This annual event is a great opportunity to get introduced to the administration, counselors, teachers and coaches at Sprague High School. The program begins with a welcome in our lower gym followed by an opportunity to meet and talk with our staff about the classes, clubs, activities and sports offered at Sprague. Parents, guardians, and students are welcome to attend. Curriculum Night ends at 8:00pm. We hope to see you there. Winter 2014 Checking Your Students In and Out of School Anytime students arrive late to school or leave early, they must sign in and sign out through the attendance office to be excused, including during passing and/or lunch time. Students signing out must have a parent note or parents need to call the attendance office before their student is allowed to leave campus. Sprague High School Speech and Debate program Instructor Michael Curry and the Speech and Debate program at Sprague High School have earned significant recognition by the National Forensic League. Students earn points and degrees in the National Forensic League’s honor society based on competitive and service-related activities. The Sprague Speech and Debate program has earned a significant number of points, is ranked among the top 10% of schools nationwide, and has earned membership in the National Forensic League’s “100 Club.” The milestone is remarkable because it demonstrates outstanding commitment to teaching students essential life skills – including communicators, ethical individuals, critical thinkers, and leaders in a democratic society. In October the team attended the 2013 Jerry Hudson tournament hosted at Willamette University. Special recognition goes to Brandon Roth for quarter-finaling in the Lincoln Douglas debate, to Quentin Michael and Olivia Wall for semi-finaling in Parliamentary Debate, Jonah Calhoun for placing second in Humorous Interpretation, Aujalee Fisher for placing second in Oratory, and again to Quentin Michael for placing first in Extemporaneous Speaking. Congratulations to Brittany Davis (president), Christy Cheng (vice president), and Blake Gesik (secretary). French National Honor Society The French National Honor Society welcomes the following new members for the 20132014 school year: Paula Armitage, Georgia Armitage, Carly Alexander, Sophia Backus, Niki Bagasani, Acacia Bailey, Colin Daniels,Evette Dow, Kendra Howard, Bella Lor, Emma Salmony, Danae Thaten, Myra Tran, Brooke Verville Spanish Club officers: Valerie Baez, vice-president, Ryan Topping, treasurer; Payton Killip, secretary; and Justin Hanes, president Spanish Club The Sprague Spanish Club has had monthly meetings since October and membership is growing! In December, the members got together to learn about how some Hispanic cultures celebrate winter holidays and had their own Mexican posada complete with ponche Navideño. They also held a fundraiser to raise money for the Hoover School Library as part of the Hoover School holiday collection that Sprague participates in every year. Currently the club is applying for a charter in the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica which is an Honor Society for high school students. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of every month at lunch. ¡Feliz Año Nuevo! The Torch Health Services Community Service The Health Services II class recently completed a community service project focusing on fundraising for CCS Forever Homes. Forever Homes is a place where foster children permanently live. Instead of moving from home to home, the foster parents come to them, resulting in a more stable environment for the children. Lance Blankenship, John Chambers, and Kayla Duke organized the project and were assisted in the fundraising efforts by the Health Services I class. Together, along with help from Success Fitness, the group raised over $500 for the organization. The students also established an agreement with Performance Health Technology and Mission Medical Imaging to match the funds that were raised. This resulted in a final donation of $2000! Thank you to all of the businesses, Sprague students and staff that supported our efforts. CCS Forever Homes will have a brighter holiday season because of our combined efforts. Page 3 Video Production Crew at Sprague Have you been at the Sprague football games on Friday nights? Have you seen the large screen TV in the south end concession tent? This is an example of our students involved in authentic learning. Sprague’s Video Production Crew has been working hard learning a new skill. Our students get the opportunity to run a live broadcast of our Friday night football games. These students show up early for all Friday night home games and get the equipment all set up. They run lots of cable, get the cameras set up, and get ready for all the excitement of the game. Each person has a job to do. With a couple students running cameras, a student in charge of replays and a director, it is a great team effort. A big thank you to Jim Plant and NewTek for the donation of an amazing Tricaster. Also, thanks to John Strauch for his time and efforts training our students how to put all the pieces together. Stay tuned for more exciting opportunities for these students. Christina Lilly Oregon School Counselor of the Year At the annual Oregon School Counselor Association conference in Bend, Oregon Christina Lilly was given the School Counselor of the Year award. When she came to Sprague the department was struggling and in transition. She was able to quickly build strong relationships with the staff and students. Her currently supervisor says, ‘her positive attitude and work ethic made an immediate impact’. Last year two new counselors joined the department. Christina quickly took them under her wing and supported them as they became members of the department. Miss Lilly, as the students call her, often has a line of students outside her door. They know that she will help them with schedules, relationship worries, mental health concerns and any other stressors that come their way. Miss Lilly is a respite for many of the students at Sprague. Word that Miss Lilly was a good person to talk to spread quickly through the students. Christina is able to work with parents. She offers them practical solutions or support for ideas such as ‘tough love’ when needed. Parents find her easy to talk to and knowledgeable not only about what their children may need but what they can do to support their child. They also feel heard and understood when they talk with her. Christina currently is the past president of the Oregon School Counselor’s Association. She is mentoring the current president and supporting her as she learns the job and what it entails. As a board member Christina has