Micro-library
Nippon TV came to film our Lewisham
Way library on 19 May. ‘We are interested
in filming libraries in Britain because
more books are read in your country than
anywhere else in the world,’ said Director
Satoshi Yamashita, seen here examining the
book selection, watched by Mikiyo Usui
from Don Productions. Sue Bennett, right,
is one of our micro librarians, as are some
pupils from Ashmead School.
Zoom Nursery opens on Lewisham Way
After a lengthy pregnancy, the new Zoom
Brockley nursery is now open!
Zoom Brockley is a 103 place setting,
working with children from 3 months to 5
years. We are truly passionate, dedicated and
committed to providing the best in childcare
and development.
We have three other sites based at Hither
Green, Eltham and Blackheath, all of which
have ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted judgements. The
new Brockley nursery is based on Lewisham
Way, and we are looking forward to becoming
a key member of the local community.
If you have any questions, please do not
hesitate to contact Zoom at: headoffice@
zoomnurseries.com.
lThe handsome building that was formerly
the Welsh Chapel on Lewisham Way has now
become Zoom Nursery. Members of Brockley
Society’s planning group visited it during its
extensive refurbishment and were pleased to
see that the historical aspects of the building,
one of the oldest on Lewisham Way, have been
sensitively preserved. The right-hand building
dates from 1823; the adjoining hall on the left
was built in 1924.
Ladywell Food Assembly launches new scheme
A new initiative has started in Ladywell
where you buy from local producers (within
50 miles), reduce waste, and eat delicious
food. Become a member and you’ll be able
to order online each week and collect every
Tuesday from 5.30 to 7.30pm at the Ladywell
Tavern. There are 12 suppliers offering fresh
meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, cheese and other
products. What they offer each week changes
depending what is in season. You can order
as little or as much as you like, and there’s no
commitment to buy. https://thefoodassembly.

National recognition
Sebastian Handley, who created the microlibrary, was named a Point of Light on World
Book Day in March by the Prime Minister.
The award recognises outstanding individual
volunteers who are making a change in
their community and inspiring others. We’re
delighted with this recognition for Sebastian.

The Victorian post box at the corner of
Montague Avenue adjoining Tressillian
Road was severely damaged. There were
fears that it would be removed altogether,
but we are delighted to report that it has
now been repaired.
In February last year we reported on a
demolished phone box in Wickham Road
near St Andrews church. Sadly, that was
removed and not replaced.

Little Legs Need Local Schools
Has your child been offered a primary place
at a school not of your choice? This year
274 children in Lewisham did not receive
a place at one of their six primary school
preferences. Families are now faced with
the prospect of having to travel outside
of the local community (some as far as
3 miles) to get their children to a school
that they did not choose. For many, this is
simply not possible due to work or other
childcare commitments. Our children are
missing out on the benefits of belonging to
a local school, and as parents we are losing
the support network that comes with going
to school in your local area. If your child is
one of the 274 and you want your case to
be heard, please visit our Facebook page or

ANZAC in Spirit: Diggers in Gallipoli
A Public Art Exhibition on Saturday
18 and Sunday 19 July, 11am–4.30pm,
in the Ladywell Cemetery Chapel will
commemorate the 100th Anniversary
of the ANZAC Landings, focusing on
the Australian and New Zealand Army
Corps landings from 7 destroyers on
25th April 1915, the 7 Battles in August
1915, and the evacuations in December
1915 due to the incompetence of 7 of
the generals managing the August
Offensives.
In his diaries Charles Bean, the official
Australian war correspondent, although
aware of the poor training, inflexible
command, and poor leadership, dwells
on the mateship, endurance, reckless
courage, and humour of the ANZACs.
This is explored through the artworks
of Nicky Scott-Francis, Sara Scott,
Jill Rock, Elizabeta Chojak-Mysko,
Monica Wheeler, Louise Kosinska and
Jolanta Jagiello.
A guided walk to graves of ANZAC
troops in the Ladywell Cemetery will
start from the Chapel at 2pm each day.
The Friends of Brockley & Ladywell
Cemeteries will be holding its 8th
Anniversary Open Day on Sunday 12th
July 2015, 11am - 4.30pm.
The Chapel in the Ladywell
Cemetery will display information
and an exhibition, as well as house the
refreshment stand with its homemade
cakes.
Guided walks round the Cemeteries
will include themes such as wildflowers,
butterflies and birds, as well as the
Great War and other historical themes.

There were amazing scenes in Peckham on
11 May as Lyndhurst Way was closed off to
make way for 18 Household Cavalry horses.
With school children and shopkeepers, artist
Melissa Jo Smith was recreating a postcard

taken in 1915 for her #PeckhamWarhorse
project. Also present for the reenactment was

Save Lewisham Toy Library – Petition and Trustees
One of the local area’s longest
serving charity services is
under threat from Council
cuts and massively increased
rental rates (the Council is
proposing to increase premises costs by more
than £10,000pa).
After more than 42 years in operation, we
need your support in many ways, including
our online petition to communicate how
much the service is valued. If you have ever
used the Lewisham Toy Library, please sign
the petition - http://lewishamtoylibrary.
org.uk/about-us/save-lewisham-toy-library/
petition/. Some of you may even be children
of the Toy Library!
Most importantly, we need additional
Trustees, especially anyone who has
experience in fundraising, IT or community
centre management. Many changes will be
needed if the Library is to survive, and we
need motivated people to help make the
Lewisham Toy Library the best in the UK.
If you are interested, please send your CV
and cover letter (not more than 2 pages each)
to [email protected].
Lewisham Choral Society
Come and support your local choral
society in the splendid setting of Cadogan
Hall, Sloane Square. On Saturday 4 July
at 7.30pm we will perform the thunderous
Carmina Burana and some tender love
songs by Eric Whitacre. The programme
also includes a lively piano and violin
sonata by Mozart. Cadogan Hall is easy to
reach by public transport and near to other
attractions such as the Saatchi Gallery. We
would love to see you there! Full details on

