We have had a lot of great things
to celebrate this quarter! Just to
name a few . . . We recognized and
celebrated our associates at each
of the seven district picnics. It looks
like fun was had by all! We also
acquired seven new stores that

have grown our Kroger family. This
required a lot of hard work from all of you and we greatly appreciate it!
Thank you!
I’d also like to thank you for providing your feedback in the 2015
Associate Insights Survey. We declined 2 points from 2014, down to
a 70%, on engagement. We understand that this means that we have
work to do to improve. Our goal is to make Kroger the best place to
work and shop. The feedback that you’ve provided will allow us to
continue on that journey.
We also continue to remain focused on our communities. As I write this,
all stores are actively involved with fundraising and selling pink ribbons
for the American Cancer Society. And, in case you didn’t notice, we also
launched our Sharing Courage campaign, which coincides with the
Making Strides events.
There are many great things for us to be proud of in the Michigan
Division! Thank you for all that you do! I look forward to seeing you
in stores!

Our Expanding Kroger Family
Welcome, Team 300: A Busy June and July
Division holds new-hire event, orientation, and Town Hall meeting
How does a Kroger division prepare for opening five new stores on one day?
Very efficiently!
With the addition of these new stores came the addition of hundreds
of new Kroger associates. In order to staff the “Team 300” stores, the
Michigan Division conducted hundreds of interviews in June at the
Kroger Training Center in Westland. Once a new associate was identified,
he or she would be placed at a “Team 300” location. Placement factors
that were considered included his or her proximity to one of the new
stores, experience, and availability of positions. (Some stores filled up
faster than others.)
Then New Hire Orientation sessions were held in
early July at the Suburban Collection Showplace in
Novi. Associates picked up their schedules, nametags and Kroger uniform
shirts. They could also sign up for a Kroger Plus Card or have their current
cards updated to include the associate discount. They then attended
presentations on such important topics as Community Involvement &
Cultural Council, Total Rewards, Your Career Path, and Customer First.
Lastly, a Town Hall Meeting was held on July 17, also at the Suburban
Collection Showplace. All Team 300 store management teams,
department managers and lead clerks attended and were able to meet
with the division’s Executive team. Upon the conclusion of the business
meeting, the new store teams posed for group pictures.
Breast Cancer Awareness:
Sharing Courage
Michigan Associate Featured in “Sharing Courage” Campaign
With nearly one in eight women likely to face the disease in her lifetime, breast cancer is an issue that affects many customers and even
our own associates. This year, 20 courageous Kroger associates who are breast cancer survivors were featured in the Sharing Courage
program: on Facebook, on billboards, on in-store marketing materials related to the campaign, and on Kroger’s dedicated website,
www.sharingcourage.com.
The Michigan Division’s Lannette Hayman is one of the Sharing Courage survivors and shares her story here. Lannette joined Kroger in
April of this year as a Deli Clerk at Store 684 in Macomb Township.
Lannette’s Words of Wisdom:
Five months after a routine mammogram, I found a lump in my left breast. I watched it for a few months; then in July 2014, I had
another mammogram, an ultrasound and a biopsy. Cancer was confirmed – Stage 1 ductal carcinoma.
My older sister and I were both diagnosed with breast cancer at age 46. Our mother passed away after battling the disease for 18
months, when I was just 12. Like my sister, I chose to have a bilateral mastectomy, followed by chemotherapy, and finally reconstructive
surgery in February of this year.
Through it all, I learned how strong I really am. Yes, I had rough days, but I had a great support system to keep me going. My family and
my husband helped me to keep a positive attitude, and I am proud that I kicked cancer’s butt!
Now I feel great. I enjoy every day like it’s my last, tell people I love them, and am nice to everyone, because you never know what
someone else might be going through.
For other women dealing with breast cancer: when you can’t find the strength to get out of bed, remember how much you are loved.
Brighter days are on the horizon. Enjoy life, and don’t take anything for granted. Stay positive, keep the faith, and believe in the hope
for a cure.
Then five days later, it was time for the grand openings!
Knowing the toll this illness takes on the
lives of our associates and customers,
Kroger is continuing its commitment to
finding a cure for this deadly disease
and helping women and their families
find the treatment and resources they
need to face their illness head on.
With the help of key vendor partners
who share our commitment to eradicating this cancer – and providing support
to those who face it – the Kroger family
of stores once again will be Sharing
Courage by investing $3 million for
breast cancer awareness, treatment and
research.

