Your Community Your Hospice Our Care Hospice Care Since 1985 Saint Catherine’s Hospice Newsletter Winter Edition 2012 1 ‘Thank You’ from Lee Barker, Chief Executive In October hospices across the country supported “Be Surprised” week. This week aims to raise awareness of the full range of ways in which hospices care for patients and their families and in most cases will mean that the audience will “be surprised”. Saint Catherine’s participated with a new leaflet launched at our AGM with some surprising facts and events showcasing the work of the hospice. We are very happy to show people around our building in Scarborough, so if you are just curious or you want to see what goes on behind the doors of that “building on the hill” then do please contact us. For many of you when you think of the hospice you will think of the building but actually the hospice is far more than just a building – it is the people who work or volunteer for us. It is also the care that we give and the ethos about how we deliver that care and look after our patients and their families. The “hospice” then reaches out across the whole area that we cover – Scarborough, Whitby, Ryedale, Bridlington and Driffield - and supports over 2000 patients per year. In return, your community supports the hospice contributing to raising the £4.5m a year that it costs to deliver our care free of charge to these 2000 patients. Without your support, we would not be able to look after so many people or provide the range of services that we do. We never fail to be surprised at the range of ways in which people so generously give of their time, their support or their generous donations and we are as ever, hugely appreciative. Thank you to everyone. Lee Barker, Chief Executive Words from the Chair It’s almost three years since I became Chairman of Saint Catherine’s and I continue to be surprised and heartened by the generosity of our community, both financially and in the time devoted by our volunteers. Although the last two years have been difficult because of the recession, the care for both patients and their families has remained at the highest level. It is my belief that the culture within the hospice is right. Everyone, be they employed or volunteering, is doing their best to ensure the quality of care remains high. We are all individual pieces of the jigsaw that go to make up the complete picture of excellent care. We have twelve shops all supported by volunteers working tirelessly to bring in much needed finance. Our support groups are always looking to expand their membership and come up with new ideas to raise cash in addition to running their regular coffee mornings and the like. Then there are others who run events to support your hospice. These events are too numerous to mention but I’ll refer to a couple. 2 Saint Catherine’s Hospice Newsletter Winter Edition 2012 arty ry Upson & Sharon Heg atient Unit Nurses Hila Ian pictured with In-P Back in April, on perhaps the wettest Sunday on record, I attended a tractor rally at Wold Newton. About 50 farmers had braved the elements to take part in this annual event to raise £800. The Landlady at the Anvil Pub supported the event as she has for a number of years. More recently, I attended The Black Bull Bender about 10 miles north of Whitby. This group of over 100 folk singers meet each year for a long weekend to sing (and drink) and raise money for both us and Butterwick Hospice. They presented me with a cheque for £2,500. We are grateful for the support we receive and despite the difficult times we strive to build on our success and provide additional care where we can. Ian Westmoreland Chairman As she reaches 25 years with Saint Catherine’s, Director of Patient Services Ann Harper has her eye on another lofty achievement. To celebrate the milestone and raise funds for Saint Catherine’s, Ann, is signed up to tackle an Everest Base Camp Challenge early next year. It will entail joining an organised trek across difficult terrain at altitude to reach the base camp, at 5,332m. For Ann the trip will be the fulfilment of a personal ambition as well as a chance to support Saint Catherine’s and the work it does in the community. “It is something I have always wanted to do,” she says. “I know it will be tough because I have walked at altitude before, but it will also be a tremendous experience to see this amazing place and sample a completely different culture. At altitude the lack of oxygen makes walking uphill, over difficult terrain, very demanding on the body and can leave you quite nauseous,” added Ann. Ann is preparing for next March’s organised trek by getting as fit as possible. She has set up a JustGiving site for people to support her challenge, with all money raised going to Saint Catherine’s. L Luke Barnet jjoins the Senior Management M Team at Saint T Catherine’s C I joined the team in July as the Director of Business Operations and was immediately struck by the commitment of the staff and volunteers in the delivery of fantastic care and support. I was also impressed at the breadth of services offered by Saint