A date for your diaries: Cherubini
Requiem at Goldsmiths Great Hall on 14
November.
St Gregorios Indian Orthodox Church
I attended the joyful carol
service at St Gregorios Indian
Orthodox Church last December,
representing Brockley Society.
I was warmly welcomed by the
Vicar, Father Thomas John, and
by the congregation,
The Church was founded by St
Thomas, one of Christ’s twelve
apostles, who went to India in
A.D. 52. The congregation comes
from far and wide, but the church
is part of the Brockley community,
based in what was formerly St
Peter’s Hall in Cranfield Road.
Last November a warm invitation
was extended to the community
to join the Holy Procession with
percussion band, part of the 44th
London Perunal.
Earlier this year the church
gave a donation of £250 to
Brockley Society. We are very
grateful for this generosity
and we will use this money
for smaller projects in the area
where it is most needed.
After the beautiful carol
ceremony in the packed church
I asked Father Thomas to
arrange a visit to the church
where some of us from
Brockley’s community could
hear about their ancient origins
and beliefs. We will confirm the
date and circulate details.
More information about St
Gregorios church can be found

Tree planting campaign continues
We are now seeking sponsorship for the next
round of street tree plantings in the 2015/16
season. As many will by now have heard,
our last season - 2014/15 - was our most
successful to date, with a total of 36 new street
trees planted in Brockley and beyond. We
are particularly grateful for the substantial
donation by E. Ashfield which has enabled so
many more part-funded trees. We are in the
process of making a photographic record of
all our new trees and have also started to fix
labels to each tree to advertise our work and
get the message out.
This is where the local community can
support our efforts. We need people who can
either fully - or part-fund new street trees, or
offer to become wardens (which essentially
boils down to keeping
trees watered for the first
two years and reporting
problems or damage).
Already, we have twelve
trees sponsored for this
coming season, and we
have an ambitious target
to plant one hundred (yes,
you read that right - 100!!)
new trees in the 2015/16
season. At our last ’ Tree
Enthusiasts’ event at The
Talbot in March we also
announced a scheme to encourage people to
plant trees in celebration or commemoration
of a significant event.
Trees clean our air
If you came to our “Trees in the City”
conference in spring 2014 you will remember
the excellent presentation given by Professor
Barbara Maher of Lancaster University’s
Environment Centre by video link. She
presented the astonishingly effective benefits
of planting a screen of silver birch saplings
alongside busy roads to capture particulate
pollution, mostly generated by diesel
powered cars.
Poor air quality has figured in the news
almost weekly in the first few months of
this year. Reports warn of the serious
consequences of high levels of airborne
pollution, including premature death and the
increased risk
of stroke.
The Lancaster
E nv i r o n m e n t
Centre has now
published
a
very accessible
s u m m a r y
of
their
c o n s i d e r abl e
research into the
complex effects
of urban trees
on the clearing
of air pollution
If any of this appeals to you, or you would
like further information, you can express your
interest via our blog where we have been busy
making it easier for you to offer your help

Hilly Fields dawn chorus walk rewards early birds
It was a 6am start for this year’s Dawn
Chorus Walk which covered both Hilly Fields
and the Brockley and Ladywell cemeteries.
Over 20 people turned up, and the birds were
singing lustily. However, 42 mph winds were
blowing, and this made it difficult at times
to hear even well-known songbirds such
as the Blackbird, Robin and Wren. But we
persevered, had very good views of a pair of
Mistle Thrushes, heard the ‘laugh’ or ‘yaffle’
of a Green Woodpecker and some of us
heard the song of a late rising Chaffinch. The
Goldfinches disgraced themselves by staying
in ‘bed’ - wherever that was.
In the cemeteries, we heard a Song Thrush
singing from some distance away, then heard a
Chiffchaff singing and tracked it down so that
some of the group could see it. Chiffchaffs
are warblers named after their staccato song,
migrants from Africa and the Med which
come here to breed in the spring. By now it
was full daylight and within a few minutes we
were lucky enough to see three Jays and catch
brief glimpses of a Sparrowhawk and of the
elusive Goldcrest which is Britain’s smallest
bird. After that, everybody went home or off
to work!
21 species were seen or heard: Blackbird,
Shop Fronts - better design is needed
Our last newsletter highlighted that shop
frontage and public realm improvements were
important to: improve the street scene and
the overall look of the Conservation Area,
create a better sense of wellbeing, encourage
passersby to stop and buy, halt environmental
erosion and — most importantly — slow
down economic decline
Ways forward
The key question raised following our
walkabout of shopping parades in Lewisham
Way and Brockley Road in January was how
to avoid poor, careless and unsympathetic
alterations, challenge the widespread use of
poor materials, lettering and standardised
shop front designs, and deal with
inappropriate attention-grabbing signs and
corporate branding.
Our answer was to produce a brochure to
cover the principles of good design, explain
planning consents required, and to offer
advice and guidance in a simple and easy
to read way. The outcome is the Society’s
Shop Front Design Guide which is on www.
brockleysociety.org.uk - scroll down to
Shopfronts and Signage and follow links.
The brochure has been circulated to shop
owners in Lewisham Way and Brockley
Road as well as to Brockley Assembly,
other Amenity Societies, Ward Councillors,
Planners and other officials. The response
has been positive and the need now is to
ensure our message of ‘getting rid of the
clutter’ continues to be spread and be
actioned. Other leaflets are being planned
on windows, extensions and backland
development.
