning is all done for us. • The security of having hosts and tailenders. • A chance to make new friends. • The convenience of door-to-door bus travel. • Received excellent value for our money and time. • Stress free travel. • Seeing places we would not take the time to see on our own. • Hosts, tour guides, drivers were the best! I might add to this that there are several rallies where we have the best guides in the area who may have retired, or people who we have found that have more knowledge of the area than anyone, who will only do tours for WIT. • The side trips were all very good and well organized. • Friendly people. • Rally host and assistants were very knowledgeable, helpful, friendly and willing to assist. • The marvelous food and tours! • The variety of events were excellent, and we got a lot for our money. • Well organized, constant follow-ups, good teamwork, outstanding tour. • The overall professional handling of the tour. • We have taken escorted European tours, all inclusive cruises with tours, and other travel, and this by far has been one of our best experiences.