Hommerding Named 2014 Community
Service Award Recipient
Congratulations to Monica Hommerding on receiving the
2014 Community Service Award! Nominated by Store 680
Pharmacy Manager Shawn Freese, the Pharmacy Technician at Jackson Store 680 in District M has served Kroger
customers for 30 years as of June. Monica also serves her
community as an active volunteer for the American Cancer
Society (ACS) for 19 years, since she lost her father to lung
cancer. Her passion is to finish the fight against cancer.
Monica’s “signature project” is the Relay for Life (RFL) of Jackson
County, which last year was the top fundraising ACS event in
Michigan, the #28 RFL in the United States out of 5,074, and the
#2 event per capita for fundraising in communities with a population of 150,000 to 200,000.
Over the years, Monica has served as an RFL participant, team
captain, and planning committee member. In fact, in 2014
alone she served as a team captain, event co-chairperson/
growth, mission delivery chair, and food chair. She led
monthly team-captain meetings and wrote a monthly newsletter with information for participants. She was also a page
administrator for the RFL-Jackson Facebook page.
Her fight against cancer is a very public one, as she has takes
it to the streets, literally. Monica and her dog, Luke, participated in the Bark for Life of Jackson County fundraising
event; Luke was the only dog to be dyed purple, the event’s
signature color. As part of her Mission Delivery message, Monica organized a Cardboard Car Parade at RFL-Jackson, to
bring awareness to the shortage of volunteer drivers needed to transport cancer patients to treatment.
She has made appearances representing RFL-Jackson on local television stations, in newspapers, at various expos, and
at ACS and community events. Last year she was also chosen to represent RFL of Jackson County, Michigan, at the RFL Top
Performers Summit in Dallas, Texas, which honors the top 50 relays nationwide.
As the 2014 Community Service Award winner, Monica received:
• A $500 check donated to the charity of her choice (ACS Relay for Life of Jackson County);
• A certificate in honor of her service from Rodney McMullen, Chairman and CEO for The Kroger Co.; and
• Her name was listed in the annual report and used in company-wide communications.
Although there is only one person recognized with the Community Service Award per division each year, we consider all of
our Michigan Division nominees to be “winners” – thank you for all you do to serve the communities in which you live and
work. Once again, congratulations to Monica Hommerding, the Michigan Division’s 2014 Community Service Award winner!
Monica Hommerding was honored as the 2014 Community Service Award recipient during
an awards luncheon on August 19. She also received a check for the charity of her choice and
presented it to Jenny Beamer of the American Cancer Society as Store Manager Jeremy
Villegas (left) and District M Manager Dave Karol (right) look on.

Progressive grocer’s ANNUAL AwardS
Bird Honored as a “Rising Star” Among Top Women in Grocery
Karen Bird was honored recently as a recipient of the
2015 Progressive Grocer Top Women in Grocery Award.
Karen has worked for The Kroger Co. for 22 years, serving
as the Meat Merchandiser for the past 3 years. Since her
promotion to the role of Meat/Seafood Merchandiser, the
department has seen positive I.D. Sales growth all three
years and Seafood sales broke the $1,000,000 a week average in 2014 for the first time. Additionally, Karen serves
on the Western Michigan Food Marketing Board where
she helps to recruit future store leaders.
Karen is one of 34 Kroger associates receiving the award
this year. She joins an exclusive club of past Michigan
honorees, including Jayne Homco, Chris Albi, Rachel Ross and Lanell Ohlinger.
Now in its ninth year, each June the Progressive Grocer Top Women in Grocery Award recognizes “female
movers and shakers within the retail food industry who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and
influence in their companies, as well as the industry at large.” Congratulations to Karen on receiving this
prestigious award!
Also honored during the awards luncheon on August 19, Karen Bird is congratulated by (L to R) Jayne Homco, (Karen’s husband) Kevin, and Tim
Nelson. Karen received a framed portrait of the 34 Kroger associates who received the Top Women in Grocery Award this year, including herself.