Catherine’s ranging from what I saw as ‘traditional’ hospice inpatient and day patient services to, disease specific clinics and outreach services into local hospitals, care homes and the community. Coming from the acute hospital sector my perceptions of hospices were also challenged as I found Saint Catherine’s to have a bright and positive atmosphere. In short I was and continue to be impressed. I am excited to be working at the Hospice and hope to use my experience of working in New Zealand and in a large Manchester Hospital Trust to support Saint Catherine’s continued development. Much of my new role involves ensuring that services ranging from maintenance to IT run smoothly, enabling staff and volunteers to deliver excellent care, and collating and sharing the results of that care to inform others and hopefully provide the evidence for the new commissioning groups to commission our care. As the year progresses I look forward to meeting many more of our supporters as without your donations of time and money Saint Catherine’s would not be the organisation it is. If you would like to sponsor Ann. visit: www.justgiving.com/Ann-Harper Dancing Leaves Leaves are dancing on the green To soothing winds which can’t be seen. They crinkle and rustle along the ground To the dulcet tones of that ‘Autumn’ sound. Skipping and whirling as they go Depending where the strong winds blow. Quite suddenly they then convene To re-arrange their dancing scene. Gleefully rejoicing now they are free Being so long attached to yonder tree Yet, remembering still, as they keep their distance It is to the tree they owe their existence. G Dobson, In Patient The Lottery has launched a new £200 weekly rollover prize, with a jackpot of up to £5,000, along with the other weekly prizes of £1,000, £50, £25 and fifty £10 prizes. Home is where most re people would rather be when poorly, and the caring role is what makes p iit possible for many people to continue to be looked after there, even when they are seriously ill or unable to look after themselves in many w iimportant respects. Caring for someone can bring with it many demands and pressures, and for some people it is in effect a full-time role. It also means dealing with and learning about a lot of things the carer may not have experienced in the past. From medical matters to physical care, and from legal and financial matters to communicating with health professionals. This all brings with it demands on time, physical demands, and also emotional pressures. s taking part rer A group of Ca ssions in the trial se Saint Catherine’s is very aware of how important unpaid carers are to its patients. We also know that supporting carers will help us to better support our patients, and make it possible for them to be well cared for at home. It is the carer who very often is the one who holds things together in between the medical and professional services which are involved. With this in mind, we are holding a series of six trial sessions in October and November this year. The sessions will offer practical advice and information to help carers anticipate and therefore be prepared for many of the situations which they may face. The sessions will then be reviewed and if successful and helpful to the attending carers the programme will be extended in the next year. Care Home Project A team of Clinical Nurse Specialists at Saint Catherine’s are developing and testing a pilot scheme in Scarborough to deliver training and clinical support to care home staff with the aim of enhancing palliative and end of life care within care homes. The team:- Dr Sarah Callin, Tina Gale, Sarah Locker (Team Leader) & Emma Arn ott These Nurse Specialists will work alongside care home staff, Macmillan Nurses, GPs, District Nurses, Neurology Nurses and other h health and social care professionals who wo work in the community. Th are aiming i i to t help h l professional f i l staff in residential and They nursing homes to deliver high quality end of life care and to improve communication and co-ordination between the various social and health services as well as deliver education within the care home setting. Training and clinical support will also be offered in the principles of palliative care, including the consideration of the patient’s wishes and preferences in end of life care and planning in advance for end of life care pathways. The training takes into consideration symptom assessment, management and medication suitable for end of life care, as well as focusing on the PALCALL telephone helpline offered by Saint Catherine’s Hospice. 