VNSNY Hospice Care 2012 Lec ture S er ies
Dr. Klagsbrun is a faculty member in Psychiatry at the Columbia
University College of Physicians and Surgeons and a former Visiting
Professor of Pastoral Psychiatry at Jewish Theological Seminary.
He is a member of the Advisory Council of both the Yale University
School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry and the American
Friends Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, Israel.
He holds the title of Visitor at St. Christopher’s Hospice in London,
the hospice founded by Dame Saunders. He served as a teacher at
St. Christopher’s and worked directly with Saunders for many years
as a management consultant. He was invited to offer the Eulogy at Westminster Abbey,
following her death on July 14, 2005.
In addition to his unique closeness to the founder of the hospice movement,
Dr. Klagsbrun is known internationally for his work on the psychological issues facing
cancer patients and on hospice care, as well as medical ethics at end-of-life.
The Dame Cicely Saunders Celebration honors Dame Saunders
as founder of the modern hospice movement. She established
St. Christopher’s Hospice in London in 1967 to meet the physical,
social, psychological and spiritual needs of dying patients and their
family. A nurse, medical social worker and finally also a physician
and writer, Saunders is acclaimed for improving end-of-life care
around the globe. This event celebrates her life work on what
would be her 94th birthday (June 22,1918 – July 14, 2005).