Attendees See Detroit During 2015
Store Management Outing
Over 400 participants attended the 2015 Management Outing held on June 3 at the Detroit Marriott at
the Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit. Attendees included Co-Managers, Associate Managers,
and members of administrative management. A three-hour business meeting focused on reviewing the
previous quarter’s results, future merchandising objectives, Co-Manager role clarity, and everyone’s role
in providing our customers with a G.I.F.T. (Greet, In-Stock, Fresh, and Time).
Immediately following lunch, all attendees took part in a teambuilding event which led them through
downtown Detroit on a scavenger hunt, concluding at the Joe Louis Arena. The “Navigating Leadership
Challenge” provided them with an opportunity to see many great sights in the city of Detroit. Afterwards,
much of the group loaded onto buses and traveled to Comerica Park for the Detroit Tigers game, which
was optional.

Recent
Retirements
Thank You for All Your Hard Work
and Dedication!
Gary Arnold
Sally Achtabowski has retired from Store 635 in Essexville after
working in the retail food industry for more than 40 years. An
8-year Kroger associate, Sally most recently served as a Grocery
Clerk.
Piper Anderson recently retired from Store 443 in Dearborn. A
23-year associate, Piper was a Front End Clerk.
After 47 years of service, Gary Arnold has retired from Store 708
in Brownstown, where he most recently served as the Receiver
on the night crew. The store team celebrated Gary’s departure on
June 13 with a retirement farewell party in the conference room.
BRUCE BISHOP
JUDITH CUFFARO
Harrison Township Store 622 recently bid farewell to two longtime associates who retired: 45-year associate Regina Baecke,
DSD/Receiver, and 47-year associate Sue Fitzpatrick, SCO Lead
Attendant. Regina held many positions within the company, her
favorite being CSM. She also served as the Cultural Council Lead
as well as on the S.T.A.R. Safety Squad. She touched many hearts
within the company. Sue was the glow of the Front End and
helped many customers (and a few fellow associates) learn how
to check out quickly and easily through the Self Checkouts. The
store team celebrated the retirees with a lovely catered luncheon
that the whole store enjoyed.
On June 30, Bruce Bishop retired from Store 888 in Lansing, where
he served as a Staff Pharmacist. The 5-year associate’s wife will also
retire this year and they plan to travel, work on their home, and
also fix up their family farm in Imlay City.
Beverly Campbell has retired from Store 669 in Redford. The
former Cashier and Self-Checkout Attendant had served Kroger
customers for 17 years.
Dennis Clay has retired from Store 884 in Lansing, where he served
as the Night Grocery Manager for the last 22 years. A 44-year
associate, Dennis now plans to spend more time with his family
and more time fishing, hunting and riding (and customizing)
motorcycles.
SARAH DRAKE
Judith Cuffaro has retired from Store 486 in Warren. The 25-year
associate most recently served as a Front End Clerk.
On May 31, Sarah Drake retired from Store 450 in Algonac after 8
years with Kroger and 16 years in the grocery industry. The store
team celebrated the former Cashier with a luncheon on her last
day. Sarah now plans to spend more time gardening, painting,
enjoying family and friends, and playing bingo with “the girls”!
Pat Fisher, Pharmacy Manager at 450 in Algonac, retired on
May 22. Pharmacy Coordinator Susan Findley, Pharmacy Sales
Manager Abdi Osman, and many pharmacy and store associates
celebrated with Pat during a luncheon on his last day. He joined
Kroger 7 years ago but had 34 years in retail pharmacy. Pat plans
to spend more time with family and friends as well as boating
and fishing.
JIM FULKERSON
Jim Fulkerson has retired from Store 615 in Livonia after 24 years.
The store team held a retirement party for the former Frozen
Foods Lead Clerk.
On June 26 Richard Hample (pictured left) retired from Store
448 in Troy after 49 years of service. The former Grocery Manager
plans to spend more time with his family and enjoying his
grandchildren. Andy Shaya (pictured right), Produce Clerk, also
retired on June 26, after 29 years of service to Kroger customers.
He said that he plans on just enjoying life now that he has retired.
On July 19, Thomas Lazar Sr. retired after a combined 55 years of
service in the grocery industry. Tom worked at Kroger from 19601982 and held the positions of Dairy Clerk, Produce Manager, CoManager and Store Manager. This was a time before hand jacks
and pallets! Tom then worked for Kessel from 1982-2000 and held
the positions of Store Manager, District Manager and Category
Manager. After Kroger acquired the Kessel stores in 2000, Tom