4 Saint Catherine’s Hospice Newsletter Winter Edition 2012 Co-ordinators of the sessions David Slater & Fiona Marshall LL A SILVERMaBA rch 2013 Saturday 9th Dinner Dancing Members Pavilion Driffield Showground Call 01377 270118 Organised by the Driffield Support Group to celebrate 25 years of fundraising for Saint Catherine’s Hospice The Driffield support group are planning to celebrate 25 years of fundraising for Saint Catherine’s with a special programme of events starting this November. Our garden is hugely appreciated by visitors wishing to take time out or remember loved ones and this grant will make a big difference to our patients and their families’. Saint Catherine’s Whitby Day Hospice recently received £500 from the Co-Operative Community Fund to help with the redevelopment of the garden. With that and the hard work of o volunteer Keith, K the garden g at the Day D Hospice on Mulgrave Crescent has Keith has worked hard over the last months to re-generate the garden area using plants and stones and creating beautiful flower beds reflecting the sea-faring life of Whitby. As well as the care and treatment you might expect in the Inpatient Unit, we provide: symptom management, pain management and respite for an average of thirty admissions a month. We encourage patients and families to live and enjoy life to their full potential. What may surprise you is we also enjoy some very memorable occasions such as christenings, golden wedding parties, weddings and most recently a wonderful party to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The ‘Eatmore Pudding Club’ Ladies have done it again with ‘Cakes Bakes & Sweet Treats’ In 2005 the Eatmore Pudding Club produced its first recipe book and all 3,000 copies were sold with all the profit from the books coming to the Hospice. The ladies have now produced a second book and again all the money from the sales will be in aid of the Hospice. The group have been holding fundraising events over the last 9 months and have raised d the £3,950 to pay for the printing and publication of the recipe book, called Cakes Bakes & Sweet weet Treats. Margaret Woodcock, one of the five club members, had cancer over 15 years ago a and is now completely cured, but she has been left with ly lymphoedema in her legs and attends regular clinicss at S ney Saint Catherine’s. She was first inspired to raise money ffor the Hospice in 2004 when the Hospice moved to itits present site and the Out Patients Clinic needed ed lo st lots of new equipment and since then she has just ‘‘carried on’. B Back in February 2012 the lease for the new shop on Victoria Road was signed and n over the following ten to twelve weeks the o former tile and bathroom shop had to be completely re-vamped! Local companies Willmott Dixon and Yorkshire Coast Homes kindly helped with the renovation which involved moving lots of rubble before work could begin. The new shop now has three times the sales area compared to the old shop on the North Marine Road site and is able to offer electrical items for sale six days a week instead of just the two days previously available. The large display area at the front of the shop contains furniture of all kinds with beds, bedding and electrical in the rooms to the rear as well as a large storage area. The extra space and convenience for shoppers has proved a huge success with sales exceeding expectations. It is hoped the eBay shop will eventually earn Saint Catherine’s up to £80,000 a year for patient care. Very often Saint Catherine’s 12 shops are donated items which may sell for a lot more money on e-bay than in the shops. It is the perfect way of marketing to people who have never thought to browse in a charity shop before! The shop managers and volunteers are 6 Saint Catherine’s Hospice Newsletter Winter Edition 2012 looking out for special items which will sell better through eBay. Neil receives these goods from the shops and they then need to be sorted, researched, photographed, itemised and placed on e-bay. If sold, goods are packaged and posted. If unsold, items are redistributed back to the Hospice shops. Retail Manager, Debbie Jewison said ‘This opens up a much bigger market to us and will help us to make the most of items generously donated by our supporters’. The whole operation involves a lot of work and Neil is looking for more volunteers who would be interested in helping him to sort through miscellaneous boxes of collectables, new clothing and IT items. S Strictly Learn Dancing – The Fabulous Finale! H Having never danced before nine couples spent nine weeks training with the Anne Taylor School of Dance to develop their ‘strictly’ dancing skills. On Saturday the 18th August at The Theatre Ballroom on the Flower of May Holiday Park they took to the dance floor in true “Strictly” style and our brave couples battled it out in front of a panel of judges and a capacity audience! o The evening was outrageously glamorous and d all nine couples were simply fantastic - dancing g the ChaChaCha, Mambo, the Waltz and the e Quickstep. Hospice Fundraiser Louise Gravestock said d “I was truly amazed, they were so brilliant.. Family and friends came out in force and the atmosphere was fantastic. The group became so close during rehearsals and between them they raised the fabulous sum of £7000.00 for patient care” Special thanks to the Anne Taylor School of Dance, Hair Experience and the Flower of May Holiday Park for making event p possible! g this special p Keep up to date with our latest news and fundraising activities by logging on to our page at facebook.com Supporting us is now even easier.
