WGBH’s Rebecca Eaton, executive producer of Masterpiece, is on a roll:
Downton Abbey (winner of nine emmys and two Golden Globes) and Sherlock
have added millions of fans to PBs’s enduring and beloved drama series. now
rebecca looks like she has another hit on her hands: Mr. Selfridge, a new,
eight-part Masterpiece co-produced with itv studios, premiering this month
(see page 18), that has taken the UK by storm.
it all started, not surprisingly, with a book—in this case, a nonfiction
work with the provocative title Shopping, Seduction, and Mr. Selfridge. “it was
a biography of Harry Gordon selfridge, the founder
of London’s famed department store, that attracted
the attention of writer Andrew davies,” rebecca
explains. “And that’s what attracted our attention,
because Andrew is the go-to guy for period drama
in england.” rebecca has worked with Andrew on
some of Masterpiece’s most acclaimed productions,
including Little Dorrit, Bleak House and The Way We
Live Now.
Like Andrew, rebecca instantly saw the potential. “Harry selfridge was a
very complicated man,” she says. “He was hyperkinetic, a showman. He had a
loving family, but he also had affairs and always was surrounded by beautiful
women. He was an outsider who came into British society and fought his way
to the top. What a rich character for Andrew to explore!”
But there was another aspect that also appealed to rebecca: the location.
“Like Downton Abbey, Mr. Selfridge is a ‘precinct drama,’” she explains.
“Downton Abbey is set in a very beautiful, stately home. And in that beautiful
place, people love and cry and hate each other and betray each other and
have babies and dress beautifully. there are very rich stories. the same is true
with Mr. Selfridge and its glamorous department store setting.”
then there is the first-rate cast, led by Jeremy Piven, the emmy- and
Golden Globe-winning star of the hit tv series Entourage. “Jeremy is a very
versatile actor—energetic and intense. He’s the perfect fit to play Harry
selfridge, who came to London and was a game changer.”
Mr. Selfridge has all the makings of another masterpiece: strong central
characters, multiple plotlines, an intriguing setting and first-rate writing and
acting. Great drama produced by WGBH, and shared with the world, thanks
to your generous annual support.

breadth to our nation’s education reform debate, offering a close-up
look at a school that meets the needs of its most challenged students
in new and sometimes non-traditional ways. You’ll see a tireless
team of teachers and school leaders dealing with the usual antics
of teenagers and the changing
tides of a fast-moving administration as it responds to pressures
from outside partners, politicians
and forces in the community. A
surprising and dramatic end to the school year sheds light on both the
extraordinary challenges and opportunities faced by today’s public
schools. Also join tavis smiley in Education Under Arrest, as he looks at
the connection between the juvenile justice system and the dropout
rate among American teens, and examines efforts by educators, law
enforcement professionals, judges, youth advocates and at-risk teens
themselves to end this link.

Inside the
Modeling World
Go behind the pretty face of the modeling
industry by following two people whose
lives intersect because of it. Ashley is a
deeply conflicted American model scout, and
13-year-old Nadya, plucked from a remote
siberian village and promised a lucrative
career in Japan, is her latest discovery. As the
young girl searches for glamour and an escape from poverty, she
confronts the harsh realities of a culture that worships youth—and an
industry that makes perpetual childhood a globally traded commodity.

sit back and enjoy an evening of programs about award-winning
authors Philip Roth and Graham Greene. in candid interviews, roth
discusses intimate aspects of his life and art, as he has never done
before: his distinctly unliterary upbringing in newark, new Jersey; his
writing process; his first marriage; the inspiration behind his most
famous novels and many controversies. With 31 books to his credit,
including Goodbye, Columbus; Portnoy’s Complaint; Sabbath’s Theater;
American Pastoral and The Human Stain, roth
practically invented the genre of factual-fictional
autobiography and commands ownership of the
Jewish American novel. then turn your attention
to author Graham Greene, a British spy, doubting
Catholic and manic-depressive who wrote critically acclaimed best-sellers, including The Quiet
American, Brighton Rock, The End of the Affair and
The Third Man. the documentary about Greene
weaves his novels and movies into the story of his
life, revealing an extraordinary man who traveled
the globe to escape the boredom of ordinary
existence. Actor Bill nighy provides Greene’s voice.

Meet Mr. Selfridge
This month, WGBH’s Masterpiece brings
you the all-new Mr. Selfridge, a stunning
dramatization of the real-life story of
Harry Gordon Selfridge, the flamboyant
and visionary American founder of the
famous London department store that
revolutionized the modern shopping
experience. The eight-part drama is set
in London in 1909, a time when women
were reveling in a new sense of freedom
and modernity. Harry wants to indulge,
empower and celebrate these women by opening the doors of his
lavish department store on London’s famous Oxford Street. Pioneering
and reckless, and with an almost manic energy, Harry creates a theater
of retail where any topic or trend that is new, exciting, entertaining—
or just plain eccentric—is showcased. Jeremy Piven takes on the
role as Mr. Selfridge following a successful eight-season run on the hit
drama Entourage, for which he won three Emmys and a Golden Globe
for his portrayal of movie agent Ari Gold. Joining Piven is Katherine
Kelly (Coronation Street) as the confident and alluring socialite Lady
Mae, whose connections prove vital for Harry as he builds his empire.
Created by Andrew Davies (Little Dorrit). The series continues through
April and May.