Summer Interns Learn About Kroger
A group of 12 interns from different universities worked together for ten weeks this summer, learning about Kroger’s Michigan Division and its operations.
The interns were broken into three department teams: Meat/Seafood, Grocery, and Produce. Their primary focus was “engagement.” They also spent
four weeks in stores and the other six in the Office, doing competition checks and going on field trips. The group worked very hard throughout the
summer and gave an outstanding presentation to our Merchandising and Executive teams on their last day. Each intern was then awarded a $1,500
scholarship check to use towards his or her remaining semesters of college.

Kroger Scholars is a company-wide program of The Kroger Co. Foundation and is open to
children of associates in the Kroger family of stores who have two years of service and work at
least 1,000 hours per year.
Funds can be used at any accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational program.
Scholarship America, a leading national scholarship manager, selected recipients based on a broad
range of criteria including scholastic performance, work experience, extra-curricular and volunteer
activities and a statement of goals and aspirations. Financial need was not a consideration. No one
from the Kroger family of stores participated in the selection process.
Since launching in 2008, Kroger Scholars has provided more than 2,200 awards. Since the
program began, 90 children of Michigan Division associates have received scholarships.
Watch for information on the 2016 program early next year.

“My MD1 Experience” : Anisa Bezhani
We asked recent MD1 graduate Anisa Bezhani about her career path as well as about her
MD1 training experience:
In 2007, I was hired as a Courtesy Clerk and eventually became a Cashier and a Customer Service Representative.
These roles taught me how to achieve results through teamwork, how to communicate effectively, and most
importantly, how to put our customers first. I was an active member of the Safety Team and the Cultural
Council and in 2010, I took over as a Cultural Council lead.
Since the day I was hired I knew I wanted to do more with The Kroger Co. because there is so much potential
for growth. The possibilities are endless! I dedicated myself to learning more and striving to be the best.
I started at Wayne State University in the fall of 2010. I worked at Kroger an average of 32 hours a week
while maintaining full-time status as a student. I graduated in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in Business
Administration.
I began my MD1 training earlier this year at New Baltimore Store 724. Store Manager John Gargaro and his team have given me the tools to
become an effective Co-Manager. Their leadership, continuous guidance and support have been integral to my success in this program. This
training experience has given me the opportunity to grow and develop in every department. I have learned so much. I am passionate about
Kroger, passionate about its people, and passionate about the results we are striving to achieve. I truly believe in Kroger and what it has to
offer.

Mares Earns Cheese Professional Certification
James (Jimme) Mares is now listed among the 2015 class of American Cheese Society
Certified Cheese Professionals®! Mares is one of only five Certified Cheese Professionals
in Michigan and the first Michigan Kroger associate to become certified.
Mares is part of an elite group of 187 individuals from 51 different companies who passed the 4th annual ACS
Certified Cheese Professional® Exam. The exam, held July 29 in Providence, Rhode Island, is the first and only one of
its kind. The American Cheese Society established the exam to encourage high standards of comprehensive cheese
knowledge and service for professionals within all areas of the industry. The exam is based on the knowledge and
skills required to successfully perform cheese-related tasks. Testing encompasses a broad range of topics including
raw ingredients, the cheese-making process, storing and handling cheese, selecting distributors, marketing and
communication, nutrition, and regulations and sanitation.
ACS Certified Cheese Professionals are required to demonstrate continued active participation and professional
development within the industry to maintain their credentials and must recertify every three years. There
are currently 593 such individuals
throughout the United States and
Canada.
About his certification, Mares said,
“I love sharing my knowledge with
our customers and cheese mongers
on all aspects of specialty cheese
from farm to table. It is important
to promote our local farmers and
artisan cheese makers throughout
the United States. I am blessed to
work for a company that shares my
vision for fresh, local and
sustainable foods.”