always been able to ask for clarification or make an insightful comment about what was being discussed. She is quick to see the issues and to formulate a plan of action. Christina Lilly is a skilled school counselor. She is knowledgeable about the profession. She has attended national leadership trainings as well as national conferences. She is passionate about the students she works with and continually strives to do the best she can to support them, often working into the night. She mentors new counselors in the profession both at school and through the state organization. The Oregon School Counselor Organization is very happy to congratulate Christina Lilly as the School Counselor of the Year, 2012-2013. Page 4 The Torch DECA News Sprague School Store Gets a Facelift This past summer, the Oly Lounge, Sprague’s student based enterprise, was moved from its previous location to a new spot, room 144. This bigger space allows for a much larger student lounge area, keeping the store’s vision true to its name. With multiple tables and chairs added, a new huge flat screen TV, and easy access for students to filter in through the library as well as from the hallway, the Oly Lounge is enjoying more traffic than ever. The store has also added additional blender stations for drink making, cookie ovens, a freezer, ice machine, refrigerator, and a second cash register so that it can accommodate more business and move kids through the line faster. One of the store manager’s, Cara Hardy says, “These changes have really affected business in a positive way!” The new Oly Lounge is open. We also modified our store hours so we're now open Monday and Wednesdays after school from 2:30-3:00pm in addition to having hours before school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so that parents can stop by and make purchases and to accommodate students heading off to a sports practice or club activity meeting. An added bonus was the fact that the local Applebee’s restaurant was in the process of remodeling their store at the same time as our refurbishment so we were able to obtain lots of old vintage Sprague memorabilia they’d had hanging up, and use them for the Oly Lounge’s décor, adding both a historic and nostalgic feel. Some of the advanced art students are also painting a wall mural to showcase the many clubs and activities Sprague has to offer students. For more info on the Oly Lounge, please visit our webpage accessible from the Sprague HS Our DECA display in the Oly Lounge homepage. The Torch Page 5 DECA Sports Marketing Seminar a Slam Dunk with Students Each year students that are part of Sprague’s Business club DECA have an opportunity to attend a Sports Marketing Business Day in Portland. The students participate in a two-hour long professional business seminar and then get to watch a Trailblazer game at the Moda Center. This year students were treated to hearing from three guest speakers who are employed by the Trailblazers. They shared information as to what a typical day on the job is like for them, how they got to where they are in their careers, and answered the many questions that the kids had for them. It was an exciting game against the Houston Rockets and the cheer squad gave the students special fan noisemaker sticks to enhance their experience. Sprague DECA helps prepare students for career tracks in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. For more information, please see Ms. Pollard in room 142. Our DECA students at the Moda Center AVID News DECA Sports Marketing Seminar at the Moda Center AVID College Visits During the first week of December, all of the AVID classes participated in college visits. The freshmen went to George Fox University in McMinnville. The sophomores journeyed out to Oregon State University in Corvallis and the junior/senior class traveled up to Portland to tour Portland State. College visits are an important element of the AVID elective. They provide students with a glimpse of college life and the opportunity to ask questions about everything from financial aid to dorm life. At the end of their tours, the students ate lunch on campus before returning to school. Letters to Heroes On Friday, November 15th, students in Miss Downs’ 9th grade AVID elective participated in a service project to benefit American heroes. AVID students wrote thank you cards that were sent to Operation Write Home, an organization that distributes the cards to men and women currently serving in the American military around the world. Students wrote sincere messages of thanks and inspiration onto handmade and store-bought cards. A strong correlation exists between the students’ academic success in school and his/her attendance. A student is expected to be present in each of his/her classes during any grading period in order to meet the goals and objectives of the class. In terms of attendance, a student is either present or absent. 1. An unexcused absence is one which is neither excused nor official, and may result in disciplinary action. 3. Official absence: Field trips and activities, school action which prevents the students from attending classes. Pre-arranged Absences When a student knows in advance of a planned absence or other situation where he/she will be out of school 3 or more days, the attendance office has available prearranged absence notes for the student to take to their teachers for a signature and to receive homework assignments. Please allow several days prior to the absence to make the necessary arrangements with the student’s teachers. Protocol for excused absences Parents have 3 days to submit an acceptable written or verbal explanation to excuse the student’s absence. Procedure for Tardies It is necessary for students to stop at the attendance office to fill out a tardy slip when any of the following examples apply: • Student is late to class for any reason, • Student is late to class and has a note from a staff member excusing tardy, • Student is just arriving at school for the day, • Student is coming back to school to check-in after a short absence. Express Clearing Full Day Absences To save time, you may access the message machine as follows to quickly clear full day absences: • Dial 503-399-5520 or 503-399-5575 • At the prompt please record the student’s full name, student ID#, and date of the absence and reason for the absence. Tune in for school news; please do not call the school! As the threat of snowy and icy weather approaches, parents and students should listen to local radio and television stations to learn of school closures due to inclement weather. If you do not hear any information, it is safe to assume district schools are open or have resumed their regular schedule. ¿Mal tiempo?
