BOOK THE WEEKEND! January 13, 14 & 15, 2012
A very special weekend of Olmsted, Authors, Lectures and Book Signings.... stop in, call, or order your books
through our website before the event to guarantee you’ll get a copy of each. Attend the events to meet
the authors and have them autographed after the program.
Friday, January 13, 2012, 7:00 p.m. The Frederick Law Olmsted Society Annual Meeting at the Riverside Township Hall. Olmsted biographer, Justin Martin, author of Genius of Place: The Life Frederick Law Olmsted, will
present a lecture on Olmsted’s works. Books will be available for purchase and autographing. $30*.
Saturday, January 14th at 1:00 p.m. in the Great Room of the Library, Justin Martin will lecture on his biography
on Olmsted’s life, answer questions and sign books. $30*. Mr. Martin is the author of three biographies**. He
is a graduate of Rice University in Houston, TX, and lives with his wife and sons in Forest Hills Gardens, NY.
SUNDAY, JANUARY 15TH AT 2:00 p.m. in the Great Room of the Library, Riverside Author David Scheffer will give
a talk, answer questions about the war crimes tribunals, and then be available for book signing. Book
$35.00***
All the Missing Souls: A Personal History of the War Crimes Tribunals (Human Rights and Crimes Against Humanity) Within days of Madeleine Albright's confirmation as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations in 1993,
she instructed David Scheffer to spearhead the historic mission to create a war crimes tribunal for the former
Yugoslavia. As senior adviser to Albright and then as President Clinton's ambassador-at-large for war crimes
issues, Scheffer was at the forefront of the efforts that led to criminal tribunals for the Balkans, Rwanda, Sierra
Leone, and Cambodia, and that resulted in the creation of the permanent International Criminal Court. All
the Missing Souls is Scheffer's gripping insider's account of the international gamble to prosecute those responsible for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, and to redress some of the bloodiest human rights atrocities in our time.
* Proceeds from the sale of the Olmsted book will go toward beginning the digitalization of the FLOS microfilmed writings.
**Copies of Mr. Martin’s other book (Greenspan: The Man Behind Money ) will also be available for purchase in limited quantities.
*** Proceeds from the sale of Mr. Scheffer’s book will benefit the Riverside Friends of the Library.

cosmology, “The Big Bang”. To sign up for the workshop, or for more information, please contact Dorothy
Sikora at the Library: [email protected]).
STEVE JUSTMAN PERFORMS SONGS OF THE
AMERICAN RAILROADS
Sunday, February 26th, 2:00 p.m. In the Great Room
Singer, troubadour, musician, entertainer, collector
and caretaker of songs. Steve Justman has been performing Americana and folk
music in the Chicago area
and neighboring Midwest
region for many years. A collector of songs as well as other artifacts of Americana, he
is in a way a throwback to a
different era, singing a mix of
traditional and popular folk,
pop standards, and classic country that people might
know while focusing on connecting with his audience.
This program is a labor of love program that will explore a portion of the great wealth of railroad songs
that have become part of America's folk music heritage. The railroads built this country, and the songs tell
the story of people and places centered around
many famous American railroads and their routes. Steve has been an avid model railroad collector for
years, and will bring a few examples to show some of
the great trains he sings about. This program is for all
ages.

MUSIC OF THE CIVIL WAR ON
HAMMERED DULCIMER
performed by Phil Passen
Saturday, February 11th, 1:30 p.m. in the Great Room
In Honor of Abraham Lincoln...a program for all ages. The hammered dulcimer was popular in the US
during the Civil War, and music of that era seems at
home played on this unique instrument. Many tunes
and songs in this program are still familiar today, others though less familiar are just as heartfelt. This
promises to be a fascinating program of historical
music. After this wonderful music program, stay for
the 3 p.m. Civil War Re-enactors program. Check on

WE “R” RIVERSIDE
The Riverside Public Library is very excited to announce 2012 as the
year of “green!” In conjunction with the third year of participation
in the Language of Conservation grant with the Brookfield Zoo, the
Library is planning an entire year full of green partnerships, programs
and activities. We hope to help the Library and our patrons reduce,
recycle, reuse, re-purpose, renew and recommit to a greener Riverside. We welcome interested organizations, groups, and individuals
who want to participate or partner with us as we plan our year. If
you are interested, please contact Library Director, Janice Fisher at (708) 442-6366, ext.
100 or [email protected]. An organization meeting will be held in early January so please make your interest known! GO GREEN!
Coming soon in 2012…. Go Cardless with CardStar™ and move that Library Card out of your wallet and onto your phone!
CardStar is an amazingly simple solution for managing digital versions of your plastic loyalty cards,
reward cards, club membership cards, and your Riverside Library Card. When you’re shopping or
on the go, quickly access your cards with a single touch from the CardStar app home screen. It’s
