Welcome Letter
Greetings Wireless EdTech 2011 Participant!
We would like to welcome you to the Wireless Education Technology Conference 2011 (Wireless EdTech) and
look forward to discussing the role of mobile wireless technologies in improving 21st century education.
From the opening reception on October 19th, through the last breakout sessions on October 21st, more than
50 speakers and 400 attendees will share their thoughts, challenges, experiences and questions surrounding
mobile learning.
The United States has an opportunity to reform education in a way that will truly prepare our students to
compete in the global economy. Mobile technology has a critical role to play in this effort by equipping students and teachers with 24/7 access to learning communities and information, as well as by fostering informal
learning.
Wireless EdTech 2011 is designed to specifically advance the dialogue about research, policy and practice
and to foster new discussions among a diverse group of stakeholders including leaders in business, K-12,
higher education and government. Beginning in 2010, this is the first series of conferences to focus on major
issues that must be resolved to realize the full potential of mobile broadband for learning.
We ask that you take an active role in the conversation by contributing your insights during the breakout sessions, participating in our polls and taking advantage of the networking times to meet new colleagues and
share ideas. With participants from government organizations, nonprofits, education and the private sector,
you will have the opportunity to:
•Synthesize knowledge from initiatives, both in the US and abroad, utilizing mobile technologies of various types to empower learning and teaching;
•Understand implementation strategies schools are using to adapt these initiatives to their local situation or to develop their own innovations; and
•Explore next steps in research, development, practice and policy for attaining the potential of mobile
wireless devices for every student and teacher.
After the conference concludes, please visit www.wirelessedtech.com to view speaker presentations, videos,
photos and other related materials. We hope that you also will share these valuable resources with your colleagues and follow the conversation on Twitter using hashtag #edtech11.
Thank you in advance for your participation at the conference and for your contributions to enhancing the
education environment.
Sincerely,
Chris Dede

Chairman
Federal Communications Commission
Since being sworn in as Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission in June
2009, Julius Genachowski has focused the agency on digital communications, particularly wired and wireless broadband -- pursuing policies to promote investment, unleash
innovation, and empower consumers. Under his leadership, the FCC developed and is
implementing the National Broadband Plan, an ambitious strategy to harness the opportunities of high-speed
Internet, and promote U.S. global competitiveness.
Prior to his FCC appointment, Genachowski spent more than a decade working in the technology and media

Chairman Reed Hundt, as well as Special Counsel to General Counsel William Kennard (later FCC Chairman.)
He has served as a U.S. Supreme Court law clerk for two years, for Justice David Souter and Justice William
J. Brennan, Jr. (Ret.), and as a clerk for Chief Judge Abner Mikva of the D.C. Circuit. Genachowski worked in
Congress on the staff of the House select committee investigating the Iran- Contra affair, and for then-U.S. Representative (now Senator) Charles E. Schumer.
Genachowski received a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1991 (magna cum laude), and served as co-Notes
Editor of the Harvard Law Review. In 1985, he received a B.A. from Columbia College (magna cum laude),
where he was Editor of Columbia Spectator’s Broadway Magazine, re-established Columbia’s oldest newspaper
(Acta Columbiana), and was a writer and researcher for Fred Friendly, former President of CBS News. He was
also a certified Emergency Medical Technician, served on the Columbia Area Volunteer Ambulance, and taught
cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
President Obama nominated Chairman Genachowski in March 2009, and he was confirmed by the Senate on
June 29, 2009. He was appointed to the Council of the Administrative Conference of the United States. He was
named by President Obama to lead the United States delegation to Poland for the commemoration of the 65th
anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

How To Use Poll Everywhere
Wireless EdTech is committed to advancing the discussion on 21st century learning. Throughout the conference,
we will be asking for your opinion on a variety of related topics and will be leveraging the Poll Everywhere system
to aid us in collecting responses. To vote with text messages, follow the on-screen instructions and send a text
message with a short keyword (e.g. “72612”) to Poll Everywhere’s short code, 22333.
For Example:
The presenter may ask: What are some of the best ways to teach with mobile broadband devices? And someone in the audience might text “(keyword or number) in real-world environments ” to 22333. Standard text message rates apply. The Poll Everywhere service is serious about your security. Your number will not be visible by
the speaker or used for other marketing purposes. Learn more at www.polleverywhere.com.
We look forward to your participation!

An hour-long investigation into the latest approaches to mobile and digital learning,
Digital Media: New Learners of the 21st Century premiered this spring on PBS stations
across the United States. Developed with major underwriting from the MacArthur
Foundation and the Pearson Foundation, this documentary takes viewers to the
front lines of the fast-developing revolution in the way young people learn and share
what they know – inside and outside the classroom.
Please enjoy this film with our compliments – a DVD is included in your registration
packet. We know that you will find these stories to be as remarkable and inspiring
as we do.