Welcome Back, María
By Phil Redo
Managing Director of 89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio
We are pleased to welcome María Hinojosa,
longtime host of WGBH TV’s María Hinojosa:
One-on-One, back to our airwaves. Her weekly
NPR show, Latino USA, now airs every Sunday
night at 6pm on Boston Public Radio.
This isn’t the first time María has added her
voice to 89.7. We turned to her this past fall,
when the presidential election was heating up,
and asked her to join Morning Edition host Bob Seay to talk about the fastest
growing population group in our country: Latinos. She spoke about the
impact the election might have on Latino voters and the influence they eventually had on election results. She continues to join Bob each Monday.
For 25 years, María has helped tell untold stories and brought to light
unsung heroes in this country and around the world. She has served as a
senior correspondent for PBS’s Now, a reporter for NPR and a correspondent
for CNN. Several years ago, María launched The Futuro Media Group (producers
of Latino USA) with the mission to produce multi-platform, community-based
journalism that respects and celebrates the cultural richness of the American
experience. And in mid-January of this year, she hosted a conversation on the
reality of domestic workers at an event held in WGBH’s own Yawkey Theater.

What Am I?
this week, State of the Re-Union
visits a tiny town in the
Appalachian foothills of Ohio
where, for a century, residents
have shared the common
bond of identifying as African
American despite the fact that they look white. racial lines have been
blurred to invisibility, and people inside the same family can vehemently
disagree about whether they are black or white. As a result, everyone’s
choosing: Am i black? Am i mixed race? Or, am i white? Adding to the confusion, there’s a movement afoot to recognize their native American heritage.

St. Paddy’s Sojourn
Classical new england
Bach Month Is Back!
not a week goes by on Classical
new england when you don’t
hear a work or two by Johann
sebastian Bach, either as part
of our weekday programming,
or perhaps on The Bach Hour
or Baroque in Boston on
sundays. And that’s as it should
be: no composer, classical or
otherwise, has exerted a more
powerful impact on music and
culture than Bach. small wonder that composer max reger
called him “the beginning and
end of all music.” And from the beginning to the end of the composer’s
birthday month of march, Classical new england will be celebrating Bach’s
genius on the air, in our studios, on the road, and in the community.
The Bach Hour
every week throughout the year Classical new
england brings you The Bach Hour, the acclaimed
program that continues a 40-year Boston radio
tradition of exploring Bach’s sacred works and instrumental masterpieces. For Bach month, host Brian
McCreath’s programming includes a four-part series
(beginning February 24) featuring the rarely heard
Missae breves (short masses). On march 24, John eliot Gardiner leads his
monteverdi Choir and english Baroque soloists in the vividly descriptive
Cantata no. 182, Himmelskönig sei willkommen, written for Palm sunday.
Bringing Bach month to an exuberant conclusion on march 31, matthew
Halls (music director designate of the Oregon Bach Festival) conducts his
retrospect ensemble in a stunning performance of the joyful Easter Oratorio.

Bach Minutes
each weekday during Bach month, Classical new
england’s managing director Benjamin K. Roe takes
you inside the stories that surround the composer and
his music in The Bach Minute every weekday morning
at 7:30am and afternoon at 5:30pm. From the fascinating trajectory of Bach’s life to his music’s ongoing
influence in today’s culture, each Bach Minute vignette opens a new window
onto the composer’s art, life and creativity.

We’ll be back in Fraser on Bach’s birthday (march 21) for another
not-to-be-missed live event: a complete performance of “the most ambitious
and important keyboard piece written before Beethoven:” The Goldberg

WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station
A Big Boost for WCAI
By Mindy Todd, WCAI’s Managing Director for Editorial and Host
WGBH and WCAI have been working for years to improve the strength,
coverage and reliability of WCAI’s 90.1 signal, and this month our efforts will
bear crystal clear, far-reaching results. Thanks to the installation of a more
powerful and more reliable transmitter, WCAI’s award-winning, locally focused
programming will reach 200,000 new listeners on Cape Cod, Nantucket,
Martha’s Vineyard, the South Coast and parts of coastal Rhode Island.
The Federal Communications Commission-approved power boost is
expected to take effect by mid-March. “We are extremely proud of the local
service we offer and we’re happy it will soon be available to those who have
not been able to hear us,” says Phil Redo, managing director of WGBH. “And
those who have had to put up with spotty coverage can expect improved
reception.”
WCAI currently broadcasts at 1,200 watts and reaches approximately
275,000 listeners. The new transmitter and antennae, located on a Martha’s
Vineyard tower, are licensed to broadcast at 12,500 watts, giving WCAI the
potential to reach as many as 470,000 listeners, including every community
on Cape Cod and all of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.

WCAI also will be able to
broadcast in high definition,
and this HD capability will
let listeners enjoy the music
of WGBH’s Classical New
England for the first time,
on channel 90.1 HD2.
John Voci, WGBH’s
director of technology and
business development who
spearheaded the work that
led to the power increase, calls the stronger signal and expanded coverage
“the realization of the original dream for WCAI.”
WCAI founder Jay Allison says it’s something the station and its staff
have been looking forward to for a very long time. “What a long road to this
point,” Allison says. “We’ve been working on getting full, strong coverage of
our area since the very beginning [in 2000]. We used to send out advice on
how to adjust your radio antenna to get better reception. No more! Just turn
to 90.1 and listen.”

Sustainability
It is a term that relates to the sensible use of natural resources and to the
industries that bring an enduring sense of well being to people, and to the
communities in which they live and work. A particularly good example of
this can be found among the wool gatherers, weavers, and dyers who provide
handmade rugs for Dover Rug & Home. We support the fair trade organizations
that enable these artisans to maintain and improve their livelihoods.
Genuine craft, sustainable value... Fair trade for the people who make our rugs,
fair pricing, and a lifetime guarantee of quality – we think it’s a model that works.
RUGS, CARPETING, HARD SURFACES, WINDOWS,
AND THE PEOPLE WHO KNOW THEM.
